He owns a bank, controls many international franchises in Nigeria and has shares worth billions of naira in blue chip companies — but you are more likely to run into Peter Gregory Obi on a commercial flight than a private jet. You could even meet him sitting comfortably in economy class when he cannot get seats in business. Obi is probably the only Nigerian governor who regularly flew commercial while in office.

The news is that he has been picked as the running mate to former vice-president Atiku Abubakar — the main challenger to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 presidential election. The Atiku-Obi ticket will be on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party that lost power in 2015.

Born on July 19, 1961 in Onitsha, Anambra state, the former governor is arguably one of Nigeria’s most successful politicians and businessmen.

GOVERNORSHIP TUSSLE

To don his successful business career, Obi embraced politics in 2003 when he contested the gubernatorial election in Anambra as the candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA). However, Chris Ngige of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was declared winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Obi refused to accept the outcome of the election and would not go down without a fight. He challenged the result of the election in court, unwavering, until three years later when Ngige’s victory was overturned by the court of appeal on March 15, 2006. Obi assumed office the following day.

ILLEGAL IMPEACHMENT

On November 2, 2006, seven month in office, Obi was impeached by lawmakers of the state house of assembly over allegations of impropriety and gross misconduct. Obi was replaced the next day by Virginia Etiaba, his deputy, making her the first ever female governor in Nigeria’s history.

Like before, Obi proved again that he is an unrelenting fighter. He challenged his impeachment and was re-instated as the governor on February 9, 2007 by the court of appeal sitting in Enugu.
Obi would reveal later that he was kicked out of office for refusing to inflate the state’s budget.

“I was impeached in Anambra State, removed from office twice, the first one is because of this budget issue,” he said.

“They want to repair Office of the Governor, which is my office, the approved budget for 2006 was N298 million, I repaired everything with N43.2 million. They said I didn’t do it through due process, because they had awarded the contract.”

His political journey again hit the rocks on May 29, 2007, following the general election which saw Andy Uba declared winner. Obi returned to the court once more, this time contending that the four-year tenure he had won in the 2003 elections only started to run when he took office in March 2006.

In June 2007, the supreme court upheld Obi’s contention and returned him to office. This brought to an abrupt end to Uba’s tenure whose April 14, 2007 election the apex court nullified on the grounds that Obi’s four-year tenure should have remained undisturbed until March 2010.

Obi contested and won his re-election bid in 2010 and went ahead to rule the south-east state for another four years. He defeated Chukwuma Soludo, a professor and ex-governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

On March 17, 2014, Obi served out his second term and was succeeded by Willie Obiano.

‘POLITICS MADE ME POORER’

Politics is often conceived and believed to be a money making venture, where people go to “eat their share of the national cake”.

But Obi said contrary to this belief, he became poorer when he ventured into politics.

He said this in an interview with Vanguard in October 2017, when responding to the allegation levelled against him by Ubah that he demanded N7 billion from Obiano to support his governorship ambition.

Obi denied the allegations, describing it as “sheer blackmail”.

“At this stage of my life, I cannot support anybody for political and personal benefits. I have passed that stage and to do so is to abuse the Grace of God in my life,” he said.

“I did not go into politics wretched; I was already a director in three financial institutions, a director in four other major companies; all by the virtue of my investments. I was also running a successful family business.

“Going into politics even made me poorer but I won’t question anything because that is where God wants me to be.”

ROBUST CV

One or two pages, and the curriculum vitae (CV) of an average person is comprehensively captured but same cannot be said for Obi.

Obi attended Christ the King College, Onitsha where he completed his secondary school education. He was admitted to the University of Nigeria, Nsukka in 1980, graduating with a B.A (Hons) in philosophy in 1984. He also attended Lagos Business School, Nigeria (chief executive program), Harvard Business School, Boston, US (mid to mid marketing), London School of Economics (financial management/business policy), Columbia Business School, New York, US (marketing management).

He was appointed by ex-President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 as the chairman of Nigeria Security and Exchange Commission (SEC), and named honorary special adviser to the president on finance. In 2011, he was awarded the national honours of the commander of the order of Niger (CON).

THE ‘ONE WRIST WATCH’ SAGA

Obi has often claimed that he sacrificed a life of luxury for an “ordinary” one. Speaking at The Platform, a forum organised by the Covenant Christian Centre, in 2017, the ex-governor said he has only one wrist watch which he said he had been using for 17 years.

“I have said it to Nigerians, Peter Obi wears only black shoes, and I have two pairs, and I travel with them. The purpose of shoe is to protect the leg from being hurt. Nothing else. I bought this from Marks and Spencer, $49.99, finish,” he said.

