Smiles have come on the faces of over 170 suffering from cleft in Nigeria through the initiative of Oral Health Advocacy Initiative (OHAI), in collaboration with a USA charity body, Smile Train and the Federal Ministry of Health.

OHAI is a Non-Governmental Agency that seeks to advance the course of Oral Health delivery in Nigeria and Africa, through Advocacy, Strategic Partnership, Community Mobilization, Oral Health Education, Consultancy Services and Treatment of Oro-facial Diseases.
According to the Executive Director of Oral Health Advocacy Initiative, Dr. Ver-or Ngutor, explained that the feat was achieved through strategic partnership with Smile Train and the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH).

Dr. Ver-or who is a Fellow of the West African College of Surgeon and lead surgeon further disclosed that the cleft surgical operations which were performed on 174 patients in four weeks was done by a team of Doctors and other health workers trained on cleft management.

“We as an organization have over the years mobilized resources to addressing the challenges of cleft amongst our people. We have our operations spread across 32 states and the Federal Capital Territory and are determined to reach to as many patients that are affected by cleft.

“From 2011 when we commenced cleft surgery program, we have done over 3500 safe surgeries. This was recognized in 2017 when our major donor, Smile Train named us ‘Global Leader in Cleft Care in Africa’ for complying with best practices.

“In the month of August 2019 alone, we were able to successfully carry out 174 surgeries with the support of the Benue, Kebbi and Yobe state governments as well as Rano Health Care and Community Development Initiative in Kano state”, he stated.
Dr Ngutor added that OHAI’s mission was to reach out to the undeserved rural dwellers that are hard to reach and neglected, since 90 percent of Doctors live and practice in urban centers while living a great majority of the populace unattended and at a great risk of the ravages of Oro-facial diseases.

Cleft lip is a variation of a type of congenital deformity, caused by abnormal facial development during gestation period leading to non-fusion of facial structure before birth, which impacts on the individual’s self-esteem, social skills and economic isolation.

Oral Health Advocacy Initiative in her continuous desire to improve the health and living standard of Nigerian Children, Men and Women especially the hard to reach and undeserved rural dwellers has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the Federal Government of Nigeria.⁣

The MoU which was signed by the Federal Ministry of Health (FMoH) on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) exists to facilitate collaboration through the provision of technical assistance, capacity building, training, knowledge and skill transfer.⁣

The scope of the MoU requires the partners to work hard to meet health challenges, mainstreaming partnership in professionalism in the field of health, information sharing, organize workshops and summit both at National and International levels and the development of Medical and health infrastructure in Nigeria.⁣

Subsequently, the parties are to partner in the areas of oral health intervention, Noma intervention, cleft surgery, Oral cancer control, Oral health care for women and children, Oral health perspective of HIV/AIDS and Oral health awareness, sensitization and intervention. Other areas include immunization, maternal death, and infant mortality control, maxillofacial treatments and other health challenges for the period of four years.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Government of Nigeria, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health, Alhaji A. M. Abdullahi said the ministry will monitor and evaluate Oral Health Advocacy Initiative projects periodically while supporting the development of Medical and Health Infrastructure, provide also institutional support in specific areas that will help facilitate a healthy relationship that will translate policy documents to implementation through the partnership with OHAI.

In response, the Executive Director of Oral Health Advocacy Initiative, Dr. Ver-or Ngutor lauded the partnership as he expressed the organization’s commitment to engage in the treatment of communicable diseases, non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, and other emerging and re-emerging diseases. Dr. Ver-or Ngutor added that OHAI will develop models to be used for Health promotion and disease prevention program in line with World Health Assembly.

This 17 year old girl is missing for two weeks now. The father, Senan Murray broke the sad news on his Facebook wall today, saying...

Victoria Murray, 17, is my daughter. I reckon she's about 6ft tall because she's taller than me. Tomorrow will make it two weeks since she disappeared, we believe, on her way to school. She is a student of Holy Child College, Ikoyi, Lagos. Until she went missing, Victoria lived with the rest of the family in Oniru, Victoria Island, Lagos.

To go to school, Victoria would normally take the bus from Sand Fill bus stop along the Lekki-Epe Expressway to Obalende as her school is located just at the edge of Ikoyi, next door to St Gregory's College.

We have since reported Victoria's disappearance to the Police, who assure us that they are doing their best to find our daughter.

Vicky, as we call her, is rather introverted and soft-spoken with a slender body type. She is quite light complexioned and wears close-cropped hair in a fashion recommended by her school. She speaks only English and does not have any tribal marks.

Here is a picture of a little boy who had probably not seen an image on a screen before.

He was sitted when we started mounting our equipment, we had the sound checked, projector screen fixed, connected our computers and turned on the projector for display.

The little boy then rose from the ground and shouted with excitement upon seeing the animated objects moving and interacting with each other on the screen.

He was glued to the screen and couldn't sit back on the floor and others stood to join him standing.
