Politics / Re: Flooding: White Man Paddling His Canoe In Victoria Island, Lagos (Video, Photos) by Uvo11: 6:32pm On Jul 08, 2017
This is not just a drainage issue. I live in an estate in lekki-ajah axis with excellent drainage and for the first time in 8 years, we have had water gathered in the premises for over 5 days; not up to ankle length and not all over the place, but a strange sight all the same. The lagoon is at our back and the drains empty into it and a nearby canal. Thanks to 8 days of rain, most of it very heavy, there's no where for the water to go to; the ground is saturated, the canal and the lagoon are at a high level.

It's the same scenario in my small farm further down the lekki axis. The ground is saturated; water fills the imprint of your feet when you step on the ground.

I think the problem we have in Lagos goes beyond drainage. Lekki, Ikoyi, VI are all low lying areas with high water tables. So, with the extended, heavy rains that we have experienced recently flooding is inevitable.

Agriculture / Re: Pls, Can I Cover A Greenhouse With Ordinary Thick Polythene by Uvo11: 11:12am On Jul 08, 2017
1. You can use thick transparent polyethylene sheet for the roof, however, since it is not designed for that purpose it will last only a few months. The UV rays of the sun will quickly damage it.

2. Since you are building a cheap, passive ventilated greenhouse, use mosquito netting for all the sides. You could however, choose to use polyethylene sheet for the bottom 1 foot of the walls.

Finally, use free resources online. Search for examples of cheap, tropical greenhouses. You'll get a lot of good ideas to work with.

Hope this helps.

Agriculture / Re: My Successful Cucumber Sack Farm In Kaduna by Uvo11: 12:07pm On Jun 18, 2017
Good job, vanpeele; very good job. I did sack farming from 2014 to 2015. It was interesting and challenging as well. Going through your thread has shown me what I can improve on. I will take another stab at it now. Thank you very much for sharing. God bless you.

I look forward to seeing posts on the other crops that you are growing now.

Agriculture / Re: Top 17 Lucrative Farming Ventures In Nigeria & Africa In Order Of Significance by Uvo11: 4:57pm On Jun 10, 2017
Interesting article. I do have some concerns though.

1. Most of us in this part of the world are lactose intolerant. One of the best things l did was to stop taking dairy products (fresh and processed). My bloating, milk induced farting stopped. The pains in my joints reduced. Many of our people here are lactose intolerant and suffer from the effects of taking dairy products without knowing that it is the source of their problems. Pastoralists do not face this issue because they have taken dairy for thousands of years and have gut flora that digest milk proteins easily.

2. Beautiful skin is not dependent on milk consumption. All you need is a diet rich in vegetables, fruits, nuts, legumes, healthy oils, meats, and fish. Drink lots of water too. Eat right, exercise, think positive, rest well and you'll be healthy with great skin and hair.

3. Majority of the women that use weaves have bought into the prevailing belief that white hair, features, and light skin are better. So they wear weaves because they want to have 'good' hair instead of their 'bad' kinky, coily hair. You can drink all the milk in the world and your hair will remain kinky and coily. Until we he genuinely start affirming and uplifting our own features, many of our sisters will continue wearing weaves. It's a mind thing, not a milk issue.

Thank you.

Fashion / Re: White Lady Darkens Her Skin, Now Black (Photos) by Uvo11: 9:39am On Apr 14, 2017
A number of the comments show how self-hating and anti-black many Nigerians are. We need to emancipate ourselves from mental slavery.

I laugh when I see commenters going cray cray over how beautiful featured photos of lightskinned and white people are, because most often than not most of those photos show people with plain to ugly features. But light skin covers a multitude of sins; and since we are socialised to worship white skin, we just see beauty in anything light.

This lady illustrates what I usually tell people; oyinbos are not fine. Give them dark black skin and see what they look like then.

As for all you self-hating, anti-black people here, may God help you.
Health / Re: Bleaching: Nigeria Tops List Of African Countries Whose Women Bleach Their Skin by Uvo11: 7:44am On Mar 23, 2017
Please, take these stats with a teaspoon (not pinch) of salt. We all have eyes; how many light skinned women do you see in your family, school, street, church, office and so on? According to these stats, almost 8 out of every 10 Nigerian women bleach, and that is not true. There are way, way more dark skinned women walking on the streets of Nigeria than there are light (natural and bleached combined).

