President of the Arewa Youth Consultative Forum, Shettima Yerima, in this interview with BAYO AKINLOYE says the statement issued by the Coalition of Northern Groups on Tuesday asking the Igbo to leave the North for their various states in the South-East was quoted out of context

Are you on the run from the Nigeria Police?

For what? Why should I be on the run? I have committed no crime.

You have been declared wanted by the police and the Kaduna State Government for the quit notice you and other groups of youths in the North issued to the Igbo living in the region.

I have not received any invitation from the Nigeria Police. But if I am invited by the police, I will willingly honour their invitation. There is no issue about that – but as of the time that I am talking to you right now (Thursday), the police have not called me for any interrogation.

Do you have any apology concerning the statement you, along with others, issued on Tuesday?

Apology for what? And exactly what part of the statement are you referring to? The Coalition of Northern Groups, after due consultation came up with a position as regard the disposition of the Indigenous People of Biafra. Our position is very clear: we have the intention of helping the Igbo to get the international attention they want so that they can leave Nigeria in peace. At no time did we advocate violence or make any attempt to incite anyone in the North or any other part of the country, to engage in violence against any tribe.

But you gave them a three-month notice to leave the North?

Yes; because by then they would have had a referendum to decide whether they want to be part of Nigeria or they want to have an independent nation of their own. If after the three months they succeed in getting a referendum in having an independent state of Biafra, what business do they have again in the North? They should go back to their Biafra. We did not ask them to go. They said they want to go. They are the ones demanding for their own independent nation and we said ‘OK, we will help you.’

I should add that the silence of the Igbo in the North concerning the call by IPOB for a state of Biafra indicates that they are in support of the agitation – it is what we term ab initio, as conspiracy of silence. They have agreed to have their own nation; then they should go – IPOB is speaking for them. If not, they should have come out to say, ‘No, IPOB does not represent us. We do not want to be part of the Biafra being called by IPOB.’ They didn’t say that. We are all living witnesses to the Biafran agitation. Everybody wants to leave Nigeria but nobody moves. Therefore, it clearly means they (Igbo in the North) are in agreement with them (IPOB).

It is not our intention or plan to push them out of the North by force – no, that’s not our intention. We won’t do that. We are only encouraging them to leave. If they have decided to be part of an independent Biafran state, why are they wasting time still living in other people’s land? They should go to their region if they want to go; we will help them to leave. They should leave. But if at the end of the referendum and they vote to remain as part of Nigeria, we are willing to receive them back. Our declaration is by no means a call for violence. By upbringing and orientation, as northern youths we are not inclined to violence. We believe in peaceful resolution of conflicts.

decide whether they want to remain a part of the country; and we are helping them to get the referendum initiated, hoping that by the end of the three month’s (ultimatum), they would have chosen to form their own nation. We will continue to help them to the extent that their voice would be heard in the international community. We will help them to ensure that the African Union, the Economic Community of West African States, the United Nations and other international organisations come to their aid. There was a referendum in the United Kingdom; was there any bloodshed there?

Politics / Igbo Quit Notice: Fear Grips Britain And United Nations Amid Nigeria's Imminent by ukomko: 6:37pm On Jun 10, 2017
The ultimatum given to the Igbos by Northern youths of Arewa extraction to vacate the region on or before October 1st, 2017 hasn't gone down well with Nigeria's elites and United Nation.

The binding secret of any gathering or union interests. This interest could be anything considering the context of the usage. It can be political interest, economic interest, financial interest, selfish interest, and many other interests including sexual satisfaction interest.

According to Encyclopedia, “Economic Interest refers to a substantial financial interest in investments, employment, awarding of contracts, purchases, leases, sales, or similar matters”.

Looking at selfish interest, the elites of old Eastern, Western and Northern regions of Nigeria aren't happy with the current development in Nigeria. The elites, out of their selfish interest, have tried to relegate Northern youths ultimatum to an inconsequential position.

Immediately after the ultimatum, one of the elites, the current Governor of Kaduna state, Mallam Nasir El Rufai, ordered the arrest of the youths which the police haven't done up until the moment of writing this article.

The position of the northern youths represents the voice of the Northern masses while that of El Rufai represents the voice of the elites.

To solidify 6th of June Kaduna Declaration ultimatum, Northern youths held another meeting on Thursday, 8th of June, 2017.

The meeting had in attendance all Northern pressure groups, they restated their position to pursue Igbos out of the northern Nigeria and murder stubborn ones who refuse to go. This meeting was also held in Arewa house, Kaduna state.

