Music/RadioThe Fate Of Nigerian Hip-hop by unofficialbadch(op): 11:36am On Jun 28, 2018
What do you think is behind the fall of hip hop in Nigeria?
I will say lack of creativity and content because hip hop is a poetic device where you pass a message to your audience from your experience or thoughts. It mirrors feelings.

Now, Nigerian "rappers" who started off with hip hop and were seen as carving a niche in the genre end up twisting voices to sing, being used as singers on a chorus and spit bars not up to par. Full-time singers they are. I'm not saying it's a bad thing if it brings them the money they want, but then the hip-hop culture is not preserved.

Who talks about the ills of the government and society anymore when it's all about 'codeine diet' and shaku shaku type of rhythm. How about they start to talk about real matters. If the country is not running well, where do we hear of lines like:

"This country sick like the president,
nobody cares, everybody so negligent
economy shaky, they take all our wealth with them
fanatics everywhere, they can take a shot for them"

No offense

Is it the audience's demand for party jams that's killing Nigerian hip-hop or what?
Do we still have artistes with creative content and lyrics in their songs?
You don't have to rap about girls, and money only or rap battle bars. There are other relatable issues which can be addressed, and this is where creativity matters.

Nigerian hip-hop is dead, sigh
