Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basket Mouth got more than what he bargained for recently, after he posted a joke that had ‘rape’ inclination.
Though the comedian has deleted the joke and apologised on his twitter page, but the ripples the joke generated has crossed the borders of Nigeria. (See a snap shot of the joke below)
One of the folks who felt slighted by the joke is a Zimbabwean writer/blogger, Barbara Mhangami. Barbara, who currently resides in the US with her husband and four daughters, lashes at the comedian in a piece she titled, “Mister Basketmouth, Rape is NOT a Joke!”

Excerpts,
“Dear Mr. Basketmouth. I write in peace, because war does not solve anything. Moreover I am desperate to communicate in a way that will get you to understand the gravity of what you did by sharing a horrible joke, whose punchline is rape.
Mr. Basketmouth I am hoping that by the time I am done talking with you and the 5000+ people who liked and commented on your “joke”, you will have learned something about rape and why rape is a sick, vile and criminal act and why making light of this scourge that has everyone of us who has a vagina living with fear, is cruel and hateful.
We are not safe Mr. Basketmouth because men take our bodies and they rip us apart without a thought to the life-long trauma that we suffer as a result of such a violation. Mr. Basket mouth have you ever had anyone violate you by doing as they pleased with your body? Have you ever had someone grab you, throw you on the ground slapping you and telling you to shut up, then proceed to tear your legs apart and force his penis into your anus? Have you? I think not because let me tell you Mr. Basketmouth, because if it were so, you could never make rape an issue for comedy. I know comedians like to poke fun at all things and the irreverence is often what draws laughs. However Rape is not funny and if it elicits laughter, which it did in some of your fans, then this is a sign of depravity and a warning to all women that we are not safe among men, even the ones who purport to love us.
Would your joke be funny if your mother your sister, your aunt, your daughter had been raped? If you daughter or your sister had come home with blood running down her legs because some brute had seen her, not as a human being with feelings and a physical body that hurts and bleeds, but as a vessel for his lust, his rage, his disrespect and his misogyny?
Would your joke be funny to you if you came home to find your 6 month old daughter barely alive because 5 men had broken into your home and decided that a baby’s tiny vagina was big enough to contain their five joysticks one after the other, muffling her cries with her burp cloth until she passed out?”
“…the fact that you think that you posted a funny joke means that you are also part of a huge problem that we face in this world, a problem that affects more than half the population. It also means that these statistics mean nothing to you and therefore African women and women in general mean very little to you.”

At the weekend, Psquare were at the Leaders Club grounds in Dar-es-salaam where they put up a superb performance – aside their stage craft, one act caught our attention.
At the concert, Peter Okoye, who recently got married to Lola Omotayo gave a wrist watch to a female fan (not the first time though).
But that’s not all – Peter did something that some Tanzanian fans considered a slight on his wife – the singer was captured passionately kissing the female fan.
If Peter was a Nollywood star, it would be safe to say it’s all about acting; since he is not yet one – what do we say?

Nigerians and other African nationals numbering about 200 blocked the National Highway 17 on the outskirts of Goa capital in India today in protest of the death of a yet-to-be identified Nigerian.
According to reports, the incident happened when a gang descended at Parra where many Nigerians stay - in four and two wheeler vehicles and attacked a group of Nigerians with weapons. Some of the Nigerians were on bikes when they were attacked. One was hit with a dagger severally that he breathed his last, while five others were injured in the attack before the assailants fled from the scene.
Other Nigerians, who rushed to the spot on hearing about the ghastly murder, refused the police to take the body for post mortem demanding that the assailtants be arrested first.
“The body was being taken to the Goa Medical College morgue in an ambulance when a mob of Africans stopped it and pulled the corpse out at Porvorim,” a police official said.
After removing the body from the van, the protesters dropped the corpse on the road demanding justice to be done – this led to huge traffic jam on the outskirts of the Goa capital.
Meanwhile, as the situation turned volatile, two companies of police personnel were rushed to the spot and some of the protesters were arrested.

Early Saturday morning, P.Diddy posted a picture on his Instagram page with the caption “As it should Be!!!!!!! #BlackIsBeautiful” – the photo shows a black woman standing tall in the middle of a group of awestricken white women.
Expectedly, the photo created a heated squabble on the photo-sharing platform…at the time of writing this piece, the pics has close to 50,000 likes, while others maintained that Diddy was a racist and that the photo itself promoted division, not unity.

21-year-old Nigerian model Precious Okeke has emerged winner of the 2013 Miss Black Africa UK Beauty Pageant – the event took place over the weekend at the Royal Regency Hall in east London.
The pageant, which started in 2011, saw 30 finalists from 17 African countries sail through to the finals. The judges opted for Ms Okeke after intense deliberations, while the first and second runners up were Alexina Phiri and Sonia Ike respectively.
Judges on the night included Adebayo Jones, Jenni Steele, Sporah Njau, Ini Edo, Kunle Lawani and choreographer Mr Fierce.

After being crowned by her predecessor, Samaia Tchapesseka from Angola, Precious stated that her mandate is to work towards eradicating child labour and poverty.
Miss Black Africa UK is open to young women from Africa that are resident in the UK and the winner becomes a goodwill ambassador for the Organisation in Africa working closely with their charity programme.

