2023 Ijakadi Festival: MOK Felicitates Olofa Of Offa, Olofa-in-Council, Offa Community

The Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode (MOK) Foundation, a non-governmental organization that promotes education, health and empowerment in Offa and beyond, has joined the Olofa of Offaland, Oba Mufutau Muhammad Gbadamosi Okikiola, Esuwoye II, Ajagungbade I, the Olofa-in-Council, Offa sons and daughters, and Offa friends to celebrate the 2023 Ijakadi Offa Festival.

The Ijakadi Offa Festival is an annual event that showcases the rich cultural heritage and history of the Offa people in Kwara State. The festival features various activities such as press conference, Juma’at service, commissioning of projects, presentation of awards, church service, traditional dances, parade by districts, wrestling bouts, horse racing, and more12.

The highlight of the festival is the symbolic wrestling match (Ijakadi) between the Olofa and his second in command (Chief Eesa), which signifies the virtues of equity, justice and wisdom, as well as strength and determination, among the Offa people3. The Olofa usually wins the match, while the Eesa always finds an excuse for his defeat, saying "it was the corn chaff that made me fall, not the Olofa". The Olofa then cuts a tuber of yam into two equal parts while being blindfolded, demonstrating his fairness and balance.

The MOK Foundation, founded by Alhaji Muhydeen Okunlola Kayode, a philanthropist and businessman, has expressed its delight and support for the Ijakadi Offa Festival, which it described as a platform to encourage, reward and stimulate the practice of community, valour, courage, heroism and determination in Offa land.

The foundation also commended the Olofa of Offaland for reviving the festival in 2012, after it had been abandoned for 30 years, and for using it as a means of bringing the people of Offa together for peace and development. The foundation pledged to continue to partner with the Olofa and the Offa community in promoting the cultural, social and economic well-being of the town.

The Ijakadi Offa Festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors, tourists and dignitaries from within and outside the country, who will witness the colourful and historical display of the Offa culture and tradition. The festival will run from December 27 to December 30, 2023.

