Malaria is highly endemic in Nigeria and it remains one of the leading causes of childhood and maternal morbidity and mortality in the country.

Nigeria is deeply committed to making progress towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals and it recognizes the fact that, without firm efforts to control malaria, achievement of the targets related to child mortality, maternal mortality, and reducing the burden of communicable disease will not be possible.

Malaria therefore constitutes a significant development challenge for Nigeria. Interventions for reducing malaria burden in the country are documented in the national malaria strategic plan with Government taking the lead in its implementation with the support of all the RBM partners.

The DFID funded and Malaria Consortium led malaria programme, SuNMaP, provided technical assistance and other support to the Nigeria National Malaria Elimination Programme (NMEP) covering the period 2008 to 2016.

The anticipated follow on project, SuNMaP2 has been designed to strengthen the management and technical capacity of NMEP, State Malaria Elimination Programme (SMEP) and their stakeholders to drive the implementation of the National Malaria Strategic Plan, 2014 to 2020 and achieve its ambitious targets.

On Saturday, after the postponement of the 2019 Presidential and Federal Assembly elections, the electoral umpire INEC announced that all open campaign remains banned.

However, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) opposed this as they encouraged their members to keep campaigning for their candidates of choice.

As a result of this, the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) has decide to meet today to reconsider the ban on electioneering campaign during the one week extension of poll.

INEC, according to its national chairman’s Chief Press Secretary (CPS), Mr. Rotimi Oyekanmi, would meet to review its position and decide whether or not to reopen campaigns.

The two leading parties have argued that the commission’s restriction has no basis in law.

The PDP also alleged that fresh facts have confirmed that officials of the federal government and the APC have been sabotaging INEC in a well-orchestrated plot to engineer staggered presidential election, contrary to simulated stance by the presidency and the party’s National Chairman, Mr. Adams Oshiomhole.

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in a bid to play a role in helping the elctoral umpire in conducting a free, fair credible elections in 2019 has done what has never been done before.

For the first time, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has released announced the release of some of it's members as election observers across the country to monitor the 2019 general elections.

The President of the association, Rev Samson Ayokunle, who was speaking at the Trinity Baptist Church, Ajobo, Ibadan, Oyo State, said the observers would take note of malpractices that may arise during the elections and relay same to the control room at the Christian Secretariat in Abuja.

Meanwhile, IPMAN Members Directed To Reduce Price of Fuel

“You know, for the first time in the history of CAN, we are sending election observers across the federation to observe how elections are going on.

“If there is any malpractice anywhere, they will report (it) immediately to the control room at the Christian Secretariat in Abuja. We are sending 1,000 election observers across the federation and we had never done that before. It costs money but we are committed to it,” he said.

He noted that except Christians take this week to engage in prayers, it was not certain the elections would hold “if it’s about the things we see in the spirit.”

He noted, “About what is happening in the country, I want you to pray very well this week. If it’s about the things we see in the spirit, it is not sure that elections will hold at all. We won’t want elections to hold like they didn’t hold; if that should happen, it would cause trouble or even lead to war.

“Please, pray very well this week so that the elections might be able to hold on February 23 as the INEC has said. The postponement, to us, is a national embarrassment.”

He stressed the need for prayers against “People who think they are powerful” and were bent on sabotaging the electoral process to suit their selfish and personal interest.

As a result of this, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) has directed its members to reduce pump price of petrol in order to help lessen the transport burden.

The National President of the association, Elder Chinedu Okworonkwo has directed its members to cut the price from N145 per litre to N140. This was made known through the Chairman, IPMAN Kano state chapter, Alhaji Bashir Dan-Malam.

All IPMAN members are expected to comply with the directive from Feb. 20 to Feb. 25.

He said the decision followed the Saturday’s last-minute postponement of presidential and National Assembly elections by Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

According to him, Nigerians travelled to different places across the country to cast their votes, but to their dismay, the election was shifted to Feb. 23.

“IPMAN was prompted to slash N5 from the N145 per litre official Petroleum pump price in a bid to motivate Nigerians to return to vote again on Feb. 23.

“We urge all our members across Nigeria to immediately reduce the fuel pump price from N145 per litre to N140 per litre.

“This is because of the political situation that hit the country after INEC suddenly announced the postponement of presidential and National Assembly elections after Nigerians were fully prepared.

According to VANGUARD, THE Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, Wednesday, alleged that the federal government was plotting to forge fake signature and resignation letter of the suspended Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Walter Onnoghen.

The coalition, in a statement by its spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, claimed that it was in possession of evidence of what it called a “failed attempt around 11pm Tuesday night to force the CJN to sign a draft resignation letter taken to him by a former Attorney-General Federation.” “We have learnt that the Presidency is asking that he resigns immediately or he is arrested ahead of the election.

