SavageResponse:
I would choose $10,000 over N7,000,000 in this scenario even if you ask me 1,000 times.

Reasons
US$ is a far better store of value especially if the funds will be fixed for such a long time

The possibility of exchange rate falling to 1$ to N1,000 within the next 3 years is a reality. Why do you think there has suddenly being a spike in prices in Nigeria?

Crude oil which is our main forex earner has dropped therefore manufactures are having a difficult time accessing forex with which to pay for imports of essential raw materials and machinery
You have a very interesting point here.

I have a question for you.
You are to only pick one.

If you are given $10,000 or NGN 7,000,000 to be fixed with no interest for a duration of 3 years. This means you cannot access any of the funds till October 01, 2023. Which would you pick?

WebmastersNicholas Idoko: My Experience As A Freelance Software Developer | Part 2 by ultimatex(op): 9:51am On Jun 24, 2020
I would like to use this medium to appreciate all of you. Most especially those who indicated an interest in me to further share my experience as a Freelance Software Developer. I decided to share my experience here as a way to add a little spice to the Webmaster section of Nairaland.

It is definitely an honor for me to share further.
In case, you have not read Part 1.
Here is the URL: https://www.nairaland.com/5938926/nicholas-idoko-experience-freelance-software

My experience continues thus:

As I sat down in Kingsley's room I, in fact, felt very lucky because Kingsley did not shy away from sharing with me how much money he has made from developing websites for various people. It became clear to me that I was completely wasting my time watching movies day in day out. On a side note, I believe I am blessed, in the sense that it is easier for me to understand lessons so I didn't do much reading in school. I simply watched a lot of movies and managed to excel. cool

After a long conversation with Kingsley, I decided to learn Java. Looking back now, I would have been shouting ABORT MISSION, ABORT MISSION shocked shocked The reason for this would later come down in a later part of my experience.

I asked Kingsley if he could teach me how to program and he said time is the problem. I could remember his exact words. He said: "Nick, you know say I like woman and I no want make people think say I be nerd for this lodge. I would not have the time to teach you but I can guide you if you have any questions. In the meantime, start learning Java."

I took it upon myself to learn Java. The next day, I rushed to Douglas Market in Owerri in search of a book on how to learn Java programming. Prior to that, I saw a lot of ebooks. I just didn't feel comfortable learning with an e-book. Also, remember we were having power issues. I went around the market and to my surprise, I could not find any book on how to code Java. I felt a bit disappointed. cry

I went back to the lodge, packed my bags, and traveled home that same day. Home is Enugu State, coal city state, 042.

I had a mission for the ASUU strike of 2013. I MUST LEARN HOW TO CODE cool

I got home and in the early hours of the morning, I rushed to Ogbete Main Market. I asked around for bookshops and I remember a guy walked me all the way from the gate of the market to the exact shop where so many books on programming were stocked. I was wowed, shocked shocked shocked In my head, I thought, it seems a lot of people have started learning to program here in Enugu. That there were this many books on Programming.

I requested a book on Java and the salesperson had like 10 various books. I decided to buy 'Introduction to Java Programming' by Y. Daniel Liang. The funny thing is I cannot even remember how much I bought that book and I can confidently say that that book was the foundation of me being a software developer to this day. If you have seen this book, you would know that the book is huge. It is like one of those Anatomy books medical students carry around. I was fearless and I was confident that I would tear this book apart.

I got home, I flipped through the book and all I could recognize was the first chapter of the book since that was all we did in school. The rest where jibberish. I remember when I flipped to Java Server Pages and Database and my head felt shooked. I started reading and practicing. It was fun sometimes and sometimes, it was utter hell. I remember the first time I made a mistake of not adding a semicolon. It drove me crazy, literally. I looked at the code snippet front and back and I could not see that there was no semicolon at the end of one my statement.

I could not sleep throughout that night, I slept for a while, woke up and looked at it, still nothing. At a point, I saw myself shouting at the laptop. sad, I would shout and I would beg the laptop to please run the code successfully. It was at this instance, that it occurred to me that a computer is thoroughly an idiot machine, GARBAGE IN GARBAGE OUT. One thing with me is I make sure I solve all the exercises in the book no matter how many they are and I can't just move to the next chapter without having to do that. I was so frustrated.

