The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) heartily congratulates three outstanding young scholars from the South-East of Nigeria, Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan, and Don Anele Munachimso, for their exceptional performance at the International STEM Olympiad Grand Finale held in Rome, Italy, where they won multiple gold medals and brought immense honour to Nigeria and the South-East region. The remarkable achievements of these brilliant students have once again demonstrated that the South-East remains Nigeria's foremost hub of academic excellence, innovation, and intellectual achievement. Their success on the global stage is not only a personal milestone but also a testament to the immense talent, resilience, and potential that abound among young people in the region. FOSAD is particularly delighted that Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan emerged as the World's Best in Primary Mathematics, winning the gold medal in the Primary Category. We equally celebrate Don Anele Munachimso, who recorded an extraordinary double victory by winning Gold in Mathematics and Gold in Science in the Senior Secondary Category. We also commend Chimdiebube Onwubiko, whose outstanding performance earned him Gold in Mathematics and Silver in Science in the Junior Secondary Category. Competing against participants from more than fifty countries with advanced educational systems, these young Nigerians proved that excellence knows no geographical boundaries when talent is properly nurtured and supported. The Forum also commends Mr. Alex Onyia, Chief Executive Officer of Educare, whose visionary leadership, unwavering commitment, and personal sponsorship made Nigeria's participation in the competition possible. At a time when funding challenges continue to limit Nigeria's participation in several international academic competitions, Mr. Onyia's patriotic investment in gifted education has demonstrated the transformative impact of private-sector support for educational development. FOSAD also applauds the teachers, parents, schools, and mentors of these exceptional students for their dedication, sacrifices, and commitment to nurturing excellence. Their collective efforts have yielded results that have inspired millions of Nigerians and restored confidence in the country's abundant intellectual capacity. These remarkable young scholars are not merely medal winners; they are true Heroes of the South-East. They embody the values of discipline, hard work, innovation, perseverance, and academic excellence that our region has always been known for. Their achievements should inspire governments, educational institutions, private organizations, and development partners to invest more deliberately in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. FOSAD reiterates its longstanding position that sustainable regional development can only be achieved through quality education, research, innovation, and technological advancement. The outstanding performance of these students reinforces the central message of the recently concluded FOSAD International Conference Ebonyi 2026, which emphasized the importance of education as the foundation for the sustainable development of the South-East and Nigeria. We therefore call on the Federal Government, the South-East Governors, the South East Development Commission (SEDC), corporate organizations, and well-meaning Nigerians to recognize and reward these exceptional students and to institutionalize mechanisms that identify, nurture, and support gifted children across the country. Their success should become a catalyst for renewed investment in STEM education, innovation hubs, mathematics competitions, science laboratories, teacher development, and educational research. FOSAD believes that with sustained support for talented young Nigerians, the country can once again occupy its rightful place among the world's leading nations in science, technology, research, and innovation. Once again, we congratulate Chimdiebube Onwubiko, Egejurum Onyedikachi Ethan, Don Anele Munachimso, their teachers, parents, and Mr. Alex Onyia for this historic accomplishment. You have made Nigeria proud, inspired a generation of young learners, and reaffirmed that the South-East remains a beacon of academic excellence. Your achievements will forever be remembered as a defining moment in Nigeria's educational history. FOSAD International Conference Calls for Coordinated Action to Reposition South-East Through Education, Agriculture, Health and Technology The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has concluded its 2026 International Conference with a call for coordinated regional action aimed at accelerating sustainable development across the South-East through strategic investments in education, agriculture, healthcare and technological innovation. The two-day conference, held on 2 and 3 July 2026, brought together PhD holders, researchers, academics, policymakers and development experts from the five South-East states to deliberate on the theme: "Reinvigorating South-East Nigeria Development through Sustainable Education, Agriculture, Health, and Technological Advancement." The State Chapter election of FOSAD also took place during the conference and the following state chairman emerged: Abia – Dr Kelechi Nwosu Anambra – Dr Chidi Okoye Ebonyi – Dr Clement Amagu Enugu – Dr Blessing Agbo Imo – Glory Ifeyinwa Ibeawuchi Participants examined critical development challenges confronting the region and adopted a 10-point communiqué outlining practical policy recommendations designed to promote inclusive economic growth, strengthen educational institutions, modernize agriculture, improve healthcare delivery and accelerate technological advancement. Delivering the keynote address, the Chief Executive Officer of Educare, Mr. Alex Onyia, described human capital as Nigeria's most valuable resource, arguing that sustainable national development depends primarily on investing in education rather than relying on natural resources. According to him, "The greatest asset Nigeria has is not oil; the greatest asset Nigeria has is its people." He observed that countries that deliberately invested in education and human capital had achieved remarkable developmental progress, citing Singapore as an example of a nation that transformed itself through sustained educational reforms and strategic investment in knowledge. "Singapore of today is better than the Singapore of yesterday, whereas Nigeria of yesterday is better than Nigeria of today," he remarked. Onyia stressed that the South-East possesses a long-standing educational tradition capable of positioning the region as a continental leader in knowledge production and innovation if properly harnessed. "The mind is an endless source of wealth. The South-East believes in education, and if we fully capitalize on this comparative advantage, no region in Africa will surpass us." He further argued that education remains the most effective pathway for positioning the region competitively in the era of Artificial Intelligence and the global knowledge economy. According to him, universities across the South-East must prioritise quality assurance and eliminate corruption within higher education institutions to restore public confidence in the value of academic qualifications. "We must decisively confront corruption in our universities so that the quality of our graduates will improve. If we solve the problem of education, we will have solved the majority of our developmental challenges." Drawing from his experience coordinating national academic competitions, Onyia noted that Ebonyi State had recorded significant improvements in educational outcomes, describing the state as one of the leading performers in recent academic Olympiads. He expressed optimism that the South-East would emerge as one of Nigeria's strongest educational regions within the next decade if current investments in learning continued. He also encouraged leading private educational institutions to undertake corporate social responsibility initiatives by supporting less-privileged schools through teacher training, mentorship programmes and the provision of instructional equipment. In addition, he advocated comprehensive curriculum reforms that would place greater emphasis on practical learning, innovation and problem-solving rather than excessive dependence on theoretical instruction. Presenting the lead paper at the conference, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Ebonyi State University, Professor Ike-Elechi Ogba, called on FOSAD to move beyond annual academic engagements by developing a comprehensive development blueprint for both the South-East and Nigeria. According to him, the region possesses exceptional human resources whose entrepreneurial achievements have significantly contributed to Nigeria's economic development. Professor Ogba observed that the South-East has consistently produced outstanding entrepreneurs, industrialists, academics and technology innovators whose contributions extend across Nigeria and the global economy. He argued that the economic influence of Igbo entrepreneurs across major commercial centres demonstrates the enormous developmental capacity of the region. "Remove Igbos from Lagos, Northern Nigeria, the United Kingdom, South Africa and the United States, and the economies of those places would feel the impact," he stated. Drawing lessons from the developmental experience of South Korea, Professor Ogba encouraged young scholars to emulate countries that deliberately acquired global knowledge before returning home to build their societies. He therefore appealed to successful Igbo business leaders to invest substantially in educational institutions across the South-East as part of their contribution to regional development. He described FOSAD as "the crème de la crème of education in the South-East" and urged members to provide intellectual leadership on issues affecting the region. Professor Ogba also advocated the establishment of specialised Igbo Research Centres within universities across the South-East to promote research, preserve cultural heritage and develop policy solutions tailored to regional realities. He further advised academics to maintain humility and professionalism while engaging public office holders. "Political office holders sometimes feel intimidated by PhD holders. We must carry ourselves with grace because we possess knowledge that should be used to serve society." Earlier in his welcome address, the President of FOSAD, Dr. Stephen Nwala, stated that the South-East possesses abundant talent, resilience and entrepreneurial capacity