The Senate has passed a bill seeking to amend the Terrorism (Prevention) Act, 2013, and to prohibit the payment of ransom to kidnappers in Nigeria.
The passage of the Terrorism (Prevention) Act 2013 (Amendment) Bill, 2022, followed the consideration of a report by the Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters.
The report was laid by the committee chairman, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele (APC, Ekiti Central), before consideration.
Mr Bamidele, in his presentation, said the bill seeks to outlaw the payment of ransom to abductors, kidnappers and terrorist for release of any person who has been wrongfully confined, imprisoned or kidnapped.
According to the lawmaker, “the overall import of this bill is to discourage the rising spate of kidnapping and abduction for ransom In Nigeria, which is fast spreading across the country.”

When conclude, the deal which is coming as a support for small and medium sized enterprises in Nigeria, is expected to generate over $300 million in foreign direct investment (FDI) for Nigeria and directly create 5,000 jobs.
The deal was sealed by both the Governments of the United Kingdom and its Nigerian counterpart at the Economic and Development Forum (EDF) held today in London to promote trade as a force for good and boost a partnership worth over £3 billion.
At the Forum, both countries marked increased support for small and medium sized enterprises in Nigeria, including the UK Manufacturing Africa programme, which has helped 12 firms in Nigeria secure foreign investment.
Both parties agreed to start discussions on an Enhanced Trade Partnership (ETP) to strengthen trade and high value investment across both countries.
Part of the agreement is to set up an official working level group to explore the benefits of an ETP in priority sectors.
DIT officials said they expect the increased ambition to build on long standing economic ties between the UK and Nigeria which is already worth £3.2 billion in 2021.

Whiteangel1234: The Anambra State Police have rescued herders which were said to have been kidnapped in the Ogbaru Local Government Area of the state.
The Police Command also said it recovered about 300 cattle, which were allegedly rustled by gunmen.
The South-East Chairman of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, Alhaji Gidado Siddiki, had alleged that gunmen invaded its settlement on Saturday and kidnapped 10 of its members and went away with about 300 cows belonging to the herders.
He said the kidnappers were asking for N10m and a gun as ransom.
However, the state police command’s spokesperson, DSP Toochukwu Ikenga, in an update on the attack, on Monday, said only one herder was still with the kidnappers, while efforts were being intensified to rescue him.
Ikenga stated this in a press statement titled, “Update on the alleged gunmen attack on herders in Anambra State, kidnap of 10 and rustling of 300 cows.”
He said, “In view of the above, the Police Command got into joint operation with the military.
On 24/4/2022 some of the alleged victims of abduction were seen in the bush unharmed, while one of the abductees is still missing. The joint operatives also discovered some of the livestock in the bush.

So far, their victims include the Honourable the Attorney General of Imo State whose beautiful country home in Awo-Idemili was reduced to ashes by a team of fifteen armed men led by this criminal element on the 16th day of June 2021, an operation in which they also burnt down the private residence of Honourable Ekene Nnodumele, the Member Representing Orsu State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly.
They also killed one Mr Ugochukwu Olebu, the APC Publicity Secretary in Orsu and beheaded him after beheading the security guard at the Honourable Member’s house. Their heads were carried away, leaving their bodies headless. Their terror was extended to the houses of three of Orsu’s kinsmen, Chief Cliff Mazi and the President of Amaebu Community whose houses were burnt down the same night.
Since that 16th of June, 2021 till date, Orsu has witnessed chains of death and a chronicle of brutality, murder, rape, kidnapping and cannibalism at the hands of these criminal elements. The open parade of groups of AK47 wielding boys nicknamed Ụmụ Ọma, otherwise, Fine Boys, have turned Orsu into an empire of evil where indigenes and youths are recruited and forced under pain of death to practice Satanism, witchcraft devil worshipping and high-level occultism.