So, my question is, when and how did the UN carry out this survey? How did they determine and take their sample size? The stat is seriously inaccurate and thus, their study method was obviously flawed.

The bulk of the comments I read on Nairaland (and other Nigerian sites) give me cause for concern. They show that most of us do not analyse the information we receive and cannot be bothered to think and write critically.
Religion / Re: Medical Doctors, Atheism and Daily Evidence of Failed Prayers. by Uvo11: 5:23pm On Feb 13, 2017
I understand the op's situation. I had a close relation die from cancer after so much prayer. He suffered a lot and I was really mad at God for quite a while.

It's been a challenging journey and now my relationship with God is stronger than it ever was before.

What I have come to know for real is that God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts not our thoughts. We can never comprehend why He answers some prayers and does not answer others. He is like a parent and we are as toddlers who just want what we want. Just like a good parent does what is in the best interest of the child and decides which of the things the toddler desires that he can actually have, so God does for us.

God has a view of creation and time that we don't have. He sees how the past, present and future are interconnected. He sees how each individual life fits into all of this, and what the best move is at any point in time.

It is difficult to accept this at times but God takes His decisions based on factors that are a million light years beyond our grasp. I am, however, comforted by the fact that His love for me (and all of mankind) is so strong that He gave His only begotten son, Jesus Christ, to die for our sins. His word also assures all believers that all He does is for our eternal good.

Op, I pray that you will find your way back home to the arms of our loving heavenly father eventually, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen

Cotton
Maize
Millet
Gum Arabic
Sesame Seeds
Sorghum
Beans
Groundnut
Vegetables
Tomatoes
Tiger Nut
Ginger
and Many more

There is probably no vegetable and grain on this list that can't be grown in the south. E.g. I tested sesame on my small farm in lekki and it did very well. It's all a question of attitude and cultural orientation, I think.

TV/Movies / Re: Big Brother Naija: Lai Mohammed Directs NBC To Investigate Location Controversy by Uvo11: 8:36am On Jan 25, 2017
The minister is right to look into this. By shooting big brother in SA, multichoice took away jobs/contracts that would have been done by Nigerians. These include production, post-production, catering, logistics, security, cleaning, and other jobs/contracts.

When you take into consideration the number if shows, adverts, music videos primarily targeted at the Nigerian audience that are shot in SA, Kenya, etc. and the number of jobs/contracts we lose as a result, you'll probably understand why the minister's action is right. And please, don't tell me about production quality; if these companies and artistes had any real interest in shooting in Nigeria, they'd do what they do so easily in SA and Kenya- build local capacity.

And don't tell me it's their business where they shoot. Nigeria is a big market for most of these folks; we should not sit back while benefits that should come to us are ploughed elsewhere.
Agriculture / Re: Own A Plantain/banana Plantation Without Lifting A Finger by Uvo11: 9:05pm On Jan 05, 2017
Hello. Good initiative. I do think though that you should have either written the introductory section yourself or excised it from a Nigeria focused document. The Florida references are not on at all, especially when you take into consideration the fact that we produce more plantain than they do.

I would have loved to see more detailed information upfront; the sort of that would enable someone like me take an informed decision. For instance:

1. A brief profile of your company including a physical location and website (if you have one); successful plantain projects that you have previously executed; any other relevant info.

2. The project.
(a) ownership of the 500 acres you are using for the project; is it yours or are you going to lease from the owners? If you are leasing from someone else, what is the guarantee that they would not renege on the agreement once the plantation takes shape?
(b) projected cost to subscribers for 1 acre of plantain plantation from inception to completion of first set of sales. And number of years the farm is expected to last since it's going to be on leased land.
(c) location of the land.

I expect that information on the above is the barest minimum that should be provided by you.

Please, consider taking a look at similar offers that have been made by some other people / organisations on Nairaland. You could pick up a thing or two from them to help you package your proposal better.

All the best!