but requires coordinated and sustainable systems to unlock its full developmental potential. He identified education, agriculture, healthcare and technological advancement as the four strategic pillars capable of transforming the region over the coming decades. Speaking on education, Dr. Nwala said the region must shift its emphasis from certificate acquisition to competence development by investing in vocational education, digital literacy, innovation and research capable of addressing local challenges. According to him, educational institutions must prioritise the production of innovators, entrepreneurs and critical thinkers who will drive sustainable development over the next fifty years. On agriculture, he noted that despite the South-East's fertile land and hardworking farming population, the region continues to import products that could easily be cultivated and processed locally. He therefore called for the modernisation of agriculture through climate-smart farming, improved access to finance, storage infrastructure and agro-processing value chains capable of retaining wealth within local communities. Dr. Nwala further stressed that agriculture should be repositioned as a profitable business venture capable of attracting educated young people rather than being viewed merely as a subsistence occupation. Addressing healthcare, he argued that no economy can achieve sustainable growth without a healthy population. He therefore advocated increased investment in primary healthcare, maternal and child health services, mental healthcare and digital health technologies capable of improving healthcare delivery across rural communities. He equally described technological advancement as the principal accelerator of regional development. According to him, innovation has the capacity to reduce production costs, expand economic opportunities and create entirely new industries in agriculture, healthcare, manufacturing and financial technology. He called for increased investment in digital infrastructure, innovation ecosystems and policies that would enable young people to become creators rather than consumers of technology. Dr. Nwala further emphasised that education, agriculture, health and technology must not be treated as isolated sectors but should function as integrated components of a comprehensive regional development strategy. He urged stronger collaboration among academics, governments, private sector leaders and development partners to translate research into practical policies capable of transforming the South-East. At the conclusion of the conference, participants adopted a comprehensive communiqué containing key recommendations for regional development. Among the resolutions, FOSAD resolved to champion the establishment of Igbo Research Centres in universities and other higher institutions across the South-East to promote indigenous scholarship, innovation and cultural preservation. The conference also called on the Federal Government to prioritise the approval, funding and construction of a deep seaport in the South-East as part of Nigeria's long-term maritime and economic development strategy. Participants urged the South-East Development Commission (SEDC) to make seaport development one of its flagship regional infrastructure projects while encouraging the five South-East state governments to establish a joint regional investment framework to support land acquisition, transport infrastructure, rail connectivity and complementary facilities. The communiqué further recommended that state governments prioritise energy infrastructure for rural agro-processing zones to enhance agricultural productivity and industrial development. Participants also advocated the integration of mental health services into primary healthcare systems across the region while promoting greater economic inclusion for persons living with disabilities. The conference recommended that technical education programmes should leverage existing industries, including the Nnewi Industrial Cluster and small-scale enterprises, as practical training centres for youth entrepreneurship and wealth creation. It also called on Ministries of Education in the South-East to institutionalize play-based creative pedagogy through teacher training and curriculum reform. In the area of agriculture, participants encouraged greater adoption of innovative farming techniques, including sack farming, increased use of organic livestock feeds and other indigenous agricultural practices to enhance food security and reduce dependence on genetically modified food products. Finally, the conference resolved that healthcare systems across the South-East should be repositioned through strategic management reforms aimed at improving service delivery, accessibility and efficiency. The communiqué was signed by the Secretary-General of the Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD), Dr. Uzor Ngoladi, on behalf of the conference.

The House of Representatives candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency, Hon. Francis Barthlomew Chima, popularly known as OmoBarca, on Saturday 27th June 2026 received a massive reception from women leaders and other women across the constituency during a consultative meeting aimed at strengthening grassroots engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections. The gathering, which attracted hundreds of women from different wards and communities within the constituency, demonstrated what supporters described as growing grassroots acceptance of the NDC candidate despite the recent Federal High Court judgment in Lokoja concerning the registration of the party. The women, who turned out in large numbers, gave OmoBarca and members of his campaign entourage a warm welcome, chanting solidarity songs and expressing confidence in his leadership qualities and vision for the constituency. Addressing the enthusiastic crowd, OmoBarca thanked the women for their overwhelming support, assuring them that the recent legal developments involving the NDC would not diminish the party's determination to provide quality representation and people-oriented leadership. He urged party members and supporters not to be discouraged by the court judgment, expressing confidence that the legal issues would be resolved through the judicial process. According to him, the massive turnout of women at the event demonstrated that the people of Ajeromi-Ifelodun remained committed to the ideals of the Nigeria Democratic Congress and were ready to work for the party's success in the 2027 elections. The women leaders, speaking on behalf of participants, pledged their unwavering support for OmoBarca's candidacy, describing him as a compassionate leader with a long-standing record of identifying with ordinary people. They assured him that women across the constituency would mobilize support at the grassroots to ensure his victory at the polls. In what many described as one of the highlights of the event, OmoBarca unveiled a series of ambitious welfare programmes designed to improve the lives of women, children, and small business owners in Ajeromi-Ifelodun. The House of Representatives hopeful announced that, if elected, he would personally pay the hospital bills of every woman who delivers through Caesarean section CS at the Ajeromi-Ifelodun General Hospital. He said the initiative was intended to reduce the financial burden often associated with maternal healthcare and ensure that no family is denied quality medical care because of economic hardship. According to OmoBarca, access to safe maternal healthcare is a fundamental right, and expectant mothers should not be burdened with overwhelming hospital expenses during childbirth. He further disclosed that his intervention would not be limited to women who undergo Caesarean delivery. The NDC candidate also promised to settle the hospital bills of women who give birth through normal delivery at the Ajeromi-Ifelodun General Hospital. In addition to offsetting their medical expenses, he pledged to present each new mother with a cash gift of ₦100,000 to support the welfare of both mother and child during the critical postnatal period. He explained that the financial support would help young families purchase essential baby items and meet immediate household needs after delivery. OmoBarca said the initiative reflects his commitment to improving maternal and child healthcare while promoting the welfare of women across the constituency. The lawmaker hopeful also announced a major economic empowerment programme targeted at women entrepreneurs operating Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) within Ajeromi-Ifelodun. According to him, women engaged in legitimate businesses would receive grants of ₦250,000 each to expand their enterprises and improve their means of livelihood. He noted that empowering women economically would have a multiplier effect on families and the wider community, as women remain central to household welfare and local economic development. OmoBarca stated that supporting small businesses would create employment opportunities, reduce poverty, and stimulate economic growth across the constituency. Recognizing the importance of education, the NDC candidate also unveiled a programme aimed at supporting pupils in public primary schools. He pledged that every child admitted into the first term of public schools across Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency would receive free school uniforms, school bags, books and other learning materials. According to him, the programme would cover all eligible pupils irrespective of their number, ensuring that no child is denied basic educational materials because of financial constraints. He stressed that education remains one of the most effective tools for breaking the cycle of poverty and pledged to prioritize investments in human capital development if elected into the House of Representatives. OmoBarca said children deserve a conducive learning environment and that providing basic educational materials would encourage school enrolment, improve attendance, and reduce the burden on struggling parents. He assured the gathering that his campaign was built on practical solutions rather than empty promises, adding that every commitment made to the people would be pursued with sincerity and accountability. The women repeatedly applauded the various initiatives, describing them as evidence of OmoBarca's genuine concern for the welfare of ordinary people. Many participants said the proposed interventions in maternal healthcare, education, and small business development directly addressed the pressing needs of families within the constituency.