Before I go on with the elites' fear let me quickly educate the masses what's going on between United Nations, Nigeria and Biafra.

United Nations is made up of representatives from different countries, namely Germany, USA, Britain, France, Saudi Arabia, Republic of China and etc.

UN has a huge economic interest in Nigeria. To worsen the whole situation, ninety percent (90%) of this interest is located in Biafraland.

The bone of contention in this UN complexity is Biafran oil. Biafran territory houses ninety-five percent (95%) black gold in Nigeria. All the oil companies from these member states have drilling field in Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Imo, Anambra, Abia, Delta and Cross River state.

Surprisingly, It took Northern youths’ ultimatum before UN could even mention the name ‘Biafra’. In their attempts to protect their interest, they said: “sit-at-home order was observed by five South Eastern states”.

This is a greater height of wickedness and cheap propaganda. The same UN couldn't make any comment when BBC and other MSM reported Igweocha (Rivers State), Anambra, Akwa Ibom, Abia, Bayelsa, Delta and other states' compliance with the sit-at-home order given to the Biafrans by their leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

United Nations and Nigerian elites have economic and selfish interests respectively. Member states of United Nation are moved by their oil interest while Nigerian elites have selfish-looting interest.

The true question here's “will United Nation member states lose their economic interest at the emergence of a free Biafran state?”

The answer to the above question is “NO”. Biafra as a nation will protect UN member states’ interest with lasting peace. The issues of insecurity would be a thing of past, militancy will cease to exist, there will be stability within Sub-Saharan and entire Africa. UN member states will carry out their business without fear of abduction.

The only solution to Africa's instability is a free Biafran nation. Biafra will not be an enemy to its environs rather a friend and ally.

Another question is “will emergence of a free Biafran nation stop elites’ selfish interest?”

The answer to the above question is “YES”. Don't make mistakes about it, Biafra shall have no room for people with dubious characters. Accountability will champion the way forward for every Province.

Now that the Nigerian masses of Arewa extraction have called international communities, United Nation to conduct a referendum to allow Biafrans go, UN needs to listen to this call before crisis cum civil unrest goes out of proportion.

Nigerian elites including Bukola Saraki, the current Senate President, need to listen to the people that gave them mandate, they have spoken and their call for disintegration of Nigeria can never be swept under the carpet because its consequences will be disastrous.

Biafrans want to be free and Arewa wants to be free also. Nobody should sacrifice millions of youths for her selfish reasons, Nigeria isn't working, hasn't worked before and will never work.

We appeal to the conscience of international communities, including United Nations, to wage in positively to this issue before a repeat of 1945 pogrom, 1966 pogrom and 1967-70 genocidal war against Biafrans.

Our life is more important to us than oil, it doesn't mean we can't defend ourselves or resources, we did it in 1967-70 Biafran war and will improve on it this time around if need be.

Let us nip this looming disaster in the bud before it degenerates to tsunami.

Every Biafran in the North should come back home and fortunately, I'm glad they've started returning back. Please don't listen to selfish elites, by the time it'll start, Emir will go dumb. Blood-tasty barbarians won't know the difference between Emeka from Ikwerre Rivers State, Emeka from Asaba Delta state and Emeka from Imo state. To them up north, everybody from old Eastern region is Igbo.

Referendum still remains the best solution, may God dash or even borrow our elites brain to evict this looming disaster and do the needful. Amen.

Politics / Quit Notice On Igbos Best Gift From North Since 1970 – IPOB by ukomko: 10:01am On Jun 10, 2017
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has thanked Northern youths for the quit notice given Igbos in the region.

IPOB said the move would only help to hasten the actualization of Biafra.

Recall that a Coalition of Northern Youths had in the Igbo-must-leave order said, “We are hereby placing the Nigerian authorities and the entire nation on notice, that as from the 1st of October, 2017, we shall commence the implementation of visible actions to prove to the whole world that we are no longer part of any federal union that should do with the Igbo.”

This statement has drawn outrage and condemnation from different parts of the country.

IPOB, however, said it welcomed the quit notice by the Northern youths, while describing it as an exciting order and expressed its appreciation to the youths for the decision, which it said was going to hasten the actualization of the Biafra state.

Younger brother to IPOB leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, Prince Emmanuel Kanu, told reporters that “the quit notice is one of the best things to have come from the North since the struggle for Biafra started and our people should accept it with happiness.

“This is what we have been looking for all these while; we in IPOB are thankful to the Northern youths for the quit notice given Biafrans in the north to leave.

