The planned ground-breaking ceremony of the proposed Industrial Gas park was postponed by the president following threat by the Ijaw community over the location of the park which did not go down well with the Itsekiri community, who accused the President of acting in solidarity with his Ijaw kinsmen. But addressing state House Correspondents, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr Reuben Abati said though the president is affiliated to the Ijaw ethnic group by birth, “he was elected president of all Nigerians and has always shown by word and deed that he will always uphold the oath he swore on assumption of office to protect and promote the interests of all citizens with Justice, equity and fairness”. According to Abati, “the postponement of the ground breaking ceremony for the project earlier scheduled for last Friday was not in furtherance of any anti-Itsekiri agenda. “Rather, it was borne out of the clear need to give all concerned parties more time to achieve the communal peace, understanding and harmony that will greatly facilitate the project’s speedy actualisation for the benefit of the Itsekiris, Ijaws, Urhobos, Ibos, Isokos and other Nigerians” he said. President Jonathan noted that the “elders, community leaders and parties to the dispute over the location and ground breaking event for the gas Industrial park who have resorted to threats and accusations of partisanship against the president in press conferences and paid adverts in newspapers are therefore being most unfair to him and doing a great disservice to continuing efforts to forge greater national unity and peaceful coexistence”. The statement further reads: “We assure all concerned persons that as the leader of the nation, President Jonathan is not and cannot be on the side of any party to the avoidable dispute over the location and ownership of the site of the Gas Revolution Industrial Park. “The Project itself was conceived for the benefit of all Nigerians, not just Itsekiris, Ijaws, Urhobos or other Ethnic groups in its immediate environment. “In terms of employment opportunities, it is projected that the Gas Industrial Revolution Park will ultimately create up to three million jobs for Nigerians in its catchment area and other parts of the country. “President Jonathan therefore urges all parties to the communal dispute over the location and ownership of the site oif the Gas Industrial Revolution Park to cooperate fully with ongoing efforts by the federal government and Delta state government to peacefully resolve all outstanding issues so that the project can proceed apace for the benefit of local communities, all Nigerians and investors. “In the greater interest of the nation, President Jonathan expects the respected elders and leaders of the concerned communities to heed the pleas of federal and state government mediators and expeditiously resolve their differences for the good of all and the progress of the country” the president added. |

Express concern over CAN’s role Gboyega Akinsanmi A sizable number of human rights and civil society activists at the weekend lamented that Nigeria had started disintegrating gradually due to what they attributed to the activities of Boko Haram insurgents. The activists expressed the view at a national symposium organised to mark the first memorial anniversary of Baba Omojola at Airport Hotel, Ikeja, under the chairmanship of former military Administrator of Lagos, Rear Admiral Ndubisi Kanu. The symposium was attended by the National Chairman of National Conscience Party (NCP), Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), former Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Chief Kofoworola Bucknor-Akerele and another veteran activist, Dr. Amos Akingba, among others. At the symposium, Falana said Nigeria could be overrun by the terrorists, citing the increasing attacks of Boko Haram insurgents in the Northeast, loss of some towns to the insurgents and the growing cases of internally displaced persons and refugees. The senior advocate observed that the Nigerian armed forces, especially the Nigerian Army could not liberate the country from the grip of the terrorists as presently constituted. He said the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) “has become an extension of Aso Rock Villa. The other parties are on the defensive. This is the first time President Goodluck Jonathan will lead delegation to Jerusalem when only seven per cent of the Israelis subscribed to Christianity. “The forthcoming elections are not addressing the issues affecting Nigeria. What is important for the ruling Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is to play up the religious cards. In 2011 election, what was used by the ruling party was the ethnic issue.” He said the military had been incapacitated by massive corruption and internal fraud to which trillions of naira meant for procurement of arms “have been lost due to lack of accountability. “As for the junior officers accused of mutiny, when I spoke with them, they said they are not guilty of mutiny. They want to fight and die for this country, but there are no equipment. “They are asking us to face Boko Haram insurgents that have sophisticated weapons. We are simply being asked to commit suicide. That is why they said they had the right to life. They did not want to die cheaply. “The soldiers are not saying they are not ready to fight. The money that has been voted for defence of our dear country in the last five years is N4 trillion. N968 billion was budgeted for defence in 2014 alone. “President Jonathan has come back for a loan of $1 billion, which is about N177 billion added to N968 billion in one year. That is over one trillion naira. At the end of the day, our soldiers are being sent to the war front without weapon to fight. “As of sunday, the $1 billion has not been processed. So, if we are not careful, the money is going to be diverted to fund the forthcoming general elections. What I think we should be doing like is how do we intervene before the collapse of our country. Already, the country is ground to a halt from the way the soldiers are moving. “There is no safe place anywhere because if Boko Haram insurgents come, our soldiers will simply run away. That is why it is easy for them to capture towns and villages in the North-east.” Also speaking, Akingba said people kept asking the national questions because Nigeria “is not working. Ethnicity and tribalism has ruined the unity of the country. The people must come together to salvage the country.” |

 Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, has warned President Goodluck Jonathan not to expect up to five per cent votes from the people of his state in the 2015 presidential election because he has nothing to show for the 95 per cent votes he got in 2011. Speaking with journalists in Benin City, the state capital, as part of the activities to mark his sixth anniversary, Oshiomhole said it would be wrong for the president to expect any vote from the people of the state when he has not justified the votes he got in the state in the 2011 presidential election. In contrast to his Edo State counterpart, Governor Liyel Imoke of Cross River State said at the weekend that his state remains a stronghold for Jonathan ahead of the 2015 presidential election. Oshiomhole, who was reacting to questions on the comment by the president that Edo State would fall to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2015, maintained that the people of the state would resist the plan to capture the state. He noted that, while Jonathan had released over N2 billion to the states controlled by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) from the Ecological Fund, but refused to give anything to the All Progressives Congress (APC) states. He said on many occasions, he had cried to the president on the devastating effects of erosion on the people of the state and that nothing was forthcoming from the presidency. Oshiomhole advised Jonathan to be civil with his choice of words and not to cause further violence in the country, adding that military language should no longer be used in a democratic country like Nigeria. “In 2011, 95 per cent of the people in Edo State voted for the president, this coming election, he will not get five per cent because he have nothing to show for the votes that we gave him. “When he gave N2 billon to PDP states from the National Ecological Fund, which is provided for under the constitution, funds that should be used for ecology whether soil erosion, wind erosion, desertification, among others, he gave to the PDP states where he lost the election in 2011, in Edo State where he won 95 per cent, he did not give us a dime. “Yet we have written to the federal government under PDP, over and over to draw the attention to erosion problem in parts of the state, which has destroyed schools, homes, farmlands and others. “Even the people of Auchi, led by their paramount ruler, the Otaru, have protested and blocked the Benin-Abuja highway to draw the attention of the federal government to the menace of the erosion that has consumed many homes and farmlands, yet that did not attract the attention of the president and I have raised it with him: our people voted for you why should you punish us. Must we be in PDP? Do we want a one party state in Nigeria? “Edo people voted for a PDP presidency but what are we benefitting? Nothing. Just the resurfacing of Benin-Ofosu Road for 15 years that is our reward. So when the president said he will win Edo State, I was wondering. We will fight back because he will lose deposits here. “The president’s choice of words for me was regrettable. No part of Nigeria should fall. So I am shocked by his choice of words. APC will be defeated in Bayelsa and Edo State, these states will not fall to PDP or APC but we will defeat them. We have to be wary of our language. “The language of our president must not be violent; we mustn’t borrow military language in describing democratic issues,” the governor said. On whether the APC would win the 2015 presidential election, the governor said the people of the state, who voted for Jonathan in 2011 because of his innocent look and his ‘Breath of Fresh Air’ campaign slogan, which he had long abandoned as a result of faulty advice from his aides, would not vote for the president. He said: “See, the last time PDP won, they had 24 million votes all over the federation. The opposition had 12 million votes or something like that. Part of the 24 million that the president got was from Edo. He is not getting it this time. “Part of that 24 million was two million rigged votes from Rivers State. I want to see the amount of armed forces he is going to deploy to rig to get two million votes in Rivers State. I just gave you two isolated examples. “In the South-west, he won a couple of votes and the south-westerners are asking what do we have to show for it? “In my view, what people voted for in President Jonathan was his gentlemanly outlook, his innocent look. I remember the campaign slogan was ‘A Breath of Fresh Air’, that was his selling point. “The Edo people bought into that selling point but some people around him have now convinced him that he needs to go tough. That he needs to instill fear and that is why his language has suddenly changed believing that if the commander-in-chief talk with fear, people will submit and that is why rather than talk of one-man, one-vote, now he says Edo will fall. “He also said so in the east, I think in Imo State where he said PDP would no longer be this generous. If people want to vote to remain in the dark, if that is the wish of majority of Nigerians, we’ll have to accept. But I will be surprised when the real question comes – when the real APC presidential candidate emerges. “I believe in terms of specifics on the economy, unemployment, an incoherent industrial policy, that 15 years down the road we are still importing petroleum product, we are still debating how much we use on subsidising kerosene. “Nigerians who want these to continue