How Did The Nickzom Empire Begin?
My name is Idoko Nicholas Chinazom. I am the CEO and founder of The Nickzom Empire. I have a sister who always wanted me to explain to her how a calculation was solved every single time since I was always at home as a result of the 2013 ASUU strike. It was really frustrating since she really meets me at odd times such as when I am playing a video game, watching a movie or chatting with someone special. She always complained that the textbook would select easy examples to solve and leave the hard ones in the problems for her to solve.
I was learning web development at the time since I had already taught myself Java. My instructor, Kingsley was always saying that the development of applications is there to make our lives easy and make money for yourself. So I decided to write a computer program in HTML and JavaScript that would be able to solve any surd operation and show the steps accurately with clear explanations for easy understanding without me being present to show her how it was done.
I was amazed with how much spare time I had because when I was done with the program and I showed it to her for her to use, she was so excited. She used it to solve all the surd operation problems she had with just a click of a button and was able to understand the steps that lead to the answer.
It was really amazing. It got to a point that I got jealous of my computer because she never disturbed me again about how surd was solved. She had all the steps and answers in my computer, amazing right? I even started asking her if there is any problem and she would tell me NO, the computer has taught her how to do it or the computer showed her where she made a mistake or the computer showed her what to do to arrive at the answer.
I was really glad. I had so much time to do my thing and I also observed her and I noticed that she would tear out a sheet of paper solve a surd operation, write the steps and then compare it to the steps being displayed by my computer till the final answer. It really gave me inner peace and joy just like Kung Fu Panda.

What Happened Next?
I showed it to my other siblings, they loved it and I started to make my computer a calculation machine. I then started writing programs to solve other calculation problems apart from surd and show the steps accurately for any of them to understand easily without anybody present to guide them on it. By 30 November, 2013 I was able to write programs to solve over 15 mathematical calculation problems and show the steps in Java as a Desktop App. At this point it was just a rugged desktop application since it was for family, I never bothered about the design and I am not good at design anyway.
On December 1, 2013 I showed the application to my buddy, Bright. He was so excited that he started telling me how many billions I can make from it, lol. He suggested that I create a single web page with a download button and host the desktop app online for people to download. In my mind, I was like who will even download an app that solves mathematical calculations, people hate simple calculators to even start with but I decided to just do it.
On December 2, 2013 I launched Nickzom online and only few of my friends downloaded it. I was not disappointed because I expected it at that time. I also got a lot of positive feedbacks and I felt somewhat special.
After the strike was called off. I went back to school and I showed it to my class mates who liked the desktop app and also gave me suggestions on the calculations they want Nickzom to be able to solve for them which I did gladly. I was just happy that other people using the app was happy using it.

How Did The Android Mobile and Web Version Come About?
After the strike I was to be a 3rd year Electrical/Electronic Engineering student and my buddy, Bright was to be a 2nd year Civil Engineering student at FUTO.
On a very faithful day, my buddy, Bright came to me and said “Hey Nick! You see if someone wants to use this application in the exam hall to do malpractice, the person can’t because he/she would have to carry a laptop or desktop to the exam hall which is not possible. In fact, how many people even have laptops? But a lot of people have smart phones. I should make Nickzom to be a web application – hosted online and then if anybody wants the desktop version. He or she can easily download it on the site too.” I then decided to do the web version. In a few weeks, it was done and people started using it. I started to even have users from India which was mind blowing to me at the time. When I was done with the web. I was strolling back to the lodge on a very sunny day with my brothers (not related by blood), Nnamdi and Joel. They asked me a question “What if I do not have data on my phone, does it mean I cannot use the app?” I said “Hell Ya! “ They pointed out to me that it should not be like that and at the time I did not know anyone that wrote android computer programs. I downloaded a lot of e-books online on android and I was able to successfully able to develop about 6 various android apps that solves calculations and show the steps which I deleted last year and combined all into one – Calculator | Nickzom.

What Is The Nickzom Empire?
