and duped a middle-aged man of N223, 000 cash.
A resident of the area, simply identified as Johnson, said the incident
happened at about 2:12pm on Tuesday after the victim returned with
his ‘girlfriend’ to the brothel, after relaxing at a drinking spot in the area.
He said that the victim, who drove in an unmarked Toyota Sienna bus
with the said lady, entered the prostitute’s room inside the brothel and
immediately slept off.
Johnson said that when the victim woke and he did not see the girlfriend,
he became alarmed.
“He immediately searched his own clothes and to his amazement, he
discovered that all the money he had on him had been taken away,” he
said. “It then dawned on him that the girl had drugged him to dupe him
of his N2230,000.
Our reporter learnt that the victim, a contractor, was resident at Madalla,
Niger State. He was said to have gone out for Sallah celebration when

said the division was not aware of the incident. |

According to the statement, N-Power is designed to address the challenge of
youth unemployment by providing a structure for large scale and relevant
work skills acquisition and development while linking its core and outcomes
to fixing inadequate public services and stimulating the larger economy.
The government also assured that the modular programmes under N-Power
will ensure that each participant will learn and practice all that is necessary
to find or create work.
President Buhari had promised that his administration would implement
social welfare programmes for the vulnerable in the society
The programme has three main segments, and they are:
• N-Power Teacher Corps
• N-Power Knowledge

environment services, utilities and engineering, hospitality and catering,
automative, aluminium and gas and construction. |
Alhaji Lai Mohammed: “Squatting’’ at Apo Since assuming duty as the spokesperson of the APC-led government in October 2015, the minister of information and culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, is said to have attended only two official foreign trips. The first trip was the one to Qatar when he attended the International Press Institute’s congress in March while the second was to Cote D’voire in April where he attended the UN World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) Commission for Africa. But the plan by the minister to attend another important foreign trip was hampered by lack of funds, prompting the ministry to look elsewhere for a “bailout.’’ Lack of funds to undertake a trip for a conference on Tourism for Development necessitated the ministry to request for a loan of N13m from an agency under it to enable the minister and five other staff members of the ministry to travel to China. Although ‘belt tightening measure’ is said to be partly responsible for this, sources at the ministry said the current economic reality facing the country occasioned by financial stringency was the major reason for the austere measures. Little wonder the information minister, who was the national publicity secretary of the APC, is said to be “squatting’’ in a residence at Apo. A source in the ministry told Daily Trust on Sunday in confidence that although he doesn’t know where exactly the residence is situated or the size of the apartment, the minister himself had confirmed that he was squatting there as he does not own the house. Also, the information minister was said to have assumed office with three aides, two special assistants and a personal assistant. Daily Trust on Sunday could not confirm how many domestic staff the minister has employed because staff members of the ministry were reluctant to speak with our reporter because they feared they may be investigated as they have been warned that the ministry was probing the leakage of the request of N13m loan from the NBC on the social media. Daily Trust on Sunday could not confirm if there was any renovation in his office when he assumed duties, but our findings show that the minister uses four Toyota Land cruiser SUVs and two Hilux vans in his convoy, which he confirmed in December. Malam Muhammed Musa Bello: Living in family house Since his appointment by President Muhammadu Buhari as the minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in November 2015, his conduct and operation so far has shown a complete departure from the past. Past ministers who presided over the FCT lived a demonstrable life of affluence. However, due to the current economic realities, the current FCT minister is said to be operating a system that is a complete departure from the past. This is evidenced in his appointment of political and domestic aides, as well as the number of cars he maintains in his convoy. The FCT minister is said to have found it easy to adjust, given his humble background as someone who had always lived a modest life. Unlike in the past, when his predecessors rewarded political loyalists with bloated political and domestic appointments, the current FCT minister is said to have only few. According to an aide, realising the reality on the ground, coupled with the fact that he was not as rich as some of his political counterparts before his appointment as the FCT minister, Bello has chosen not to be influenced by his new position. For instance, the convoys of the past FCT ministers were always said to be intimidating due to the retinue of cars that accompanied them to either the office or official functions, but it was gathered that when Bello assumed office, he insisted that there must be a departure from the past. Also, the minster is said to have only appointed three political aides, namely, the special assistant on media, personal assistant, and another special assistant to aid his work. This is in addition to one domestic staff who is his personal cook, while a few others are staff members of Park and Recreation, who are said to be keeping the compound clean. Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewale: No paraphernalia of office Before his appointment as the minister of health last year, Prof. Isaac Folorunso Adewale was the vice chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Oyo State. He lived in Ibadan. The professor of Gynaecology and Obstetrics relocated to Abuja after his appointment, and now lives in a modest rented apartment in Maitama, Abuja. Findings by our reporter showed that, as a vice chancellor, he was a civil servant; hence he has continued to live a simple life as one without any paraphernalia of office since assumption of office. He is always seen in his favourite black suit and has no retinue of aides at the office. According to sources, he has only been seen in his official car. And there are only three cars in his convoy. Ogbonnaya Onu: Maintains old office furniture Since the return of democratic rule in 1999, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu had been in the opposition until last year when the APC defeated the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). A former governor and now the minister of science and technology, Dr Onu is said to have led a modest and austere life; not known to have enriched himself while in office as governor. The Ebonyi State-born minister only wears white and white, with an Igbo traditional red cap every day. When he assumed office as minister in November last year, Onu was said to have told officials at the ministry not to bother changing any furniture, but simply clean up the office. His ministry is also said to be feeling the heat of the harsh economic situation, prompting him to maintain only one official SUV car and two aides; a personal assistant and one special adviser on media. A source close to him said he had no domestic staff at home, except his relatives. Since he assumed office as minister, Dr. Onu is said to have made about five foreign trips. His first trip was to China and second to Malaysia, while the third trip took him to Senegal; the fourth one was to China and fifth to Italy. All trips were on official assignments. Solomon Dalung: Lives in 2 bedroom apartment Solomon Selcap Dalung is a lawyer by profession who hails from the town of Sabon Gida in the present Langtang South Local Government Area of Plateau State. Before President Muhammadu Buhari appointed him minister of sports and he was inaugurated on November 11, 2015, Barrister Solomon Dalong used to dress in suit, as it is common with lawyers. But on assumption of duties, Dalung abandoned his traditional suit wears and adopted his trademark khaki uniform, which he explained was because of his activism and care for the welfare of the masses. Unlike his predecessors, Dalung jettisoned the choice of Abuja National Stadium as his office and pitched tent at the Federal Secretariat in the Central Area for his office. Faced with the economic reality on ground, he was said to have decided to reduce the number of aides, preferring to have a special assistant on media and a technical assistant. Dalung is believed to be among Buhari’s ministers who are facing austere times. Even the house he stays at Gwarinpa is said to have been given to him by a close friend. Many Nigerians do not expect to see a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria residing here. When a video of the sports and youth minister patronising a local tea shop, popularly called ‘mai shayi’ went viral on the social media, some persons were of the opinion that the Jos-born lawyer was trying too hard to blend with the common man, while people who know him deeply say Dalung had always been like that, “a man of the people’’ who is not given to amassing ill-gotten wealth. When Dalung spent two days in Kaduna for the much anticipated match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Pharaohs of Egypt in March, he was said to have requested to stay at a very modest hotel with the Nigeria Football Federation, a parastatal under the Ministry of Sports. Dalung currently carries a three-car convoy: a Lexus jeep and two other cars. Senator Aisha Alhassan: Used her money to purchase escort vehicle Popularly known as Mama Taraba, Aisha was a senator who also sought to become the governor of the state before her appointment into Buhari’s cabinet. As someone given to the pomp and pageantry of office, Aisha is said to have found a different scenario when she assumed duties at the Women Affairs Ministry. Though faced with the unfavourable economic situation she met at the ministry, her desire to maintain a high profile was said to have prompted her to personally use her resources to purchase the escort vehicle on her convoy. |

