A mobile phone video that started circulating in Abia state, Nigeria, on September 13 shows men with bare torsos forced to lie down in the mud whilst being beaten by Nigerian soldiers. These men are members of IPOB, a separatist organisation in the southeast of Nigeria campaigning for an independent state of Biafra. The authorities are cracking down on the organisation, and have conducted violent raids.

In the first few seconds of the video, which is filmed furtively, Nigerian soldiers beat the men with sticks and force them to run into muddy water, where they have to lie for several minutes while the soldiers shout at them to drink the water. Their clothes and valuables have been stripped from them. The group of IPOB members (Indigenous People of Biafra) were apparently travelling to join separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu in Umuahia, the capital city of his home state of Abia. Abia used to be a part of the Republic of Biafra before it was officially reintegrated into Nigeria in 1970, after fewer than three years of secession.

A statement from the army said only that they were investigating the video and would punish the perpetrators – but also took the opportunity to warn the public of the “bogus” and “manipulated” images propagated by IPOB.

Leading from London

Nnamdi Kanu is today’s face and voice of the IPOB secessionist movement. While living in London, Kanu founded Radio Biafra, which became a channel for Biafran people who felt marginalised after their attempts at a secessionist state in the 1960s (resulting in the Biafran War) were quashed. Kanu returned to Nigeria in October 2015 and was arrested and detained in Lagos State by the Nigerian secret police. He stayed in jail for over a year and half, and was only released in April this year.

But political activists have continued to campaign for independence, and for some, Kanu’s release was a signal that the struggle should restart. There have been a number of clashes between IPOB agitators and state forces over the summer.

Last week, on September 14, Nigerian military came to the house of Kanu and, according to witnesses, started indiscriminately firing.

One man broadcast a Facebook Live from the same compound as the Kanu house, in which loud and regular gunshots can be heard.



The FRANCE 24 Observers team spoke to Prince Kanu, the brother of Nnamdi Kanu, about what happened that afternoon. He sent us photos of the attack on the family compound in Umuahia, the capital city of Abia state.

“The house was riddled with bullets”

It was a war zone, there was blood everywhere. They riddled the house with bullets. I hid while they were here, and then managed to escape by jumping over the fence. They had come a few days before without hurting anyone. [Editor’s note: the Nigerian army published a statement saying the same.]

They went as far as killing the only dog we have in the house. They wanted to kill every living thing. I have not seen my parents or my brother since.

The lawyer for Nnamdi Kanu has since said that his client has “probably” been killed.

The army released a statement saying that any talk of “invasion of any community by soldiers in Abia state” is a “baseless and mischievous” rumour.

The Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, said on Tuesday he would not dethrone the father of the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, over the group’s activities.

Kanu’s father, Eze Israel, is the traditional ruler of Isiama Afaraukwu in Umuahia.

The activities of IPOB in recent times had been threatening the lives and properties of residents in Abia and Igbos in other parts of the country.

That had also led to the deployment of security personnel to Umuahia and proscription of IPOB.



Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, the governor said he would separate the father from the son in handling the matter.

He said: “I clearly separate Kanu from his father. The processes of handling traditional institutions are enshrined in the laws of our land. And traditional rulers who are members of our constituency have leadership and they will do the needful at the appropriate time.

“But for me, I think there is a clear division between Nnamdi Kanu and his father.”

On the activities of IPOB, Ikpeazu added: “But if you are referring to what happened in the past one week. Nigerians know that for some time now that this group called IPOB was agitating for a separate nation called Biafra and that the home state of the leader of that group is Abia State.

“As expected, when such things happen there is an interface between some members of that group and the military, and the theater was Abia State.

“And some people attempted to hijack that event to conflagrate our country. To the glory of God the rest is history, we are still working to stabilize the fragile peace in the region.



“I thank God also for the instruments he used to keep our country as one. We are humbled by the privileges

Just see as they will begin to idolise OLUSEGUN Obasanjo now, forgetting that he was the one that massacred hundreds in Odi, Bayelsa State, and he didn't bother to 'invite' the people for any discussion. By Anthony Ogbonna Amnesty International (AI) has said that it is investigating the clash between the Nigerian Army and members of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, in Umuahia, Abia state from last week’s Sunday. The organization, in a statement signed by its Director in Nigeria, Osai Ojigho, said it is deeply concerned with the reports of cases of violence and illegal loss of lives following the clashes, cautioning the Nigerian army on the use of force on what it called armless civilians. Amnesty International Amnesty International said in November 2016, it “published details of an investigation discovering mass extrajudicial executions and other serious violations” by the Nigerian security forces during peaceful demonstrations by Biafran activists and other gatherings. It said IPOB emerged in 2012 and campaigned for an Independent Biafran state almost 50 years ago and continuing, with an attempt to establish a Biafran state that, however, led to a civil war from 1967 to 1970. It therefore said, with the recent reports of rights abuses in Abia, it is calling for the prioritization of the protection of the lives of the people by the Nigerian government. It also said the Nigerian authorities should rein in on the security forces and ensure accountability after reports of violence. “We are deeply concerned by reports of violence and alleged loss of lives across Nigeria following clashes between the Nigerian military and supporters of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in Umuahia, Abia state. “We are calling on the authorities to ensure the security forces prioritize the protection of people and avoid excessive force. We are investigating all allegations of human rights violations and urge the authorities to investigate and quickly bring those suspected of unlawful killings and other serious violations to justice,” Ojigho said.

A group under the umbrella of Conference of National Autonomous Ethnic Communities Development Association (CONAECDA) in northern Nigeria said the position of governors and traditional rulers in the region on the quest for restructuring the country will be rejected if all ethnic nationalities are not properly consulted.

In a press statement jointly signed by the National Coordinator, Zuwaqu Kali Abungon Bonnat, General Secretary, Suleman Dauda Sukukum and the Conference President, Da. Ericson Fom, urged Northern Governors to intensify efforts towards the implementation of the 2014 National Conference convened by former President Goodluck Jonathan.

“We’re concerned about efforts of some categories of people to chart new agenda on the quest for national restructuring. These are the positions of the Northern State Governors’ Forum and Northern traditional rulers on one hand, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on another hand, and the renewed positions of many other agitators.

“Any position presented by the Northern governors and traditional rulers’ committee, if it does not engage properly with our people, will be considered as the opinion of the committee and not of the over 400 ethnic nationalities of the North.

“We believe a common position can be achieved where honest dialogue is allowed and the opinion of the diverse peoples of the geographical North, cutting across ethnic and religious communities, is sought and respected.”

The group advised the federal government to detach itself from the political ideology of the APC. It said restructuring cannot be done on the basis of any group or political party’s ideas, but on national consensus.

“A political party is not the same as the Federal Government of Nigeria. This is why we consider it needful to make it public and to advise the APC leadership and committee on restructuring to consider their assignment and the outcome to be strictly a party affair, which should be subjected to national scrutiny and consensus.

“It is a dangerous trend to have situations whereby political parties or successive governments jettison the outcome of a national dialogue involving all key stakeholders, such as ethnic nationalities, political parties, religious leaders, civil society, security agencies, and traditional rulers that produced acceptable resolutions simply because they were carried out by different individuals, governments or political parties,” the statement read.

The group reminded President Muhammadu Buhari that sovereignty in democracies is with the people as encapsulated in the constitution. It said Nigerians should be allowed to decide the fate of the nation and be involved in any discussion on what type of country they desire.



The group resolved that the federal government should revisit the resolutions of the 2014 national conference, where issues were successfully resolved by Nigerians, for urgent implementation.
