Daily Trust Accused of Using Outdated Images to Fuel Security Unrest and Incite Public Sentiment in Nigeria A critical review of recent reporting by Daily Trust on the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) airstrike in Jilli raises serious concerns about accuracy, credibility, and ethical journalism. Background of the Incident On April 11, 2026, a Nigerian Air Force operation targeting insurgents in the Jilli axis (Borno–Yobe border) reportedly resulted in significant civilian casualties. Multiple independent reports indicate that the strike was intended for terrorist targets but may have mistakenly hit a populated area. Key Concern: Use of Misleading and Outdated Images A comparative analysis of images used in the Daily Trust front-page publication shows strong evidence of recycled visuals from unrelated past incidents, presented as if they were from the recent Jilli strike. 1. CNN Image (2014) Source: CNN report titled “Dozens killed in spate of Nigeria attacks” (2014). Context: Explosion scene in Maiduguri over a decade ago. Issue: This image predates the Jilli incident by over 10 years, yet similar visuals appear in the Daily Trust layout. https://edition.cnn.com/2014/03/02/world/africa/nigeria-blasts 2. Ghana-based Report Image Source: Modern Ghana article on Boko Haram violence. Context: Crowd and destruction linked to earlier insurgency attacks. Issue: Not related to the 2026 Jilli airstrike but visually reused to depict current casualties. https://www.modernghana.com/news/886338/candidates-queue-up-to-run-boko-haram-hit-nigerian-state.html 3. Francophone Africa Report Source: Agence Afrique coverage of a separate drone strike incident involving civilian deaths. Context: Different event, different timeline. Issue: Repurposed imagery contributes to a misleading narrative. https://www.agenceafrique.com/49133-nigeria-lonu-exige-du-nigeria-une-enquete-impartiale-sur-les-frappes-de-drone-ayant-fait-85-victimes-civiles.html Implication of the Image Discrepancies The reuse of unrelated archival images in a breaking national security story creates several risks: Public Misinformation: Readers are led to believe visuals are from the Jilli incident. Narrative Distortion: Suggests deliberate framing of the operation strictly as a civilian-targeted attack. Erosion of Trust: Undermines confidence in both print and digital journalism. Escalation of Tension: In a conflict-sensitive region, misleading visuals can inflame public outrage and distrust in the military. Contradiction in Narrative Framing While Daily Trust’s headline asserts mass civilian casualties, available reports indicate: According to the DHQ, the strike was targeted at terrorist elements. This highlights a critical distinction between operational intent and outcome, which responsible journalism must carefully present. Call to Nigerian Security Agencies Given the sensitivity of counter-terrorism operations, Nigerian security authorities must urgently: - Investigate Media Misrepresentation - Determine whether the use of outdated images constitutes deliberate misinformation. - Strengthen Strategic Communication - Provide timely, verified visuals and briefings to prevent narrative hijacking. - Engage Regulatory Bodies - Work with media regulators to enforce ethical standards in conflict reporting. Assess National Security Impact Misleading reports can: Undermine troop morale Fuel insurgent propaganda Damage Nigeria’s global reputation

A Former Congressman Jim Moran has advocated for Biafra Liberation under the Biafra Republic Government In-Exile. Simon Ekpa, the Prime Minister of BRGIE disclosed this through his X handle on Friday. Accordingly, Moran justified his advocacy on Biafra Independent on the 1967-1970 Civic War which he said left about Two million Biafra dead and the continued marginalization of the southeast region by the Nigerian government. Consequently, under a $10K per month contract with BRGIE that went into effect on June 15, 2024, Moran and his firm are expected to lobby to gain US support for Biafra’s independence. Moran raised alarm on the Government of Nigeria, human rights abuses, religious freedom issues, persecution of Christians, increasing Islamic fundamentalism within the Nigerian government and its alignment with U.S. adversaries. Moran, a Democrat, represented the northern Virginia communities of Arlington, Alexandria, and Fairfax County in the US, for 24 years. https://authorityngr.com/2024/06/21/us-ex-congressman-moran-advocates-for-biafra-independent-under-brgie/ |
An interesting angle on this narrative is that it seems to originate from a separatist movement - the so-called "Biafran separatists" - in the South of Nigeria who last year hired former U.S. Congressman Jim Moran as a lobbyist to push for their movement. On the very website of Jim Moran's lobbying firm - Moran Global Strategies - he posted last year that he was taking them as clients and intended "to lobby to gain US support for Biafra’s independence" under the angle of "raising the alarm on the persecution of Christians": https://moranstrategies.com/us-ex-congressman-moran-advocates-for-biafra-independent-under-brgie/ Which is quite an ironic angle in the case of the Biafra area because it's located in the South of the country, which is overwhelmingly Christian (Nigeria is actually the country in Africa with the most Christians), and is the safest part of the country for Christians. They're apparently paying Jim Moran "under a $10K per month contract" (again, according to Moran himself on his website) which, assuming this is indeed what spurred Trump's sudden passion for Nigerian Christians, would make it perhaps the greatest ROI in lobbying history: shaping US foreign policy for the cost of a small startup's marketing budget. |
Like someone said, some of the victims themselves are bandit sympathizer because the bandits wrapped the campaign in the name of Jihad, and since they believe in the Jihadist cause, they are confused and couldn't counter it openly not to be seen as been against the religion, yet they continue to be the victim. |
