The Afenifere Renewal Group, ARG, has said President Jonathan’s attempt to woo Yoruba nation for the support of his re-election is already too late in the day.
The group, in a statement by its Publicity Secretary, Kunle Famoriyo, described the “Yoruba Progress Summit” which held last Friday as an afterthought and a futile effort to sneak the President into Yoruba land through the backdoor.
“For the past five years under his administration, Yoruba people have been deliberately marginalized and skewed out of national reckoning, especially in terms of key appointments and opportunity to partake in key sectors of the economy,” the statement said.
“We are surprised that President Jonathan believes the position of the Speaker, over which he has no control, is enough to atone for the deliberate marginalization in key appointments, over which he has control.”
“In any case, we do not need a ‘Progress Summit’ in Yoruba land. We already have a progressive culture based on democratic and egalitarian values. What Yoruba nation needs is how to be delivered from the retrogressive forces imposed on us by the Nigerian state. The Yoruba nation was well ahead in terms of development until the forced union called Nigeria began to steal our institutions from us. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), being one of the stolen institutions, is good only to address the need to restructure Nigeria, not for an effort to sustain the status quo”
The group said nothing will please Yoruba nation other than a return to regional government through maximum devolution of powers and a return to parliamentary democracy because “we reckon this is the best form of public governance that gives us the opportunity to develop at our own pace and contribute our quota to Nigeria’s development.”
According to the group, everything that happened at summit is a fool’s paradise as already proven by the students of OAU.
“Those Yoruba persons parading themselves as leaders of Yoruba people know that leadership in Yoruba land resides in treasured virtues of Omoluabi and Afenifere philosophy, not necessarily in persons. Yoruba people know their leaders.”
“We dare say that more than any so called leader at that event, those students, who braved all the odds to tell Mr. President the truth, are the true leaders, irrespective of their ethnic origin.”
“ARG therefore salutes the courage of those students who spoke truth in face of oppression and we enjoin every Nigerian to replicate their courageous act.”

Strong indications emerged at the weekend, that Senators, who were initially opposed to the extension of the emergency rule in the insurgency ravaged parts of North-East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states, are beginning to soft-pedal on their earlier hard stance that further extension should be rejected.

This is as the Prelate of the Methodist Church Nigeria, His Eminence, Most Rev. Dr. Chukwuemeka Uche, has raised alarm that the yet-to-return Chibok girls are being used as suicide bombers by Boko Haram insurgents,

The Senators, mainly representatives of the Senatorial districts from the Northern geo-political zones, had kicked against further emergency rule as the previous extensions approved by the National Assembly, had not achieved the desired result of containing the violent activities of the Boko Haram insurgents in those areas, rather the situation had worsened.

Northern Senators like Ali Muhammed Ndume (APC, Bornu South), Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan (APC, Yobe North); Kabir Garba Marafa (APC, Zamfara Central) and Kabiru Ibrahim Gaya (APC, Kano South), were in the forefront, early last week, in the opposition to the extension of the emergency rule.

Lawan particularly said: “Many of us are opposed to it; I am particularly vehemently opposed to it.

I believe that we should explore other avenues, but some other people feel differently… If they (Service Chiefs) are able to answer our questions, then we can take the next step”.

Another senator, Kabiru Gaya, in his reaction, said, “Many of us are opposed to it and I am particularly opposed to it.

“I believe that we should explore other avenues; but, some other people feel differently”.

However, Sunday Independent gathered at the weekend, that the hard line Senators have already caved in from their initial opposition to the emergency rule extension to support the idea, following pressure and plea from the Senate President, David Mark, late last week, who was said to convinced the irate lawmakers on the need to lend their support to the plans by the upper chamber to okay the extension when the Senate reconvenes to deliberate on the matter on Wednesday.

A top member of the Senate leadership told Sunday Independent that Mark also appealed to the opposition Senators from the All Progressives Congress (APC), who were sympathetic to the Northern Senator’s position, to consider the national interest, and unanimously support the extension when the issue comes up on Tuesday or Wednesday at plenary.

The rigid Senators from the North, this paper learnt, are now said to be also cooperating, following what one of them told Sunday Independent on Saturday, as “new insight into the efforts of the counter-insurgency federal forces in the zone, explained to us (Senators) during the week by the Security Service Chiefs when they met with us in a close door”.



The security chiefs, Senate spokesman, Enyinna Abaribe, told newsmen during a briefing shortly after the closed door session last Tuesday, were insisting that the emergency rule should be extended to enable the Nigerian military wage a successful war against the insurgents.

Sunday Independent gathered that following this new understanding, the Senate is set to approve President Goodluck Jonathan’s fresh request for the extension of emergency rule despite that fact that the House of Representatives had rejected it penultimate Thursday when the issue was deliberated upon.

Meanwhile, following Amnesty International’s (AI) accusation of perpetrating serious human rights abuses in the North Eastern part of the country, the Nigeria military has resolved to avoid such violations as they confront the insurgents.

It would be recalled that Secretary General of Amnesty International, Salil Shetty, had early in the month stated that the global body came to the conclusion that Nigeria was violating human rights following a recent trip by its members to Bornu State.

He said the group was in possession of gruesome video footage, images and testimonies it gathered during the fact-finding mission.

The materials, he added, had provided “fresh evidence of war crimes, including extrajudicial executions, and other serious human rights violations being carried out in North Eastern Nigeria, as the fight by the military against Boko Haram and other armed groups intensifies.”

The footage, obtained from numerous sources during the recent trip, he added, revealed graphic evidence of multiple war crimes being carried out in the northern part of Nigeria.

