The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) said it is no longer contemplating court action against Folarin ‘Falz’ Falana, neither is it demanding any apology from him or his management over a song he recently released. The development is coming 24 hours to the expiration of the seven-day ultimatum given to Falz to apologise to Muslims and withdraw his trending video, “This is Nigeria”, over what the group termed “insensitive, thoughtless and highly provocative” scenes. According to a statement on Monday by MURIC’s Director, Ishaq Akintola, made available to PREMIUM TIMES, the group said, “in deference to pleas made by well-meaning Nigerians, it resolved to drag the artiste to government agencies saddled with the responsibility of censoring films and videos.” It also added that the video should have been aptly titled ‘This is Not Nigeria.’ See the statement below: ”It is not a U-turn but a sudden change in tactics. This will have a more enduring impact not only on Falz but the entire entertainment industry. It will also make the agencies sit up to their responsibilities and inject a huge dose of discipline in the music and film industries in general. “Although he stopped short of apologising, the artiste has tried to clear himself in published interviews made available to us. According to him, he did not intend to ridicule Muslims. He said his intention was to call attention to the plight of the Chibok girls although we think he has done that the wrong way. “A scene in the video in which the ‘Chibok girls’ are in pensive mood would have been more representative of the reality on ground because kidnapped girls cannot be dancing like people under the influence of drug. They are in captivity and so they have no cause under the sun for jubilating. Again, the Fulanis (Muslims) were painted as killers while Benue militias (Christians), who rustle Fulani cattle and slaughter their wives and children were not featured. ”This is grossly unfair. Falz should find a way of balancing his video. The kidnappers of the South-east (also Christians) were spared while the oil saboteurs of the Niger Delta (Christians too) were ignored. Falz video is loaded with Islamophobia. That video should be titled ‘This is not Nigeria’. It is Islam-bashing. Nigeria’s video regulatory agency should therefore ban the video or ask the artiste to edit it properly. “With this latest development and even before the seven-day ultimatum expires, MURIC is no longer contemplating court action against Falz, neither are we demanding any apology from him or his management. The likely pecuniary gain in the event of a court validation of our claims does not interest us. We are no longer looking at Falz but at a larger picture. “The courts will only be interested in legalities, judiciability and technicalities but the video board will look beyond all that. Is it professional? Is it balanced? Is it truly representative of our country? Is it morally justifiable? These are what will interest the board and they are in tandem with our thinking. We appreciate artistes and our aim is not to punish Falz. He is not a lazy Nigerian youth. “The matter will now go to those government agencies who are supposed to do their jobs in the first place. Instead of creating media tension and granting cheap popularity, this matter will now be handled by professionals who know what to do.” |

Not only making their names on the football pitch, but some of the most famous players have also gone on to join the military at the peak of their careers, while others joined the army forces before their football careers got going and were then able to thankfully come home safely and start their careers. Here are six of the most famous footballers who served the army. 6. Teemu Tainio – Finland The Finish legendary striker turned down Sir Alex Ferguson’s all-conquering Manchester United for his mandatory national service in his country Army. Back in 1997, The 16-year-old Teemu Tainio, who had already impressed in the Finnish leagues with TP-47 and FC Haka, had a successful trial at Old Trafford, having scored few goals in the same team with the likes Eric Cantona, Karel Poborsky and Paul Scholes. He was poised to return for another spell at Carrington until the call for national service in Finland came “I was at Manchester United for a few weeks but in Finland, you have to do army service and that was just before then,” explained Tainio. “I played a few games, scored a few goals because I was a striker back then and they wanted me to come back but I said: ‘I have to do my army service’. After that, I decided to go and play in France, which is where I stayed for seven years. Why? Things change. I was only 16 when I trained with Manchester United. Eric Cantona was at the club at that time and I trained with the reserves, who had Paul Scholes, Karel Poborsky and those type of players. “I spoke with Sir Alex and he said that he would love me to come back after army service. “But things change, I went to France and the rest is history,” he said 5. Eric Cantona – France The French legend began his professional career with Auxerre, making his debut in 1983, aged just 17. Just as his professional career was getting started, it was put on hold – Eric had to complete two years of military service for the French Army, and only returned to play football professionally in 1986. In spite of his time in the army, you would never describe Eric as disciplined…! Eric Cantona enjoyed a hugely successful football career which saw him win four Premier League titles with Manchester United and many individual awards. But his achievement in football was a poor disciplinary record for much of his career, including a 1995 conviction for an assault on a fan. 4. Bruce Grobbelaar – Zimbabwe Bruce Grobbelaar grew up in Rhod and served in the Army before joini Vancouver Whitecaps of the North American Soccer League in 1979. came to Liverpool's attention durin loan spell at Crewe and signed for t club in 1981. 