Foreign Affairs › Cuba Confirms Arrival Of 3 Russian Ships And Nuclear Submarine near US Border by Uptownerd(op): 3:37pm On Jun 08, 2024 |
HAVANA — In a move underscoring the historically friendly relations between Russia and Cuba, four Russian ships, including a nuclear-powered submarine, are scheduled to arrive in Havana next week. The Cuban foreign ministry announced Thursday that the fleet will be docked in the Cuban capital from June 12 to June 17. This development comes at a time of heightened global tensions, with Western military support for Ukraine exacerbating relations between Russia and the United States.
Cuba’s foreign ministry clarified in a news release that none of the vessels would be carrying nuclear weapons, emphasizing that their presence "does not represent a threat to the region." The fleet comprises the frigate "Gorshkov," the nuclear-powered submarine "Kazan," the fleet oil tanker "Pashin," and the salvage tug "Nikolai Chiker."

Politics › Just In: Russia Sends Advanced Nuclear Submarine Near US Border by Uptownerd(op): 9:12pm On Jun 07, 2024 |
Russia has dispatched the Kazan, a highly advanced Yasen-class nuclear-powered attack submarine, to Cuba, accompanied by a naval group set to visit Havana from June 12 to June 17. This marks a significant deployment as Russia continues to showcase its military prowess on the global stage.
The Kazan represents a new generation of Russian naval capabilities, designed to succeed the Soviet-era nuclear submarines. Equipped with the capacity to launch nuclear cruise missiles, the Yasen-class vessels highlight the modernized strength of Russia's submarine fleet.
This strategic move occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions between Russia and Western nations, particularly due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. Russia has been vocal in its opposition to the military aid provided to Ukraine by the US and NATO, condemning the support as a threat to its own security interests.
Analysts interpret the deployment of the Kazan as a deliberate demonstration of Russian power, likely intended to send a clear message to the United States and its allies. Cuba, a longstanding ally of Russia since the Soviet era, provides a geographically significant location for such a display of military capability.
While the US government has downplayed the significance of the Russian naval group's visit, stating it poses no immediate threat to the region, the inclusion of a state-of-the-art nuclear-powered submarine adds a notable dimension to the event. This development is being closely watched by international observers, who are keen to see how the US and its allies will respond.
Historically, Russian naval ships have made port calls in Cuba, but the deployment of a Yasen-class submarine marks a departure from previous visits. The Kazan’s presence in Cuban waters underscores Russia’s intent to reaffirm its naval strength and geopolitical influence in the Western Hemisphere.
The broader implications of this deployment reflect the ongoing strategic competition between Russia and the West. As Russia continues to modernize its military forces, moves like the dispatch of the Kazan serve as potent reminders of its capabilities and ambitions on the global stage.
The visit of the Kazan and its accompanying naval group to Havana not only symbolizes Russia’s military reach but also its enduring ties with Cuba. This event is a stark reminder of the geopolitical chess game being played between major powers, with Cuba once again becoming a focal point of East-West tensions.
As the world watches, the coming days will reveal more about the implications of this Russian naval deployment. Whether it will prompt a recalibration of Western strategies or serve merely as a symbolic gesture remains to be seen. What is clear, however, is that Russia’s actions are a calculated part of its broader strategy to assert its influence and challenge Western hegemony in multiple regions around the globe.

Foreign Affairs › BREAKING: UN General Assembly Has Voted In Favour Of Palestinian State by Uptownerd(op): 6:36pm On May 10, 2024 |
HAPPENING NOW:
This is unprecedented and HUGE.
The UN General Assembly (not the Security Council, so no veto possible) are voting on a resolution that would grant Palestine new rights and revive its UN membership bid.
This is designed to bypass the US veto on the Security Council and is virtually guaranteed to be approved given the overwhelming support that Palestine has among UN member states.
The resolution would enable Palestine to sit among member states alphabetically, speak on any agenda item at the UN, address international groups on its behalf, and submit resolutions in its name.
The resolution draft points out that this is done "on an exceptional basis and without setting a precedent."
The Israeli UN ambassador has already said that “if it is approved, I expect the United States to completely STOP FUNDING THE UN and its institutions, in accordance with American law."
The UN General Assembly overwhelmingly passed a resolution for the UN Security Council to reconsider and support the full membership of Palestine into the United Nations.
One hundred forty-three countries voted in favor of the resolution, nine voted against it, and 25 countries abstained from voting.

This is a battle between the"Rules-Based Order" and International Law.

AlphaNugget: The 6 month notice is what one will tag as "over wiseness".
The 6 months' notice actually covers his rent period which is only accepted by people that doesn't know their rights, the notice should start from the expiration of his rent and not in between his rent. This is wrong and not what the law says. If his rent expires, he will be served 7 days Notice of Owners Intention to Recover Premises. The six months is in order. |

Foreign Affairs › Russian Military Advisers And War Equipments Arrive Niger by Uptownerd(op): 2:52pm On May 06, 2024 |
Niger, a nation long reliant on Western security cooperation, has taken a dramatic turn towards Russia. State television recently announced the arrival of additional Russian military advisors and equipment, the latest chapter in a deepening relationship that has strained ties with the United States.
This follows the expulsion of French troops in July 2023 by Niger's military junta and the subsequent abrogation of a U.S. military cooperation agreement. The one-thousand-strong U.S. contingent is currently in the process of withdrawing, leaving a strategic vacuum Russia is eager to fill.
The influx of Russian personnel and materiel, including air defense systems, reflects Niger's growing insecurity. The country, like its neighbors Mali and Burkina Faso, faces a relentless insurgency by jihadist groups linked to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State.
Washington's frustration is palpable. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin confirmed the presence of Russian troops at a Nigerien airbase currently housing U.S. forces. Niger's move also jeopardizes the future of a critical U.S. drone base in Agadez, constructed at a significant cost.
The motivations behind Niger's strategic shift are complex. Disillusionment with the West's perceived lack of progress against the insurgency likely plays a role. Russia, on the other hand, has a long history of military cooperation with African nations and may be seen as a more assertive partner.
However, this newfound partnership raises concerns. The imprisonment of a journalist for reporting on alleged Russian eavesdropping underscores a potential shift towards authoritarianism. The long-term consequences of this geopolitical realignment in the Sahel remain to be seen.
The Sahel, a swathe of semi-arid land stretching across Africa, is a region in flux. Niger's deepening relationship with Russia exposes a strategic competition brewing beneath the surface.
Following a military coup in July 2023, Niger's new leadership has swiftly dismantled its Western security partnerships. French troops were expelled, and a U.S. military cooperation agreement was scrapped. Russia has capitalized on this strategic vacuum, deploying military advisors, equipment, and potentially even troops.
This development presents a significant challenge for the West. Niger's U.S. drone base, a key asset in the fight against jihadist extremism, faces an uncertain future. Moreover, the potential for a Russian military presence in the region raises concerns about the expansion of its influence and the erosion of democratic norms.
Niger's decision is likely driven by a combination of factors. Frustration with the West's perceived ineffectiveness against the insurgency undoubtedly plays a part. Russia, on the other hand, may be seen as a more resolute partner, offering a swift and ruthless approach.
However, Niger's embrace of Russia is not without risks. The recent imprisonment of a journalist for reporting on possible Russian eavesdropping is a chilling reminder of the potential consequences. The long-term impact on Niger's democratic trajectory and the wider stability of the Sahel remains to be seen.
This realignment in the Sahel underscores the need for a nuanced Western response. While engaging with Niger's new leadership, the West must also make clear its commitment to democratic values and regional stability. The future of the Sahel hangs in the balance.