The way, I solved that problem was funny to me. Now, because I have looked at the code so much the picture of the code was embedded in my brain so deep that I could literally see the lines of code no matter what I am doing. One evening, a friend of mine, Tiger, his real name is Bright but we all call him Tiger or El Tigre. He came to my house with PlayStation for us to play Soccer. It was while playing the game and mind you he was beating me mercilessly in the soccer match that I discovered that I had missed a semicolon in the second line of the statement. I ran to my laptop, corrected it and the code ran successfully. It was at that moment, I PAID MY DUES AND RESPECT TO SEMICOLON cheesy grin.

I kept on practicing and moving forward to the next chapters. I was already an introvert but coding made matters worse. It was as if my level of "introvertness" was multiplied exponentially. All I did and wanted to do was code from morning till night. It got to the point that my parents became worried. My mom kept on complaining that I was spending so much time on the computer and I should be reading my books in case they call off the ASUU strike. My dad was complaining that I do not have time to do chores in the house again and I have neglected washing his car, clothes, and some other stuff, I did without bothering before.

I would not lie, I understood where they were coming from, I normally did all those things but as I dived deep into coding I gradually neglected everything and focused on just CODE. SLEEP. EAT. REPEAT. My life just became a cycle.

At that time, I have never been in LOVE but I started to understand what my friends do say about how being in LOVE can make your priorities singular and your mind distorted. I was IN LOVE with CODING.

The complaints from my parents started to increase and I started to bounce grin. I would wake up very early in the morning, clean up and go to the library, spend the whole day there till night. I would be back exhausted and sleep off wink I found an escape route. There was this small library in Enugu called Opus Dei, opposite UNEC. It was amazing, they had Air Conditioning, 24 hours electricity and it was very quiet. It is owned by a group of catholic priests and it is simply amazing.

I remember the first time, I left home to the library. My parents were dumbfounded. It was after a week of me doing that that they knew how serious programming was to me. They stopped complaining for a while. I enjoyed my stay in the library I kept on going there even on Saturdays and Sundays.

After the semicolon incident, I was coding smoothly until I met another HELLFIRE!! This next hell was even worse than the hell from the semicolon. It was RECURSION. I was done with iterations: while, for loops and all that good stuff. I was now in a chapter called Methods. I understood how the methods work and how it can help prevent re-inventing the wheel. I was playing around with it and all was good and dandy. All of a sudden, I decided to do an exercise that needed recursion. In case you do not know what recursion is. In layman terms: recursion is the art of looping a method within itself. You simply say it is a method or function's form of iteration. If you have an easier way of defining it. You can share it with us as well.

Now, the problem, every time I run the code my laptop hung. As a newbie, I actually did not know why it was happening that way. I started checking the code and I could not see why it was happening that way. Mehn, I was frustrated again, My soul was BOILING. I kept on asking what is the meaning of all this. I noticed something though. In the console, the loop ran till infinity. It was at this moment, I had my first experience with INFINITY LOOPS. huh huh

Phew, that stuff can be annoying. I dug deeper into the code to see where the problem was, I could not find it. After about 36 hours, I tried to contact Kingsley to see if he could help me but I was not able to reach him. I later found at that he was in South Africa at the time. I was ALL ALONE until I met a very amazing friend. A friend almost all programmers have benefited from her good graces. I hereby welcome you all to our dear friend, STACK OVERFLOW.

I was asking various questions on google trying to find out why the code was not running properly. Google referred me to Stack Overflow and it was magnificent. It was the community, I so needed at the time. People were happy to help debug with you on your code issues. Fortunately for me, someone else had the exact problem as I and another person had answered his question. I saw what they did, then checked back at my code and saw my mistake. The mistake was SO STUPID, I started laughing out loud in the library and everyone turned and start looking at me. I immediately started saying sorry, sorry while smiling sheepishly. cheesy

I kept moving forward, for some reason, Arrays were actually easy for me to understand. I slid through that chapter and exercises like I was the King of Coding. It was later in my journey, I met other programmers who told me they still do not understand Arrays and Maps fully. I may be lucky there WHO KNOWS. I enjoyed the Array chapter. I did some amazing exercises and I even helped quite a few people to solve their Array issues on Stack Overflow and got the GREEN TICK for correct answer cool

I kept on moving majestically learning how to code. I started feeling PROUD and UNSTOPPABLE. At some point, I saw myself as the UNDERTAKER. I wrote codes and it ran without much debugging. I never knew my FALL OFF was very close at hand. Brothers and Sisters, OBJECTS AND CLASSES broke me to pieces.