At the meeting, the strategy to force Justice Onnoghen to resign as directed by the Presidency was discussed starting with the emissary sent to the CJN by 11pm yesterday night to sign the draft resignation letter. “The meeting has also resolved to forge the signature of the CJN and issue out a fake resignation letter for him and arrest him immediately. “The plan is to keep him incommunicado to make it impossible for anybody to reach him to confirm if he was the one who signed it.

“The Presidency has also directed the Chairman of the CCT, Danladi Umar, to issue a bench warrant against the CJN to pave way for the police to arrest him. “The EFCC has also been directed to abandon the petition he sent to NJC and move in to arrest the CJN if he fails to resign today.

“The Presidency is desperate after realising that it has misfired in the method adopted in the offensive against the CJN and now feels the only way to come out of the log jam is to force the CJN to resign so that it can score a cheap point before the Saturday election and also perfect the swearing in of the impostor acting CJN.

The Appeal court sitting in Sokoto has dismissed the appeal brought to it by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Zamfara state challenging the judgment of the lower court which upheld the party primaries of the party in the state.

In a judgment delivered by a three-member panel of judges unanimously dismissed the appeal following its withdrawal by the appellant, Aminu Jaji.

Earlier this week, it was reported that about three judges of the Appeal Court in Sokoto withdrew from the case over bribery allegation to the tune of $3million (dollars).

Kabiru Marafa – a respondent, alleged that there was bribery allegation against the judges which made them lose confidence in them.
Counsel to Senator Marafa, Barrister Muhammad Nuhu, alleged that there was a posting on social media platform, alleging that the judges had received three million Dollars from one Kabiru Kamba to compromise.

“Because of that my client is not comfortable with them and urge the president of the Court of Appeal to constitute a new panel to entertain the case,” he said.

Responding to the allegation, the presiding Judge, Justice Ahmed Belgori said they have decided to disqualify themselves from the case over the grievous allegation in view of the present situation in the judiciary and the country.

About 1,000 Supervisory Presiding Officers have commenced training in preparation for the forthcoming general elections.

INEC Public Relations Officer in Lagos State, Mr Femi Akinbiyi disclosed this to Newsmen in Lagos during an interview.

According to Akinbiyi, the three-day training, which started on Wednesday, was a step taken by the commission to conduct flawless elections on February 16 and March 2.

“As part of preparations for the 2019 general elections, about 1,000 SPOs commenced training on Wednesday.

“These Supervisory Presiding Officers will in turn train both the Presiding Officers and Assistant Presiding Officers.

“The commission is not leaving any stone unturned in its preparations for the elections; we will do everything humanly possible to deliver on our mandate,” said Akinbiyi.

Reprenentatives of the governments of the United States and that of the United Kingdom have issued warnnings to perpetrators of violence be it before, during and after the Nigeria’s general elections that they would be made to face some form of sanctions, including visa restrictions.

They made their views known in Abuja and promised to closely monitor actions of individuals and withhold or withdraw visas of those who interfere in the democratic process or instigate violence.

They also pledged their unwavering support for a genuinely free, fair, transparent, and peaceful electoral process, insisting that they have no preference for any specific candidate or party.

“We, and other democratic nations, will be paying close attention to actions of individuals who interfere in the democratic process or instigate violence against the civilian population before, during, or after the elections,” said a statement from the US Embassy in Abuja.

“We will not hesitate to consider consequences – including visa restrictions – for those found to be responsible for election-related violence or undermining the democratic process. Under U.S. immigration law, certain violations may also lead to restrictions on family members,” the statement added.

The Federal Government is making plans to increase the number of beneficiaries in the ongoing N-power social investment Programme going on across the country. The vice President Yemi Osinbajo made this known at a town hall meeting organised by the sons and daughters of Remoland at Akarigbo Palace in Sagamu, Ogun State on Wednesday.

The Vice president disclosed that the Federal Government is working on modalities to expand and strengthen the N-Power programme by increasing its beneficiaries from 500,000 to one million.

Prof. Osinbajo hinted that the current administration has been able to stem the tide of employment with the provision of “Tradermoni” and “Marketmoni” through the “N-Power” scheme.

He also said that all traders from Remoland, in Ogun East district, have been enumerated and captured electronically through the “Marketmoni”. He also encouraged participants at the town hall meeting to key into federal government programmes when they are available.

On the issue of creating an enabling environment for investment, the VP said said the responsibility of establishing a cargo airport rests squarely on the state government.

The Federal Government has redirected applicants on a new Basic Registry and Information System in Nigeria (BRISIN) Employment Portal to be used for the recruitment application.

Dr Anthony Uwa, the Head of BRISIN Implementation told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), on Tuesday in Abuja that it had become necessary following the difficulty applicants encountered using the previous portal.

Uwa said the difficulties were as a result of some technical issues which would soon be resolved.