In an entrepreneurship competiton held at The Times Center in New York City recently, rapper and business mogul, Sean Combs, aka P.Diddy was on ground to speak with the participants on how to run their own businesses and being self-made bosses.

At the event, which was created by The Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) – an organization that empowers teens through entrepreneurship education, four finalists emerged. The finalists are, Juny Nguyen, Jesus Fernandez, Dagim Girma and Toheeb Okenla.

At the end, Toheeb Okenla and Jesus Fernandez, from South Holland, Illinois, beat out 38 teen competitors with their business plan for T&J Soccer. T&J Soccer is a manufacturing and retail business that sells soccer socks with pockets sewn into them for inserts that protect players' shins during soccer games.

Meanwhile, P.Diddy after a private coaching session with the top finalists donated $250K to the NFTE group for supporting teen’s entrepreneurs, while Toheeb Okenla and Jesus Fernandez-Ortiz were awarded $25,000 for taking the first place.

Switch, who currently lives in Abuja smiles home with $150,000 (₦24 million), an SUV and a recording contract with SONY music.
DJ Switch, who is the last of eight children, grew up in Warri, but hails from Udi, Enugu State, and she studied Geology at the University of Port Harcourt.

After a night of long evening gowns, tight swimsuit strutting, dancing, singing and, yes, answering those tough judges' questions (including ones about Miley Cyrus and Syria!), the contestants were narrowed down to one winner.
Miss New York, Nina Davuluri, 24, became the first woman of Indian descent to win the title – she was crowned the new Miss America on Sunday night in Atlantic City, New Jersey.
The beauty queen beat 52 other contestants, including first runner-up Crystal Lee of California, to win the highly-coveted title and $50,000 scholarship cash.
She takes the honor from Mallory Hagan, who won last year's competition.

Yesterday (Thursday) was a special day for Prince Mustapha Oniru of Lagos and his bride, Kirsty Crooks from Northern Ireland.
The couple tied the knot at a royal wedding in Loughgall Presbyterian Church, Northern Ireland – the Prince’s father HRM Oba Idowu Abiodun Oniru and Queen Olori Arike Oniru attended the service which was conducted by Rev Philip McKelvey.
The royal couple are due to travel to Monaco and then St Tropez for their honeymoon, but plan to set up a base in Northern Ireland.
Kirsty met Mustapha while teaching at the British International School, which is owned by Oba Oniru. Meanwhile, her husband, who just finished a Masters Degree in Marketing, is the school administrator.

In a bid to raise awareness and end childhood obesity, US first lady, Michelle Obama will release a hip-hop album that is set to hit stores in September.
According to reports, the 19-track album would be titled ‘Health Songs for a Healthier America,’ the album will promote the First Lady's "Let's Move!" campaign, which works to combat obesity among children.
Obama would collaborate with Hip Hop Public Health (an institute founded by Dr Olajide Williams) and will also team up with Partnership for a Healthier America.
Although she will not be found singing or rapping in the album, the record will feature big names like Jordin Sparks, Travis Barker, Run DMC, Doug E. Fresh and Monifah.
A single, titled 'Everybody', taken from the album was released last month and features former American Idol Jordin Sparks and Doug E. Fresh.
"Throughout history, music has been a great teacher and motivator, from ABC's and nursery rhymes to religious hymns and national anthems," said Olajide Williams, founder and president of Hip Hop Public Health."It is time to harness this power for health."

Call her controversial, that won’t stop the Director of “I sing of a well” and “Sinking Sands”, Leila Djansi from speaking her mind whenever she wants to. In her recent post, the 32-year-old American/Ghanaian filmmaker took a swipe at Nollywood and Ghollywood stars – she described them as being materialistic, having awkward diction and that they embark on needless vacation just to cover their insecurity.

Here’s her unedited post:

"Do quote me anywhere on this. It’s about time someone said this. My fellow film industry folks in Ghana and Nigeria, especially actors. Enough with the cars, shoes, bags, clothes and needless vacations. You don’t do these cos you deserve them but cos of the need to show off and that’s some high level of insecurity you need checked. You spend money you make from doing some crappy material on designers who take that money, go on vacations with their fellow men, whom they have married and have sex with or fellow women… (None of my business tho. Just sayin’). Instead of sitting by the TV and acquiring an american accent, or seeing your friend off to the airport and going back home doing ‘innit or yeah mehnn’, or heck, traveling to Atlanta for 2 weeks and returning with a New York accent why not spend that money on accent elimination classes? Or invest in a simple program like Rosetta Stone, which helps you become versatile. It is hard to market African films to the world because the diction is so awkward. Actors don’t speak English comfortably. They prefer make-up and clothes to character enhancing. They can already imagine the red carpets and star treatment. It’s making movie making difficult! Learn from people like Idris Elba, Nicole Kidman, Charlize Theron, Thandie Newton.