I would pause sharing my experience here. It seems like I have written much already. If you were able to read all these up to this point Kudos to you. I would very much like to view your experiences as well. If you would like me to continue sharing, kindly indicate. Stay Safe, People

WebmastersNicholas Idoko: My Experience As A Freelance Software Developer | Part 1 by ultimatex(op): 11:19am On Jun 20, 2020
My name is Nicholas Idoko.

I have been writing codes since 2013 and It has not been a smooth journey, there are a lot of ups and downs and I have learned a lot in the process. I am still learning every day for I am still in the process to this day. cheesy

The webmaster section of Nairaland used to be so much fun during my early days of programming but now it seems to have turned to a serious marketplace for various services. I obviously do not have a problem with it in any way but I would like to mix things up a bit by sharing my experiences. I would reminisce a little and we can share knowledge and learn the best way to move forward in whatever we do.

If you are interested in my experience, I am sorry if you do not have the patience for it is a very long one and I can only cover it in parts.

With all respect, I am to do you the honor of starting from the very beginning of how it all started, bear with me.

My programming journey started in school. I schooled at Federal University of Technology, Owerri. I was studying Electrical/Electronics Engineering. (I should have done Mathematics or Computer Science huh).

In my year two, we were introduced to Java and C++, I do not know if this applies to other schools but we were not taught much, just simple introductions about how to use system.out or include libraries in C++. Who invented Java and C++, theory stuff, I have likely forgotten now. I liked the idea of writing command and the computer does it for you. It was fun during practicals, everybody came out and we took turns writing simple commands in the school computer room. I enjoyed it but what we were taught was basically nothing in the grand scheme of things.

Funny enough, all those things did not spark my interest in programming. I just knew what it did and I focused on making sure I understood other subjects since the goal was to graduate with First Class wink. I was so naive. It's cool though because, after 3 weeks from my last practicals in the computer room, everything changed.

In the mid-year of 2013, ASUU decided to go on strike. We were about to write exams the following week. Deep down, I was happy and filled with Joy grin grin

My friend, Nnamdi introduced me to Game of Thrones and another friend introduced me to Suits. Mehn, I had so many movies to watch and boy, did I watch those movies, NO EXAMS, GO HOME, ASUU IS ON STRIKE. One evening, I was browsing through Nairaland and someone posted 10 richest men in the world. I started researching all these men and it dawned on me that half of them got their money from software huh huh

The thought was deeply stuck in my mind. The time, I was spending watching those movies started to soar because I started to fill like I was wasting my time. I wouldn't lie I kept on watching the movies like I didn't care at all. undecided Students have started to gradually travel back home as a result of the strike. I was in no rush so I just stayed back but there was a little problem. NEPA cut the light of my lodge in school, I started to buy fuel for my generator to watch movies on my laptop. One morning on my way to buy fuel, I had the opportunity to chat with my neighbor for he was going to buy fuel as well.

We started chatting but before, I continue I have to tell you a few things about my neighbor. He is name is Kingsley and he was the biggest boy in the lodge. He had everything and more than a student needs in his room. He had a big plasma TV, fridge, water dispenser, AC, and a Car.

Prior, to that chat, we had never really talked to each other just greetings here and there, Women were dying to be with him. He was in the final year at the time. I actually misjudged him because I taught his parents had money but that was very far from the case. He went for parties left, right and center. Everybody knew him and he was like the King of the hostel. I remember there was a day, a girl came to his room and refused to go back to the hostel because she felt so comfortable grin. Simply put, in my eyes he had money.

As we were chatting about irrelevant things, I can't even remember today, I asked him what is he up to today and he said he is wrapping up a website for a company in Senegal and he would be paid today. I then asked him how much are they paying he said $850. At that time, $1 was NGN 160. I was shocked, back then that was big money for a student in year two. It was approx. NGN 136,000. He then told me the website took him 3 months to develop and the total fee he charged was $1750.

It was at that moment, my interest in software development hit hard cool

I followed him to his room to see the website and it was cool, he showed me his codes and it all looked gibberish in my eyes but I was fascinated. I started to feel like I have been wasting my time all this while. I could have been using this time to make some cool cash. That incident really fired me up. He told me he was using JSP (Java Server Pages) to develop the website and for me to begin, I have to, first of all, learn Java.

