Religion / How Pastor Adeboye Announced Retirement Before Osinbajo, Other Pastors by UtakoCrescent: 4:10pm On Jan 07, 2017
Pastor Enoch Adeboye announced his decision to step down as the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), on Saturday during the Annual Minister’s Thanksgiving at Shimawa area of Ogun State, Daily Trust gathered.

The respected cleric who took over the leadership of the church in 1981 made the announcement in the presence of the Vice-president, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, who was one of the senior pastors in attendance.

Pastor Adeboye urged the ministers and the entire church to pray and work together with the new General Overseer, Pastor Joseph Obayemi.

The former lecturer and Professor of Mathematics is still expected to provide spiritual leadership for the church.

Pastor Adeboye had his B.Sc. in Mathematics at University of Nigeria Nsukka and subsequently got his PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Lagos, and worked as a lecturer in mathematics at the universities of Lagos and Ilorin; After joining the RCCG in 1973, he began working to translate the sermons of its then Pastor and founder, Rev. Josiah Olufemi Akindayomi, from Yoruba into English.

In 1981, Pastor Adeboye was appointed General Overseer of the church, taking over from Papa Akindayomi, who had died the previous year. For three years he filled the role part-time, still lecturing at Ilorin, until giving up his university position to preach full-time.

Pastor Joseph.O. Obayemi who was a deputy in charge of Finance and a member of governing council has been named his successor.

The newly announced General Overseer of the RCCG in a sermon published by the church magazine, Redemption Light noted that except the Lord builds a life, family, business or ministry, His creation can do nothing.

He enjoined the congregation to trust God for all things because, ‘’when the King of glory comes into any situation, the story of such people changes".

"God can resurrect a dead life, dead situations and restore lost glory," he said in a sermon in August 2015 during the dedication of eight church buildings in Province 10. He was then the pastor of the province and represented the immediate past GO, Pastor Adeboye at the event.

Nairaland / General / Full Gist Of Graduate Selling Akara In Abuja by UtakoCrescent: 4:25pm On Mar 07, 2016
DAILY TRUST: Meet graduate who prefers frying, selling Akara to white-collar job
It started like a joke, that is, a joke to the gentlemen.

Chinenye Sarah-Mary Odili was throwing enquiries at the Zangon Daura estate roundabout in Kado, Abuja. She looked dapper in a suit; her physique was cute; and she spoke Queen’s English. So it must have been a joke that she would be asking for space-where she could settle down to fry Akara (bean cake) for sale.

One day in January last year, Chinenye had left home with N3,000, chartered a Keke NAPEP and instructed the driver to driver her round some areas of Abuja metropolis. Her mission: scouting for a vantage location to start a trade, selling Akara.

Selling Akara? The gentlemen she approached would have been more bewildered if they had known right away that the figure before them was an accountancy graduate of the University of Abuja. Her appearance gave away substance-of sorts.

Your average Akara seller is not considered well educated or even literate. The stereotype is that of a woman, at best a secondary school dropout, without hope of landing a high-paying office job, without the finance and intellect to start a meaning small-scale business.

Intending entrepreneurs will first conclude selling Akara is dirty and degrading than ever consider its promise of profits. So this lady uttering impeccable English can only be a joke. But 26-year-old Chinenye is not. It was a career aberration, but she had it all figured out.

From 2010, the Anambra State indigene swotted for her accountancy degree, with time to spare for extracurricular activism. She was vice-president of the National Association of Anambra Students, director-general of the Nigerian Federation of Catholic Students and then a chapter vice-president before graduating in 2014.

After graduation, Chinenye, naturally hyperactive, began to dread life of boredom at home before youth service in 2015.

“When I finished my project, I felt I could not just stay at home doing nothing while I waited for my youth service to start. I could not really get full-time employment without the NYSC certificate, and November 2015 seemed too far away. I could not wait that long doing nothing,” she told Daily Trust.

She was unsure exactly what she wanted to do, but she knew she had to do something.

Zainab who lured hundreds of youth with a car and house offer last Wednesday was admitted on Sunday at the hospital.
Last week Tuesday, she announced on a local radio station, her intention to offer a gift of car to anybody who would marry her.
In a telephone interview, the head of the hospital, Malam Abubakar Ibrahim confirmed the admission of the lady, saying she has been their patient for long.

“Yes she is on admission in our hospital but this is not the first time she would be brought here. She has been an outpatient for long but she was brought here at the weekend,” he said.

One of her relatives (name withheld) said she was taken to the hospital because her mental challenge worsened after she picked one of the suitors that thronged to the freedom radio to marry her.

“She was stable until when she was betrayed by somebody who promised to marry her after collecting money from her last year. Since then she developed mental problem and she has been on and off at the psychiatric hospital. “Her condition relapsed at the weekend that was why she was taken to the hospital. If you go there now, you will see her because she is on admission,” he said.

Our correspondent gathered from one of her neighbours in Ayagi area of Kano state that the person that jilted her has been sued to court. “The guy’s parents live in Gandun Albasa area of Kano. When he was taken to court, he promise to be paying N50,000 monthly to refund her money,” he said.

He added that “we grew up with her and she was not having mental challenge until when the guy betrayed her. I used to be accompanying her to the guy’s parents house,” Jazuli Rabiu said.

When contacted on phone, her father hissed and put off his phone.