The Presidency has said that palliatives for the new fuel pricing regime are contained in the 2016 budget and would start in few weeks’ time. Senior Special Assistant to the Vice President on Media and Publicity Laolu Akande said this in a statement yesterday. The breakdown: •The direct payment of N5,000 monthly to one million extremely poor Nigerians for 12 months as provided for in the 2016 budget for which N68.7bn has been appropriated. •The direct provision of very soft loan--cash for market women, men and traders including artisans and agric workers. This would be for a total of 1.76m Nigerians, without the requirement for conventional collateral. Some of the traders will likely get about N60,000. A total sum of N140.3 billion has already been appropriated for this in the budget •Payment of between N23,000 to N30,000 per month to 500,000 unemployed graduates who will be trained, paid and deployed to work as volunteer teachers, public health officers and extension service workers, among other responsibilities. They will also be given electronic devices to empower them technologically both for their assignments and beyond. Similarly, 100,000 artisans will also be trained and paid. N191.5bn has been set aside for this in the budget. •At least 5.5 million Nigerian primary school children; starting first in 18 states, three per geo-political zones; will be fed for 200 school days under the free school feeding programme. N93.1bn has been appropriated for this in the 2016 budget. •100,000 tertiary students in Science Technology Engineering & Maths-STEM, plus Education will partake in the N5.8bn already provided for this education grant in the budget. This payment will also be paid directly to the students. |
British Newspaper, The Guardian , has replied British Prime Minister, David Cameron on his comment about 'fantastically corrupt' Nigeria and Afghanistan. In its editorial, the newspaper said he 'is guilty of epic hypocrisy.' Below is the Editorial: There are times when a manual earth-restructuring implement is best referred to as a spade, so let us speak plainly. A summit on corruption will be held on Thursday in a city that is internationally recognised (by the IMF, among others) as a tax haven. It is being hosted by a politician who admitted last month that he has personally profited from offshore finance and whose party is bankrolled by an industry that makes extravagant use of those same tax havens. Not only that, he has intervened to aid tax avoiders. That’s right, David Cameron is holding a meeting on corruption. The prime minister is not personally corrupt – but he is certainly guilty of epic hypocrisy. So, for that matter, are Britain and the west. They have spent decades ordering poor countries and failed states to sort out their problems with dodgy money, even while taking much of that dodgy money and ploughing it through their banks, their ritzy stores, their estate agents, and their offshore tax havens – with barely any questions asked or eyebrows raised. WhenMr Cameron was caught on camera on Tuesday boasting to the Queen of the “fantastically corrupt countries” turning up at Lancaster House this week, he might have mentioned that Afghanistan is a failed state that did not get any less failed over 13 years of British intervention. And he should certainly have mentioned that the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, is coming to London to lobby it to sort out the tax havens in its own backyard. Indeed, Mr Cameron might have quoted a letter sent to him a fortnight ago by campaigners in Nigeria . “We are embarked on a nationwide anti-corruption campaign,” the letter said. “But these efforts are sadly undermined if countries such as your own are welcoming our corrupt to hide their ill-gotten gains in your luxury homes, department stores, car dealerships, private schools and anywhere else that will accept their cash with no questions asked. The role of London’s property market as vessels to conceal stolen wealth has been exposed in court documents, reports, documentaries and more.” So the president of the Nigerian senate, Bukola Saraki, currently facing allegations that he failed to declare his assets, owns a property in London’s Belgravia in his own name. But last month’s Panama Papers revealed that the £5.7m property next door is owned by companies incorporated in the Seychelles and British Virgin Islands, whose respective shareholders are Saraki’s wife and former special assistant. And a £1.65m townhouse in Kensington is shown as belonging to a BVI company whose sole shareholder is Folorunsho Coker, former head of the number plate production authority of the state of Lagos and currently business adviser to the governor of Lagos. None of these individuals may have done anything wrong, but the charge from those campaigners is hard to duck. Under successive governments, from Thatcher to Blair to Cameron, London has become the financial centre for the world’s dirty money. A third of all the trillions hiding offshore are sitting in tax havens linked to the UK , according to Oxfam. These havens rely on Britain for security and protection. The Jersey pound note features the Queen. On the Caymans, they sing as the national anthem God Save the Queen. Yet Whitehall persists in pretending they are autonomous – even though London has overridden them before, on the abolition of capital punishment, say, or the decriminalising of homosexual acts. It will not do so on shady finance, however. The result is that Britain will soon bring in a public register of who ultimately owns the companies listed here – even while its overseas territories won’t. The Caymans and the rest claim that this is because they are home to perfectly legitimate operations – in which case, what have they got to hide? This fudge suits both the City and the havens. The accountancy firms and tax lawyers and wealth managers in London will continue to reap fat fees by using their branch offices scattered across offshore Britain to look after clients seeking low tax and secrecy – even while the UK can claim that its domestic financial industry is as clean as can be. Few will call this corruption or hypocrisy, as it wears a sharp suit and talks so nicely. In Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Cecily implores Gwendolen: “This is no time for wearing the shallow mask of manners. When I see a spade I call it a spade.” The reply comes: “I am glad to say that I have never seen a spade. It is obvious that our social spheres have been widely different.” |