You know how when you have your entire life planned out and in a single second you just see all your plans dismantled into nothingness. It was at the moment, I realized I had no plan. I always taught like this. I would finish B.eng in Electrical/Electronic Engineering with first-class honors, do my masters, Ph.D. and work in an oil company grin grin grin. I still laugh to this day thinking about it.

I spoke with Kingsley for the entire day and things started changing.

I would have to pause this story here for now. If you would like me to share more simply indicate and I would share further. I would also like to know your experiences as well. You can share here or create a thread telling us how you picked interest in software development. I would like the webmaster section to be mixed up a bit like how it was in the old days.

Thank you!

Good day everyone

I've been a guest for a couple of years now, created an account to seek advice

My dear nairalanders, does it always end well marrying the Breadwinner of a family? He's the last born with 4 elder siblings but they all depend on him.

Yes, I knew he was the Breadwinner from day one but I thought with time, everyone else will be able to stand on their own, but it hasn't happened yet, we've dated for 3yrs now and he doesn't support me financially. I don't complain but he feels entitled to my money and when I get tired of him always asking me to lend him some money and decide to say no, he nags and tells me I'm not being supportive enough.

This is driving me really crazy cause he reminded me of how unsupportive I've been to him and his family, he's driving me insane, you can't possibly put the responsibility of your family on my shoulders, that's crazy and insensitive, over the years, I've borrowed him nothing less than 500k which I know for sure he's never giving back.

Is it normal to be in a parasitic relationship whereby the female remains the host that's being fed on?

I'm only 24 while he's 31.

EducationThe Importance And Value Of Calculators In Schools by ultimatex(op): 8:47am On Jan 05, 2019
https://www.nickzom.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/ec1.jpg

With constant advancement in technology there is no doubt, the need to keep up with the dynamics as well as involving technology in every intrinsic part of society. Not doing so can leave a community or nation at large at the mercy of the developed worlds. The simple calculator finds its invention nearly fifty years ago, growing from the simple Abacus, to the basic digital calculator that can perform simple four-function operations (addition, division, multiplication and subtraction) to the more sophisticated machine capable of executing highly technical algebraic symbolic manipulations at high accuracy and speed. The calculator comes in various types, models, sizes and design to fit various budget and user’s preference, very portable and has found its way into various institution including schools.

But what does this mean for learning institutions?

https://www.nickzom.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/ec2.jpg

There is this controversial belief that calculators introduced in schools is somewhat detrimental to the student’s academic health. Some math teachers claimed it makes student lazy and lack number fluency and curiosity about the working principles of numbers. But this is only true when calculators are introduced in the elementary stage of education, where proper foundation of math principles, simple arithmetic calculations are required. In fact, calculators play major roles in school settings.

Mathematics students and mathematics dependent courses like Engineering, Accounting etc. use math as a tool in various ways, in solving complex problems, requiring large data and statistics which would be too cumbersome to tackle, will take so much time and various sequential steps that require high level of carefulness. The calculator not only motivates them to tackle complex problems, but also, saves them tangible time at high accuracy. It also helps students to appreciate the usefulness of technology.

During examinations, where the student’s knowledge is tested on a specific subject, with technical questions, the calculator lends a helping hand in providing diverse methods or approach in dealing with them. Research, being a tool in data acquisition, either in form of statistical tables, or graphs, there exist a range of calculators like the graphical calculator and printer calculator that can easily give you feedback on site or field, making research and field work less strenuous, frustrating and saves you time before your deadline for certain school projects. Other forms of calculators exist, like the GP calculator which helps the students and school management keep track of students performance. The calculator can be portable, it can be easily carried anywhere, so whether it’s to check daily expenses to stay in budget, to determine facts in an argument between friends, designing or modeling a piece of invention, a calculator is an essential in learning institutions. Nickzom Calculator is one of the best calculators.

We are looking for reviews and comments on how we can make this app serve everyone better and become one of the greatest brands from Nigeria.

No matter how tough the nation is there are still people like us trying to push the nation forward in anyway that we can and make it a great nation and an exemplary technological base for Africa.

In our case, we have identified a problem which is that a lot of students find it very difficult to follow the steps of calculations in class by the lecturer or tutor. Therefore, we are doing our very best in solving this problem by developing an encyclopedia for calculations that would be able to not only show students and professionals the answer but also the workings as well.
