Going on the recent form guide, Chelsea are red hot favourites to beat Schalke in their opening Champions League game on the 2014-15 campaign. Schalke arrive to Stamford Bridge having had their worst start to a Bundesliga season ever. Last weekend the Royal Blues were comprehensively beaten 4-1 away at Borussia Mönchengladbach, marking their worst start to a season for 46 years. Still without a win this season in any competition, Jens Keller’s charges already have a mountain to climb with just one point on the board after three league games. For the Germans, it feels like the trip to Chelsea has come at exactly the wrong time, with star players Julian Draxler, Max Meyer and Klaas-Jan Huntelaar all not 100% fit, while Jefferson Farfan, Atsuto Uchida, Sead Kolasinac and Joel Matip are all out injured. As for Chelsea, it feels like everything is coming up smelling like roses for Jose Mourinho’s men. With four wins in four matches at the start of the Premier League season, the Blues have cemented their reputation as the favourites for the domestic title, and with a team bustling with confidence they now begin their assault on the Champions League. Diego Costa (seven goals in four games) is on fire, Cesc Fabregas is creating a goal every game for the Pensioners, while Nemanja Matic is rock solid in the defensive midfield role. Thinking about potential changes for Mourinho’s men, John Terry, having played during last weekend’s home win over Swansea, may get the night off against the Germans. Overall, Chelsea will be many people’s favourites to get the three points on Wednesday night, however many Blues fans will remember that 12 months ago their side were similarly billed to beat Basel in the corresponding fixture. That night ended up with the Swiss side winning 2-0. Chelsea are unlikely to make the same mistake again this time around. MY PREDICTION: Chelsea 5–0 Schalke Essential facts and stats to help with online betting Chelsea FC begin their quest for a second Champions League crown against Schalke, who they beat 3-0 home and away in last season’s group stage. Chelsea’s overall record against Bundesliga opponents is W9 D4 L4. Chelsea’s defeat by Basel a year ago was their first on matchday one after eight wins and three draws. It was also José Mourinho’s first reverse on opening night. Chelsea have lost just one of their last 30 home league games. |
When the fixture list was released in June, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho is unlikely to have foreseen this game being a top of the table clash. Granted the season is only three games old, but Swansea travel to Stamford Bridge in second place and with a perfect record so far. Among their scalps are Louis Van Gaal’s Manchester United, and a task of similar difficulty will await them at Stamford Bridge. Chelsea’s recent Spanish recruits are on fire, with Diego Costa leading the Premier League’s scoring charts and Cecs Fabregas joint top assister. Following their impressive six goal haul at Everton last time out, the London side will be looking to add to the eleven goal they have scored already this season. Swansea have not been goal shy either, and Chelsea will have to keep midfielder Gylfi Sigurdsson quiet if they want to increase their chances of a clean sheet. The Icelandic international is level with Fabregas on four assists, creating two thirds of Swansea’s goals so far. A win for either team will see them at the summit of the Premier League come the end of the weekend. STATS… Chelsea have kept a clean sheet in each of their last four games against Swansea. Swansea have not beaten Chelsea in the league since both sides were in the old Division 2 in 1981 Diego Costa is the Premier League’s leading scorer with four goals in three games. Cesc Fabregas and Gylfi Sigurdsson meanwhile are joint top of the assists chart, each with four. |