Senior Special Assistant to the president on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, said in a statement yesterday that Buhari expressed satisfaction with the outcome of his visit to china He said the president believed that the several agreements concluded with the Chinese during the visit would have a huge and positive impact on key sectors Nigeria’s economy like power, solid minerals, agriculture, housing and rail transportation. “In the power sector, North South Power Company Ltd and Sinohydro Corporation Ltd signed an agreement valued at $478,657,941.28 for the construction of 300 megawatts solar power in Shiriro, Niger State,” the presidential spokesman stated. He said in the solid minerals sector, Granite and Marble Nigeria Ltd and Shanghai Shibang signed an agreement valued at $55 million for the construction and equipping of granite mining plant in Nigeria. About $1 billion will be invested in the development of a Greenfield expressway for Abuja-Ibadan-Lagos under an agreement reached by the Infrastructure Bank and Sinohydro Corporation Ltd, Shehu said. “For the housing sector, both companies also sealed a $250 million deal to develop an ultra-modern 27-storey high rise complex and a $2.5 billion agreement for the development of the Lagos Metro Rail Transit Red Line project,” he stated. “Other agreements announced and signed during the visit include a $1 billion for the establishment of a hi-tech industrial park in Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone in Igbesa, Ogun State. “Furthermore, the Ogun-Guangdong Free Trade Zone and CNG (Nigeria) Investment Ltd also signed an agreement valued at $200 million for the construction of two 500MT/day float gas facilities. “An agreement valued at $363 million for the establishment of a comprehensive farm and downstream industrial park in Kogi State was also announced at the Nigeria-China business forum. “Other agreements undergoing negotiations include a $500 million project for the provision of television broadcast equipment and a $25 million facility for production of pre-paid smart meters between Mojec International Limited and Microstar Company Ltd,” the presidential aide said He added that about 100 Nigerian businesses and 300 Chinese firms participated in the Nigeria-China business forum which took place a day after President Buhari began his visit to China. |