can vote for this same old dish of 15 years from PDP Nigeria which is clearly over ripe for change even in the interest of PDP people. We just need to have a change,” he said. In the meantime, Imoke, has said his state remains a Jonathan stronghold that will vote en masse for the president. The Cross River governor, who spoke with journalists at the Margaret Ekpo International Airport, Calabar, at weekend on his arrival from Abuja, said the government and people of the state were solidly behind the president’s second term bid. The governor, who chaired the event committee for Jonathan’s declaration last Tuesday, described the president’s declaration to seek re-election as a victory to democracy and constitutionalism. Laughing off claims that he's preparing to leave the PDP for the APC, he said nothing would make him quit a party of which he is a founding member. “There is nothing conceivable that will make me quit the PDP, a party that I am not only a founding member, but also brought the flag to the state. I will rather leave politics than quit the PDP,” he stressed. He said since he was not seeking any elective office, his preoccupation now was to play his part and ensure that the president is re-elected in 2015. Cross River State, he said, would continue to give support to the president even beyond the 2015 presidential election because the people believe in the transformation agenda of the president. |

This is why your declaration failed to resonate, despite the hired crowds you ferried to Abuja,’’ it said. APC said having weighed the President’s claims in his declaration speech against the reality on the ground, the party has decided to present to Nigerians the true scorecard of the President in the critical spheres of life, including insecurity, education, job creation, corruption, power sector and poverty eradication. The party said the areas of insecurity and job creation, which are intertwined, represent the biggest failure of the Jonathan administration, irrespective of its claims to the contrary. ‘’Today, after the Jonathan administration has spent $32 billion on security and defence, Nigeria is not any safer, with thousands of deaths, 221,000 square kilometres of territory captured by Boko Haram, 650,000 Nigerians internally displaced and also a daily harvest of death from ethno-religious crisis, clashes between pastoralists and farmers, armed robberies and kidnapping. ‘’To make matters worse, our once proud and globally-acknowledged military has been brought to its knees by lack of necessary fighting equipment, even with $32 billion spent. Adebomi said in Ado-Ekiti that the war could be won if the Federal Government was determined to introduce a hard stand. “There are several ways of wiping out the sect and end the killings. If government is determined to end Boko Haram today it will be achieved. “Who are those in the sect that dare face the government? But unfortunately, I suspect there are some bigwigs behind these people. “Mr President is being too gentle in his handling of the killings; but unfortunately, it is daily assuming dangerous dimension; gentility cannot win the war. “Although gentility is not a crime but Mr President will have to be more aggressive because this is a security threat to the entire nation. “Mr President will have to take a stand on the matter either to continue to tolerate the sect and leave Nigerians to be mourning every day with the several killings. “Mr President should give a matching order to the military to wipe them off once and for all. “Not until a strong stand is taken Nigerians may not be able to sleep with their eyes closed,” he said. Adebomi said the military had been doing a good job in the affected states but “they are fighting unknown faces and faceless groups. “Government will have to first identify the cause of the problem, the root, sponsors, as well as where and how these insurgents get their weapons. “The security agencies do not also understand the terrain they are fighting the war because most of them are alien to the battle fields. “They know nothing about the sect, how then will they fight such war and think they will win; it is difficult.” The U.S. captain said he led over 5,000 U.S. soldiers to war during the Pre-Mobilisation in 2010 and expressed optimism that the sect could be wiped out. He said that the sect meant nothing to the Nigeria security agencies if genuine commitment was there adding, “all they need is the Presidential directive.” He appealed to President Jonathan to read the riot act to the governors of the affected states or be made to face the wrath of the Federal government. Adebomi said that the President could also compel the governors in the states to account for each soul lost to the insurgents. “What am simply saying is that the matter deserves an aggressive reaction; enough of a gentleman approach, because you don’t dialogue with faceless groups,” he said. “The question we need to ask ourselves is: “When will enough be enough? I woke up this morning with this thought in my mind asking Nigerians when enough will be enough. “I ask the President when enough will be enough. I ask members of the Senate and House of Representatives when enough will be enough. “Is it not time the government declared full state of emergency in the affected region? “Since this insurgency, what concrete intelligence step has the government taken apart from fire for fire exposing ill equipped military men and women to excessive fire power of Boko Haram. “Let us ask, when will enough be enough? Nigeria is dripping blood on daily basis; it is time the government woke up to its task.” Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states have been under the attack of the Boko Haram insurgents, loosing several lives and property. In Lagos State, the frontline political parties, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), are ready to slug it out at next year’s governorship election. The two parties are relentless as they aim to outwit each other at the polls. In the PDP, the frontline aspirants have thrown their hats in the ring to clinch the party’s ticket when the primary is conducted. Though neither the PDP nor the APC has unveiled its flag bearer, tongues have been wagging to know who emerges as the parties’ candidates. One aspirant, whose declaration is giving the APC sleepless nights is Mr Jimi Agbaje. Agbaje’s return to the political scene in Lagos ahead of 2015 is a strong statement from the PDP, a development which is much likely to change the dynamics of the election. Seven years after, Agbaje is back, and this time with a mission to accomplish. Jimi Agbaje For several months, there have been speculations that he was gearing up to stage a return in the race to become Lagos governor, on the platform of the PDP. If the permutations are anything to go by, Agbaje’s eventual emergence as the PDP gubernatorial candidate will set the stage for what is likely going to be a two-horse race between the APC and the PDP, for who will become the next governor of the state. For Agbaje, the structure on which he contested the 2007 election has been collapsed into the PDP, which pundits propound puts him at an edge over other aspirants. A chieftain of the PDP in Lagos, Mr Olufemi Williams, said the party stands a great chance of winning the governorship election if it fields Agbaje as candidate. Williams said an Agbaje candidacy would boost the PDP’s chances at the polls. He said: “The PDP in Lagos is united. There is no question about that. All the leaders and members have seen the need to work together and win the governorship election which has remained elusive since 1999. In-fighting cannot get us anywhere and that is what APC has been capitalising on.” The PDP chieftain explained that having united all the factions, the next important thing is to look for a sellable candidate that enjoys popularity among Lagosians and match any candidate fielded by APC action for action. “Jimi Agbaje is the best man for the job. He is not a member of the party but we can convince him to join us because he has no party for now. Let us not deceive ourselves. I believe Agbaje is the man with the needed requisite to win Lagos for us. “He is still as popular as he was seven years ago when vied for the governorship slot and we all know he could have won if our election had been free and fair,” Williams said. |

The ACF said that if need be, the Federal Government should recall trained and retired members of the armed forces and other security agencies to execute the war against the insurgents. The group arrived at this conclusion following an emergency meeting held on Friday in Kaduna. In a communiqué signed by its Board of Trustees Deputy Chairman, Air Vice-Marshal Moukhtar Mohammed (retd), and the Secretary-General, Col. John Ubah (retd), the ACF urged the Federal Government to brace-up and end the destruction of lives and property being perpetrated by the insurgents in some parts of the North. The communiqué read, “The Board of Trustees and the National Working Committee of the ACF held an emergency joint meeting at the headquarters under the Chairmanship of Alhaji Adamu Fika, BoT Chairman. The joint meeting deliberated with great pains on the continuous deteriorating security situation in the country, especially in the North and consequently resolved as follows; “That the Federal Government should seriously address the spate of continued and increasing violence with consequent loss of lives and property, with the aged, men, women and children being dislocated and made refugees in their own country and neighbouring countries, and who largely remain uncared for. “That the Federal Government should brace up and bring an end to this unnecessary wanton destruction of lives and property. “That the Federal Government be advised to seriously consider the possibilities of using available trained and battle- tested reservoir of manpower of the retired Armed Forces and other security agencies to participate in bringing to end this current menace of wanton destruction.” |

Niger Delta youths, in their thousands on Thursday converged on Ibom Hall ground, Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital, to demonstrate solidarity with President Goodluck Jonathan’s second term project. Speaking on the occasion, chairman of the rally, Alhaji Mujaheed Asari-Dokubo, assured Nigerians of the combat-readiness of the Niger Delta people to tackle forces against the realisation of the second term aspiration of Jonathan. “This rally is the greatest assembly of our people. This is the powerhouse of our people and we are hereby sending a message to them that we are ready for them. Let them know that there is power in the Niger Delta and that this sacred son of our soil cannot be intimidated in our land. “Let them know that President Goodluck Jonathan is not alone in Abuja and that we are solidly behind him and, as such, the enemies will continue to plan their evil but their evil plans will not work because we stand for justice, we are fighting for that which is our own right. “They cannot fight an Ijaw man out of office. Let them continue to shoot and bomb but we will win them because Goodluck has performed better than any other President of this country. So, the 2015 Presidential election is a do-or-die affair. “Nobody can challenge an Ijaw man, you cannot challenge us. We do not kill innocent people,na hand we go carry catch them.As them de shoot, we go de collect the guns from their hands. So, the person we de advice them, mek him advice dem well because them go die”, Dokubo warned. He, however, urged the people of the Niger Delta to equip themselves with their Permanent Voter Cards so as to be able to vote in their brother in the first instance. Earlier in his welcome address, the coordinator of the rally and incidentally, the Legal Adviser of the group, Barrister Francis Francis Wainwei, said the event was organised to mobilise support for the Jonathan’s second term project and, therefore, enjoined the Niger Deltans to throw their weight behind the project.
