Politics / Want To Run For President Of Nigeria? Only $132,000- AFP by tyson55(m): 7:46am On Nov 10, 2014
AFP
Joel Olatunde.

Lagos (AFP) - Nigeria's main political parties are charging eye-watering fees from election hopefuls, in a move condemned as undemocratic and a breeding ground for high-level cronyism and corruption.

Supporters of President Goodluck Jonathan pooled their resources to stump up the 22 million naira (132,000 dollars) to buy his nomination form from the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The main opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) is asking for 27.5 million naira, forcing one prospective candidate, former military ruler Muhammadu Buhari, to take out a bank loan.

For governorship posts, the PDP is asking for 11 million naira while the APC wants 10 million naira -- all before anyone is even chosen to run at the elections next year.

Candidates for parliamentary elections are also having to pay huge sums of cash, far outstripping the fees charged elsewhere in West Africa.

Political and legal analysts say the exorbitant rates in Nigeria are illegal, discourage popular participation in the electoral process and consolidate power among the wealthy elite.

"The incredible amount of money charged by political parties for nomination forms only reflects the dangerous connection between politics and big business and the disconnect it fosters on the silent majority," said Eneruvie Enakoko, formerly of the Transition Monitoring Group of non-profit organisations promoting democratic values.

High fees for nomination force aspiring candidates without huge financial means to raise money from super-rich backers, who will then expect pay-back if they are voted in, he added.

"If the candidate eventually gets the nomination and wins the election, he feels indebted and obligated to that tiny percentage of the population and his loyalty will be to those people and not to the rest of the populace or the silent majority who have no voice," he told AFP.

"It is a dangerous and vicious cycle because the candidate after getting elected cannot afford to forget where he got the money to bankroll his election."

- 'Moneybags and godfathers' -

Under the military dictator Ibrahim Babangida (1985-1993), two political parties were founded and funded by government, the National Republican Convention and Social Democratic Party.

But since Nigeria returned to civilian rule in 1999, the government has stopped direct funding of political parties, forcing them to look for other ways to raise money.

While the nexus of politicians, wealthy individuals and big business is not unique to Nigeria, the phenomenon makes it less likely that the country's catalogue of problems are tackled.

Nigeria may be Africa's biggest economy and leading oil producer but it ranks low on the global scale for social development indicators such as access to education and healthcare.

Some 61.2 percent of Nigerians were living on $1 a day or less in 2009-10, according to the last available government figures on living standards, released in 2012.

Nigeria is also blighted by endemic graft, particularly in the huge public sector, and was ranked 144th out of 177 countries in Transparency International's Corruption Perceptions Index 2013.

For Dapo Thomas, of Lagos State University, the exorbitant fees skew the political system, furthering a culture of patronage and keeping out poorer, but perhaps more qualified, administrators.

"It allows the moneybags and godfathers to dominate the political scene," he said.

"If somebody of Buhari's calibre could not afford 27.5 million naira without taking a loan from the bank, who else can afford it?"

- 'Unwholesome and undemocratic' -

Lagos lawyer Femi Falana said charging for nomination by both Nigeria's Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which oversees elections, and political parties was against the law.

Debo Adeniran, of the Coalition Against Corrupt Leaders pressure group, described charging as "unwholesome" and "undemocratic" but INEC maintained that it was powerless to act.

The electoral body cannot stop parties from collecting election fees, said INEC spokesman Kayode Idowu, but expressed concern about the trend.

"On no account should eligible Nigerians be denied the rights to participate in the electoral process. Not even money," he said.

The electoral body will continue to monitor the finances of the parties while it had also set limits on campaign spending, he added.

A presidential candidate cannot spend above one billion naira, a governorship hopeful 200 million naira, a politician running for the senate 40 million and 10 million for the lower House of Representatives.

Parties are also not allowed to seek external funding to safeguard "the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation", said Idowu.

"All these measures are in place to ensure popular participation as well as preserve the integrity of the electoral system," he added.

Clearly all the moves done by BRIC's so far are to directly compete with the jewish banking system and the US dollar and from the looks of it, they just might win. When the US have to ask others not to join another banking system, you can just how nervous the US truly is and rightfully so.

