A “few people” are behind the appointments made by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, says his wife, Aisha. In an interview with BBC, Aisha Buhari said she may not support her husband’s re-election bid should he fail to reshuffle his government. “He is yet to tell me but I have decided as his wife, that if things continue like this up to 2019, I will not go out and campaign again and ask any woman to vote like I did before. I will never do it again”, she said while speaking with Naziru Mikailu. The wife of the president also noted that certain elements who did not share the vision of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were given political appointments because of the influence of some individuals. “Some people are sitting down in their homes folding their arms only for them to be called to come and head an agency or a ministerial position.” Aisha Buhari however, failed to mention the names of the people who wield such influence, saying: “You will know them if you watch television.” When asked if Buhari was in charge of his government, she was quoted as saying, “That is left for the people to decide.” Aisha Buhari however, gave her husband a pass mark in his government’s efforts against Boko Haram insurgency, particularly in Maiduguri, Borno state. “No-one is complaining about being attacked in their own homes. Thankfully everyone can walk around freely, go to places of worship, etc. Even kids in Maiduguri have returned to schools”, she added. https://www.thecable.ng/i-will-never-again-campaign-for-buhari-if-things-continue-like-this-says-wife?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThecableTopStories+%28TheCable+%C2%BB+Top+Stories%29

So far the recession disapperas soon. If not, the banks will go back to the sacking business |
The bankers’ committee has assured the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) that it would halt any plans of mass retrenchment within the Nigerian banking industry. This was disclosed by ‘Tokunbo Martins, director of CBN banking supervision, after the Bankers’ Committee meeting in Lagos on Wednesday evening. “One of the things we discussed was about the impending retrenchment in the banking industry. So, we understand that many bank workers are expressing fears about possible retrenchment in the industry,” she said. “We discussed and the banks are now committed to not retrenching their staff, going forward. So, whatever rumours are flying around that mass retrenchment is happening or not happening, that is not true. NIGERIAN BANKS STRONG AND SAFE Martins assured the public after the meeting that he was sure that all banks were strong and stable. She added that there was enough buffer to pull through the crisis. “The banks are adequately capitalised, so the report is not true,” she said. “That does not mean that the banking sector is not feeling the economic headwinds. The headwinds are also in every other jurisdiction. “It is not strange. So, non-performing loans at 11.7 per cent is not what we should focus on. The underlying assets of the banks are still there, and they are good. So, I think you should totally dispel or ignore that type of story. “It should be expected to have non-performing loans (NPLs). It is not the reason why any jurisdiction should be demonized. There are other jurisdictions that have NPLs as high as 15 per cent, 35 per cent and so on.” Fitch, one of the big three rating agencies in the world, also raised the alarm on NPLs within the Nigerian banking sector, while warning against a possible downgrade in the future. https://www.thecable.ng/bankers-committee-agree-cbn-halt-mass-sack?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThecableTopStories+%28TheCable+%C2%BB+Top+Stories%29

Niger state government intends to stop the payment of West African Examination Certificate (WAEC) and National Examination Council (NECO) fees for its secondary school students. According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Sani Bello, Niger governor, said this on Tuesday while lamenting the track record of unimpressive performance of the students. “Government spend such huge money for students that cannot even have four credits. Only about five per cent of students will have four credits and above”, said Bello, during a visit to Justice Legbo Kutigi secondary school. “Basically, it is like we are throwing away money. We will rather stop and invest the money on the facilities so that with time we will get good results”, he said. The governor noted that the issue has to be reviewed as the state had incurred debts from paying for the students’ examinations. “We must review the issue of the payment of NECO and WAEC fees because at the moment, we are still owing NECO and WAEC about N800 million”, Bello said. He further explained that the criterion for paying for the examination would henceforth, be based on the students’ performance. Speaking about the debt that had been incurred, he said: “the Commissioner for Finance has met with NECO and WAEC officials and there is an understanding that the debt issue will be addressed”. https://lifestyle.thecable.ng/niger-waec-neco-payment-students/

