By Eric Patrick, First Republic Minister of Aviation has charged the Federal Government to conduct a plebiscite to enable the Igbos decided if they want to be part of Nigeria or not. He said it does not make any sense under the existing circ***tances to threaten re-arresting the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu. Igbos, he said, are obviously tired of being part of the Nigerian federation and want to leave. The former aviation boss was responding to question on the call for a restructuring of Nigeria and the threat by the Federal Government to crack down on Nnamdi kanu and IPOB. He said: ”If I wake up and say, I would go and blow up Aso Rock, would I be arrested, or when I march to Aso Rock fully armed? Why the focus on Nnamdi Kanu, what of the other Arewa yoths who are committing similar or more grievous offences? What has been done to them? If Kanu breaks the law, let him be punished, not when he is unarmed and just making statement that his people are not being treated fairly. What Kanu is saying is that Igbo want to go, if you don’t agree with him, put it to plebiscite. That is how it has been done in other places. Scotland said it wanted to leave United Kingdom, and they put it to plebiscite, majority said they didn’t want to go away. I don’t see why it should be different in Nigeria. Plebiscite does not amount to war. In America, since Donald Trump came to power, two states have expressed the desire to quit US, has anybody killed them? The only thing is that when the demand becomes serious, the government will give the opportunity for the people to decide. What has been done to the Arewa youth who said their leaders were the ones who asked them to issue the quit notice? Yes, we know who is sending them to do what they are doing, the politicians are behind them and we are not deceived. What of those behind the anti-Igbo songs, what has the government done to them? Authorities in Catalonia, lawmakers from the ruling, pro-independence coalition in the northeastern region unveiled a bill that lays out the steps to split from Spain. The bill “provides a legal framework for the period immediately after” a possible victory of the “yes” side in the referendum, said Lluis Corominas, head of the parliamentary group of the “Together for Yes” coalition. It will be approved next month by Catalonia’s majority separatist parliament, and automatically applied if the “yes” vote wins. Catalonia, a wealthy region of 7.5 million inhabitants with its own language and customs, has long demanded greater autonomy. For years separatist politicians in the region have tried to win approval from Spain’s central government to hold a vote similar to Scotland’s 2014 independence referendum from Britain — which was approved by London — and resulted in a “no” vote. But Madrid has remained steadfast in its opposition to such a vote, considering it a threat to Spain’s unity. The Constitutional Court has warned Catalonia’s elected officials that they will face legal consequences if they take any steps towards holding such a vote. But they have pressed ahead undeterred. Among other things, the bill states that if the “yes” side wins, “Catalonia has all sovereignty rights… where its continental platform and exclusive economic zone are concerned.” This it defines as all of its land territory including the subsoil, its own waters “including the seabed and subsoil” and the region’s airspace. Asked how it would take control of its borders given Madrid’s rejection of a referendum it deems illegal, Corominas and other separatist lawmakers present at the press conference were unable to give further details. If the “no” wins, though, fresh regional elections will be held, they said. Catalans are divided over the issue of independence, with 41.1 percent in favour and 49.4 percent against, according to the last government poll. By Christopher Isiguzo in Enugu, Emmanuel Ugwu in Umuahia and Emmanuel Addeh in Yenagoa As concerns grow over the ongoing move by the federal authorities to re-arrest leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, groups across the geopolitical zones have described it as a“costly mistake” and warned of dire consequences. In a statement issued at the weekend by the Eastern Consultative Assembly (ECA) and Igbo Leaders of Thought said the federal government which has been floundering with one political mistake after the other should restrain itself from plunging the nation into more crises by angling to re-arrest the IPOB leader. The ECA which is a coalition of several civil society groups noted in the statement signed by its secretary, Elliot Ugochukwu-Uko, who also doubles as Deputy Secretary of Igbo Leaders of Thought, said the government at the centre has continued to portray itself as “a parochial and ethnic-driven government” in its actions and policies hence the bias in handling case of IPOB and its leader. “Any attempt to re-arrest Kanu, especially without arresting the quit notice givers, genocidal song writers and herdsmen-murderers will spell doom for Nigeria. May the world never say nobody told them. Those plotting the re-arrest of Kanu do not know how deeply divided Nigeria is at the moment. It will be a miracle if Nigeria survives this re-arrest agenda.” “The agenda to re-arrest Kanu, agreed by the political class, sponsored by those fiercely opposed to the restructuring of Nigeria and endorsed by those who hate our people with passion, will permanently alter the Nigeria political firmament. This is probably ordained by God,” the statement said. The group recalled that “for close to two years, the