Shetty said the evidence “includes horrific images of detainees having their throats slit one by one and dumped in mass graves by men who appear to be members of the Nigerian military and the Civilian Joint Task Force, state-sponsored militias.

However, during a chat with Sunday Independent in Abuja, Director, Defence Information, Brig. General Olajide Olaleye, confirmed that areas of focus for the military apart from new operational tactics, are motivation of officers and adherence to human rights issues.

He added that efforts would also be made to ensure effective communication between soldiers and officers on the field and the Military High Command.

Although Olaleye did not respond to question on the specific area of changes expected when it is finally approved, he, however, said “the Army Headquarters believes that an effective two-way vertical and horizontal communication can benefit the system immensely, especially as we confront the nation’s security challenges.”

While officers and soldiers who excel would be rewarded for such acts of gallantry, he stressed that those who flout or involve in act of mutiny would be punished to instill discipline in the system.
A military source told Sunday Independent that efforts would also be geared at ensuring proactiveness through collaboration with the locals and effective intelligence gathering.

The source also stressed the need for the military to find its way around the Boko Haram politics and corruption, which have been major hindrances to success of the war against terrorism in the North East.

Meanwhile, the Methodist Prelate, Uche, who spoke to Sunday Independent at the weekend in Lagos, warned that considering the increasing number of attacks by female suicide bombers in the troubled North East zone, the abducted Chibok girls might have been used by the sect for destructive missions.
Uche suggested that the girls could have been hypnotised and left with no option, but to kill themselves during suicide missions.

THE drumbeat over the 2011 presidential election became louder at the weekend as former governor of the old Kaduna State, Alhaji Lawan Kaita, vowed that the North would make the country ungovernable if President Goodluck Jonathan wins the polls.

He said: “It is becoming apparent that the recent replacement of Service Chiefs is part of President Jonathan’s plan to use state apparatus to scale the 2011 presidential hurdle.

“Anything short of a Northern President is tantamount to stealing our Presidency. Jonathan has to go and he will go. Even if he uses the incumbency power to get his nomination on the platform of the PDP, he would be frustrated out.”

Kaita, founding member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and close ally of former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, warned that the North should not be blamed for the calamity that will befall the country, if Jonathan emerges President next year.

He said: “The North is determined, if that happens, to make the country ungovernable for President Jonathan or any other Southerner who finds his way to the seat of power on the platform of the PDP against the principle of the party’s zoning policy.

“Feelers from the South-South clearly show that the North is not the only region that is outraged over the situation. The South-East is there grumbling and the South-South, his (Jonathan) geo-political zone, he is not sure of their support.”

Reacting to the general thinking that the minority and Christians in the North are backing Jonathan, Kaita said it was a wrong assumption.

He said: “What you may call Northern Christians are concentrated more in Benue State where they may constitute about 90 per cent. In Plateau State, if you study that carefully, the Christian/Muslim population is 60 per cent for Christians, 40 per cent Muslims, so Plateau State is not an entirely a Christian State. The only state in the North that is substantially a Christian community is Benue State.”

Nigerians, he said, should be concerned over the prevailing political situation in the country because the North will not accept any government founded on any fraudulent foundation, which, he stressed, would definitely crumble, pointing out that “it should be seen by all as a stolen mandate that must be retrieved by all means”.

Kaita expressed displeasure over the event in Owerri, the Imo State capital, where the meeting of Igbo leaders was disrupted by security agents, saying such an action simply demonstrated dictatorship and disorder, “an indication that there is danger in the country”.

While recalling that he moved the motion in 2002 for the retention of zoning that gave former President Olusegun Obasanjo a second term mandate, Kaita said Jonathan did not say the truth over his comments on zoning, stating that he (Jonathan) was physically present and voted at the caucus meeting as he represented Bayelsa State as the deputy governor then.

To him, the motion for zoning was principally for power shift “which is the presidential power. That was the essence for the zoning, all other offices were to follow”.

“Just for the sake of power, Jonathan has turned to something else, its very bad and he is losing credibility for this.”

Kaita, however, said he was happy that some notable Northerners, such as former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida (rtd); Atiku; former Head of State, Major-General Muhammadu Buhari; former National Security Adviser (NSA), Lt-General Aliyu Gusau (rtd) and a few others are in the race to represent the interest of the North.

ADO-EKITI – CATHOLIC Bishop of Ekiti Diocese, Most Rev. Felix Ajakaye, has challenged President Goodluck Jonathan to call the former  Head of State, General Mohammadu Buhari (rtd), who recently threatened that the country would be bloody if the 2015 election was rigged, to order.
Ajakaye argued that the statement credited to the former Head of State was provocative and unguided and must be checked, noting that the former Head of State was in the habit of threatening the nation as he similarly threatened the nation that he would make government ungovernable for the president if the election of 2011 was rigged.
Speaking with newsmen in  Ado-Ekiti, yesterday, he said” “Nigeria belongs to all of us, we have no other place to go and we should watch our utterances, no matter our status.
”We are in a very trying time and we need to be prayerful and work our prayers; we need to be positive and concrete in our thoughts and work our thoughts.
”The former Head of State ought to have been invited by security agencies for questioning if we are in other climes. I don’t know what our security agents are still waiting for. No matter whose ox is gored, if another person had made such a statement, they will say he is planning something against the country.
“But, for making such a statement I will say that seems to be his character and we should not allow him and others to be saying that anymore, the laws are there. It was the same Buhari who said he was going to make the country ungovernable if the elections were rigged in 2011. But, again, it is because of the government we have, if we have a government that is very decisive, we would not be having such negative and destructive utterances from people.
”If a leader is decisive, something will have to be done, so that a leader is not decisive now they are trading words; we should not allow Buhari to ruin Nigeria because he wants to rule at all cost.”