“This is the best action that has come from Nigeria since the struggle began. We equally thank them for giving our people a time frame within which to leave; if they had been doing like this, there would not have been any problem.”

He urged Biafrans living in the north to come back without hesitation to avoid being killed as was the case in 1967.

He also appealed to governors of the South East to make enough vehicles available to bring Igbos in the north back home.

Also speaking on the investment of Igbos scattered all over the north, which was put at over N44 trillion, Prince Emmanuel said the investments were covered by the relevant sections of the United Nations, UN, charter.

According to him, “They should know that Biafra of today is not that of 1967, we are now more organized and united.

“The period of taking properties belonging to Ndigbo is gone and gone for good; it will not happen again because we are now even more sophisticated.”

He added that Arewa would continue to be the friends of Ndigbo even at the fullness of the actualization of Biafra.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has claimed that those saying no to the creation of Biafra and Oduduwa, are “making war inevitable”.

He stated this in response to Senator Shehu Sani’s remarks, that the people behind the Biafran agitation “are a new generation of young men and women, who have not experienced war and have not suffered from the war and have not seen the consequences of wars.”

Dino Melaye allegedly caught on tape, revealing how he framed suspects in assassination attempt

Fani-Kayode however insists that the two entities must be separated from Nigeria or there will be war.

He wrote on his Twitter page on Tuesday:”Those agitating for BIAFRA have not seen WAR” – Sen. Sheu Sani.

“Those that are saying no to BIAFRA and ODUDUWA are making WAR inevitable.”

Politics / Why Bayelsa, Rivers, Other Non-igbo States Complied With Sit-at-home Order–IPOB by ukomko: 6:51pm On Jun 04, 2017
The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has said that the observance of the sit-at-home declaration in parts of Bayelsa, Rivers and some places has shown that Biafra has been widely accepted even outside the Southeast region.

Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Emma Powerful, declared this while speaking on the outcome of the sit-at-home protest.

“This sit-at-home order for Biafra restoration and remembrance of our fallen heroes and heroines is not an Igbo affair only. Our leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, issued the sit-at-home order, which was obeyed everywhere, when he was in prison.

“He never said we should honour and remember those that died in Igboland only. He ordered that Biafrans and IPOB members worldwide must honour and remember those who died and paid the ultimate price during the genocidal war against the people of Biafra from 1967 to 1970, bearing in mind that not only Ndigbo make up Biafra nation. What happened during the sit-at-home order on 30th May 2017 will show you that Biafra is not only for Igbo.

“We give glory to Almighty God (Chukwu Okike Abiama), who made it possible for our people to live up to our expectations”, he told Sun.

“IPOB is an ordained movement that heaven wants to use to liberate the oppressed people in Biafra, the God Almighty who raised our leader Mazi Nnamdi Kanu will finish it. Again, we achieved 100 per cent compliance because IPOB always stands on the truth.

“You may think that people are not seeing what you do but when you call for action then you know whether you are on the right track. People have seen the truth in IPOB; that is the secret.

“IPOB is a worldwide freedom fighting movement that has leadership that directs the affairs of the group. We don’t just open our mouth and talk like market women.

“When we want to take up any new action we must announce it to the world and people will understand what we are about to do and which we must do and follow it up to the logical conclusion.”

Politics / Why I Flouted Some Of My Bail Conditions – Nnamdi Kanu by ukomko: 10:40am On Jun 04, 2017
Biafra leader Nnamdi Kanu has explained why he went against some bail conditions.
Kanu speaking through his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor said it was not for the prosecution to determine whether or not his client had violated the bail conditions.
Ejiofor said it was the exclusive responsibility of the court to decide whether or not the bail conditions had been violated. He, however, added that some of the conditions the defendant was being touted to have violated were unconstitutional.
He promised to file an application to set aside the “unconstitutional” bail conditions.
Ejiofor said, “It doesn’t lie in their power to determine whether he has breached the bail conditions or not.
“The court gave the bail on supplementary and other main terms. The court knows the terms on which it granted the bail.
“I have been able to clarify this issue – the fact that the court said he cannot be found in the crowd of more than 10 persons does not mean he cannot go to church; it does not mean he cannot entertain visitors in his house.
“It is on that note that we are going to file an application to vacate those terms.
“I can tell you that the court is fully aware that he would attend church and he would receive family members.
“These are his rights under the fundamental human rights in Chapter 4 of the Constitution.”
Reacting to allegations of his client granting press interviews in breach of his bail conditions, Ejiofor said, “Freedom of expression is part of the rights he (Kanu) is entitled to under the Constitution.
“We are filing an application before the court to set aside the terms that are clearly in violation of the Constitution.”