By Dr. Uzor Ngoladi History has a curious way of reminding societies that words matter. Sometimes, a single statement, whether actually uttered or merely attributed, comes to symbolize an era of political insensitivity and the widening gulf between rulers and the ruled. Few expressions illustrate this better than the famous phrase, "Let them eat cake," popularly attributed to France's Queen Marie Antoinette. Historians have repeatedly demonstrated that there is no credible evidence that the queen ever made the statement. Yet, regardless of its historical authenticity, the phrase has survived because it captures a powerful political truth: when leaders appear detached from the daily struggles of ordinary people, public outrage often finds expression in symbolic narratives. Nigeria may not be on the brink of an eighteenth-century French Revolution, but it is experiencing one of the most severe economic crises in its contemporary history. Millions of Nigerians are grappling with soaring food prices, unprecedented inflation, unemployment, stagnant wages, and declining purchasing power. Families that once belonged to the middle class now struggle to afford basic necessities. Hunger has become a recurring subject in homes, markets, schools, and places of worship. Against this backdrop, First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu's suggestion that Nigerians should embrace small-scale enterprises such as akara business generated significant public debate. To many citizens, the advice sounded practical; to many others, it appeared disconnected from the structural realities confronting the average Nigerian. There is absolutely nothing wrong with selling akara. Indeed, akara vendors across Nigeria contribute significantly to the informal economy. They create employment, provide affordable meals, and sustain countless families. Every honest occupation deserves dignity and respect. No nation develops by despising entrepreneurship or productive labour. The issue, therefore, is not akara. The issue is context. When citizens who have lost jobs, graduates who cannot find employment, pensioners who cannot afford medication, and workers whose salaries can no longer sustain their families are told to start frying akara, the message risks being interpreted as an oversimplification of a complex national economic crisis. Leadership communication is as much about empathy as it is about policy. People enduring hardship first want to know that their leaders understand their pain. They want reassurance that government appreciates the magnitude of their suffering and is actively pursuing policies capable of reducing that burden. Advice on personal resilience has its place, but it cannot substitute for comprehensive economic solutions. This is why the symbolic comparison with the "Let them eat cake" narrative resonates with many Nigerians. It is not because the First Lady intended to mock struggling citizens, nor because selling akara is beneath anyone. Rather, it is because both situations, one historical and one contemporary, illustrate how statements from those in positions of privilege can be interpreted as evidence of emotional and political distance from the realities confronting ordinary people. Great leaders understand that perception often becomes political reality. Around the world, history offers numerous examples of governments whose public messaging worsened public frustration. During periods of economic distress, citizens expect leaders to demonstrate compassion, acknowledge sacrifice, and communicate hope grounded in credible action. Words that appear dismissive, however unintentionally, can overshadow even well-meaning initiatives. Nigeria's current economic difficulties require solutions that extend beyond encouraging individual survival strategies. Citizens need policies that stimulate production, revive manufacturing, improve electricity supply, strengthen agriculture, support small and medium-sized enterprises with accessible financing, reduce inflation, stabilize the currency, and create sustainable employment opportunities. Entrepreneurship should certainly be encouraged. In fact, many successful Nigerian businesses began as modest roadside enterprises. But entrepreneurship flourishes best within an enabling environment. It requires affordable credit, stable infrastructure, reliable electricity, functional transportation networks, security, and predictable economic policies. Without these conditions, asking millions of people to become entrepreneurs merely transfers the burden of economic management from the state to individuals. Government cannot outsource its constitutional responsibility for economic development. The conversation should therefore not be about whether Nigerians should sell akara. Those who choose that path deserve encouragement and support. Rather, the national conversation should focus on why university graduates, skilled professionals, and experienced workers increasingly find themselves with limited options beyond subsistence trading. That represents a structural challenge demanding structural responses. Political leadership carries enormous symbolic weight. Every public statement by those occupying high office is scrutinized through the lived experiences of citizens. A comment intended as encouragement may be received as indifference if it fails to reflect prevailing realities. This is perhaps the enduring lesson behind the Marie Antoinette story. Whether or not she ever uttered the infamous words matters less than why generations believed she could have said them. The phrase endured because it reflected widespread perceptions of aristocratic detachment from popular suffering. Modern democratic leaders should learn from that lesson. In difficult times, citizens seek more than advice; they seek understanding. They desire leaders who speak with empathy before prescription, who acknowledge hardship before offering solutions, and who demonstrate through policy that government remains responsive to the needs of the people. Nigeria's greatest challenge today is not a shortage of hardworking citizens. Nigerians have consistently demonstrated resilience, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit despite overwhelming obstacles. What they need most is not simply another reminder to hustle harder. They need an economy that rewards honest labour, a government that creates opportunities rather than merely recommending survival strategies, and leadership that inspires confidence through both words and action. History teaches that nations prosper not when leaders tell hungry people what to eat or what to sell, but when they create conditions in which citizens can eat, work, build businesses, and live with dignity. That is the true responsibility of leadership. And it remains the surest path to lasting national progress. The Amuwo Odofin Constituency II candidate further commended emergency workers and volunteers already on the ground for their commitment and courage in responding to the disaster, describing their efforts as invaluable during a critical moment. TVO. stressed the need for a thorough investigation into the cause of the collapse to prevent future occurrences, noting that building failures continue to pose serious threats to lives and property across the state. He called on relevant regulatory agencies to strengthen monitoring and enforcement of building standards, emphasizing that adherence to safety regulations remains essential in safeguarding residents and preventing avoidable tragedies. As we mourn with the affected families, it is important that all necessary steps are taken to determine the cause of this collapse and ensure accountability where necessary. We must collectively work towards preventing such incidents from recurring, he said. The politician urged residents of the area to cooperate with rescue teams and remain vigilant while emergency operations continue. He also called on members of the public to support affected families through prayers and any humanitarian assistance that may be required in the aftermath of the tragedy. The collapse of the building at Alakija, Navy Town, has drawn widespread concern among residents and stakeholders, with rescue efforts ongoing as authorities continue to search for survivors and assess the extent of the damage. Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko reaffirmed his solidarity with the victims and their families, assuring them that the entire Amuwo Odofin community stands with them during this difficult period and shares in their grief.