628 appearances for Liverpool followed The Zimbabwean legendary goalkeeper is one of the most successful African players in English football, having made 628 appearances for Liverpool in 13 years from 1981 to 1994, including 440 in the League, he won the League championship with the club six times, as well as three FA Cups, three League Cups and the 1983–84 European Cup. But Despite having had a successful football career, the Liverpool legend once said. “In the army, I lived in the bush for weeks, so that put the luxuries of England in perspective. I know how lucky I am,” Grobbelaar, who joined the Rhodesian army in 1975, spent time-fighting in the civil war, which ultimately led to the formation of Zimbabwe. 3. Gary Holt -Scotland The former Norwich player Gary Holt spent five years in the Army before becoming a professional footballer. he served in the Army Catering Corps as a chef and played for the British Army team prior to joining Stoke in 1994. Holt was capped 10 times by the Scotland national football team, scoring one goal. He also played for Nottingham Forest and Wycombe Wanderers, before signing for Isthmian League side Lowestoft Town after an unsuccessful transfer to Colchester United. In his managerial career, Holt joined the Norwich City Academy, before being appointed a manager of Falkirk. His tenure lasted until June 2014, when he returned to Norwich as a first-team coach. He left Norwich by mutual consent after the 2015–16 season. 2. Heung-Min Son – South Korea It’s so shame that at some point heung min son #sonheungmin #heungminson has to go to South Korean Army, to become a soldier to serve his country which is mandatory for every South Korean citizens. It will be very hard for him to perform same as before after military service.. I find it hella weird and interesting as to why Korean men have to serve the military for two years by law At some point Son Heung Min has to cut short his football career and join the army Tottenham Hotspur face losing Heung-Min Son for two years when he will have to return to South Korea to complete mandatory military service. Son Heung Min may go to South Korean army. #Tottenham Under the South Korean law, All men are required to complete at least 21 months of military service before they turn 28. This Means in-form Tottenham man can play abroad until July 2019. The 25-year-old has enjoyed his best season for Spurs as he nears 20 goals but could be missing for 21 months if he has to go through with his National Service. 1. Mohamed Salah – Liverpool Since Signing for Liverpool last summer, Mo Salah has been a huge revelation to Premier League. He has now surpassed both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi in terms of goalscoring this season. Back in 2014, Mohamed Salah’s football future looked to be in jeopardy after reports suggested he could be forced to return to Egypt to carry out military service after his registration for an education scheme rescinded by the Egyptian Minister of Higher Education. But By chance, the former Chelsea winger had not returned to Egypt to serve military service after the Egyptian Prime Minister stepped in to resolve the matter. |
Marcus Rashford has the potential to "set the world alight" and could use the World Cup to showcase his talent, says England team-mate Ashley Young. Manchester United forward Rashford, 20, is in Gareth Southgate's squad with club-mate Young, for the tournament which begins on 14 June. "It's the World Cup and it could be his stage to show everybody how far he's come since his debut," said Young, 32. "He produces at United and will be a major player for us at the World Cup." Rashford became the youngest English player to score on his international debut in 2016. He has featured in his country's past eight fixtures under Southgate, who has chosen the third-youngest squad England have sent to a World Cup. "He's going to cope really well," Young added. "I've said it from the time I saw him in the youth team - he's got a massive future ahead of him. He's a fantastic player and if he keeps going the way he is, he'll set the world alight. "If you look at the goals he has scored on how many different debuts, it just shows he steps up in the big games." 'I'm still an attacker' Only Young, Chelsea defender Gary Cahill and Leicester striker Jamie Vardy are over 30 in England's squad, which does not contain a player to have won a game at a World Cup. Young's inclusion comes despite him not being involved in the squad during the qualifying campaign. He ended four years out of the international set-up when he featured in November's friendly draw with Brazil. In his time away from England, he has adapted to a change in role after switching from winger to wing-back at Old Trafford. He was in impressive form last season, playing in 38 United matches, but he says that, despite his versatility, he "would rather be attacking than defending". Young said: "I don't pretend, I still see myself as an attacker, especially the way that we play with the full-backs or wing-backs high up. "Different managers play different formations. I think I am one of those players who has a good footballing brain. Wherever the manager calls on me to play I will give 100% for the England shirt and go to do as well as I can." England's key World Cup dates 2 June v Nigeria (friendly) 7 June v Costa Rica (friendly) 12 June Squad leaves for Russia 18 June v Tunisia (opening group game) 24 June v Panama (second group game) 28 June v Belgium (final group game) 'We can go a long way in Russia' England are preparing for friendlies against Nigeria at Wembley on Saturday and Costa Rica at Leeds United's Elland Road ground five days later. Southgate's side will then play their first World Cup game against Tunisia on 18 June, four days after the tournament begins in Russia. Cahill believes England's youthful squad possesses more experience than age suggests as a result of players' club exploits and Young insists the "togetherness" Southgate has harnessed should not be underestimated. "The squad can achieve as much as it wants to achieve," said Young. "We've got a fantastic group of players here; some exciting players who can change games in a moment. "Going into the tournament, we're full of confidence, especially with the friendlies we've played against some of the best teams in the world. We've mixed it against them and I think there's definitely going to be a good tournament from this England squad. "When we eventually get out to Russia, the togetherness and team spirit we have shown so far will take us a long way in the tournament." |