Politics / Profiling Nnamdi Kanu... Son Of The Rising Sun - The Sun by ukomko: 10:10am On Jun 03, 2017
“Live the life of your dreams. Be brave enough to live the life of your dreams according to your vision and purpose instead of the expectations and opinion of others. Don’t let others tell you what you can’t do. Don’t let the limitations of others limit your vision. If you can remove your self-doubt and believe in yourself, you can achieve what you never thought possible.”

Enter Nnamdi Kenny Okwu Kanu, the new kid on the block. The above quote by a great thinker, Roy T. Benett captures the power of vision and self-belief, which the British-Nigerian political activist now represents. He is a man of the moment and hate or love him, his name has got stuck in the minds of the majority of Nigerians. And perhaps no name in the country today rings a bell like that of the prisoner of conscience.

Surprisingly, before now, Kanu who doubles as the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and director of a London-based radio station, Radio Biafra was literally unknown in Nigeria. But out of the blues, the Abia State born activist became a household name when on October 14, 2015, he was arrested by the agents of the Federal Government, the Department of State Security (DSS) in his hotel room, Golden Tulip Essential Hotel, Ikeja, Lagos State on treason charges. He was thereafter detained in jail. His arrest and detention marked the beginning of the making of today’s Igbo hero. Many would agree that since his arrest on that fateful day, the popularity of the young man with a heart of steel has soared like an eagle.

The man Nnamdi

Kanu was born in Isiama Afara, Abia State, Nigeria. His father is Eze Israel Okwu Kanu and his mother Ugoeze Nnenne Kanu. He attended Library Avenue Primary School (now part of Government House, Umuahia) and went to Government College Umuahia for his secondary education. The freedom fighter later gained admission to the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN), where he could not finish due to incessant strikes before he left for London to complete his tertiary education. By 1987, Nnamdi was merely an innocent Geography major, resident at Akintola Hall of the UNN. Not given to half measures and as one of those gifted in the pursuit of their dreams, Nnamdi’s path would prove to be thorny, uncommon and epochal. It is little wonder that he did not have the patience to tarry along with other normal students before going abroad for his studies.

While in London, Kanu became an activist and freedom fighter with the sole aim of liberating the people of Biafra who he believes are being oppressed in Nigeria. One of the greatest instruments he deployed to achieve that dream was the Radio Biafra with which he continuously lampooned the Federal Government. A man of his conviction, he took his activities to the extreme and did not pretend that he could even pay the supreme price for the liberation of his people. The IPOB leader was once quoted to have said he is an Igbo Jew, part of a group who believe they are descendants of the lost tribe of Israel who settled in West Africa.

Speaking ahead of the 50th anniversary of Biafran war to Al-Jazeera despite being banned by the court not to grant interviews, Kanu had made it clear that the demand for the secession of Ndigbo from Nigeria is because the nation seems not to be functioning and can never function.

He decried the marginalisation of the Igbo in Nigeria, saying that they have been prevented from aspiring to assume important positions in the country. Kanu like in the words of Philip Brooks, believes that, “no man has come to true greatness who has not felt that his life belongs to his race, and that which God gives to him, He gives him for mankind”.

Hero or villain

For Kanu, many believe that heroism was thrust on him by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration following his arrest, detention and eventual release on bail. The news of the arrest of Mr Kanu generated protests across parts of Delta, Enugu, Rivers, Cross River, Abia, Imo, and Anambra states.

The argument is that the activist has been operating long before the All Progressives Congress (APC) government came on board and many Nigerians hardly knew that any name like Nnamdi Kanu ever existed. The permutation is that the strategy adopted by the government through the Department of State Security (DSS) magnified IPOB, which Kanu leads and shot his popularity up to high heavens. His popularity rating was boosted when he was denied bail after orders to do so by several courts of competent jurisdiction. Kanu was arraigned by the DSS on November 23, 2015 in an Abuja Magistrate Court for the first time for charges of “criminal conspiracy, intimidation and membership of an illegal organisation.” The charges, they said violated “Section 97, 97B and 397” of Nigeria’s penal code.

On the date of the case, Kanu’s supporters stormed Abuja in luxury buses on a peaceful protest for their leader who was arraigned before the Wuse Zone 2 Magistrate Court with placards amid dancing and singing outside the court premises whilst hearing proceeded. Protesters wore T-shirts and caps with inscriptions like “Biafra Now or Never”, “Buhari Release Kanu For Us”, “On Biafra We Stand”.