“They said ‘we didn’t even see watch’, and I have said it to everyone, this is the only watch I have, I have worn it for 17 years. The purpose of watch is to keep time. Why would I keep a watch at home? Whose time is it keeping?”

But Nigerians voluntarily fact checked Obi’s claim and in little or no time, came up with pictures of Obi with different wristwatches adorning his hands. He had no answer to that. Many Nigerians accused him of stretching the facts just to advertise his modesty.

He is known as “aka gum” — one who is extremely frugal such that money is glued to his hands. He does not seem to dispute this as evident in some of his public speeches.

“As a governor, rather than stay in hotels where people pay over N500,000 per night, I stayed in a Hotel I paid less than 50,000. Rather than have a convoy of 20, I had that of five. Rather than maintain over 10 guest houses, I closed them down and restricted myself to the Lodge. Rather than travel on chartered planes, I flew even economy class most times. These are cost-saving measures that we deliberately introduced to keep government going,” he said.

A MAN WITH NO REGRETS

Asked if he has any regrets on his time as governor of Anambra, Obi said he has no regrets about anything in his life.

“I have never regretted anything in my life. I came here with nothing. I’m going away with nothing. Whatever I have in my life is by the grace of God. So, I have never had any regret,” he said.

“I can tell you, at 55, I’ve never been to hospital, except when the doctor said they saw a small growth in my system, they wanted to remove it and I was in hospital for two hours for that. I am married, have a wonderful family with two children, a wife, the best that anybody could wish to have. The things that give some people headache, I don’t have. So, why will I regret in life?”

Atiku Abubakar, presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP), is gradually making headway in his mission to win the heart of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, SaharaReporters can report.

Obasanjo is not the biggest fan of Atiku’s, the duo having endured a fractious relationship for more than a decade, starting from the latter years of their Aso Rock reign.

Just in April, Obasanjo, when asked if he would support Atiku’s presidential aspiration, answered: “For what”?

“How can I be on the same side with Atiku? To do what?” he had asked.

“If I support Atiku for anything, God will not forgive me. If I do not know, yes. But once I know, Atiku can never enjoy my support. I do not have personal grudges with anyone. If you do not do well for Nigeria, you do not do well for all of us.

“It is not a question of working with or not working with an individual. “If you are working for the good of Nigeria, I am working with you. If you are not working for the good of Nigeria it does not matter who you are I am not working with you.”

To Atiku’s credit, he launched a charm offensive on his former boss minutes after he was declared winner of the PDP presidential primary on Sunday, telling the crowd towards the end of his acceptance speech: "Finally, on a personal note, I wouldn't have been standing where I am today if my former boss, President Olusegun Obasanjo, had not made me his Vice President.

"Under his tutelage, I learnt quite a lot, and I believe the experience I have got is going to impact on how I eventually govern this country. I wish to pay my personal tribute to him."

SaharaReporters now understands Obasanjo’s hard stance against Atiku is gradually softening, and he is poised to “eventually endorse Atiku”.

“Baba believes that Buhari is too rigid, and you know Baba said long time ago that Buhari should go and rest in 2019,” a source close to the Owu-born politician told SaharaReporters on Tuesday.

“Yes, Atiku and Baba have a history. But these days, he has been saying Atiku, despite all his foibles, will at least create more jobs and help to revive the economy since leaving office in 2007, Obasanjo has publicly backed or rejected an incumbent or incoming President.

He rejected Goodluck Jonathan in 2015 while endorsing Buhari; however, in January 2018, he rejected Buhari’s re-election bid with a ‘letter bomb’.

Suleiman Abba, the former Inspector General of Police, has rained curses on the leadership of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He stated this after he was screened out of contesting for the Jigawa Central Senatorial District seat on the party's platform.

Although he did not expressly say so, Abba is believed to be referring to Adams Oshiomhole, National Chairman of the party, since he continually made reference "one person in the headquarters of APC".

Abba, who stormed the national secretariat of the party to register his displeasure after he was delisted from the participating in the conduct of the primary election in the state, addressed journalists in Abuja on Monday.

He said: "You are all aware that a list was released where I was duly cleared and another list was released delisting my name. This is not time for too much talk; this is time for prayers and I want you to join me in this prayer.

"The prayer is this: 'Almighty God, any person copying you and your power should not be in the headqaurters of this APC. Almighty God, if there is already one, you know what to do so that you don't allow him continue copying you. Almighty God, any person claiming to be an officer of the APC, if he will not work with the vision and mission of the APC, Almighty God, don't allow him to use the demon style of destroying."