PRESS STATEMENT N16.6 billion: FOSAD Demands Accountability, Transparency from South East Development Commission (SEDC) Managing Director, Mark Okoye The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has called on the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), Mr. Mark Okoye, to provide a comprehensive public account of the estimated ₦16.6 billion reportedly released to the Commission since its inauguration by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in February 2025. As an organization committed to good governance, accountability, transparency, and sustainable development, FOSAD is deeply disturbed by recent developments surrounding the activities of the South East Development Commission, particularly the ongoing scrutiny by the Nigerian Senate over the Commission's financial expenditures. Most disturbing among the allegations is the reported payment of ₦153 million for the rent of a one-bedroom liaison office in Abuja. Such a revelation, if accurate, raises serious questions about financial prudence, fiscal responsibility, and the management of public resources entrusted to the Commission for the development of the South-East geopolitical zone. The South East Development Commission was established to address decades of infrastructural neglect, stimulate economic growth, rebuild communities, and accelerate development across the five South-East states. The expectations of millions of people in the region were understandably high following the establishment of the Commission. Unfortunately, more than a year after its inauguration, the region is yet to witness commensurate developmental projects that justify the huge financial allocations reportedly made to the Commission. FOSAD considers the current controversy an embarrassment to the South-East geopolitical zone and an unfortunate distraction from the noble objectives for which the Commission was created. At a time when Nigerians are demanding greater accountability from public institutions, it is imperative that the leadership of the SEDC demonstrates the highest standards of integrity and openness. We therefore call on Mr. Mark Okoye and the entire management of the Commission to immediately provide a detailed breakdown of all funds received and expended since the Commission became operational. The people of the South-East deserve to know how public resources allocated for their development have been utilized. Transparency is not optional in public service; it is a constitutional and moral obligation. Public confidence can only be restored when public officials willingly subject themselves to scrutiny and provide verifiable evidence that public funds have been deployed for the benefit of the people. FOSAD further insists that this matter must not be swept under the carpet. Nigeria cannot successfully wage the war against corruption while overlooking allegations of financial impropriety in institutions established to promote development. Accountability must not be selective. We also note that Mr. Mark Okoye belongs to a younger generation of Nigerian leaders who have consistently advocated for greater youth participation in governance. It is therefore important that he conducts himself in a manner that strengthens public confidence in young leaders rather than reinforcing negative stereotypes that could undermine future opportunities for competent young Nigerians seeking leadership positions. Furthermore, FOSAD calls on the Governors of Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States, as principal stakeholders in the South East Development Commission, to intervene by demanding a transparent, independent, and comprehensive inquiry into the financial activities of the Commission. The National Assembly, anti-corruption agencies, civil society organizations and development partners should equally ensure that due process is followed and that investigation is conducted without fear or favour. The South-East cannot afford another institution that fails to deliver on its mandate. The region urgently needs quality roads, modern healthcare facilities, educational infrastructure, industrial development, youth empowerment programmes, agricultural investments, and employment opportunities—not financial controversies that erode public trust. FOSAD remains committed to promoting accountability, evidence-based governance, and responsible leadership. We shall continue to monitor developments at the South East Development Commission and speak out whenever the public interest demands it. The people of the South-East deserve transparency. They deserve development. Above all, they deserve leaders who recognize that public office is a sacred trust. As Nigeria marks another Democracy Day on June 12, House of Representatives aspirant for Ajeromi–Ifelodun Federal Constituency, Hon. Francis Barthlomew Chima, popularly known as OmoBarca, has extended warm greetings to his constituents and Nigerians at large, calling for renewed commitment to democratic values and national development. In his message commemorating the historic date, OmoBarca described June 12 as a symbol of Nigeria’s long struggle for electoral justice, civil liberty, and popular participation in governance, stressing that the day remains one of the most defining moments in the country’s political evolution. He urged residents of Ajeromi–Ifelodun and Nigerians across the federation to remain hopeful and steadfast in the democratic journey, noting that despite existing socio-economic challenges, the country has made significant progress since the return to civilian rule in 1999. According to him, Nigeria’s uninterrupted democratic experience over the past 27 years represents a milestone that should not be taken for granted, particularly when viewed against the backdrop of prolonged military rule in the nation’s history. He noted that while the democratic system is still evolving and requires continuous improvement, it has nonetheless created space for civic participation, freedom of expression, and competitive elections that allow citizens to choose their leaders. “Democracy is not a destination but a process,” he said, emphasizing that the strength of any democratic system lies in the willingness of the people to remain engaged and demand accountability from those in power. OmoBarca encouraged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country’s democratic institutions, urging citizens to continue to believe in the possibility of a better and more prosperous nation. He acknowledged the economic pressures facing many households, particularly in urban constituencies like Ajeromi–Ifelodun, but maintained that sustained democratic governance remains the most viable pathway to long-term stability and development. He further called on political leaders at all levels to prioritize policies that directly improve the welfare of citizens, especially in areas such as education, employment, healthcare, and infrastructure. Reaffirming his connection with the people of Ajeromi–Ifelodun, OmoBarca pledged to continue engaging with community stakeholders, youth groups, and market associations in the constituency as part of his broader vision for inclusive representation. He stated that the essence of democratic participation is service to the people, adding that leadership must always reflect responsiveness to the needs and aspirations of the electorate. According to him, “The people remain the foundation of democracy, and their voices must continue to guide governance at every level.” June 12, officially recognized as Nigeria’s Democracy Day, commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election widely regarded as one of the freest and fairest in the country’s history. The date has since become a national symbol of the struggle for democratic governance and electoral integrity. As Nigerians reflect on the significance of the day, OmoBarca’s message adds to growing calls for deeper reforms and stronger institutions capable of sustaining democratic gains and addressing contemporary challenges. The House of Representatives hopeful concluded by urging Nigerians to remain active participants in the democratic process, especially as the nation continues to navigate economic reforms, governance reforms, and political transitions. He reaffirmed his belief that with unity, patience, and collective responsibility, Nigeria can achieve the democratic ideals envisioned by its founding advocates. “Let us keep hope alive and continue to believe in Nigeria,” he said. As the nation celebrates 27 years of uninterrupted democracy, messages such as this underscore both the progress made and the ongoing expectations of citizens who continue to demand a more inclusive, responsive, and accountable governance system.

Lagos, Nigeria – June 12, 2026 The candidate for the Lagos State House of Assembly representing Amuwo-Odofin Constituency under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko, has congratulated the people of Amuwo-Odofin and Nigerians at large on the occasion of the 2026 Democracy Day celebration. In a statement issued on Friday to commemorate the 27th anniversary of uninterrupted democratic governance in Nigeria, Onwubiko called on citizens to remain hopeful and committed to the ideals of democracy despite the numerous challenges confronting the nation. The House of Assembly hopeful described June 12 as a historic day in Nigeria’s political evolution, noting that it symbolizes the resilience of the Nigerian people and their unwavering commitment to democratic values, justice, and good governance. According to him, the sacrifices made by pro-democracy activists and the late Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola should continue to inspire Nigerians to defend democratic institutions and work collectively towards building a more prosperous nation. “Today, we celebrate not only 27 years of uninterrupted democracy but also the courage, sacrifice, and determination of millions of Nigerians who fought tirelessly for the restoration and sustenance of democratic rule in our country,” Onwubiko said. He noted that Democracy Day serves as a reminder of the struggles and sacrifices that paved the way for the democratic freedoms Nigerians currently enjoy. “June 12 remains a defining moment in our national history. It reminds us of the price paid by heroes and heroines of democracy, particularly