Thanks. But fact is Yoruba wanted a rallying point. Claiming a common Oduduwa ancestor was a very attractive option. Today every tiny Yoruba chiefdom claims descent from Oduduwa. This is not possible because Oduduwa lived only about 900 years ago.

Although of late they have seen the weakness of that position. Now trying to change that a bit. Some Yoruba Obas are now writing books. Invariably claiming seniority over others. Like Ooni and Ugbo king Frederick. They are trying

Whereas evidence shows people in current Edo, SW, SE and entire South have been there for thousands of years.

Fact is Oduduwa entered Ife from the East. He was very imposing, gifted and had something special that made Ife people make him their ruler.

Is it not feasible that such an figure came from an already well structured, organised monarchical society? It certainly looks like he was a prince groomed for kingship in his homeland as it was and still done in Benin today. Princes are groomed for the role from birth.

While that may not be an evidence on its own but it lends support to the Benin history and the great administrative and leadership skills that so impressed Ife people.

Now regarding Oba forging the story in 1960s, read my old posts. All is there.

In fact the book outlining Ekaladerhan story was completed in 1933. Oba Akenzua was a prince then and his father Oba Eweka's secretary. Is a lie that the prince does not see his father. Just to quickly say so. Just many of the ancient myths surrounding Oba when Oba was never ever seen by most Benin people outside Benin City.

The prince read the manuscript of Dr J. U. Egharevba to Oba Eweka.

Despite Oba Eweka's reservations, there was no proper Benin history book by a Benin man then. But Oba Eweka passed on later that year. So Oba Akenzua was not even Oba yet.

In Benin the crown prince is basically seen as a chief or ruler of a "village" called Uselu. Although grown to conglomerate with Benin City over the past two hundred years.

The prince has no power over Edo national affairs any more than the other 6 kingmaker or better called Kingcrowner chiefs in his category called UZAMA chiefs. So he couldn't have cooked up a a story by a historian with a PhD, while still a prince.

Some even write here that it was Oba Erediauwa who made up the story in the 1970s. But he only became Oba in 1979 with lots of inheritance, liabilities, ceremonies and lots to take care of. He had no free time writing stories for the next year or two. So which publication did Oba Erediauwa release in the 1970s?

People peddle lies without even checking facts.

Yes the West actively discriminated against non Yoruba in Western region. For example Awo elevated Olu of Itsekiri to Olu of Warri.

Remember what is now Delta state was called Warri Province then. It caused protests from Urhobo, Izon, Isoko, Anioma, etc. It was only resolved when name of the province was changed to Delta. Otherwise it would imply that the Olu of Yoruboid Itsekiri was ruling over all of Warri province.

Instances of tribal discrimination abound. So Oba Akenzua led others like Anioma, Urhobo, Izon already equally fed up to leave Western Region in 1963 referendum.

Note that many English speaking people of Cameroon today were part of Eastern Nigeria then too. They had a referendum to join Cameroon too and they left.
Thanks

How can any sane Midwesterner or Bendelite or Edo/Delta person hate their own son Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe. A very proud Benin descendant that wrote a whole book to celebrate his Benin ancestral lineage.

It's the Igbo that hate Zik for telling the truth in his autobiography.

You are just desperately looking for how to start another ethnic tribal war on Nairaland between Benin and Igbo and hopes the Benin lectured you along the way about various Igbo tribes, the way Yorubas were schooled and they finally run away.

Hope nobody will have your time. Go and read Zik autobiography and come back and tell us why will any Edo/Delta person hate him.

Zik was very much loved and we will continue to love, cherished and see him as one of our own. It's some Igbo people that hate him for his truth.

If Zik have any regrets, it will be against ignorant Igbo like yourself who are calling him stupid for writing about his Benin root.

If you guys have any issues about what he wrote, you wait until you meet him to confront him and ask him for further explanations, those of you that can't wait, reserve the right to immediately go and meet him wherever he his to confront him and leave Benin out of it.

Find yourself a copy of Nnamdi Azikiwe autobiography and history of Onitsha people to read.
Below is an extract.