The Great Man Called Alani!

```BY: BUSY BRAIN```
Birthday is special and distinctive; its distinctive nature is refined in wishes and goodwill messages from friends, families, colleagues, subordinates, and contemporaries from afar and near. By now, heaps of messages would have flooded Mr. Adebayo Lukman Alani's phones with many gifts and picture frame presentations, not because of being a lecturer at Lens Polytechnic Offa but because of his reserved humility and respect for all and sundry.
John Ruskin says, the first test of a truly great man is his humility. By humility, I don't mean doubt of his powers or hesitation in speaking his opinion, but merely an understanding of the relationship between what he can say and what he can do. Alani's words and doings are the embodiment of humility.
Robert Green Ingersoll in his classical quote posits that a great man does not seek applause or place; he seeks truth; he seeks the road to happiness, and what he ascertains, he gives to others. Alani, an altruistic broadcast journalist, gives the knowledge he ascertains to students. He works with full dedication and commitment without seeking applause. He is not only loved, he is cherished for what he does.
"If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it. Alani does not only impart knowledge but also inspires others with his passion for mass communication. As a lecturer at the Mass Communication Department, Mr. Lukman Alani has become a cornerstone known for his dedication and his unwavering commitment to the field of journalism.
Undoubtedly, Alani's impact goes beyond the classroom. His enthusiasm for the subject has touched the lives of many, shaping young minds and instilling in them a love for communication and media. His guidance and mentorship have not only encouraged the students to excel academically, but also to pursue their dreams with confidence and determination.
As today remains special, it is imperative to take a moment to express gratitude for Mr. Lukman Alani's contributions to education and the field of mass communication at our prestigious polytechnic. May his birthday be filled with joy, laughter, and the warmth of those whose lives he has touched.
Like the word of Dr. Yisa Azeez, a king was born today. Happy Birthday to the king, I wish you more prosperous years ahead.
History has its pages where those who made change possible can never be forgotten. The pages of history are filled up with the names of men of inestimable values. Either positive or negative, a myriad number of people are busy writing their history. The future will tell if history will be kind to them based on what they have written. The truth remains pellucid, what you sow, you shall reap.
With legible handwriting, the Rector of the Federal Polytechnic Offa Kwara State, Engr. Dr. Kadiri Kamoru Oluwatoyin FNSE is writing a beautiful epistle on the pages of history with his new innovative idea and strides of development that have characterized the nooks and crannies of the Polytechnic. The new trends of development are visible to the blind and audible to the deaf. No gainsaying, he has given birth to a new polytechnic and ushered in the era of methods.
In the words of Malcolm X, education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today. Dr. Kadiri came to the position of the Chief Executive of the Federal Polytechnic Offa fully prepared. He has his roadmap and template for his administration, he is desirous of change, and he believes in himself with a mantra, tagged the system must work. In all ramifications, the system is working.
Undoubtedly, the Federal Polytechnic Offa is blessed with a brilliant Rector, the Rector's brilliance is top-notch in the field of Engineering, he is an astute administrator, but he is not careless to rely on his mental, physical, and administrative abilities, he operates an open door policy with his able lieutenants, staff unions and academic board members. He is not a loner on the path to achieving a better institution and shall never walk alone.
Kofi Annan in his classical quote said education is a human right with immense power to transform. On its foundation rests the cornerstone of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development. The system of administration at the Federal Polytechnic Offa under the leadership of Dr. Kadiri Kamoru is that of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.
Dr. Kadiri led administration has extended the workforce in the Polytechnic with specified responsibilities through unbundling and expansion of units, departments, and directorates for institutional growth, staff efficiency and productivity. He appoints and re-appoints capable personnel to drive the system along his desired dream.
On the 23rd of November 2023, the long overdue FEDPOFFA water was launched for commercialization. Yes, it is overdue and that is why it is pertinent to give kudos to the one who brought it to reality. It takes a mindset to break the barrier of impossibility. Interestingly, the water project is accompanied by FEDPOFFA bread. The institution is moving from consumption to production of basic commodities to meet the needs of the Polytechnic community and boost the Internally Generated Revenue. It is a trend of development.
As a thoughtful and resourceful researcher, Dr. Kadiri led the management team to the Raw Material Research and Development Council, National Board for Technical Education, and National Office For Technology Acquisition and Promotion in Abuja in an attempt to revive the research of sweet potatoes into confectioneries which the Polytechnic is known for in the past. This attempt aims to promote the cultivation and utilization of potato varieties to create delectable confectioneries, tapping into its potential as a valuable raw material to contribute to the growth and development of the Nigerian confectionery industry and to seek notable interventions from the agencies for the growth and development of the Polytechnic.
The administration places priority on polytechnic mandate which is research, innovation, skills and training manpower for national development. Through his innovative template, the institution's skills development centre where polytechnic products will be commercialized to meet the immediate needs of the community has been activated with appointment of capable personnel.
The wind of change is blowing with the trend of development at the Federal Polytechnic Offa under the leadership of the 5th substantive Rector, Engr. Dr. Kadiri Kamoru Oluwatoyin
My definition of a fulfilled life varies and is not measured by big mansions, or exotic cars, a fulfilled person is someone who sees other people's problems as a challenge that must be tackled; a fulfilled personality is someone who impacts meaningfully on the lives of people devoid of ethnicity, bias, and sentiment. In all ramifications, MOK is a fulfilled personality. His humility is refined in his simplicity.
Allah says in the Holy Quran that those who spend charitably from what He has provided for them will have a reserved place in paradise, to buttress this are those martyrs who were given the certificates to paradise right from their lifetime. Those martyrs remain and alive spending for charity. They are in different localities assisting people and giving hope to the hopeless.
Your life cannot be separated from what you do.
Offa is blessed with notable illustrious sons and daughters making waves in different fields of endeavor across the globe. MOK is one of these numerous numbers of fulfilled Offa sons and daughters. He sees the world as transient and beyond himself, he is a consistent personality in the delivery of promises. You cannot have him around you and feel insecure. From Emilokan To Enikanlomo
```BY BUSY BRAIN```