world has been regaled by series of childish mistakes by the Nigeria government, as regards to the manner the federal government has handled agitation for self-determination.” It therefore noted: “The decision to re-arrest the most popular easterner alive today in the belief that nothing will happen, is a very costly mistake (and) there will be consequences, from which Nigeria might never recover. “Arresting him in October 2015 was a big mistake. Denying him bail was another mistake. Executing his followers in cold blood in Aba, Onitsha, Asaba and Nkpor, a much bigger mistake. And now, re-arresting a man who commands the fanatical following of millions of angry young men will definitely spur grave surprises for us all, head or tail. Nigeria will never be the same after Kanu’s re-arrest.” Meanwhile, groups in the Niger Delta and Middle Belt have equally voiced their opposition to the move by the federal government to re-arrest the Biafran leader, saying the entire nation would bear the consequences of such action. Speaking from the Niger Delta, the leader of the Afra Descendants Movement (a pan- Ijaw ethnic organisation), Jene Kalada, said any attempt to re- arrest Kanu would only exacerbate the already bad political situation in Nigeria. Kalada who voiced the concerns of Niger groups on phone, said the federal government should know that the Niger Delta people “fully support the Biafra agitation adding that the ongoing move to re- arrest Kanu was ‘a step in the wrong direction because it negates the spirit of unity the government claims it wants to achieve.’” He argued that re-arresting Kanu would bring no solution to the rising ethnic tensions in the country but rather it would “postpone or even bring nearer the doom’s day,” adding that the demand for self- determination did not amount to treason. From the Middle Belt, an activist, Dr. John Danfulani, said the consequences of re-arresting Kanu should not be taken lightly as it would definitely spell doom for the nation. He pointed out that there was no doubt that Kanu had so far conducted his activities peacefully and had done nothing to be labelled a threat to national security “when in fact obvious threats to national security are ignored and allowed to fester. Danfulai, who is from Southern Kaduna, warned: “I don’t see the security agents ready and capable of containing the fall out together with the Boko Haram insurgence in the North-east. So, the best is to avoid any action capable of unleashing anarchy in the land.” The Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) worldwide, the umbrella body of all youths from Ijaw land, yesterday alleged that the federal government was institutionalising double standards in the running of the nation’s affairs. President of the group, Mr. Eric Omare, in a statement in Yenagoa, national headquarters of the IYC, specifically noted that the planned re-arrest of Kanu was not only unfair but smacks of double standards. He argued that the federal government partiality had even become more obvious given that the Arewa youth leaders that threatened to evict Igbo people from the North were neither arrested nor firmly reprimanded. According to the group, many Niger Delta agitators are also languishing in various jails in the country, while the Arewa youths are being feted by state governments in the North. Also, the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) has said any attempt by the federal government to re-arrest Kanu will be resisted by the people of the South-east zone. The group described media reports credited to Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, in which he requested the Federal High Court to revoke the bail given to IPOB leader as the “height of insensitivity’ and unwarranted ‘intimidation.” The group in a statement by its leader, Uchenna Madu and made available to journalists in Enugu yesterday, said Kanu’s non-violent activities towards Biafra actualisation and restoration have never breached, truncated or confronted the “fragile and inconsistent constitution of this federation called Nigeria.” He said the minister’s request was born out of “mischief and ignorance,” stressing that the federal government was indirectly trying to overheat the polity. “Even the Interior Minister, Abdurahman Dambazzu, a Fulani man defended his Hausa Fulani youths of Arewa that threatened the people of Biafra with an ultimatum of quit notice to vacate Arewa land before October 1, 2017 that the coalition of the Arewa youths were misquoted by the media,” he noted. https://www.thisdaylive.com/index.php/2017/08/28/seast-niger-delta-middle-belt-groups-warn-against-move-to-re-arrest-kanu/ 1 Like

From Femi Folaranmi, Yenagoa Ijaw Youths have condemned the federal government (FG) over moves to re-arrest the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu. The FG had few days ago hinted in court processes it filed that it wants to re-arrest Kanu over allegations that he had breached his bail conditions. But IYC in a statement by Eric Omare said the FG is displaying double standards by treating other youth groups in the country engaged in agitations with kid gloves. According to the group, the actions and body language of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration shows deliberate institutionalisation of double standards in national affairs. It warned that the arrest of Kanu would heat up the polity with unimaginable consequences. The advised that “It is the height of nepotism and sectionalism for the Buhari’s administration to treat the Arewa youth leaders who committed serious offence