Abba was disqualified by the screening committee from Jigawa South Senatorial District primary election. The committee claimed that his name was erroneously included in the list of NWC-cleared aspirants.

Bolaji Abdullahi, former spokesman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), says Senate President Bukola Saraki did not betray him.

Abdullahi said this in reaction to reports that the senate president worked against his governorship ambition.

An aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara state, Abdullahi withdrew from the race on Monday.

In a statement, Abdullahi said though the outcome of the primaries may have been disappointing, he has “accepted it as the will of Allah”.

He said the sacrifices he made for the party were not dependent on expectations of a reward but were done out of personal principles.

“Following the reactions that have trailed the Governorship Primaries of our party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kwara state, it has become imperative for me to make the following clarifications,” the statement read.

“While the outcome of the primaries may have been disappointing, I have accepted it as the will of Almighty Allah, who alone gives power. I want to thank all those who have expressed concerns for me. I am humbled and flattered by your support.

“However, I will like to note that there are many factors at play in politics. Therefore, interpreting what happened as betrayal is not correct. My leader, Dr. Bukola Saraki, did not betray me.

“Whatever sacrifices I have made in the past were based on my personal principles, and were not contingent on expectations of any reward. I remain a loyal member of the Saraki political family under the leadership of Dr. Bukola Saraki.”

The debt status of states in Nigeria have been revealed.


Most of the states’ debts exceeded 50 per cent of their annual revenues.

The debt profiles of about 18 states exceed their gross and net revenues by more than 200 per cent.


Lagos, Osun and Cross River states record over 480 per cent debt to gross revenue.

The Fiscal Responsibility Commission, FRC, stated this in its 2016 Annual Report obtained by Punch in Abuja on Monday.

It said that the debt may have increased by 2017 since there were no effort by the states to clear them.


FRC said the development was contrary to the guidelines of the Debt Management Office on debt sustainability.

The guidelines said that the debt status of each state should not exceed 50 per cent of the statutory revenue in the previous 12 months.

The report stated, “In the light of the DMO’s guidelines on the Debt Management Framework, specifically, sections 222 to 273 of the Investment and Securities Act, 2007 pertaining to debt sustainability, according to the guidelines, the debt to income ratio of states should not exceed 50 per cent of the statutory revenue for the preceding 12 months.”

An analysis presented in the FRC report, however, showed that most states flouted the directive.

In fact, the debt status of many states exceeded the debt to revenue ratio by more than 100 per cent. The analysis was based on the debt profile of the states as of December 31, 2016.

The states with the highest debt to gross revenue ratios were Lagos (670.42 per cent), Osun (539.25 per cent), Cross River (486.49 per cent), Plateau (342.01 per cent), Oyo (339.56 per cent), Ekiti (339.34 per cent), Ogun (329.47 per cent), Kaduna (297.26 per cent) and Imo (292.82 per cent).

Others were Edo (270.8 per cent), Adamawa (261.96 per cent), Delta (259.63 per cent), Bauchi (250.75 per cent), Nasarawa (250.36 per cent), Kogi (221.92 per cent), Enugu (207.49 per cent), Zamfara (204.91 per cent), and Kano (202.61 per cent).

The debt to net revenue ratio of the states put some of the states in even more precarious situations. The debt to net revenue of Lagos, for instance, is 930.96 per cent, while that of Cross River is 940.64 per cent.

The only states whose debt did not exceed the 50 per cent ratio by more than 100 per cent are Anambra, Borno, Jigawa, Kebbi, Sokoto, Yobe and the Federal Capital Territory.

The debt to revenue ratio is very important in debt analysis as it can give an indication of the capacity of the debtor to service and repay the debt.

However, the FRC noted that it should not be concluded that a state had over-borrowed because its debt to revenue ratio was more than 50 per cent.

The report stated, “It should be noted that the fact that some states exceeded the threshold of 50 per cent of their total revenue is not an indication that they over-borrowed as the debt limits of the governments in the federation are yet to be set.

“Furthermore, only total revenue is used for the foregoing analysis as comprehensive data on the states’ Internally Generated Revenue were not available. In any case, the IGR on the average is not more than eight per cent of the states’ total revenue except for Lagos State. In essence, the non-inclusion of the IGR may not distort the result of the analysis.

“Therefore, there is a need for each of these states to work towards bringing their respective consolidated debts within the 50 per cent threshold of their total revenue in order to guarantee a general public debt sustainability in the country.”