The government ignored initial court orders calling for Kanu’s bail before bowing to the recent one, which eventually led to his release on bail, on April, 28, 2017. But the bail conditions were harsh as the IPOB leader was banned from public speaking, granting press interviews or being in a group of more than 10 people.

As a condition of that bail, Kanu was also asked to bring a prominent Igbo leader, a wealthy resident of Abuja and a senior Nigerian Jewish leader to provide N100m ($260,000; £200,000) each as surety to the court. So, from the government’s perspective, Kanu is an enemy of the state whose activities should be nipped in the bud. But for very many others, he is a hero and a prisoner of conscience.

While he was in prison, many prominent Nigerians including Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state, former governor of Abia State and eminent businessman, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, former governor, Central Bank of Nigeria, Prof Charles Soludo among others visited him and further made him a celebrity even while in detention.

Cult figure among Ndigbo

Among Ndigbo worldwide, particularly in the South East zone, Kanu has become a small god. In the social media, pictures of those who are short of worshipping him like a deity have often appeared in some platforms. His Abia State home has become a Mecca of some sorts. Going by the figures from Amnesty International, more than 150 Igbo youths were martyred in the struggle for his release.

Many still wonder why the leader of IPOB has overshadowed his counterpart and founder of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra(MASSOB), Chief Ralph Uwazuruike. Not a few believe that the average Igbo youth sees Kanu as the new face of the Biafran struggle unlike Uwazuruike who had been around over the years with allegations of having compromised the spirit of the fight for liberation. The youth in the South East see him as the true son of Biafra having remained unbowed despite the intimidation and harassment in the hands of the state.

Kanu is worshipped and deified because in the eyes of many, he did what many Igbo leaders were either too afraid to do or unwilling to do because of their selfish interests. He dared to be different and spoke out against the powers that be whose project appears to have been to always put the Igbo at a disadvantage in the nation’s scheme of things. Many believe that Kanu has successfully taken up the gauntlet and waged a mind war against the establishment, hence his popularity among the Igbo masses.

Sit-At-Home Order

On Tuesday, May 30 , the entire South East was shut down following the sit-at-home order by the Kanu’s IPOB, to mark the 50th anniversary of the declaration of the defunct Republic of Biafra and to honour heroes and heroines of the struggle. Apart from the East, the directive was partly complied with in Port Harcourt, Asaba and Bayelsa but ignored in Uyo.

Most markets, banks and schools in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu and Imo states, including those in the rural areas, were closed and the roads were totally deserted in the early hours of the morning. In Enugu, the order was also largely complied with as schools, banks, markets and other commercial activities were paralysed, with police helicopters hovering around the state capital. The shutdown of the states was in spite of the plea by South-East governors and massive police and security presence, who patrolled streets and carried out air surveillance with helicopters to ensure that there was no breakdown of law and order.

Following the success of the sit-at-home directive, IPOB congratulated Ndigbo worldwide for showing total compliance with the order. IPOB, in a statement by its Media and Publicity Secretary, Mr Emma Powerful, said the compliance with the directive was an indication that Ndigbo all over the world were tired of the Nigerian federation and ready to leave the country. His words: “Our Supreme Leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu issued this order of sit-at-home when he was still in Kuje Prisons, Abuja and it has come to pass. All the people of Biafra both at home and abroad complied in totality without any compulsion, which has not happened in the history of the Biafran struggle.”

Politics / Let Igbos Break Out Of Nigeria, They Are Now More Sophisticated – Gani Adams by ukomko: 9:25am On Jun 03, 2017
National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, OPC, Otunba Gani Adams has declared that Yorubas are solidly behind the Igbo people in the struggle for their own country called Biafra.

Gani, while fielding questions from the Sun, said he would be that last person to go against the agitation of pro-Biafra groups, adding that it is their right.

The OPC national Cordinator noted that the Igbos are now more sophisticated than in 1967-1970, calling on Nigeria to let them go.

According to him, “I would be the last person that would ask the Igbo people to stop the agitation for the Republic of Biafra. It is their right for self-determination.

“Look at the population of the Igbo people now and they are the most vibrant and widely travelled Nigerians.

‘When people are saying that they would crush the Igbo people the way they crushed them in 1967, I always laugh at them.

“The people you have now are not the Igbo of 1967 to 1970.

“We have a new Igbo society that is more organized and sophisticated.