Nnamdi Azikiwe: My Genealogy and Nativity

"Thus, in tracing my paternal lineage, I could say that both parents of my father are direct descendants of Eze Chima. As for me, I can trace my paternal ancestry in this wise: I am the first son of Chukwuemeka, who was the third child and first son of Azikiwe, who was the second son of Molokwu, who was the third son of Ozomaocha, who was the second son of Inosi Onira, who was the fourth son of Dei, the second son of Eze Chima, the founder of Onitsha." SOURCE - Nnamdi A zikiwe: My Odyssey, Chapter I (Spectrum Books, 1970) "My Genealogy and Nativity" p4 "I can trace my maternal ancestry thus: I am the first son of Nwanonaku Rachel Chinwe Ogbenyeanu (Aghadiuno)Azikiwe, who was third daughter of Aghadiuno Ajie, the fifth son of Onowu Agbani, first daughter of Obi Udokwu, the son who descended from five Kings of Onitsha. Five of these rulers of Onitsha were direct lineal descendants of Eze Chima, who led his warrior adventurers when they left Benin to establish the Onitsha city state in about 1748 AD." SOURCE - Nnamdi Azikiwe: My Odyssey, Chapter I (Spectrum Books, 1970) "My Genealogy and Nativity" p5 "One day I asked her (grandmother) the meaning of the word 'Onitsha'. She explained that it had historical significance. The terminology meant one who despised another. It is a contraction of two words, Onini to despise, and Ncha meaning others. So that the two words when joined together mean one who despises others. Then I asked her why we despised others. She patted me on the back and told me that it was due to our aristocratic background and tradition. I insisted that she should explain to me the basis of this supercilious social attitude. She told me that we despised others because we descended from the Royal House of Benin and so regarded ourselves as the superiors of other tribes who had no royal blood in their veins....." "I continued to belabor my grandmother to tell me more of the history and origins of the Onitsha people. She narrated that many many years ago, there lived at Idu (Benin) a great Oba who had many children. Due to a power struggle regarding the right of precedence among princes of the blood and other altercations, there was a civil war in Benin. One day, the supporters of one of the princes insulted and assaulted Queen Asije, the mother of of the Oba of Benin, who was accused of having trespassed on their farmland. Enraged at this evidence of indiscipline and lawlessness, the Oba ordered his war chief and brother, Gbunwala Asije to apprehend and punish the insurgents. In the attempt to penalise them, Chima, the ultimate founder of the Onitsha city-state, a prince of the blood in his own right, led the recalcitrants against his Uncle, Gbunwala. This intensified the civil war which rent the kingdom of Benin in two and led to the founding of Onitsha Ado N'Idu....... ..." "As the great trek from Benin progressed, some did not have the stout heart of the pioneer-warrior, and decided to settle at different places, known today as Onitsha -Ugbo, Onitsha-Olona, Onitsha-Mili, Obior, Issele Ukwu, Ossomari, Aboh, etc..." Just know ekaladeran story initially ended at ughoton uptill today rituals are still been done at ughoton by the oba
The stories that says ekaladeran left ughoton to ife were all made up by oba of benin for political reasons
After the banishment of ekaladeran he wondered into the forest while he was wondering he came across different villages in benin were he fell inlove with one enogies daughters from a particular village who later begot eweka for him he later left ahead to establish ughoton village were he died some account says he went further north after establishing ughoton or he died before the arrival of the searching chiefs
But all we know was ekaladeran story ended at ughoton

Yea this is were the politcs began which most yorubas know and thats why they always accuse our oba of forging the ekaladeran stories in the early 60s

Oba Akenzua during the period when the edos were in the former western region wanted to be the topmost traditional leader in the western region not just him, was aiming for this position the ooni, alafin and several others, so he cooked up a story of ekaladeran escaping to ife after he left ughoton and so on as the story goes......
But luck ran out of him because he had no political power to establish his plans, awolowo later elevated the ooni
The oba and edos were constantly marginalize by the yorubas after his failed plan, he had to pull out of the western region.... But awolowo resisted. it took the grace of god that made it succeed......

samuk:
What you see as historical facts conflicting started most recently by the Yorubas trying to rewrite their history as a unified one to make themselves look good.

Before 1897 when the British invaded and put an end to the old Benin empire, everyone knows where they stand.

The well documented History of Benin for centuries made no reference to Yoruba or Igbo as a unified tribe or one people because these tribes didn't always exist as one.

That is not to say that Benin did not interacted with some tribes in the West and East who are now part of the larger Yoruba and Igbo groups.

In dealing with Benin/Yoruba relationship, you have to look at it from the position of Benin relationship with the individual tribes in other not to muddle things up and confuse yourself.