By getting rid of the dollar as an international currency and most importantly the petro dollar, trillions of worthless paper money will come down crashing on the US and EU countries such as England, France and Germany. Many billionaires agree that the US dollar will get hit badly soon (by 2015) and the US economy will fall hence if you have money, don't invest in the dollar.

Russia and China are buying a lot of gold to get rid of the dollar but somehow, gold prices are being manipulated to remain low. According to specialist around the globe, gold should be at least $2000.00 per ounce right now and keep on moving up and the demand is increasing even from some NATO nations who are getting nervous.

Kitco put out a good piece on the subject called "Gold Friendly BRICS Challenge the Dollar and the Fed".

Many countries are tired of the US games. The only way to defeat the US without shedding a drop of blood is by removing the greenback as the international currency and the Petro dollar. If they managed to accomplish what they clearly want, the US will become irrelevant in no time.

This is quite an interesting era as we just might see either WW3 which would take the US and many other countries out or just the fall of an empire just by affecting it's dollar. Either way, the future is not looking good for the US.

I hope the prosecution appeals this case even if the judge hands out the maximum 15 year sentence. I just can't fathom a guy waking up and not noticing his girlfriend isn't in bed next to him, grabbing his weapon and running to a locked bathroom door and firing because he thinks it's an intruder. Why would an intruder or burglar lock themselves in a bathroom of all places with nowhere to escape? Did they have to go number 1 or 2 and couldn't hold it? Justice was not served.
Sports / Re: Oscar Pistorius Found Not Guilty Of Murder by tyson55(m): 1:45pm On Sep 11, 2014
The view I formed from watching the trial was that Pistorius is guilty of murder but the judge has to go on the evidence and what she is has said is that the prosecution failed to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt. Yes, Pistorius shot at the bathroom door, knowing he would kill someone but in the absence of proof (other than his own evidence) how can she conclude that he knew Reeva Steenkamp was behind the door?

Politics / Nigeria Says 'no Evidence' US Air Marshal Attacked In Lagos by tyson55(m): 10:00pm On Sep 10, 2014
Lagos (AFP) - Nigeria's aviation authorities on Wednesday said there was no evidence for the US claim that one of its air marshals was attacked as he tried to board a flight in Lagos.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said on Monday that the marshal, who was on duty, was attacked with a syringue on Sunday and was undergoing treatment in Houston, Texas.

A spokesman for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), Yakubu Dati, said in a statement that officials were aware of the reports and had been in contact with US diplomats.

A security team from the US mission in Nigeria had reviewed security camera footage from the Lagos airport of the air marshal, he said.

But he added: "Preliminary observation from the CCTV (closed-circuit television) footage did not show evidence of such (an) occurrence."

A US embassy spokesman in Nigeria declined to comment when asked by AFP about the footage, and referred to an earlier statement by US State Department deputy spokeswoman Marie Harf.

Harf told reporters in Washington on Monday: "We can confirm reports that an unknown assailant injected a substance into the arm of a US federal air marshal at the airport in Lagos, Nigeria."

US law enforcement agencies were collaborating with their Nigerian counterparts to investigate the incident, she added. The FBI said the marshal was not in danger.

The incident raised fears the syringe could have carried some form of the Ebola virus because Nigeria is one of the West African countries where the deadly epidemic has spread.

Eight people have been killed and dozens infected with the fever in the current outbreak, which has killed nearly 2,300 in three other West African states.

Religion / Satanists To Hold Controversial Black Mass by tyson55(m): 9:26pm On Sep 10, 2014
A devil-worshiping group hell-bent on hosting a satanic black mass is planning to go ahead with its controversial ceremony this month, despite fervent protests by residents of Oklahoma City and a lawsuit from the Catholic Church.

The co-founder of Dakhma of Angra Mainyu told ABC News that the religious and educational organization decided to hold the black mass in public but it will be a “tamer” version than some traditional satanic ceremonies by, for example, substituting vinegar for acts involving urine to comply with state health laws.

The upcoming event has generated controversy because black masses mock Christianity and the rituals that make up their services but organizers see it as an integral part of their religion.

"One of the dictates of the church is not only to educate the members but to educate the public,” Dakhma of Angra Mainyu’s Adam Daniels said, “and to debunk the Hollywood-projected image of our beliefs.”