Chief MKO Abiola, whose unwavering commitment to the democratic aspirations of Nigerians continues to inspire generations,” he stated. Onwubiko urged Nigerians not to lose faith in the country's future despite prevailing economic and social challenges, emphasizing that democracy remains the best platform for achieving national development and social progress. He called on citizens to continue participating actively in the democratic process by holding leaders accountable, promoting peaceful coexistence, and contributing positively to national development. “While our nation continues to face significant challenges, we must not surrender to despair. Democracy thrives when citizens remain engaged, hopeful, and committed to the common good. We must continue to believe in Nigeria and work together to build the country of our dreams,” he said. The NDC candidate stressed that the legacy of Chief MKO Abiola goes beyond politics, describing him as a symbol of sacrifice, courage, and patriotism whose vision for a united and prosperous Nigeria remains relevant today. According to Onwubiko, preserving the legacy of the late democracy icon requires a renewed commitment to transparency, accountability, inclusiveness, and the rule of law. “To truly honour Chief MKO Abiola, we must uphold the values he stood for—justice, fairness, equality, and the protection of the democratic rights of all citizens. His dream was for a Nigeria where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive regardless of ethnic, religious, or political affiliation,” he added. Addressing the people of Amuwo-Odofin Constituency, Onwubiko thanked residents for their continued support and confidence in his vision for the constituency and pledged to champion policies and initiatives that would improve the welfare of the people if elected. He reaffirmed his commitment to quality representation, youth empowerment, infrastructure development, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities for residents of the constituency. “I celebrate the resilient and hardworking people of Amuwo-Odofin on this important occasion. Together, we can build a constituency that reflects the aspirations and dreams of our people. I remain committed to serving with integrity, dedication, and a genuine passion for progress,” he said. The politician also called on young Nigerians to take greater interest in governance and leadership, stressing that the future of the country depends largely on the active participation of its youth population. “As we commemorate Democracy Day, I encourage our young people to remain engaged, informed, and involved in the democratic process. The future belongs to them, and their voices must continue to shape the direction of our nation,” he stated. Onwubiko concluded by wishing Nigerians a peaceful and memorable Democracy Day celebration, expressing optimism that the country would overcome its current challenges and emerge stronger. “Let us keep hope alive and continue to believe in the promise of Nigeria. PRESS STATEMENT FOSAD Reports Tinubu’s Government To Education International Over Abduction Of Teachers And Students In Oyo State, Seeks Urgent Global Intervention The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has formally petitioned Education International (EI), the global federation representing teachers and education workers worldwide, over the continued abduction of teachers and students in Oyo State, Nigeria, and the Federal Government's inability to secure their release more than two weeks after the incident. In a letter addressed to the leadership of Education International, FOSAD strongly condemned the terrorist attack on three schools in Esiele and Yawota communities of Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State on May 15, 2026, during which armed terrorists abducted seven teachers and thirty-nine pupils and students. The academic body described the incident as one of the most disturbing attacks on education in recent Nigerian history and expressed outrage over the brutal beheading of a mathematics teacher, Mr. Michael Oyedokun, during the attack. FOSAD noted that the murder of an educator whose only crime was serving his community represents a direct assault on the teaching profession and the future of Nigerian children. According to FOSAD, the continued captivity of the abducted teachers and students highlights the worsening insecurity facing schools across Nigeria and demonstrates the failure of authorities to provide adequate protection for educational institutions. The organization expressed deep concern that despite widespread public outrage, emotional appeals by family members, and sustained advocacy by education stakeholders, the victims remain in captivity while government efforts have yielded little progress. FOSAD criticized what it described as the Federal Government's lackadaisical response to the crisis, accusing the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of failing to accord education the priority it deserves. "The Nigerian education sector is under siege. Teachers and students have become soft targets for terrorists, kidnappers, and criminal elements. Yet, government response has been grossly inadequate. We are witnessing a dangerous situation where those responsible for shaping the future of our nation are being abandoned to their fate," the organization stated. FOSAD further lamented that teachers across the country continue to work under extremely difficult conditions characterized by poor welfare, insecurity, inadequate infrastructure, and increasing threats to their lives. The group noted that the abduction in Oyo State is part of a disturbing trend of attacks on schools that threatens to reverse decades of progress in educational development and discourage parents from sending their children to school. FOSAD also drew attention to the indefinite strike declared by the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) on June 1, 2026, describing the action as a reflection of the growing frustration and anger within the teaching profession. FOSAD urged Education International to immediately raise the matter before relevant international bodies, including the United Nations, UNESCO, UNICEF, and other global institutions committed to protecting education in conflict and crisis situations. The Forum appealed to Education International to issue a strong global statement condemning the attack and demanding the unconditional release of all abducted teachers and students. "We call on Education International to stand in solidarity with Nigerian teachers and learners. The international community cannot remain silent while teachers are murdered, students are abducted, and schools become battlefields. An attack on teachers anywhere is an attack on teachers everywhere," FOSAD stated. The group further expressed concern that while government agencies often demonstrate remarkable efficiency in monitoring and tracking political activists and critics of government policies, the same urgency has not been applied in locating and rescuing innocent teachers and schoolchildren held by terrorists. FOSAD warned that unless urgent and decisive action is taken, Nigeria risks witnessing a collapse of confidence in the education system, particularly in rural communities where insecurity has become rampant. "Education may become endangered if teachers and students continue to be exposed to these threats without adequate protection. No society can develop when its classrooms are turned into crime scenes and its teachers become targets of violence," the statement added. FOSAD therefore calls on the Federal Government to intensify rescue operations, strengthen security around schools, prosecute perpetrators of attacks on educational institutions, and implement comprehensive measures to safeguard teachers and learners across the country. FOSAD concluded by expressing hope that international pressure and advocacy would compel authorities to take more decisive action toward ending attacks on schools and ensuring that every child and teacher in Nigeria can learn and work in safety and dignity. Electricity came second with 20.9 percent, while security followed with 14.9 percent. Industrialisation received 11.5 percent of the votes, while railway infrastructure accounted for 6.1 percent. Speaking on the outcome of the exercise, FOSAD noted that the result reflects the growing frustration of people of the South-East over decades of infrastructural neglect, economic marginalisation and the absence of critical federal projects capable of driving regional growth and competitiveness. The group stressed that the absence of a functional seaport in the South-East has continued to hinder commerce, industrial expansion and export opportunities in the region, despite the entrepreneurial strength and commercial viability of the people. FOSAD argued that a viable seaport in the South-East would significantly reduce pressure on existing ports in other parts of the country, lower transportation costs for businesses, facilitate international trade and create thousands of direct and indirect jobs for youths in the region. The forum further observed that the South-East remains one of the few major economic zones in Nigeria without adequate maritime infrastructure, despite its strategic location and contribution to the national economy. On electricity, the academic body maintained that stable power supply is essential for industrialisation, technological advancement and economic productivity. The group lamented that many businesses in the region continue to struggle due to poor electricity supply, forcing entrepreneurs and manufacturers to rely heavily on expensive alternative energy sources. Regarding security, FOSAD stated that insecurity has continued to threaten economic activities, discourage investment and create fear among residents and investors. The group emphasized that sustainable development cannot thrive in an atmosphere of instability and violence. The forum also highlighted the importance of industrialisation and railway infrastructure as critical components of regional transformation, noting that improved rail connectivity and industrial hubs would boost manufacturing, enhance mobility and strengthen regional integration. FOSAD therefore appealed to governors of the South-East states, political leaders, traditional