CHIEF OF AIR STAFF, AIR MARSHAL SADIQUE ABUBAKAR VISITS GOVERNOR ROCHAS OKOROCHA IN OWERRI

- AS GOVERNOR OKOROCHA SAYS IMO CAN NOW BOAST OF FEDERAL GOVERNMENT’S PRESENCE UNDER PRESIDENT MOHAMMADU BUHARI

Governor Rochas Okorocha has said that in less than two years of President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration, Imo State can now boast of Federal Government’s presence, which was never the Case before now.

Governor Okorocha had made the Claim when the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar came on a courtesy call with a team of his officers, at the Government House Owerri on Tuesday, February 28, 2017, adding that President Buhari had approved the siting of an Airforce Command in the State, noting too that the gesture has given the people of the State a sense of belonging.

His words “I once cried out several times in lamentation that this part of the Country has been forgotten completely in terms of federal government’s presence. But I want to put it on record that today President Mohammadu Buhari’s administration has remembered Imo State. First, for giving us an International Cargo airport, an Airforce Command, three Command Army Schools, Police Marine University and Police Finance and Administrative College”.

He said “All these have just happened only within two years of this administration, but before now, there was no single presence of federal government in this part of the world. I thank the Air Marshal for speedily putting things in place. What is important is the military precision with which you have approached this development. Only few months ago this idea was mooted, I saw officers coming in and things being put in place. The speed is gladdening, hence we responded likewise by providing a temporary office”.

Governor Okorocha pledged the support of the State government to the speedy completion of the permanent site and also said that the Airforce base will complement the International Cargo airport as Security will be assured and the economy of the State will also be boosted.

The governor further stated “To complement the efforts of the Airforce in setting up Schools and hospitals in the State, we want to donate the 200 bed hospital along the airport road to the Nigeria airforce, and equipped with all medical equipments, to be now known as Air force Medical Centre”.

He also advised them to think of establishing a higher institution in the State because of its quietness, adding that what they should do, given the security of the area is to liaise with him to see how they could build the first Air force degree Awarding Institution in this part of the world, since Imo is the headquarter of education in Nigeria.

In his speech earlier, Air Marshal Sadiq Abubakar thanked the governor for his support to the 211 regiment group of the Nigeria Airforce that is been located in Owerri, adding that the Airforce has come to the State to add value to the Imo Society, and to ensure that the communities and people are secured.

He explained “The Unit we are placing here is a highly skilled unit, a quick response group, one of the best in the Airforce, meaning that in the event of anything, they should be able to respond to it as quickly as possible. They are highly skilled and tactical. I advise kidnappers and armed robbers to have a rethink and change their lives unless they want to meet their waterloo”.

He commended and congratulated the governor for his giant strides in the educational development of the state and the nation and for his deep sense of patriotism and concern for the society, pointing out that the Nigeria Airforce will create an enabling peaceful environment for him to sustain the growth of the State.

He also promised that they will soon move into the Airforce site in the State as it was captured in the 2017 budget, assuring too that they will equally help the host communities and other communities in health outreach services.

Owelle Rochas Okorocha; A Profile of Struggle & Service To Humanity - Wikipedia

Rochas Okorocha. Nigerian politician
Rochas Okorocha.
Imo State Governor
Incumbent
Assumed office 29 May 2011
Personal details:
Born 22 September 1962 (age 54)
Ideato South , Imo State , Nigeria
Political party All Progressives Congress (APC)

Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha (born 22 September 1962) is a Nigerian multi billionaire businessman, education philanthropist, politician from Imo State ,
Nigeria who won the 6 May 2011 gubernatorial election in Imo State and was reelected for his second term on April 11, 2015. He is the founder of Rochas Foundation, a charity comprising a number of special schools that are spread all over Nigeria that gives scholarship to the less privileged children in the Nigerian society. In his first attempt, he ran on the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) platform [1] and ran on the All Progressives Congress in his second shot. In both occasions, Rochas defeated his closest rival, incumbent governor Ikedi Ohakim and serving Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha , by a close margin of votes and had to go for reruns.
Background
Rochas, an Igbo , was born on 22 September 1962 in
Ogboko, Ideato South , Imo State . He attended Juladaco High School, Jos (1976-1981). He studied at the University of Jos (1990-1991), obtaining a diploma in Public Administration. He returned to the University of Jos (1993-1994) to obtain an advanced diploma in Public Administration. [2] Career positions include President, Nigeria Red Cross Society, President/Founder, Rochas Foundation Inc, President, Rochas Group of Companies Limited, Pro Chancellor, African Business School and Former Chairman, Board of Nigerian Airspace Management Agency. [2]
From Rags to Riches
Rochas Okorocha wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He was born into a poor family. And as he puts it, “I found out that I was born into a home that is relatively poor from all the definitions of poverty. So, I understand from the onset that I have a task ahead of me and the name of the game is survival." [3] He said he had to work extra hard to make both ends meet by combining education with street trading. He said he didn’t have a straight school experience while growing up. He was involved in street trading at one point in time or the other. He said, "Honestly, there has never been a dull moment in my life. In fact, I engaged in too many things just for the sole purpose to survive.” [3]
Okorocha, who acknowledged that he broke even early in life, said “The first one was at a very tender age of my life when I was selling used clothes. I broke even because I was able to buy a bus. I was able to buy a bus in secondary school and I bought television set in primary school as small as I was from the sale of oranges, coconuts and used clothes. What I do is that if I sell, I post some of the profits and at the end of the year I buy something with it. So, it has been a worthwhile experience but where I would say I made the first one million dollars, was as a commission agent from the sale of used equipment in Bauchi State where Balfour Beatty was constructing the Balanga Dam. When the company was winding up I was one of the agents that sold used equipment and I made N1.1 million when it was equivalent to $1 million dollars. And I put the entire money into the business of used cars then later graduated to the sale of new cars to what they called ‘Rochas Motors” but what made me really rich was real estate business. [3]
“At the age of nine I bought a television set, at 14 I bought a bus, at the age of 19/20 I became head of a commercial school, at the 22/23 years I became a proprietor of a school and I went into cement business (BBC) in Gboko, Benue State. And at the age of 24 plus I got married, at the age of 29 I became a member of National Constitutional Conference, I became a member of Federal Character Commission thereafter then I went to contest for governor and failed and shortly after that I ran for presidency and later became a presidential adviser. I ran for presidency again. You see, I moved on and on in life with hard work and challenges." [3]
Early political career
Okorocha was a Commissioner on the Federal Character Commission and a Member of the National Constitutional Conference. [2] When democracy was restored in 1999, Rochas Okorocha competed in the primaries to be People's Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for governor of Imo State, but lost to Achike Udenwa . [4] He moved to the All Nigeria People's Party (ANPP), and was an unsuccessful candidate for President on the ANPP platform in 2003. He returned to the PDP, and President Olusegun Obasanjo appointed him as Special Adviser on Inter-Party affairs. [5]
Rochas Okorocha formed the Action Alliance (AA) party in 2005, planning to become a Presidential candidate for the AA in the 2007 elections. [5] He again returned to the PDP, and in September 2007 indicated that he was interested in becoming PDP National Chairman. [6] After Governor Ikedi Ohakim decamped from the Progressive Peoples Alliance (PPA) to the PDP in July 2009, Okorocha denied that Ohakim had taken over the PDP in the state, saying he was named as leader since he was governor, but a proper PDP congress should be held to decide on policy. [7]
Imo state governor
Okorocha decamped from the PDP to the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), to run as APGA candidate for Imo State Governor in the April 2011 national elections. A few weeks later, in December 2010, the APGA suspended Okorocha from the party over what it described as anti-party activities pending an investigation of his conduct. [8] It was reported that he had stormed the Imo State Secretariat of APGA with dozens of thugs, who beat up several top officers of the Party. Okorocha and his companions had also threatened the Imo State Chairman and Secretary of APGA. [9] However, Okorocha went on to campaign as APGA candidate and won subsequently. Rochas in 2013 decamped to the All Progressive Congress.
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared that the Imo State gubernatorial elections held on 26 April 2011 were inconclusive since the collation of results was marred by irregularities. [10] The INEC ordered reruns in four local government areas and one ward, to be held on 6 May 2011. [11] In the event, elections were not held in
Oguta local government area due to a security threat.
[12] The final results had Okorocha of the APGA declared winner with 336,859 votes. He was followed by the incumbent governor Ikedi Ohakim of the PDP with 290,490 votes. Former Senator Ifeanyi Araraume of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) was third with 107,068 votes. [11] President Goodluck Jonathan congratulated Okorocha on his election, saying the people of Imo State had spoken through the ballot box. [13]
In preparatory for the 2015 elections, former deputy speaker, House of Representatives, Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, threw in his hat for the governorship tussle. After being able to snatch away the PDP tickets from other contenders, he had to slug it out with the incumbent, Okorocha. The election eventually took place on April 11, 2015 after the first date was shifted by six weeks when the federal authorities cited security concerns. Just as Okorocha's first election debacle, the second one was also declared inconclusive.
INEC declared the April 11 governorship polls in Imo inconclusive, a development that led to the cancellation of elections in more than 250 polling units in 23 of the 27 local government areas. The Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Mr. Gabriel Ada, listed the state constituencies affected in the re-run to include; Ikeduru, Isiala Mbano, Isu, Oguta, Owerri West, and Oru East. He explained that the electoral commission ordered re-run for the governorship election because of the 79,000 difference between the votes scored by the leading and the second candidates. [14]
Okorocha won the rerun election fixed for April 25, 2015. [14]
APC
On 2 March 2013 Rochas led an APGA faction to form the All Progressives Congress . [15] He was later elected by his colleague governors in the opposition as Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum. [16]

