A California woman has been awarded $70 million in damages after claiming that Johnson & Johnson’s baby powder caused her ovarian cancer. Deborah Giannecchini, who has been diagnosed with Stage 4 ovarian cancer, was on Thursday awarded the said sum by a jury in St. Louis. The suit accused Johnson & Johnson of “negligent conduct” by making and marketing its baby powder – which had used for several years. “We are pleased the jury did the right thing. They once again reaffirmed the need for Johnson & Johnson to warn the public of the ovarian cancer risk associated with its product,” Jim Onder, an attorney for the plaintiff, told The Associated Press. “We deeply sympathize with the women and families impacted by ovarian cancer,” Carol Goodrich, a spokeswoman with Johnson & Johnson, said in a statement. “We will appeal today’s verdict because we are guided by the science, which supports the safety of Johnson’s Baby Powder.” According to ABC, earlier this year, two other lawsuits in St. Louis ended in jury verdicts worth a combined $127 million. About 2,000 women have filed similar suits, and lawyers are reviewing thousands of other potential cases. According to a press release from the law firm representing her, the award breakdown is as follows: $575,000 in economic damages $2,000,000 Million in non-economic damages $65 Million in punitive damages against Johnson & Johnson $2.5 Million in punitive damages against Imerys https://lifestyle.thecable.ng/california-johnson-johnson-baby-powder-cancer/

The appeal court on Thursday dismissed Senate President Bukola Saraki’s appeal challenging his trial at the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT). The panel led by Abdul Aboki, a justice, dismissed the appeal and held that the appellant’s submission was laced with sentiments. Aboki further struck out a cross appeal by the appellant filed at court, saying that it was “smuggled in”. Saraki is standing trial for alleged false declaration of assets. Usman Bugaje, an ambassadorial nominee from Katsina state, has given a reason why he turned down President Muhammadu Buhari’s offer. He has declined to speak to the media on his decision. But on his Facebook page on Wednesday, the northern politician thanked Buhari for the appointment, but he said he could not accept it because his hands were full. “Regarding the published nomination for an ambassadorial posting, I have not spoken to the press and may not do so anytime soon,” he wrote. “I thank those who think me fit for the job, but I have so much in my hands already, especially the Arewa Research and Development Project (ARDP), which is the only broad platform in the north driving development. “I have weighed the options and have decided to remain home and continue the struggle for development and good governance.” Pauline Tallen, former deputy governor of Plateau state, had also rejected her ambassadorial appointment, citing lack of “proper consultation” as the reason for her decision. On Monday, governors elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) platform met with Buhari to express their concerns over the list of ambassadorial nominees. But the president told them to put their concerns in writing. Akintunde Akinwande, a professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, has also turned down his appointment as the chairman of the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). https://www.thecable.ng/bugaje-buhari-rejected-appointment-hands-full?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThecableTopStories+%28TheCable+%C2%BB+Top+Stories%29

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) says for sub-Saharan Africa to record its required growth in 2017, the oil exporters most short-changed by falling crude prices, such as Nigeria and Angola, must act fast. Speaking on IMF regional outlook for sub-Saharan Africa, Abebe Selassie, director of the IMF’s African department, disclosed that economic growth in sub-Saharan Africa in 2016 is set to slow to its lowest level in more than 20 years. “The slowdown reflects two broad factors; the external environment facing many of the region’s countries has deteriorated, notably with commodity prices at multi-year lows and financing conditions markedly tighter,” he said. “In addition, the policy response in many of the countries most affected by these shocks has been delayed and inadequate, raising uncertainty, deterring private investment and stifling new sources of growth.” He said Africa must give in to pessimism as “the fuller picture is one of multi-speed growth, with the aggregate growth number masking considerable diversity across the region”. He said most non-commodity exporting countries—representing close to half of the countries in the region—continue to perform well, with countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Senegal, and Tanzania foreseen to continue to grow at more than six percent. Selassie noted that a modest pick-up in economic activity is likely, provided strong policy action is taken. “Subject to reforms being initiated quickly in the coming months, growth would recover close to 3 percent in 2017. But to make this happen, the hardest-hit countries, especially oil exporters, need to act promptly,” he added. “Given the scale and persistent nature of the shock, and as existing buffers have been exhausted, a comprehensive three-pronged adjustment effort is needed urgently: Strong fiscal adjustment, enhanced social protection policies, and structural reforms to facilitate competitiveness and diversification. “Further delays in addressing the elevated macroeconomic imbalances are certain to undermine growth prospects further and delay a robust and job-rich recovery.” https://www.thecable.ng/imf-if-africa-will-grow-in-2017-nigeria-must-act-fast?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+ThecableTopStories+%28TheCable+%C2%BB+Top+Stories%29

A former deputy governor of Plateau, Mrs Pauline Tallen, has said that she turned down her ambassadorial nomination in order to be fair to other parts of the state in terms of federal appointments. Tallen, a former Minister of Science and Technology and Labour Party governorship candidate in Plateau in 2011, made this known in Abuja on Monday. “I hail from the same local government and tribe with Gov. Simon Lalong. I turned down the nomination because of balancing of appointments; I don’t think it is right for me to accept the appointment. “Secondly, proper consultation was not done, my governor was not consulted because I called him when he was in United States of America to ask but he said that he was not aware. “For me, I was consulted and I turned down the appointment even before the announcement was made,” adding that “my husband’s ill-health is another reason why I will not accept the appointment. Tallen said that Mr President gave her another option and also assured her that Plateau would not miss its two slots. The former deputy governor, who appreciated President Muhammadu Buhari for the honour, said that her name was not included on the list of nominees and was surprised when the announcement was made. She further said that her decline would not affect Plateau chances for the two slots as another name had already been submitted in her stead. Meanwhile Gov. Simon Lalong has described Tallen’s decline as an exhibition of political maturity. “Plateau is always on the front-burner when it comes to politics, that shows her maturity not just in Plateau but as a national figure. “Once things are not done properly, it is better for a leader and a mother to come out and say that things are not done properly in the interest of the state. “When I heard the announcement I was very shock because what happened was without proper consultation,” he said while interacting with newsmen in Abuja. The governor said that his administration was working toward addressing the issue of balancing appointments, and pointed out that he had already discuss the issue with Mr President in their last meeting. Lalong said that the opposition was already saying that the appointments were lopsided, but stressed his administration was a government of change and they would only do what would favour all sections of the state. He appreciated Tallen for her decision, and assured the people that their quota would be filled and he would go further to ensure that distinguished sons and daughters of Plateau get more appointments. https://www.today.ng/news/nigeria/202947/rejected-ambassadorial-nomination-tallen
