Hey fellow farmers, I just took a step closer to my new animal farm. I will start with a snail farm then I'll add other livestock to the farm as we grow.

Without further ado, let's get started. ). I've built my Pen (snail house), and today I've put sand in the pen. I will be getting my brood stock before next week runs out, maybe Wednesday. Anyway see the pictures below how my pen looks like.

This thread was created to showcase my snail farm as away of encouraging the unemployed youths to explore the golden opportunities that lies within, in other to attain financial freedom without having to remain idle "while waiting on their choice employment". And also, to motivate and unveil to the working class the flexibility in snail farming. Thereby making it a very good way of doubling their sources of income. As it often requires most attention in the evenings/night, minimum startup capital, very low morality rate, good return of investment, etc.

Agriculture remains the only way out, most especially in this present economic reality in Nigeria. This is why, going into the agricultural sector will not only make us self-sufficient but to increase income base.

Snail farming is an art of rearing snails for commercial and subsistence purposes. The process of rearing snail is called
helicicuiture (meaning snail culture). Due to its high nutritional value, snails have become a very popular delicacy. Snail meat is very rich in calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, selenium, vitamin E, vitamin C, protein, iron, fat (0.05 to 0.08%), etc. Because of this nutritional values, the meat stands as a very good alternative to red meat, this is even why the consumption of snail meat is gaining preference.

Snails are crawling creatures which are always found in the bushes, wet land areas, River banks and forests of the world, especially in the tropics. There are many types of snails which can be identified by the environment in which they are found: Land snail, fresh water snails and marine (salt water) snails. But for the purpose of this thread, we will be concentrating on the Land snails which is commonly known as Giant Africa Large Snail.

I used to give Diamond, but it's now too expensive. I changed to Binggo to save cost, but I'm still doubting its quality in terms of value for money. Worse still, my GSD just littered nine, and I'm worried about cost of feeding as they start growing.

Please can anyone share with me local recipe and step by step instruction on how to make NUTRITIOUS but CHEAP food to help my puppies grow well?

INGREDIENTS

▪️2 Parts Corn
▪️1 Part Soya Beans
▪️1 Part Groundnuts
▪️Fish (could be crayfish, fish waste, etc and as much as you can afford. You can do 1 part fish of your choice, don't just go overboard as too much protein isn't good).

Roast the soya beans and groundnuts to remove the shaft. Then grind all together until very smooth.
NB; grind the corn first before adding the other ingredients, as corn is the hardest of them.

PROCEDURE FOR COOKING
Into a pot of water on fire, pour some of the formula and stir (e.g 2 tin cups of milk into 1&1/2 glass cup of water). Keep stiring until you get a consistency like pap (Ogi). It takes a little while to get this consistency, so be patient. If it's too thick, you can add some water. For the wee pups, it's shouldn't be thick. For older dogs, you can serve thick. Add a little salt or seasoning when it's ready. You can also add palm oil if you so desire. Serve cool.

NB; Your dogs won't readily eat it, as its new to them so start small when cooking.

Here's a tip from a fellow nairalander @LordRegalia, if you're having trouble getting your dogs to eat something new, mix it with something they really like. In my case I mixed it with pedigree (rice & chicken). The trick is to have more quantity of what your dog likes with little of what you're introducing. Begin to reduce what it likes while adding more of the staple food - in this case the formula, until it's just the staple food they're consuming.