IMO – AIR, INAUGURATED, WITH MAIDEN FLIGHT LANDING AT SAM MBAKWE CARGO AIR-PORT
- AS GOVERNOR OKOROCHA SAYS IMO NOT AFFECTED BY RECESSION

A maiden flight of Imo Air owned by the Imo State Government, Tuesday, January 24, 2017 landed at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport Owerri with the first set of passengers, and with the State governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, members of the State Executive Council and thousands of Imo people at the airport to celebrate the feat.

The 140-Seater plane with Imo Air written boldly on the body landed at the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport FROM LAGOS at exactly 11.42 pm, and is being operated for the State by DANA Airline because according to the governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha the State has not got the license to operate full – blown airline.

In his speech at the Airport to herald the arrival of the Maiden Imo Air, Governor Rochas Okorocha said it has been his dream and sincere desire to position Imo State on the fast lane of development, prosperity and growth, adding that he won’t rest on his oars until that dream is realized.

Governor Okorocha also said that Imo is not affected by the much-talked about recession in the Country because some people might wonder why the State should dabble into Airline business in time of recession explaining that the State has cleared arrears of Pension and has paid Salaries upto December 2016, and is about to commence the payment of January Salary.

His words, “this is a happy moment in the State. The aim of going into the Air business is because I want to drive traffic to Imo State as Imo is genuinely becoming the fastest developing City outside Abuja and Lagos. For this, there is need for more airlines to cushion the effects of high traffic coming to the State”.

The governor continued “Imo government does not have an operating air license. So we needed to partner with a good and qualified airline operator. Hence, the choice of DANA Air because of its proven track record and sincerity of purpose. The Imo Air will be operated by DANA and we have a contract of ten years with them. We have five of this aircraft and the first one has just landed and four other ones will start operation in few weeks time”.

The governor explained, “The International Cargo Airport will soon kick-start to supplement the efforts of Imo Air. In our pursuit of making Imo better, Imo International Cargo Airport will soon commence operations. Work is going on smoothly and by April God’s willing the fastest International Cargo Plane will arrive Imo State. This, we believe will help drive up commercial activities in the State. Imo is a hub for business and there is no better place to invest now in Nigeria than Imo State as inspite of the recession the State is still flourishing and progressing because of its visionary leadership”.

He informed that Imo Air will have 10% discount to all Imo indigenes flying the Plane and the operation will equally employ over 30% of Imo sons and daughters to help in the management of the Imo Air”.

The DANA AIR Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Mbanuzuo Obi said, “The partnership between DANA and the good people of Imo State will create employment and better working relationship for the State. Imo AIR is in safe hands and the choice of DANA AIR for the partnership is an excellent choice as DANA AIR is registered with INTERNATIONAL AIR TRANSPORT ASSOCIATION operations and security treasuring”.

He added that DANA AIR has the best Customer Service Awards for 3 years running and has also been known to operate one of the top most operational brands in Nigeria. He commended Okorocha for his vision and passion for excellence.

IMO SET UP AIRLINE, ACQUIRES BRAND NEW AIRCRAFT
Imo State is set to become the first State in Nigeria to own and operate an airline company operated by Dana Air, as the governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha leads his appointees and stakeholders in the State to take delivery of the first batch of aircrafts at the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.
The carrier named "IMO AIR" is billed to hold its own against other operators in the Nigerian aviation sector, while providing, enhanced revenue for the State, massive employment for Imo citizens and business opportunities for Imolites and Ndi Igbo in general.
Also in the offing is the Imo International Cargo which targets to open the Southeast up to importers and exporters of all kinds of commodities, thereby reducing the over reliance on Lagos, Kano and other international airports for the export and import of goods into the country. This initiative is no doubt a boost for the Southeast economic liberation struggle. According to the Governor, the cargo aspect of the "IMO AIR" initiative will take off by April, 2017.
GOD HAS BLESSED IMO STATE!