Daniels said all 88 tickets to the Sept. 21 event – held at the theater in the city’s civic center - have been sold. The parks and recreation department, which rented the space to the group for $420, cited First Amendment protections in allowing the group to meet in a public facility.

Satanists Use Hobby Lobby Decision to Play Devil's Advocate

"Mr. Daniels must abide by our local ordinances, our fire codes and all of our state laws," Parks and Recreation spokeswoman Jennifer Lindsey-McClintock told ABC News. "No bloodletting of any kind will be allowed.”

A $17.50 ticket buys participants a front-row seat to the festivities, which include a performance from the band “God in a Machine” and readings that call for the renunciation of God. Male participants and audience members are encouraged to wear black, hooded, full-length robes, but evening wear is also appropriate for spectators.

Anthony Briggman, an assistant professor of theology at Emory University in Atlanta, explained that the general motivating principles behind satanic groups – including Dakhma of Angra Mainyu – is to “parody” Roman Catholic liturgy by “demonstrating their opposition to orthodox Christian beliefs and practices.”

“The line between parody and mockery is a fuzzy one and it is unclear to me on which side of the line they usually fall,” he said of satanic groups in general.

“The goal seems to be to acquire some of the spiritual power [and] magic that they associate with the Roman Catholic ritual of transubstantiation, the transformation of the Eucharistic bread and wine into the body and blood of Christ,” Briggman said.

Co-founder Daniels said the Sept. 21 ceremony will take place before an altar-like table where a woman in lingerie lies (another concession to reflect the state's nudity laws).

The culmination of the event comes when the Dakhma of Angra Mainyu deacons and priest stomp on the, in this case, unconsecrated host and spit on it. Daniels said organizers will wear profane costumes, use explicit language and desecrate the fake host, which Catholics believe is a form of the resurrected Christ.

Professor Briggman said that in other instances, he has “heard the reports of ritualistic practices of sex, bloodletting, and sacrifice ... but it is unclear to me how much these reports are hyperbole designed to capture the attention of the press and public.”

Daniels said the Oklahoma City ceremony will wrap up with a Satanic exorcism intended to draw the Holy Spirit from the follower's body, which contrasts with traditional exorcisms that are designed to expel the devil from the individual.

"Our practices have gotten it to about 22 to 25 minutes," Daniels said of the ritual.

Additional controversy has surrounded this particular event because the Oklahoma City Archdiocese filed a lawsuit against Daniels' group after media reports that he was in possession of a consecrated host, a wafer that some Catholics believe is literally the body of Christ.

The host in question has since been handed over to the archdiocese and the legal action has been stopped, but that has not put all of the Archbishop’s concerns to rest.

"I remain concerned about the dark powers that this satanic worship invites into our community and the spiritual danger that this poses to all who are involved in it, directly or indirectly," Archbishop Paul Coakley said in a statement.

The group is separate from The Satanic Temple, a national group with similar beliefs that has long fought with Oklahoma City officials about the right to have a statue of the devil placed prominently in the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Lucien Greaves, the leader of The Satanic Temple, told ABC News that Dakhma of Angra Mainyu may be timing its black mass in order to coincide with the publicity drummed up by The Satanic Temple’s legal battle for the devil statue.

“I have a feeling that they're rather inspired by the attention that our activity has gotten,” Greaves told ABC News, “but I don’t think there’s a particularly higher concentration in Oklahoma than anywhere else.”

Two American patients stricken with Ebola are to be flown from Africa to the U.S., ABC News has learned.

The patients will be transported one by one, sources said.

Meanwhile, there are plans to transfer a patient with Ebola virus infection to Emory University Hospital's special facility containment unit within the next several days, hospital officials said in a statement. Officials added that it's unclear when the patient will arrive in Atlanta.

"Emory University Hospital has a specially built isolation unit set up in collaboration with the CDC to treat patients who are exposed to certain serious infectious diseases," hospital officials said. "It is physically separate from other patient areas and has unique equipment and infrastructure that provide an extraordinarily high level of clinical isolation. It is one of only four such facilities in the country."

"Emory University Hospital physicians, nurses and staff are highly trained in the specific and unique protocols and procedures necessary to treat and care for this type of patient. For this specially trained staff, these procedures are practiced on a regular basis throughout the year so we are fully prepared for this type of situation."