rulers, lawmakers, private sector players and other stakeholders to unite in advancing the developmental interests of the region. The group urged South-East governors to intensify advocacy for the establishment of a functional seaport, improved electricity infrastructure, enhanced security architecture and other strategic projects capable of repositioning the zone economically. FOSAD further called on the Federal Government to ensure equitable distribution of national infrastructure and development projects across all geopolitical zones, insisting that the South-East deserves greater attention in national planning and execution of key economic projects. The forum expressed optimism that with deliberate political will, regional cooperation and sustained advocacy, the South-East can overcome its infrastructural challenges and emerge as a major economic hub in Nigeria and West Africa. FOSAD reaffirmed its commitment to promoting intellectual engagement, policy advocacy and constructive dialogue aimed at advancing the social, economic and political development of the South-East region. OmoBarca 2027: A New Dawn for Ajeromi Ifelodun Federal Constituency As the political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections gradually takes shape, one name continues to resonate strongly across the communities of Ajeromi Ifelodun Federal Constituency in Lagos State Hon. Francis Barthlomew Chima, popularly known as OmoBarca. For many residents, he is not just another politician seeking public office; he is a grassroots leader, philanthropist, and compassionate humanitarian whose impact has already been felt long before seeking elective office. With his aspiration to represent Ajeromi Ifelodun Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), OmoBarca has emerged as a symbol of hope, service, and people-oriented leadership. The message on the streets is loud and clear: “It’s Now or Never.” # A Philanthropist with a Human Face What distinguishes OmoBarca from many contemporary politicians is his long-standing culture of giving and community service. Over the years, he has quietly and consistently touched lives across Ajeromi Ifelodun, earning the admiration of market women, youths, artisans, religious leaders, students, and vulnerable families. For countless indigent students, OmoBarca has become a lifeline through the payment of school fees and educational support. At a time when many families struggle under the harsh economic realities facing Nigeria, his interventions have helped many children remain in school and pursue their dreams. His humanitarian efforts extend beyond education. OmoBarca has catered for the sick and needy, provided financial assistance for medical treatments, and supported struggling families in difficult times. For homeless residents and families facing eviction, he has assisted with house rents, restoring dignity and shelter to many who had lost hope. In a rare display of religious inclusiveness and unity, OmoBarca has also sponsored both Muslims and Christians on holy pilgrimages, demonstrating his belief that leadership must transcend religious and ethnic divisions. His politics is rooted in humanity, compassion, and coexistence. These acts of generosity are not campaign promises; they are already part of his legacy. Aligning with the Vision for a New Nigeria OmoBarca’s political ideology aligns strongly with the progressive vision championed by the National Leader of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Senator Seriake Dickson, whose commitment to good governance, justice, and national development continues to inspire millions of Nigerians. His aspiration also resonates with the reform driven philosophy promoted by Mr. Peter Obi and Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso a vision centered on transforming Nigeria from a consumption driven nation into a productive economy powered by human capital development, industrialization, education, entrepreneurship, and accountable leadership. For OmoBarca, politics is not about personal enrichment or power for its own sake. It is about creating opportunities, empowering the people, and building a constituency where young people can thrive, businesses can grow, and families can live with dignity. This ideological alignment has further strengthened his appeal among youths and progressive-minded voters who are eager for credible representation and practical leadership. A Man of the People Across the length and breadth of Ajeromi Ifelodun, OmoBarca is widely regarded as “a man of the people.” Unlike politicians who only appear during election seasons, he has maintained close ties with the grassroots and understands the everyday challenges confronting ordinary residents. From Ajegunle to Tolu, Layeni to Wilmer, and other communities within the constituency, his presence and interventions have built trust among the people. His ability to connect with the masses has made his 2027 aspiration more than a political project it has become a people’s movement. Supporters believe that OmoBarca represents a departure from politics of empty rhetoric. They see in him a leader who understands the pains of the people because he has consistently stood with them during difficult times. The Promise of Quality Representation If elected into the House of Representatives in Abuja, many believe OmoBarca will bring responsive and effective representation to Ajeromi Ifelodun Federal Constituency. His supporters envision a representative who will prioritize: * Youth empowerment and job creation * Educational development and scholarships * Improved healthcare access * Infrastructure and community development * Economic opportunities for traders and artisans * Security and social welfare * Inclusive governance for all residents At a time when many Nigerians are demanding leaders who are accessible, compassionate, and accountable, OmoBarca’s candidacy appears to embody those expectations. The growing momentum around his aspiration reflects the hunger for transformational leadership within the constituency. 2027: It’s Now or Never The slogan accompanying OmoBarca’s campaign — “It’s Now or Never” captures the mood of many residents who believe the time has come for a new generation of leadership in Ajeromi Ifelodun. For supporters, the 2027 election is not merely about politics; it is about choosing a representative who has already demonstrated commitment to the welfare of the people long before seeking office. As the countdown to the elections begins, Hon. Francis Barthlomew Chima, popularly known as OmoBarca, continues to inspire hope among the people of Ajeromi Ifelodun Federal Constituency. For many residents, his aspiration represents more than a political ambition it represents a movement for service, compassion, development, and a better future. The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) warmly commends the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, for his humane and thoughtful decision to reverse the suspension of the two Ebonyi teachers involved in the recently circulated viral video that generated widespread public concern and debate. As a body committed to the promotion of education, intellectual freedom, professionalism, and social justice, FOSAD considers the governor’s intervention a commendable demonstration of responsive leadership, compassion, and statesmanship. The decision reflects an understanding that disciplinary measures within the education sector should not only uphold standards and accountability but also embrace fairness, empathy, and opportunities for correction and reconciliation. We acknowledge that the incident attracted public attention and raised legitimate concerns regarding conduct within the school system. However, the reversal of the suspension sends a positive message that governance must always balance discipline with humanity. It equally underscores the importance of due process, dialogue, and the protection of the dignity of teachers who continue to serve under difficult conditions across the country. Teachers remain critical stakeholders in national development and deserve institutional support, encouragement, and continuous professional engagement rather than actions that may permanently damage morale and public confidence in the teaching profession. The governor’s decision therefore demonstrates maturity in leadership and a willingness to listen to public opinion and stakeholder concerns. FOSAD also urges education authorities in Ebonyi State and across Nigeria to prioritize teacher welfare, regular training, ethical reorientation, and improved learning environments capable of enhancing professionalism and productivity in schools. Sustainable educational reform cannot be achieved through punitive measures alone but through constructive policies that strengthen both accountability and support systems. We further encourage educators to uphold the highest standards of professional conduct, discipline, and responsibility in the discharge of their duties, recognizing the enormous influence they wield in shaping the character and future of younger generations. The Forum remains committed to supporting policies and initiatives that advance educational excellence, intellectual freedom, and responsible leadership in the South-East and Nigeria at large. PRESS STATEMENT FOSAD Appeals to Governor Nwifuru to Reinstate Suspended Ebonyi Teachers, Upgrade Dilapidated Schools The Forum of South-East Academic Doctors (FOSAD) has called on the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru, to urgently intervene in the suspension of two head teachers accused of being linked to a viral video showing the deplorable state of public school classrooms in Ebonyi State. FOSAD expresses deep concern over reports that the two teachers were suspended indefinitely by the Ebonyi State Ministry of Education following the circulation of a video that exposed the poor learning conditions faced by schoolchildren in parts of the state. The viral footage, which generated widespread reactions across the country, showed pupils receiving lessons in classrooms with unfinished block walls, inadequate furniture and visibly poor infrastructure that many Nigerians described as unfit for effective teaching and learning. According to reports, the affected teachers were accused of misconduct and allegedly blamed for the