JustTara:
WHEN Enugu State nursed the idea of building its
Government House (Lion Building), part of the plan
was to have a canteen. Located directly opposite
the Deputy Governor's office (currently being
refurbished), the canteen, which opens Monday to
Friday, provides food and drinks to staff and
visitors at pocket-friendly prices.
Sadly, however, the facility, like many things
government, is dying slowly; it has become a
symbol of neglect and lack of a maintenance
culture. The building, originally white, has become
a 'coat of many colours', as a result of decay. And
while other Government House structures have
undergone renovation (the old Lion Building was
pulled down and rebuilt last year), the canteen
waits to fall apart.
A visit to the canteen leaves one wondering
whether the state government really cares about
the health and welfare of the staff that patronize the
place. Run by a private hand, it is an eyesore, to
say the least. The roof leaks. The chairs, tables
and windows are broken. Simply, the place yearns
for urgent facelift. The facility, which has a section
for senior Government House staff, has broken
floors with plants growing on the wall. The louvres
have turned brown, and only two of the four ceiling
fans in the general hall work.
The Guardian gathered that no maintenance work
has been carried out on the building in the past
nine years. Under former Governor Chimaroke
Nnamani's administration, it was one of the first
points of call for staff and visitors to Government
House. But things went sour for the place when
the last administration turned its back on it,
apparently due to various food vendors contracted
to make supplies during activities at the Lion
Building.
According to a source, certain highly placed
officials in government were comfortable
patronizing caterers outside Government House,
and felt little concern about the staff and their
welfare. The implication was that several staff no
longer use the canteen, despite the low prices of
food served there.
A staff, who confided in The Guardian, said: "The
place is part of the deceit going on in the
government of Enugu State. One thing that might
interest you is why nobody talks about the
situation of the canteen. You can imagine the
condition of the place where human beings have to
eat. The problem is not with the caterer; it is
neglect by the government. How can they refurbish
every other building without looking at what is
happening at the canteen?
"I stopped eating there three years ago. It was not
because the food is not good. The woman who
runs the place is doing well. The problem is with
the nature of the building and its environment.
Cows reared in Government House defecate around
the surrounding, giving the premises an offensive
odour. It is the same situation with goats; people
in the living quarters allow the animals to move
around freely. But for junior workers, how many of
the senior staff patronize the place? They have all
run away because it stinks. We now have to move
as far as Presidential Road or even New Haven to
find food, something we could easily have done
here, were the place convenient. The condition of
that building is a shame on Enugu government."
The staff added that several caterers brought in to
run the canteen declined the offer when they saw
the state of the place. It was also gathered that
Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, during a tour of
Government House, expressed shock at the
condition of the canteen.
The Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Uwakwe
Abugu, who acknowledged that the building was
really in a "bad shape", said the governor wants to
give the entire Government House a facelift.
"Under four months, the governor has rebuilt the
Protocol Unit, which was an eyesore when he
came to power. Work has advanced seriously and
is continuing everyday at the new Government
House. The office of the Deputy Governor is being
reconstructed, among others. The Government
House canteen is one of the buildings that needs
attention and we agree that it is dilapidated.
"My assurance to you is that the governor is aware
and is working very hard to ensure that
Government House wears a new look in the near
future. People should not just look at the ones that
have not been done but also at what have been
done, so far. This government will not shy away
from any challenge, especially the one that affects
the overall interests of the people," Abugu said.

Yet your nnandi kanu is still languishing in detention. I am beginning to feel sorry for the igbo, it just seem that they are losing. Their " we will fight nigeria again" mantra does not seem to work again. Boko Haram seem to have so far relegated the nigeria civil to a mere childs play infact if the igbo therefore tries to test nigeria integrity, nigeria only need Boys Scout to deal with the threat.

I doubt there's anywhere in the world where govt involves itself directly in d mining industry. U only encourage investors by creating enabling environment so the inbestor can pay revenues and employ ur teeming youths.

What obtains in the North is a few companies without mining intentions or poor financial capacities apply for licences over the said areas with as little as less than a million naira and beautiful proposals, then obtain the license and sit back waiting for a foreign company to come and buy same site or sign MOU worth 10 million and above for what was obtained at far lesser amount.

In this regard, very few coys show up and what u see is a proliferation of illegal miners exploiting these sites. Or worst still the foreigners are told most sites av bn obtained and fall victim of fraudsters who sell worthless sites to potential investors. Not to mention the bureaucracies in obtaining such licences.

U only mentioned gold...what about gems; tourmaline, rutile, amethyst, beryl, etc then for industrial minerals; tantalite, gypsum, talc, wolframite, manganese, galena, silica sand, limestone, etc the list is lenghty

Government needs to do alot in checking the bottlenecks listed above, create a secure and conducive environment for potemtial investors, cos in the long run the government is the ultimate beneficiary.

If you actually believe this, then you really don't know why the north is poor.
Infact the north gets the largest allocation from the oil, while the south-east gets the lowest. So the north is benefiting the most from southern oil.
Even if the north begins gold export and southern oil finishes, with the current idealogical backwardness in the north, the south would always remain richer.
Bro,I'm just tired. Let them split us up like the uk shikina

Yanks101:
But Nigeria that has undergone majority northern rule currently earns zero from gold just like other minerals in the south.
All these theories and defence mechanisms will not increase prosperity for the north. The south too has minerals that are lying completly fallow.
When oil is finished, they have a major mineral to fall back on..what do the south have,we should have true federalism

There was this post today about IGR and the amount northern nigeria generated with the resultant of heavy dependence on oil money. So I kept wondering whether there is no worthwhile mineral in the north apparently there is Gold. why nobody ever speaks of It I don't know, this year a nairaland user with the moniker shaarchris created a thread with ref to punch about 8trn lost in 2yrs to illegal gold mining but the post just died like that. So I checked the net and found some articles about nigerian gold with one in particular by the leadership http://leadership.ng/business/415308/gold-mining-could-become-nigerias-economic-mainstay

when reading the article alhaji shehu sani nigerian miners president gave lack of information as the reason for lack of foreign investment in gold production but in retrospect when it comes to exploration of oil there is always enough information
Countries like S.A earn healthy profits from gold, why can't we look beyond oil or is it because gold is found in the North?

This is a reply to teekay213's thread, living with a roomie is not always as bad as its painted to be. here are my own 5kinds of roommates you would like to have

1.The reliable
This group of roommates always have every assignment ready at most a week to the due date. I don't know how they keep track of everything but they just happen to have everything ready and they are always there to bail you out cos u know that you two would still meet at home

2.The boutiques
These are the kind that have every single piece of clothe u might need. They are always handy when there's no light to iron or u had a rough week and couldn't wash

3. The chefs
Food is a mathematical constant with these ones grin. They are not going to buy such things as gala or indomie but rather cook good food that would hold the tummy

4.The introvert:
Having an introvert as your roommate is one of the best things that could happen.you don't have to adjust your lifestyle to suit theirs rather they adjust theirs to suit yours and don't complain much

5.The atm
These set just bankroll your life,u charge them to do assignments, projects write attendance and the likes and they are more than happy to pay, money is never an issue with them but be careful how u spend before u forget what your goal is in the first place