There are the Benin/Akure relationship, Benin/Ekiti Relationship, Benin/Lagos relationship, etc.

Same with Benin/ various Igbo tribes relationship and Benin/ middle belt or North relationships.

These relationships varied depending on how cooperative or rebellious and close proximity to Benin.

Today, you will see someone whose former tribe be it Igbo or Yoruba had a nominal relationship with Benin, now arguing that Benin kingdom didn't extend their influence to Igbo land or Yoruba land.

You will see, a now member of the wider Igbo tribe arguing Benin/Onitsha relationship with prominent Onitsha indigines, same way someone from formerly little known Yoruba tribes will argue Lagos/Benin relationship with prominent Lagos indigines including the Oba of Lagos himself.

It's easy for an Igbo person to get confused seeing all these Benin/Yoruba debates online because the Yorubas of today makes it look like they used to be one big unified tribe for centuries.

Imagine reading about Benin/Oyo relationship which is different from Akure/Benin relationship which is different from Benin/Lagos relationship but all being presented as one history.

You could read an account about how Benin once beheaded an Oba from one Yoruba tribe from the indigines of that place themselves only for you to see another person from a different Yoruba tribe jumps in to shout this person down saying it never happened.

When Oba of Lagos and most of his white cap chiefs says that they are from Benin, you will see someone from Ogbomosho jumps in to argue that they don't know what they are saying.

Back to similarities between old Benin kingdom people and Yoruba, Igbo and Northerners.

Depending on where you a looking from, a Yoruba man can easily mistake a Benin man to be an Igbo man, numerous Yorubas initially thought I am Igbo until I correct them and some of them don't see the difference between Benin and Igbo

Same as some Igbos mistaking Benin to be Yorubas.

Even some Nigerians will mistake Edo North people to be Northerners because of their names and Islamic religion.

These are the consequences of being an empire, there will always be cultural overlaps from interaction from various tribes that the empire came into contact with.

This is the reason Benin is more diverse in terms of people, food, music, culture etc.

Benin is a mini Nigeria and probably the most liberal city in Nigeria, if in doubt, ask the various tribes that resides there. Tribalism is near zero.

The name benin was coined by the itsekiri unlike the initial belive that would attribute it to ife, many scholars had disproved the ife-benin connections as false, there was a need to look deeper into the true history, and it happened that the Portuguese while sailing the niger coast came in contact firstly with the itsekiri who had introduced them to their superior power who preceded over them which were the edo peole as they were called at that very time, edo had gotten its name less than a century before the Portuguese arrival, the itsekiri had told the described to the Portuguese that the benin people were very violent people and its not a place the Portuguese would want to venture into the they had called it ile binu, land of anger which the Portuguese corrupted as benin
Egharevba who was the first benin historian in the former western region had tried to link all benin acount directly to ife, his first publication a short story of benin published 1939, was first rejected by the ibadan printing press which happen to be the only printing press in the then western region, egharevba had later gone to ulter his original works relating the benins directly to ife....

Ekaladeran died at ughoton he never went to ife
Some folklore believed ekaladeran left ughoton to an unknown location before the arrival of the searching benin chiefs..... Were he had left to was unknown, this is what benins had mainted before the creation of nigeria, but during our stay in the western region ekaladeran story became edited for political gain.....

I will only believe you if you can give archeological evidence benin and ife had a connection before the creation of nigeria,

Or you can present a document as early as 10c upto 1800 proving benin had a connection with ife
I guess this wont be hard na, Europeans recorded all yoruba tribes we came in contact with i guess ife should be there just find it out for me
And i will pull down this thread

Nothing was distorted from the Bini side. Ekhaladeran was a prince and heir to the throne who was unlawfully sent to his death by the king's order because one of the queens changed the message of the priest b4 it got to the king. The King believing what got to him is the wish of God ordered the prince to be killed and the men sent to execute him made him swear never to return to Bini and mind you kings of Bini at this time were called Ogiso meaning king of the sky. So when Prince Ekhaladeran got to the present day Ife. The Yorubas needed a king and their priest told them a man will come from the bush and he should be king. On seeing him he was questioned where he came from and with the language barrier he had to use another means to communicate where he is from remember he is from the land of the sky kings (Ogiso) therefore he had to use hands to dramatize where he came from and it's only logical he use his hands to say he came from the sky. So there you have the Yoruba folklore of a man coming from the sky.
