Let us stop the social-media noise for a moment and look at Nigerian politics from the perspective of actual electoral mathematics, political structures and what is happening on the ground.

As of today, I believe Bola Ahmed Tinubu is still the man most likely to win the 2027 presidential election.

And before somebody starts shouting "Obidient", "Atikulator" or "APC apologist", please read the argument first.

I am not saying Tinubu is perfect.

I am not saying Nigerians are not suffering.

I am not saying the opposition cannot defeat him.

I am saying that if the election were held under today's political circumstances, Tinubu has the advantage.

Here is why.

1. APC currently has the strongest political structure

Presidential elections in Nigeria are not won on Twitter, Facebook, Nairaland or WhatsApp.

They are won through states, local governments, wards, polling units, party agents, mobilisation and turnout.

And on this front, APC is currently extremely strong.

Recent reporting indicates that Tinubu has consolidated enormous political control, with APC-aligned governors and political structures spread across most of the country. AP reports that Tinubu now has the backing of 31 of Nigeria's 36 state governors through political realignments and defections.

You may dislike this reality, but you cannot wish it away.

2. The opposition has the votes — but can it unite them?

This is the biggest question of 2027.

In 2023:

Tinubu — about 8.8 million

Atiku — about 7.0 million

Peter Obi — about 6.1 million

Kwankwaso — about 1.5 million

The opposition will immediately tell you:

"Look at the numbers! Atiku + Obi + Kwankwaso is far greater than Tinubu!"

Correct.

But there is one problem.

Those votes belonged to different candidates, different parties and different political constituencies.

They cannot simply be added together as though every Atiku voter would automatically vote Obi, or every Obi voter would automatically vote Atiku.

That is not how elections work.

And that is precisely why the opposition's current attempt to form a united front is so important.

In fact, as of August 28, 2026, a group known as G100 is still working toward a single opposition candidate, with Atiku, Obi and other opposition figures involved in the broader discussions.

If they succeed, Tinubu's job becomes much harder.

If they fail, Tinubu's advantage increases significantly.

3. Tinubu has something his opponents cannot easily manufacture — incumbency

Whether you like it or not, the incumbent president has enormous advantages.

He has:

• Nationwide visibility
• Federal government structures
• Established party machinery
• Access to sitting governors and political leaders
• An existing campaign organisation
• Four years of presidential visibility
• A record to campaign on — good or bad

The APC is not starting from zero.

The opposition is trying to build a coalition capable of defeating an already-established political machine.

That is a completely different challenge.

4. Tinubu does not need to win Peter Obi's South-East

This is another point people sometimes miss.

Tinubu does not need to win every region.

Peter Obi can dominate the South-East and still lose the presidency.

Atiku can dominate parts of the North and still lose.

Tinubu's objective is to construct a coalition that gives him the highest national vote total while satisfying the constitutional spread requirement.

That is why the presidential election is ultimately about state-by-state mathematics, not who trends most on social media.

5. The North is not permanently owned by anybody

This is particularly important.

Nobody should assume:

"North = Atiku."

Or:

"South-East = Obi."

Or:

"South-West = Tinubu."

Nigeria's politics is much more complicated than that.

Voters can change their minds.

Political alliances change.

Governors influence elections.

Candidates change parties.

Religious and ethnic considerations matter, but they are not the only variables.

Economic performance, candidate selection, local political structures, turnout and campaign organisation can all change the result.

6. But let me give Tinubu's opponents their strongest argument

The economy.

This is where APC cannot afford complacency.

Inflation, food prices, unemployment, insecurity and the general cost of living remain major political vulnerabilities.

Even reports sympathetic to the administration acknowledge the enormous economic pain Nigerians have experienced from the reforms. AP describes Tinubu as facing serious economic and security crises and widespread public discontent.

Therefore, if the opposition succeeds in convincing Nigerians that:

"Your life became worse under Tinubu and we have a better alternative,"

then APC has a serious problem.

And I will not pretend otherwise.

7. The opposition's biggest weapon is also its biggest problem

Their weapon is anti-Tinubu sentiment.

Their problem is who should replace him?

Atiku says he can do it.

Obi's supporters say Obi is the answer.

Kwankwaso still has a substantial political base.

Other opposition politicians also want influence.

The question is:

Can all these political interests genuinely subordinate themselves to ONE candidate?

That is the million-dollar question.

Because if Atiku and Obi supporters spend the next few months fighting each other while Tinubu's structure consolidates, APC will be laughing.

And the latest attempts at opposition coordination show that they themselves understand this problem.

MY VERDICT

If I had to make a prediction today — August 28, 2026 — I would rank the race like this:

1️⃣ Tinubu — Favourite

2️⃣ Atiku — Most serious challenger

3️⃣ Obi — Major national factor


But I am not saying the election is already won.

Far from it.

I am saying:

Tinubu currently has the political structure.

The opposition currently has the potential numbers.

The entire 2027 election may therefore come down to one question:

CAN THE OPPOSITION CONVERT ITS COMBINED POPULARITY INTO ONE UNITED ELECTORAL MACHINE?

If YES — Tinubu can be defeated.

If NO — Tinubu has a very strong chance of winning a second term.

And that is why I will not be carried away by Twitter polls, Facebook polls, YouTube polls or Nairaland polls.

Nigeria's election will not be won on social media.

It will be won at the polling unit.

The presidential election is currently scheduled by INEC for January 16, 2027.

So, let the campaigns begin.

May the best candidate win — and may Nigerians vote based on competence, character, performance and the future they want for Nigeria.

My prediction today?

TINUBU — 2027.

Not because defeat is impossible.

Because, at this moment, he has the clearest electoral path to victory.