Some people will still keep them on and blame samsung for their ignorance later |
After failing with the first line of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones, Samsung dished out a “safe” replacement which has also hit the rocks and literally gone up in flames. The tech conglomerate has urged users of the Galaxy Note 7 to “turn off” their phones and stop continued usage. At this point, the company says sales of the phone will be stopped. In September, when the batteries of the first batch of Galaxy Note 7 smartphones went ablaze, users uploaded photos of their burnt phones on the internet. Samsung was then forced to recall about 2.5 million devices. A few weeks later, the company assured users that the replacement phones were safe for use until negative reports started to filter in again. “Because consumers’ safety remains our top priority, Samsung will ask all carrier and retail partners globally to stop sales and exchanges of the Galaxy Note 7 while the investigation is taking place,” the company said. “Consumers with either an original Galaxy Note 7 or replacement Galaxy Note 7 device should power down and stop using the device and take advantage of the remedies available,” it added. The present turn of events couldn’t have come at a worse time for Samsung as competition in the $400bn phone market is at an all-time high. Andrew Milroy, a technology analyst at Frost & Sullivan told the BBC that: “Samsung had been making a comeback against its rivals. This catastrophic product fault will seriously damage its competitive position in the smartphone market.” A Southwest Airlines flight in the US was recently evacuated after a passenger’s Samsung phone began emitting smoke. Flight 994 leaving Louisville, Kentucky was evacuated on the runway prior to takeoff. The heat damage from the explosion was so severe that a fire official could not independently verify the model of the phone. https://lifestyle.thecable.ng/galaxy-note-7-smartphone-samsung/

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has directed the management of universities to reduce the number of graduates to be mobilised for the 2016 batch ‘B’ orientation course. Preparations for the batch B orientation course, which is supposed to begin on November 24, are underway as institutions are expected to have begun submission of approved graduates. However, as a result of the recent developments, tertiary institutions are battling with how to formulate the criteria for selecting graduates to go for orientation. K. A. Ogunleye, registrar of Bowen University, says the institution “has been requested to mobilise only three hundred and sixty-seven (367) graduates out of the nine hundred and fifty six (956) graduates eligible for the exercise in 2016”. “The remaining graduates will be given priority in the next mobilisation exercise scheduled for early 2017. “Parents/guardians as well as graduates are kindly requested to note that management is already considering the criteria to be used for the mobilisation of the allocated number of graduates”, added Ogunleye. A recent graduate of Babcock University, who is awaiting mobilisation, told TheCable Lifestyle that the institution is “trying” to work out a solution. “When I heard, I called someone in school and the person is part of the management. Although the person did not tell me the actual figure NYSC gave them, he said that they were trying to work something out”, said the Babcock graduate. Similarly, recent graduates of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) revealed that out of the over 4,000 students ready for mobilisation, the scheme intends to select a quarter of them for batch ‘B’ orientation. Either all or none Meanwhile, students who are waiting to be mobilised have started a social media campaign with the hashtag “#EitherAllOrNothing”, which they are using to protest the proposed quota system introduced by the scheme. According to the aggrieved students, the only options available to NYSC is to mobilise all eligible graduates or scrap the entire scheme. Graveyard silence from NYSC In various posts on the social media accounts of the NYSC, students have questioned the authenticity of the quota system. A letter addressed to heads of department in Nnamdi Azikwe university has been circulated on the internet. The letter, whose authenticity cannot be independently confirmed by TheCable Lifestyle, contains an invitation to ballot on behalf of prospective corps members as the quota of the university has been reduced from 2,314 to 894. The letter from UNIZIK The letter from UNIZIK It is believed that the nation’s recession and the paucity of funds are contributory factors to the present situation, however, the only indication that the NYSC might be having financial constraints is a post on its Facebook page. The post is a report of the meeting between the scheme and the senate committee on Youths and Sports development. It reads: “The Senate Committee on Youth and Sports Development has stressed the need for adequate budgetary provisions to enable the National Youth Service Corps mobilize all eligible graduates for national service.” TheCable Lifestyle has reached out to the NYSC for confirmation of the reduction but has gotten no response thus far. https://lifestyle.thecable.ng/nysc-mobilisation-orientation/

Corruption has won again |
A high court in Abuja has granted the application of the federal government to withdraw the forgery charge against Bukola Saraki, senate president, and Ike Ekweremadu, his deputy. Yusuf Halilu, the judge, struck out the entire suit against the duo, alongside Salisu Maikasuwa, former clerk of the national assembly, and Ben Efeturi, his deputy. They were accused of forging the senate standing rules that led to the emergence of Saraki and Ekweremadu as leadership of the senate in June 2015. https://www.thecable.ng/just-in-as-requested-by-fg-court-strikes-out-forgery-charge-against-saraki?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThecableTopStories+%28TheCable+%C2%BB+Top+Stories%29