circulation of the video, which authorities claimed portrayed the state government negatively. In suspension letters dated May 18, 2026 and signed by the Education Secretary of Ezza-North Local Government Area, Mr. Francis Nwonunku, the teachers were directed to immediately hand over all government property in their possession to the next officers in rank. The letters reportedly accused the teachers of “denying pupils their right to quality education” and “sabotaging the effort” of the governor. While FOSAD recognizes the responsibility of educational administrators to uphold professionalism within the school system, we strongly believe that punishing educators for circumstances largely beyond their control sends the wrong signal to teachers, stakeholders and the general public. The Forum respectfully submits that the viral video should not be treated as an embarrassment to be suppressed, but rather as an urgent wake-up call demanding immediate government attention and intervention. The deplorable condition of classrooms where children are learning is not merely a media issue; it is fundamentally a development and educational emergency that deserves constructive action. Instead of suspending the teachers, the government should seize the moment as an opportunity to undertake comprehensive improvements in public school infrastructure across Ebonyi State. We believe that the exposure of poor learning environments can serve as a catalyst for reforms capable of transforming the education sector for the benefit of future generations. Education remains the foundation of social progress, economic advancement and national development. Every child, regardless of social status or geographical location, deserves access to safe, conducive and dignified learning spaces. Teachers, particularly head teachers in rural and underserved communities, often work under extremely difficult conditions with limited resources and inadequate institutional support. In many cases, they become the human shield between struggling pupils and a collapsing educational infrastructure. Holding such individuals solely responsible for systemic deficiencies risks discouraging honesty, transparency and accountability within the education sector. FOSAD therefore appeals to Governor Nwifuru, who has consistently projected himself as a leader committed to education and human capital development, to demonstrate statesmanship and compassion by ordering the immediate reinstatement of the affected teachers. We also urge the Ebonyi State Ministry of Education to engage stakeholders constructively rather than adopting punitive measures against educators who are operating within difficult realities. Educational challenges cannot be solved through intimidation or scapegoating. They require collaboration, transparency, strategic investment and sustained policy commitment. The Forum further calls on the Ebonyi State Government to launch an independent assessment of public-school infrastructure across the state with a view to identifying urgent needs in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, furniture, sanitation and learning materials. Such an exercise would not only restore public confidence but also provide a practical roadmap for meaningful educational reforms. We encourage the government to prioritise the rehabilitation of schools in rural communities where infrastructural deficits remain severe and where many children continue to learn under conditions that compromise both safety and academic performance. The suspension of the two teachers has generated significant public concern because many Nigerians believe the real issue requiring urgent attention is not the existence of the video itself, but the condition of the classrooms shown in the footage. FOSAD therefore respectfully appeals to Governor Nwifuru to use this moment to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to educational development by restoring the suspended teachers and directing immediate intervention in the affected schools. The Forum remains committed to supporting all genuine efforts aimed at improving the quality of education, protecting the dignity of teachers and ensuring that every Nigerian child has access to a conducive learning environment. OmoBarca Attends NDC National Convention, Declares Readiness to Represent Ajeromi-Ifelodun at House of Representatives Hon. Francis Barthlomew Chima, popularly known as OmoBarca, has reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development and quality representation as he attended the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) National Convention alongside party leaders, stakeholders and supporters from across the country. The convention, which attracted thousands of delegates and members of the Obidient and Kwankwasiyya movements, marked a major turning point for the opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections. The event also featured the formal consolidation of political forces around the NDC platform following the involvement of notable political figures across the country. Speaking during the convention, OmoBarca declared his readiness to contest for the House of Representatives seat to represent Ajeromi-Ifelodun Federal Constituency under the platform of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), promising to provide purposeful leadership, youth empowerment and people-oriented representation. According to him, the people of Ajeromi-Ifelodun deserve a representative who understands their daily struggles and is prepared to champion policies that directly improve their living conditions. He stated that his decision to seek elective office was inspired by years of interaction with residents of the constituency and the need to bridge the gap between the people and government. “Ajeromi-Ifelodun deserves effective representation that will prioritize the welfare of the people, create opportunities for the youths and ensure that federal presence is felt across the constituency,” OmoBarca said. He further explained that his political ambition is rooted in service, accountability and community development, stressing that the constituency has enormous human and economic potential that must be harnessed for collective progress. OmoBarca noted that many residents of Ajeromi-Ifelodun continue to face economic hardship, unemployment, poor infrastructure and inadequate social support, adding that these challenges require practical legislative interventions and effective advocacy at the National Assembly. He promised to focus on youth development, education, job creation, skills acquisition, healthcare support and improved infrastructure if elected into office in 2027. According to him, empowering young people remains central to sustainable national development, especially in densely populated communities such as Ajeromi-Ifelodun. “The youths are the strength of our society. We must invest in them through education, vocational training, entrepreneurship support and employment opportunities,” he stated. The businessman and philanthropist also pledged to facilitate federal projects and attract developmental initiatives that would positively impact traders, artisans, students and vulnerable residents within the constituency. He said the NDC platform provides a fresh opportunity to reposition Nigeria and restore public confidence in democratic governance through credible leadership and people-focused policies. OmoBarca commended the leadership of the party for creating an inclusive political platform capable of accommodating Nigerians from different backgrounds and political interests. He also praised the growing alliance involving members of the Obidient and Kwankwasiyya movements, describing it as a sign of national unity and collective determination to rescue Nigeria from poor governance. Political observers at the convention described OmoBarca’s emergence as one of the new grassroots-driven political developments expected to shape electoral contests in Lagos State ahead of 2027. Supporters who attended the convention expressed confidence in his ability to mobilize support across communities within Ajeromi-Ifelodun, citing his longstanding relationship with residents and involvement in humanitarian activities. Several party members noted that his popularity among youths and traders could strengthen the NDC’s chances in the constituency during the next general elections. The convention itself witnessed strong participation from party faithful, political stakeholders, youth groups and civil society actors who gathered to discuss the future of the opposition coalition and strategies for the 2027 elections. Delegates emphasized the need for unity among opposition parties, internal democracy and issue-based campaigns capable of addressing Nigeria’s economic and social challenges. The event also featured speeches by party leaders who called on Nigerians to remain hopeful and actively participate in the democratic process. For many attendees, the convention represented more than a routine political gathering, as it signaled the emergence of a broader political movement aimed at redefining governance and strengthening democratic institutions in the country. OmoBarca used the occasion to engage party supporters and community representatives, assuring them that he would continue consultations across wards and communities in Ajeromi-Ifelodun as preparations for the 2027 elections intensify. He urged residents to remain politically active and support leaders with genuine commitment to service and development. According to him, effective representation must go beyond political promises and translate into measurable improvements in the lives of ordinary people. “As leaders, we must remain accountable to the people at all times. Politics should be about service, sacrifice and solving problems affecting the masses,” he added. With political activities gradually gaining momentum ahead of the next election cycle, OmoBarca’s declaration has added to the growing list of aspirants positioning themselves for legislative contests under emerging political alliances and opposition platforms. Observers believe the coming months will witness increased political realignments, grassroots mobilization and strategic coalition-building as parties prepare for what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 general election.

