Politics › Lesotho Pull Out Of AYC Qualifier Against Nigeria Over Ebola outbreak by Valto(op): 4:50pm On Aug 15, 2014 |
Lesotho said on Friday they have pulled out of this weekend's final 2015 African Youth Championship qualifier against Nigeria because of concerns about an outbreak of Ebola in the country. "We have contacted the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and copied the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) that we will not be coming for this game," said Lesotho Football Federation official Limtho Mokhethi. The Senegalese officials appointed for the under-20 game have already arrived in the northern Nigeria city of Kaduna, where the match was to have been played. African football's governing body CAFwill now have to decide on the overall winners of the final qualifier, as a second leg in Lesotho is not expected to take place. The 2015 African Youth Championship will be played in Senegal from March 8. www.supersport.com/football/africa/news/140815/Lesotho_pull_out_of_AYC_over_Ebola |

Politics › Anambra Begins Work On N5.6billion 3 Flyovers In Awka. by Valto(op): 9:26am On Aug 13, 2014 |
Work began on the sites of three flyover projects in Awka, the Anambra State capital, as promised earlier by Governor Willie Obiano to mark his 100 days in office.
Jubilation erupted in the Anambra State capital when one of the landmarks at Aroma junction/round-about, the tower of light that adorned Awka was brought down on Saturday amidst joy signifying the readiness of the construction company to begin work.
As at Monday, the company worked round the clock to clear the debris and had also began excavation of the roundabout with earth-moving equipment, articulated trucks, excavators and loaders of the construction company.
Thousands of residents of Awka gathered at the junction and were excited to observe the new landscape of the state capital as soon as the earthmovers started burrowing the designated areas for piling and proceeded to bring down the tower.
It would be recalled that as part of the activities lined up to commemorate his first 100 days in office, Obiano, had flagged off the construction of three flyovers in Awka and neighbouring Amawbia town aimed at ensuring a free-flow of traffic and easy diversion into the main city of Awka.
He assured then that all the roads to be constructed by his administration would be complemented with street lights to change the landscape of the state capital.
Obiano stated during the flag-off event that, “what is being done today is in fulfilment of our promise that we will transform Awka into a befitting state capital and we will not relent in achieving this.
“All we are asking for is the cooperation of everybody, as we will not hesitate to deal with anybody who foments trouble in the state.”
The governor stressed further: “I will not renege on my promise to pay the contractors on time. As for the shopping mall, I have paid them completely and we do not owe them a dime. The mall is expected to be ready in nine months-time while we expect the completion of the flyovers in one year. Www.dailyindependentnig.com/2014/08/anambra-begins-work-n5-6b-flyovers-awka/ |

Politics › Ngige: 2nd Niger Bridge is a Fraud, Takes Governorship Petition To Supreme Court by Valto(op): 8:25pm On Jul 26, 2014 |
Senator Chris Ngige, representing Anambra Central Senatorial zone has described the construction of the second Niger Bridge by the federal government as a huge fraud meant to rip off the people of the South-East. Ngige, who spoke during the inauguration of the Anambra State executives of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), said that he deliberately stayed away from the ground breaking ceremony of the bridge months ago for three reasons. “The first is that the bridge is being built on a Public Private Partnership(PPP) deal, with overseas financiers. For that reason, the cost of the bridge suffered double inflation, both from the Nigeria end and the financiers who alleged cost of fund. “The bridge, which should have cost N70 billion is now to cost N114 billion, that was why I told the South-East Senate Caucus that I was not going to be a part of it. As a governor in this state, I resisted that arrangement from Mr Obasanjo. “In the budget, we have similar bridges and same length built for free by the federal government. Why should that built for the South-East be toll gated? That bridge will have two toll gates, one in the Asaba end and one in the Onitsha end. Before you pass through it and come back, you would have spent N1,000, that is injustice. We will continue to fight to ensure that the bridge is not toll gated”, Ngige said. Ngige said similar bridges across the country had been funded by the federal government, and wondered why that of the South-East should involve a PPP that would keep the people in bondage for full 25 years. Speaking on the attempted assassination on General Buhari on Wednesday, Ngige said it was a vindication of the APC, after the PDP accused it of being the sponsors of Boko Haram. He said the bomb was targeted at Buhari, but that lucky enough, God saved him. “So will they now say that Buhari bombed his own convoy? Then I ask, do you show that you are a brave man by taking a knife and cutting yourself? They just wanted to kill him, but good a thing his car, which is a bullet proof car was not touched, but then, that is bullet proof and not bomb proof”. Ngige stated that APC is still on course, with the aim of taking over and rebuilding Nigeria. He said that the attack on Buhari had shown that APC or Buhari as a person has no hand in what is happening in the country. He told members of the party that APC is very concerned about the troubles in the country, and has directed all its governors to give their cooperation to the federal government to ensure that Nigeria overcomes terrorism. “Terrorism is not something you play politics with. If I tell you the truth, Our governors in the North-East, where Boko Haram has taken roots are spending their private funds on security to see how they can beat the condition there, and here someone is accusing them of complicity. If APC is responsible for the terrorism, it would have taken it to PDP governed states”. Speaking on his matter at the Appeal Court, Enugu, Ngige expressed hope that today’s (Saturday) judgment will be in his favour, but adding quickly that, “if they decide to do mago mago, then we are sure the whole thing will end in the Supreme Court”. www.dailypost.ng/2014/07/26/senator-ngige-says-2nd-niger-bridge-fraud-vows-take-governorship-petition-supreme-court |

Politics › Anambra Governorship Petition: ngige Loses Appeal Against Obiano’s Election. by Valto(op): 4:19pm On Jul 26, 2014 |
The Enugu zone of the Court of Appeal today dismissed the appeal brought before it by Chris Ngige, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the November 16, 2013 election. Mr. Ngige had asked the appeal court to overturn the verdict of the Anambra State Governorship Election Tribunal that had earlier upheld the election of Willie Obiano of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) as the Anambra governor. Mr. Obiano was sworn in in March 2014 to succeed former Governor Peter Obi, also of APGA.
Justice Mohammed Lawal Garba led a panel of five justices in considering the appeal filed by Mr. Ngige who sought a ruling setting aside the verdict of the tribunal and a determination that the election had failed to comply with electoral laws.
In rejecting all the grounds of appeal filed by the APC candidate, the appellate court ratified the election that brought Mr. Obiano into office.
Today’s verdict marks the final stage of any legal challenge to the election of Mr. Obiano. www.saharareporters.com/2014/07/26/anambra-governorship-election-petition-ngige-loses-appeal-against-obiano’s-election
