A customs licensed company is a licensed customs clearance agent who act as an agent for an importer in conducting customs business on their bahalf. The company is registered with the Cooperate Affairs Commisission (CAC) of Nigeria and licensed by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) to operate in Nigeria.
A customs agent prepares and files the neccesary customs entries for the payment of duties found due and take steps to effect the release of the goods in the customs custody, representing their client in all customs matters.
A customs agent must have an excellent understanding of trade requirement and procedure, customs and tariff requirement, also including all factors affecting appraisement, exchange rates and the many regulations concerning calculations of duties.
The complexities and dynamics of international trade are such that an importer will find it extremely advantageous to obtain the services of a customs agent in order to facilitate the importation of goods.
The complexity of the job is evident when one considers that for every shipment entering into Nigeria there are over 500 pages of customs regulations and thousands of tariff items to consider.
The agent must be well versed in determining proper classification and dutiable values, and aware of the vast number of commodities subject to quote.
The agent operation often transcends customs, this also involve contact with several government agencies such as, Standard Organisation of Nigeria (SON), National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) and other agencies.
A customs agent is a valuable partner in the workings of any import intensive business. A customs agent has the legal authority and knowledge to recognize very detailed classification of your goods and the respective tariffs associated with such.
The customs agent provides comprehensive customs clearance services for hasile free import and export of consignments by sea, air and road, one of the many advantages of using a customs agent is that it handles ancillary services that are a part of the international shipping business in accordance to the local and international laws and terms of the import and export business.
Customs clearance is required for ALL imports into Nigeria regardless of, if they are duty free OR not.
For this reasons, the services of a customs agent are highly recommended to the importer.

The forum is made of different proffesionals, if you are an agent and understand this aspect of this business, i will appreciate any form of info. As any agent knows it is always better to get it right from the begining than trying to right the wrong. An agent who get it wrong can keep your cargo in the ports for months unending, i do hope you have heard of such an experience. Thanks