Maritime expert and political figure, Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko, on Friday joined top leaders and stakeholders of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) at the party’s National Congress held at the Los Angeles Events Centre, Abuja, where the party officially zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria. The congress, which attracted thousands of party faithful, delegates, youth groups and political supporters from across the country, marked a significant moment in the evolving political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Hon. Onwubiko attended the event alongside the Lagos State Chairman of the NDC, Hon King Adekunle Okuneye and other members of the party’s state executive council. His presence at the congress further strengthened speculations about his growing influence within the party and his expanding political engagements in Lagos State, particularly in Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1, where he has continued consultations with grassroots stakeholders ahead of the 2027 elections. The event was attended by several high-profile political leaders, including NDC National Leader, Senator Seriake Dickson, former Labour Party presidential candidate Mr. Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor, Engr. Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso. Also present were members of the Obidient Movement and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, whose supporters filled the venue in large numbers, creating an atmosphere of enthusiasm and renewed opposition coalition politics. The congress witnessed passionate speeches by party leaders who stressed the need for national unity, inclusive governance, economic reforms and a new political direction capable of addressing Nigeria’s mounting social and economic challenges. A major highlight of the congress was the official announcement zoning the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the South, a decision party leaders described as necessary to promote equity, fairness and national balance. Speaking during the gathering, Senator Seriake Dickson said the decision reflected the party’s commitment to justice and power rotation, insisting that the South deserved the opportunity to continue leading the country after years of political imbalance and growing national tensions. According to him, the NDC remains committed to building a broad-based national coalition capable of rescuing Nigeria from insecurity, unemployment, economic hardship and deepening political divisions. Peter Obi, who received loud cheers from supporters at the congress, reiterated the need for competent and accountable leadership, urging Nigerians to remain hopeful despite current economic difficulties. Obi stressed that the 2027 elections would not only be about political parties but about the future survival of Nigeria as a united and prosperous nation. Similarly, Engr. Dr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso called for stronger collaboration among opposition forces, warning that division among progressive political movements could weaken efforts to provide credible alternatives for Nigerians. Observers at the congress noted the increasing political cooperation between the Obidient Movement and the Kwankwasiyya Movement, especially after the recent alignment of key political actors under the NDC platform. Supporters carrying banners, party flags and campaign materials repeatedly chanted solidarity songs as leaders addressed the gathering on the future direction of the party. Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko, while interacting with party supporters at the venue, reaffirmed his commitment to grassroots development, youth empowerment and quality representation. He noted that the congress demonstrated the growing strength of the NDC across the country and expressed confidence that the party would emerge as a major force in the 2027 elections. According to him, Nigerians are increasingly demanding responsive leadership, economic reforms and people-oriented governance. He also commended the leadership of the party for successfully organising what many described as one of the largest opposition political gatherings in recent times. Political analysts believe the congress may signal the beginning of a broader opposition realignment ahead of 2027, particularly with the increasing involvement of influential political blocs and youth-driven movements. The presence of supporters from different regions of the country also reflected growing efforts by the NDC to position itself as a truly national platform capable of attracting politicians, professionals, youths and civil society groups dissatisfied with the current political structure. Security was visibly tight around the Los Angeles Events Centre throughout the congress, with security operatives maintaining order as delegates and supporters trooped into the venue. Several party leaders from the South-East, South-South, North-Central and South-West also used the occasion to reaffirm their loyalty to the party and their commitment to building a united opposition coalition. The congress eventually concluded with a communique endorsing the zoning arrangement and calling on Nigerians to support the party’s vision for national transformation, economic recovery and democratic consolidation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A prominent maritime expert and philanthropist, Hon. Thomas Victor Onwubiko, has officially joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) as he intensifies consultations ahead of the 2027 Lagos State House of Assembly election for Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1. Onwubiko’s entry into the party is being viewed by political observers as a major boost for the NDC in Lagos State, particularly in Amuwo Odofin, where grassroots mobilization and youth engagement are expected to shape the political contest ahead of the next general elections. The maritime guru, who is widely known for his philanthropic interventions and community support programmes, declared that his decision to join the NDC was driven by his desire to contribute meaningfully to grassroots development and improve the welfare of residents of Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1. Speaking during his formal declaration, Onwubiko said the time had come for a new generation of leadership focused on service delivery, people-oriented governance, and inclusive development. According to him, the people of Amuwo Odofin deserve quality representation that prioritizes their needs and ensures that government policies directly impact ordinary citizens. He pledged to work tirelessly to ensure that residents of the constituency enjoy the full benefits of democratic governance if elected into the Lagos State House of Assembly in 2027. “My mission is to serve the people sincerely and ensure that the dividends of democracy get to every part of Amuwo Odofin Constituency 1,” he said. “We have many talented youths, hardworking women, traders, artisans, and professionals in this constituency who deserve better opportunities, quality infrastructure, improved education, healthcare, empowerment programmes, and economic support.” Onwubiko emphasized that his political ambition is rooted in service and community development rather than personal interests. He stated that his years of experience in the maritime sector and humanitarian activities have exposed him to the challenges facing ordinary Nigerians, especially residents at the grassroots level. According to him, many communities in Lagos still struggle with inadequate infrastructure, unemployment, poor drainage systems, and insufficient social welfare programmes despite the enormous economic potential of the state. He assured residents that he would champion legislation and policies aimed at improving the standard of living of his constituents if given the mandate to represent them. “I believe representation should go beyond occupying political office. It should be about listening to the people, understanding their problems, and finding practical solutions that will improve their lives,” he added. The philanthropist also promised to prioritize youth empowerment, education, and skills acquisition programmes to help reduce unemployment and social insecurity within the constituency. He noted that young people remain critical stakeholders in nation-building and must be given opportunities to succeed. “Our youths need empowerment, mentorship, and opportunities. We cannot continue to ignore them while expecting society to progress. My focus will be on creating pathways for economic growth and development for our young people,” he stated. Onwubiko further assured traders, market women, transport workers, and small business owners in the constituency that he would advocate policies that support small-scale businesses and improve local economic activities. He stressed that many families are struggling under harsh economic conditions and require leaders who genuinely understand their daily realities. Political supporters and party loyalists who welcomed him into the NDC described his emergence as a major development capable of strengthening the party’s structure in Lagos State. They noted that his reputation as a philanthropist and grassroots mobilizer would help expand the party’s acceptance within Amuwo Odofin and beyond. Some supporters also praised his longstanding contributions to humanitarian causes, including support for widows, youths, students, and vulnerable members of society. Party stakeholders expressed confidence that Onwubiko’s experience and popularity would position the NDC strongly ahead of the 2027 elections. They described him as a bridge-builder with the capacity to unite different political interests within the constituency. The NDC has continued to attract new members across different states following recent political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged young people, women, and community leaders to actively participate in the democratic process and work collectively toward building a better constituency. “I am ready to serve with sincerity, transparency, and accountability. Hon. Francis Barthlomew Chima, aka OmoBarca, Resigns from ADC Over Leadership Crisis Hon. Francis Barthlomew Chima, popularly known as OmoBarca, has officially resigned his membership from the African Democratic Congress on May 4, 2026, citing unresolved legal battles and internal leadership crises rocking the party. In a resignation letter addressed to the Ward Chairman of the ADC in Ward 09, Alaba Oro, Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State, the grassroots politician announced his immediate withdrawal from the party. The letter, dated May 4, 2026, was also copied to the Local Government Chairman and the Lagos State leadership of the party. According to Hon. Chima, the lingering legal disputes at the national level of the ADC have created uncertainty and weakened confidence among party faithful and supporters. He stated that the internal crisis has made it difficult for committed members to effectively mobilize and operate within the party structure. He noted that every serious politician requires a stable and conducive political platform to serve the people effectively and maintain the confidence of the electorate. However, he explained that the atmosphere within the ADC in Ajeromi Ifelodun LGA no longer provides such an environment. The resignation comes amid a series of reported leadership disputes and legal controversies within the ADC nationwide. Recent reports indicated disagreements over party leadership, recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and court cases surrounding the party’s national structure. The ADC has in recent weeks been involved in public disagreements over its leadership transition and legal tussles with INEC concerning the recognition of party executives. Hon. Chima, who thanked the party for the opportunity to serve and contribute during his time as a member, also appreciated the relationships and experiences he gained while in the ADC. He further assured supporters that his next political move would be communicated to the public at the appropriate time. Political observers in Ajeromi Ifelodun believe the resignation of OmoBarca may generate fresh conversations within the local political landscape, especially ahead of the build-up to the 2027 general elections. The development adds to the growing list of politicians distancing themselves from the ADC amid the party’s ongoing internal challenges.