This morning, I picked up my gas cylinder and proceeded to the filling station, on getting there, I was informed that 1 kg of gas cost a thousand Naira. My initial plan to fill 5 kg was reduced to 3 kg with immediate effect. While at the filling station, another customer came to fill her 3 kg cylinder, and she asked the attendant to fill a gas worth five hundred Naira (N500), which is half of 1 kg. Being a familiar face in the neighborhood, I jokingly asked why she preferred to fill N500 gas, and she askance replied, 'Enitokanlomo.'

For my non-Yoruba audience, 'emilokan' is a Yoruba word that depicts 'it is my turn' and enitokan-lomo in this context is another Yoruba metaphorical word which means 'Whoever is affected by the current situation knows where the shoe pinches.' The woman filled what she could afford at that moment and just like her response, she knows where the current economic downturn is pinching her. The current situation is not friendly. Enitokan-lomo!

Kofi Awoonor in his Song of Sorrow poem writes 'Dzogbese Lisa has treated me thus, it has led me among the sharps of the forest, returning is not possible and going forward is a great difficulty…' Nigeria is actually in the sharps of the forest, returning is not possible and moving forward has become a mirage. Nigeria cannot go back to the military regime or the colonial era and despite the independence and democracy, the country is not moving forward. It is the usual lamentation of the 'Nigeria Go Better mantra' over the years.

Recently, it came to light that the current administration spent $507,384, which is equivalent to nearly 400 million Naira for hotel accommodation in New York when the President and his team attended the UN General Assembly in September. It was also gathered that the federal government has requested a $1.5 billion loan to buy new cars for government officials, including SUVs for each of the 360 members of the House of Representatives, which will cost N160 million per car. How are we going to move forward as a nation when this sum of money is going for cars in the period of four years?

As usual, in defense of profligacy spending, the Senate has come out to justify the decision to buy imported sports utility vehicles (SUVs) for lawmakers in the two chambers. Sunday Karimi, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Services, explained that the leadership of the National Assembly made the choice for the lawmakers based on considerations of durability and maintenance over four years.

In his counter-criticism of the public outcry surrounding the purchase of the SUVs, Karimi flayed critics to adduce to the ministers who ride about four official vehicles. Where is the difference? All feeding large on the taxpayers' money; of course, we all know that heaven will not fall. It is the story of birds of a feather that flock together.

Nigerians are made to believe that fuel subsidy is evil and anti-masses, while Mr. President at the point of inauguration declared its total removal. Ever since this official pronouncement on national television, the gown of our nightmare remains unchanged. Things become more exacerbated. The price of goods and commodities is mounting Mountain Everest and Kilimanjaro. If the subsidy is truly anti-masses as portrayed, the masses are not supposed to be suffering after its removal. Tell the President that the endurance talk and consolation sermon are already falling on deaf ears. People are not smiling.

As reported in Premium Times on October 7, 2023, the National President of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), Festus Osifo revealed that the Nigerian government has restored subsidy on petrol, despite the official government policy of breaking with the subsidy regime since May.

The Daily Trust report of September 21, 2023, also chronicled the revelation of a subsidy payment of N169.4 billion in August to keep the pump price at N620 per litre.

Similarly, in the Punch news of October 11, 2023, the oil marketers countered the Federal Government's denial of the reintroduction of subsidy. As against the claim of Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL who denied the subsidy payment, the marketers claimed that the current pump price of petrol should not be less than N800/litre if there was no subsidy on the commodity. It has been a loggerhead between marketers and the Government on subsidy payment and removal. Who is deceiving who? Why the removal since there will be continuous partial payment? Buddha, the founder of Buddhism, says, “Three things cannot be long hidden, the sun, the moon, and the truth…”

Nigeria's annual inflation rate climbed to 26.7% in August 2023, from 24.08% in July and marking the highest rate since September 2005, reflecting the impact of the removal of fuel subsidies, the devaluation of the official exchange rate, and security issues in food-producing regions.