bothering on national security with kid gloves and being hosted to state dinners while leader of IPOB, Nnamdi Kalu is threatened with arrest and several Niger Delta activist languishing in detention. The way the Arewa youths were treated clearly justifies our earlier position that the quit notice was politically motivated and had the backing of the Hausa/Fulani political class. The IYC is convinced that if the Arewa youth leaders were to be members of IPOB or from the Niger Delta region, they would have been in DSS underground detention cells by now. The IYC condemn this institutionalization of double standard in national affairs by the Buhari administration in the strongest terms. We wish to state clearly that with the way and manner the Arewa youth leaders were treated, the Buhari administration has lost the justification to threaten to arrest Mr. Nnamdi Kalu or any other agitator in the southern part of Nigeria. Nigerians ought to be treated equally irrespective of their place of origin or ethnic background. THE battle for autonomy among the constituent parts of the the North raged, on Saturday, with youths from the Middle Belt drawing a battle line with Northern elders under the auspices of Northern Elders Forum (NEF) over the concept of one North. While the youths, under the coalition of the Middle Belt Council, consisting of all groups representing the region, threatened to ostracise any individual of the Middle Belt extraction trying to undermine the political autonomy of the area, the elders insisted on the sanctity of the North as a monolithic entity. The youth, particularly listed a Second Republic Minister and current chairman of the NEF, Chief Paul Unongo, as one of those leaders of the Middle Belt, who risked being ostracized for allegedly undermining the autonomy of the Middle Belt. The battle of wits came barely a week after a stalwart of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC), Ambassador Yahaya Kwande declared as a ruse, the existence of a geographical area called Middle Belt, separate from the perceived monolithic North. Unongo, who is a former Minister of Mines and Power in the First Republic and hails from Benue State, an area considered to be stronghold of Middle Belt, was recently appointed to lead the NEF following the demise of its chairman Alhaji Maitama Sule. An angry president of the Middle Belt Youth Council, Emma Zopmal said in Jos, Plateau State, that there was nothing like a monolithic North, adding that the Middle Belt existed differently from the North. “Middle Belt exists differently from the North and there is nothing like monolithic North. We have lost elder Paul Unongo to the Arewas and he can never represent Middle Belt anywhere. “Unongo and others have lost the script long ago and therefore they are not relevant in the Middle Belt not even among the Arewas” In a separate interview with Sunday Tribune, the Convener of the Middle Belt Patriotic Front, Mr Ibrahim Bunu, said Unongo could not speak for the Middle Belt. “Our main leader widely recognised now is Professor Adamu Baike, who we strongly believe can take the Middle Belt to the next level. Right from the beginning, we have never been part of the North and will never be one. We have no alliance with the north. “All these people from the Middle Belt romancing with the North are doing so for recognition and in order to make ends meet. They have no following here. They have been ostracized. We are watching them; 2019 is just around the corner,” he said. Unity of North sacrosant— Unongo But in another development, Unongo has submitted that the unity of the North is sacrosanct just as the NEF’s deputy secretary, Mr Mustapha Wali, faulted the Federal Government for not taking drastic step to nip in the bud the constant conflicts between farmers and Fulani herdsmen in the country. Unongo, who led NEF members on a courtesy visit to Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, on Saturday, insisted that the forum would continue to strive for the unity of the North in the face of daunting challenges facing the region Unongo said that the meeting of the members would be premised on issues that will bond the North together. He further said that the leadership of the association fell on him with the demise of Sule and maintained that over the years, Benue had been part of the North. Also speaking, Wali accused Federal Government of not taking proactive measures to curb the constant conflicts between farmers and herdsmen which he said had spread to many states of the federation. Speaking on the anti grazing law recently introduced by Benue State government the scribe requested for contents of the new law and enjoined the state government to ensure that the law has human face. Welcoming the elders, Governor Samuel Ortom thanked the Northern Elders Forum for the support the group has extended to President Muhammadu Buhari. Ortom said that the words of elders are words of wisdom and further charged them to rally support for the president in the task of governance. The governor, however, used the opportunity to intimate the elders with the reason for initiating the anti-grazing law by his administration. Ortom said that the wanton destruction of lives and property occasioned by the incessant attacks of herdsmen prompted the state to come out with the law which he said is now a global trend. According to him, ‘the introduction of anti grazing law is aimed to protect lives and property of people of the state including herdsmen. ‘‘At the time we assumed office, we were faced with insecurity particularly, herdsmen attack.