Choosing a new career —whether you want to do a drastic 180 or just make a minor shift—can seem downright impossible. There are so many options. You don’t know what you’re qualified to do. Frankly, you’ve been so busy worrying about your current job that you haven’t taken half an hour to consider what you’d rather be doing. And when you do start to think about it? Your mind morphs into a cloudy mess of overwhelm. Believe me: I’ve been there, too. And after I did find what I was looking for, I’ve spent time coaching friends and colleagues who are going through the same thing. While there aren’t any shortcuts when it comes to planning a big career change, I’ve found that breaking the big question down into a few simpler ones can be a productive way to get started. Sometime this week, take the first step toward planning your dream career by filling in the blanks in the sentences below. 1. If I could choose one friend to trade jobs with, I’d choose ____________, because ____________. 2. I’ve always wondered what it would be like to do ____________. It’s interesting to me because ____________. 3. If I had the right education or skill set, I’d definitely try ____________, because ____________. 4. If I had to go back to school tomorrow, I’d major in ____________, because ____________. 5. My co-workers and friends always say I’m great at ____________, because ____________. 6. The thing I love most about my current job is ____________, because ____________. 7. If my boss would let me, I’d do more of ____________, because ____________. 8. If I had a free Saturday that had to be spent “working” on something, I’d choose ____________, because ____________. 9. When I retire, I want to be known for ____________, because ____________. Once you’re done, take a look at your answers. You may find clear-cut patterns—for example, that everything on your list has to do with designing beautiful spaces or playing sports. But at the very least, you’ll probably see some common themes. Maybe it’s creativity, or caring for others, or working outside using your hands. And no, those things don’t point to one single career path, but knowing what you value, what you enjoy, and what you want to be known for is a great way to get started honing in on what you want to do next (or, hey, eliminating possibilities). |
Amy Cuddy, a Harvard psychologist, has devoted her studies to the impact body language has on your confidence, influence, and, ultimately, success. Her biggest findings center on the powerful effects of positive body language. Positive body language includes things like appropriate eye contact, active engagement/listening, and targeted gestures that accentuate the message you’re trying to convey. Studies show that people who use positive body language are more likable, competent, persuasive, and possess higher amounts of emotional intelligence . Here’s how it works: 1. Positive body language changes your attitude. Cuddy found that consciously adjusting your body language to make it more positive improves your attitude because it has a powerful impact on your hormones. 2. It increases testosterone. When you think of testosterone, it’s easy to focus on sports and competition, but testosterone’s importance covers much more than athletics. Whether you are a man or a woman, testosterone improves your confidence and causes other people to see you as more trustworthy and positive. Research shows that positive body language increases your testosterone levels by 20%. 3. It decreases cortisol. Cortisol is a stress hormone that impedes performance and creates negative health effects over the long term. Decreasing cortisol levels minimizes stress and enables you to think more clearly, particularly in difficult and challenging situations. Research shows that positive body language decreases cortisol levels by 25%. 4. It creates a powerful combination. While a decrease in cortisol or an increase in testosterone is great on its own, the two together are a powerful combination that is typically seen among people in positions of power. This combination creates the confidence and clarity of mind that are ideal for dealing with tight deadlines, tough decisions, and massive volumes of work. People who are naturally high in testosterone and low in cortisol are known to thrive under pressure. Of course, you can use positive body language to make yourself this way even if it doesn’t happen naturally. 5. It makes you more likable. In a Tufts University study, subjects watched soundless clips of physicians interacting with their patients. Just by observing the physicians’ body language, subjects were able to guess which physicians ended up getting sued by their patients. Body language is a huge factor in how you’re perceived and can be more important than your tone of voice or even what you say. Learning to use positive body language will make people like you and trust you more. 6. It conveys competence. In a study conducted at Princeton, researchers found that a one-second clip of candidates for senator or governor was enough for people to accurately predict which candidate was elected. While this may not increase your faith in the voting process, it does show that perception of competence has a strong foundation in body language. 7. It improves your emotional intelligence . Your ability to effectively communicate your emotions and ideas is central to your emotional intelligence. People whose body language is negative have a destructive, contagious effect on those around them. Working to improve your body language has a profound effect on your emotional intelligence. Bringing It All Together We often think of body language as the result of our attitude or how we feel. This is true, but psychologists have also shown that the reverse is true: changing your body language changes your attitude. Have you felt the impact from changing your body language? Please share your thoughts in the comments section below, as I learn just as much from you as you do from me. |