A Déjà vu of the endurance sermon lasted eight(cool years during Buhari's administration and ended up in disappointment. Many of Buhari's loyalists who preached endurance eventually buried their heads in shame. The reality of today is that the floor of the mandate we are standing on is hot and burning us to the marrow. The poor are no longer breathing, they are gasping heavily as many have been streamlined to the extreme poverty level. Nigerians are not asking for too much. Good governance and better living conditions for all and sundry. Some easement we require.

A quick reminder to Mr. President that it is not yet a victory when the masses are drenched in pains of hunger and insecurity. The renewed hope is still in anticipation; we are anxiously waiting for it to manifest. Lest I forget, congratulations to the President on the Supreme Court victory. May God use him to lead us to the right path.

*Away and Beyond: Happy Birthday To The HOD Of Mass Communication, Mrs. Kehinde Adeniran*

_Ejire ara isokun, wini wini loju orogun, ejiworoko loju iya e..._

The above lines form part of the impressive panegyrics of twins. Whenever people weave the lines into words to appraise twins, it is always like a soothing balm, pleasant to the ears, and incredibly sonorous.

I opened my piece with a few of the lines because it is a celebration of Ejires (twins), the Head of Department of Mass Communication of the best private Polytechnic In Nigeria, Lens Polytechnic Offa and her twin sister.

In the words of Abraham Lincoln, "…if you want to test man's character, give him power”. The question I have always wanted to ask Abraham is about women. What will one give to women if one wishes to test their character? Women in this regard are likely to misuse power more than men. Apologies to the feminists, even though I said 'likely'.

Whether women are likely to misuse power or not, Mrs. Kehinde is not the caliber of women who are power-drunk. She knows her mandate as the Head of Department and stands firmly to uphold her essential duties excellently and diligently.

My constant reservation for Dr. Yisa Azeez, the amiable proprietor of the great institution, is his ability and high instinct to put the round peg in the round hole. With all sincerity, the HoD of Mass Communication is one of the round pegs in the round hole. Her brilliance, diplomacy, and pragmatism as a leader are at the echelon with her very endearing personality. She is calm, reserved, and highly disciplined.

Beyond her professional competence, the HOD is admired and respected for her approachability and genuine care for students' well-being. Her mentorship has guided many students through personal and academic challenges, providing support and encouragement along the way. She serves as an inspiring role model, exemplifying professionalism, integrity, and a steadfast commitment to ethical journalism.

W. Barnett Pearce and Vernon Cronen in their Coordinated Management of Meaning theory of Interpersonal Communication posit on the actions and reactions while having a social interaction. Every single person has their interpretation and found meaning while interacting. This construction of meaning during the conversation comprises an interpersonal system that explains actions and reactions. Mrs. Kehinde's actions and reactions are emblems of respect and humility. She is a woman of virtue with dignified simplicity.

Jennifer Lopez in her strong women quote said, “Doubt is a killer. You just have to know who you are and what you stand for.” Mrs. Kehinde's ability and capability to propel the academic cum administrative activities of the Department are not in doubt. Staff and students know what she stands for; she stands for discipline, work ethic, and academic excellence.

Nigeria has undeniably been supported by brave women who have shown great prowess and have stood up to fight for what they believe in, and their influence is of great significance today. I have read about women on the pages of history, the Moremi Ajasoro, Funmilayo Ransome Kuti, and Alimotu Pelewura Erelu among many others, they are women of timber and caliber whose names remain indefatigable in history. For her doggedness, perseverance, commitment, dedication, and leadership by example, Mrs. Adeniran is on the verge of writing history where those who made change possible can never be forgotten.

Psalm 46:5 says, "God is within her, she will not fall” As Mrs. Kehinde marks a new year today with her Taiwo, May Almighty God continue to be within you, and may you not fall.

Away and beyond, happy birthday to the HoD of Mass Communication, I wish her and her twin sister more prosperous years ahead.