“I was one of those that supported the release of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra(IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu.

“The crackdown on IPOB would not help matters because if they are determined for liberation, you cannot stop them no matter the force you use against them.

“So, I believe that the only way to resolves all these agitations is to go back to the Republican Constitution of 1963.”

The Indigenous People of Biafra on Tuesday appraised the level of compliance with its sit-at-home order and described it as a huge success.
A statement made available to one of our correspondents in Awka, the Anambra State capital, by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, said apart from Nigeria, the order was observed in no fewer than 75 countries.

Powerful gave the names of the countries where the order was complied with as Taiwan, Chad, Switzerland, United Kingdom, USA, Russia, Ukraine, Angola, Congo DRC, Mozambique, Luxembourg, Brazil, Jamaica, Dominican Republic, St. Kitts, Canada, Italy, Norway, Denmark, Spain, Sweden, France.
Others were Germany, Austria, Finland, South Africa, Togo, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Liberia, Benin Republic, Gabon, Cape Verde, Madagascar, Mexico, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Portugal, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Ukraine, Namibia, Equatorial Guinea, UAE, Kuwait, Qatar, Scotland, Holland, Belgium, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Greece, Pakistan, India, Trinidad and Tobago, Israel, Italy, Argentina, Burkina Faso, Tanzania, Sao Tome and Principe, Australia, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, Namibia, Niger Republic, Tunisia, Algeria and Cape Verde.
He thanked those who made the exercise a success, especially members of the IPOB family.
He described those who did not participate in the exercise as saboteurs, alleging that they were paid by the Federal Government to sabotage the order.
His statement read in part, “The Indigenous People of Biafra and its leadership worldwide congratulate Biafrans and all the IPOB family members worldwide both in Biafra land and in the Diaspora for their compliance with the sit-at-home order issued by our indefatigable leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
“Mazi Nnamdi Kanu issued this sit-at-home order when he was still in Kuje Prison, Abuja, and it has come to pass; all the people of Biafra both home and abroad complied in all totality. This had not been done in the history of Biafra struggle before.
“We also blame those saboteurs who were paid by the government to sabotage the restoration project because today Biafrans and IPOB members worldwide obeyed Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. We, IPOB, must be strong and we promise everybody that Biafra is here.”
But our correspondent observed that the exercise recorded partial success in Anambra State.
The Hausa market located in Dike Park at the heart of Awka, the state capital, was closed even as banks, schools and other major markets were closed.
Despite the order, a few commercial vehicles operated along the Old Awka-Onitsha Road.
Vehicular movement was paralysed in major cities of Onitsha, Nnewi, Awka and Ekwulobia.
The Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Mr Sam Okaula, said in a telephone chat that the exercise was peaceful.
Enugu: MASSOB rates sit-at-home protest huge success
The Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra has declared Tuesday’s sit-at-home protest as a ‘huge success’.
MASSOB claimed that the success of the exercise was an indication that, should a referendum be conducted in Biafra areas, the people would vote to secede from Nigeria.
“The huge success achieved in today’s sit-at-home exercise is marvelous and glorious because the Almighty God approved our programme for the commemoration of the golden jubilee of the declaration of Biafra by ‘General’ Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu.
“The huge success is evident that the coming Biafra referendum shall be a walkover against the Nigerian state,” MASSOB leader, Uchnna Madu, said in a statement, on Tuesday.
He dedicated the huge success to schoolchildren, commercial bus drivers, motorcyclists, tricycle drivers and corporate firms that complied with the sit-at-home exercise.
Ebonyi records partial compliance
In Ebonyi, the sit-at-home order to honour Biafra’s fallen heroes, who died during the Civil War between 1967 and 1970, was partially complied with by residents of Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, and other neighboring towns in the State.

One of our correspondents reported that economic and commercial activities, including vehicular movements were witnessed in the state during the exercise.
As early as 4am, the state capital witnessed a heavy presence of armed security operatives, who patrolled the town with vehicles. Helicopters were also used for surveillance.
As the day broke, economic activities gradually gathered momentum with residents trooping out of their houses for their places of work.
Shops, which were initially locked, opened up for commercial activities in the capital.
Two popular markets in the city, Abakpa Market and Kpirikpiri Market, opened for commercial activities.
Also, a visit to some schools in Abakaliki showed that academic activities were ongoing while motor parks were opened for commercial activities.
A bank customer, who preferred anonymity, told one of our correspondents that he was glad that the banks opened for transactions, stating that anything otherwise would have brought hardship on the people.
