Whenever @Soft777 and @Robonski15 speaks ,we see charisma at its best....Thank u both and every other guru in the house for your advice's and good motive for fish farmers in Nigeria (Though I'm still aspiring to be one) .
My little contribution on the proposed association to be formed is for us to try and contact the heads of other existing associations. Share this vision with them . Make them see the benefits of coming together, in that way you would reach out to many farmers at a time and grow the network of farmers in the shortest time possible.
On the feed & seed distribution since you are adopting zones/location as basis of distribution their should be a maximum&equal capacity to each zone per month. In so doing it will ensure steady and even circulation.
Above all else I think the said union should emphasize more on price of catfish to take that from the buyers(iya elejas as u call them). This should be the most important factor of forming this group as most of the other benefits some fish farmers may have alternatives to solving their problems. My humble opinion. |

vickychuk: MY CATFISH STORY SO FAR: Good evening the Op,Gurus and guests of the house. All protocol observed. I want to say a big thank you for the good job u have been doing on this thread and on nairaland. Reading through the years of experience and various posts,It's as if we've already met and I must confess I've learnt a lot.
I plan on going into commercial fish farming by next year february during my IT as land and water has been acquired remaining pond construction.I bought some fingerlings (25) for practice as advised on the thread to start small on Nov 17th. I stocked them into a 20l plastic bucket(will sort into other containers as they grow). I lost 4 cos they jumped out during the night and 1 to cannibalism . I feed them 0.8mm feed as recommended by the seller.I bought at 30# per fingerling and 1kg of the feed cost 1100#. They feed twice a day and eat aggressively as they should . Turned silver grey 4 days after stocking but i guess its because the container is white in colour but they are still as active as ever.I change their water every 2-3 days to avoid bad smell and feed to satiation. So far there growth is visible and positive as attested by most of my lodge mates. Will post pictures tomorrow after changing water.
I want to start my farm with at most 1000 fishes which would cost me 30,000# on fingerlings which I've come to trust as good seeds or go for an untested source who promised to sell at 15# when he spawns next that would cost 15,000#.Another alternative going through my head right now is to get a pair of brood stock, set up a vat and attempt my first spawning exercise and allow natural selection to give me my BEST 1000 IF they make it.
1]Pls I need advice on the best course of action on sourcing fingerlings. 2]Cost estimate for two 12x12x4 concrete ponds including sizes of drainage and inlet pipes diameter. 3]Price of the most affordable aerator, water pump, digital thermometer and pH meter. 4]Can tilapia fries/fingerlings effectively serve as substitute for catfish feed.If yes, how best should it be served to catfish. Thanks in advance. These are the pictures

@soft777 Oga mi, I don't think sir Robonski would be able to send just 1000 fingerlings to port harcourt as I see it isn't too convenient for him. On the pond I thought non-hollow 6 inches blocks would be better as the 9 inches blocks are mostly hollow and filling with concrete would be money waste. I would adopt the double plastering technique u adviced. Can u give me a name or brand I could use as reference when buying the waterproof cement. can the tillapia fries find their way out of the happa net for easier collection without disturbing the brood tilapia and what is the mesh size of the happa net to be used? Thanks |

soft777: I have treated this topic FCR before, but for more understanding i will elaborate. FCR is the basics of all animals, poultry and fish farming ,it is used to determine the amount of feed that goes into your animal to determine the amount of tissue or flesh your fish gains , to avoid wasting ,since fish is almost 65 to 70 percent of your total cost of production. Before i calculate , it should be noted that any fish farmer who do no know its feed conversion ratio is doing the business blindly; sorry for the word but its the truth , because your fcr will help determine how much profit you get at the end of a cycle. TO get optimum result in your profit , you can do a 2 weeks or monthly interval calculation by having a good record of your fish first weight when you stock. Using the method i apply on my farm , i do the 2 weeks interval, lets say i stocked some fingerlings last 2 weeks in my farm, and i weighed 10 fingerlings to give me 50 grams and after 2 weeks i weighed 10 of the fishes and it gave me 100 grams this implies that my fish are now 100 minus 50 = 50 grams , this implies that my fishes have gained extra 50 grams in 2 weeks of feeding , but this is not the fcr but its called the weight gained . The fcr still depends on the amount or quantity of feed , the fishes will eat for the 2 weeks , so if they eat 60 kg that is 4 bag of feed for this 2 weeks interval. It means to calculate fcr you divide the TOTAL FEED FED BY THE TOTAL WEIGHT GAINED, So in this case we divide 60 by 50 to get 1.2 fcr, . If u have a lower fcr then you are doing very good lets say between 1 to 1.8 fcr ok but from 2 and above, you will run at a loss . Determining your fcr early will help you correct your mistakes either your fishes are runts or you are just wasting feed , and eventual loss. TILAPIA FCR =1.6 , CATFISH FCR = 1.2 , PIG FCR =3 , COW FCR =8 and CHIKEN FCR = 2. So if u ask me i will say catfish farming have the lowest fcr of all the animals ,so catfish farming should give more profit . If am a business person, and am asked which farming among all, should i go into. I will defenately choose the one with the lowest fcr . If u have fcr 0.5 then i need to come to your farm and learn , that means your profit is more than 100 percent . But basically a good catfish farm with a mind set of making profit should have fcr between the range of 1 to 1.5 , LITTLE TIPS, I ADVICE STRONGLY TO AERATE YOUR PONDS REGULARLY OR FLOW THROUGH OR CHANGE WATER REGULLARLY ,any of this 3 methods is ok ,cause what forms the tissue in your CATfish is the amino acid .And amino acid contains carbon; oxygen and nitrogen . So you get carbon from feed , nitrogen is free in the atmosphere so if u dont have oxygen concentration in the pond water ,you will not have a complete metabolism , that is why oxygenating is necessary, apart from the fish needs oxygen to breath they also need oxygen to form aminoacid which leads to flesh or tissue formation . GOOD LUCK Thanks Sir for the Insight. |

From my understanding of the 3 major African catfish species. Clarias is the one with the dorsal fin running straight to the cordial fin. While Hetro's dorsal fin stops halfway. With the adipose fine continuing to the cordial fin. My question is How do I identify a hybrid (i.e hetroclarias) ? please send pictures if possible sir. Hello,I've been following this thread for some weeks now.And all I can say is wow.... I could have failed if I hadn't gotten the knowledge I've acquired on this forum .. I'm in my final semester in school and I've been thinking on what to do after school because I've heard stories of school leavers who are unemployed. I want to start with 1000 fingerlings stocked in 2 9.8x8.5x4 ft ponds.2 further ponds of same size will be built before they reach 3 months at which they will be sorted into (250 in each pond) with 6-8 thousand liters in each pond. I don't want to exceed 1000 fish ... so they can have optimum space to grow to their potential size and attain a profitable weight.I have acquired a land with the help of my dad with borehole... I'm still sourcing for capital for equipments, stocking and feeding for 5-6 months. Question Since an aerator basically pumps air into the water. hence, increasing DO level. Can I modify the compressor of a refrigerator to be used for this purpose as it could be cheaper yet effective. |