Omo baba olowo has done it again. According to reports, aside his superb performance on stage at the Boombaataa Festival in Kenya last weekend; Davido also had a great romp with a Kenyan socialite Staciey Brianar aka Pendo.
In a telephone chat with Ghafla.co.ke, Pendo said the Gobe crooner is the best you never had, that he is much better than your average Kenyan.

Nali: So what is all this wahala about Davido blocking you off of his facebook?
Pendo: If people had done even a little research, they would know Davido does not even have a Facebook account. I NEVER said I was in touch with him through Facebook. I got in touch with him through a good friend of his and that's where everything started. He did the intro.

Nali: So why did you do this? Do you do this for money?
Pendo: (Laughs) No, I didn't get money from him. I didn't WANT money from him. I did it simply cuz I find him hot and he is pretty legit in the music industry in Africa. Yeah, I am attracted by his talent, his fame, his power, but honestly, who isn't? And people are talking so much because a lot of women wanted to be in my shoes, but were not. I'm not afraid to go after what I want.
That's just me. And I am unapologetic for it. I am content that I got what I wanted -which was to know him- and I guess it just naturally progressed from there...

Nali: So was this a one time thing then?
Pendo: No, I would do it again. Gladly, I don't regret it at all.

Nali: Of course you know now I am gonna ask about the "". Free reign, choose your own words to describe it.
Pendo: He was perfect.

Nali: Nooooooooo, more than that. DESCRIPTION.
Pendo: (Laughing) Ok, ok. Errrrrrrrrrrm, he is much better than your "average Kenyan". He is big. Both length and width. (Giggles) And best part is he REALLY knows what he is working with.

A Nigerian Website has Ranked Gayaza and Namilyango among the top 100 Best Secondary Schools in Africa ~ without knowing the criteria the research website used to rank the schools, this needs to be received with a grain of salt.
If you were to ask Ugandans what the best schools are right now, you would be assured of a heated debate.
But considering that the Naira Land website is pretty well respected in terms of its research (the interface design aside) ~ here is the list as they see it. South Africa leads with the number of best schools in the collection.

Olubowale Victor Akintimehin, popularly known as Wale has literally transformed the life of a Hampton University student, Lauren Pryor.
The part two Psychology student won the rapper’s scholarship through a local hip-hop radio station, 103 JAMZ, which posted the contest on June 18th.
According to Hampton University News, the female student was on the brink of not returning to the university due to financial hardship; however all that is news now.
Here is what Lauren said after winning the scholarship:

“I was on my way to a friend’s home in Hampton when I heard the radio challenge that the 25th caller would win the prize. The station said to call between 4 and 5 p.m. I called four or five times, the line was always busy,” said Pryor. “On about the 14th call I told myself to give it a rest. I was taking the phone from my face and had my thumb on the end button when I heard a man say ‘hello.’ I didn’t believe it. He told me there were millions of calls and he only picked up the phone 14 times nationwide.”

Pryor received her scholarship after being flown to New York to attend Wale’s “The Gifted” album release party at the Best Buy Theater.

Last week, 23-year-old Linguistic student, Miss Sherry Wangui Gitonga was crowned Miss World Kenya 2013 at the Safari Park Hotel in Nairobi.
From the day she was crowned to date, Sherry has not had it easy with her fellow country men – before she could settle down to her new status, she is already a victim of cyber bullying.
Most of her haters, who believe she doesn’t deserve the crown, took to twitter to blast the beauty queen – incidentally, their comment resolves around her dentition.

Genesis of “10 Rules for Dating my Daughter”

It all started on February 18th, 2013 when Alan Smyth (co-author of myfatherdaughter.com) wrote a funny story on his blog about the “rules for dating my daughter.” Through the power of Social Media, the story went viral with people trying to reach out to Smyth to find out how he came about the rules.
In Alan Smyth words;
“Some of the feedback I received was around the actual rules. I heard things like “Who is making the T-shirt?” “I need that shirt” and “Dear God, get me that shirt.” Now, I am not in the apparel business. I’m not even in the blogging business. I am a Young Life Regional Director trying to reach lost kids in LA. It just so happens that due to my experience as a Young Life leader and as a parent, I might have a thing or two to say about being a Dad.”

A law student from GRA, Benin City, Osarieme Anita Omonuwa has placed an official stamp on the common saying that Nigeria is blessed with the best brains in the world – on July 3, Osarieme bagged a First Class degree in Law at Reading University in the United Kingdom.
Miss Omonuwa, 20, who hails from Edo State in Nigeria, also received the 2012 prestigious “Chancellor's Award” of the university for her outstanding academic performance. With this feat, Anita became the first black woman to win the Reading University Chancellor's Award.
"I chose the University of Reading as my brother is a graduate and he loved the student experience. The unprecedented academic standard, diversity of students and above all the location confirmed my decision. Coming to Reading was one of the best decisions I have ever made," Anita said.

A forfeiture judgment was executed today against real property with an estimated value of more than $700,000 in Rockville, Md., that had been purchased with corruption proceeds traceable to Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha, a former Governor of Bayelsa State, Nigeria, announced Acting Assistant Attorney General Mythili Raman of the Criminal Division and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Director John Morton.
“Foreign officials who think they can use the United States as a stash-house are sorely mistaken,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Raman. “Through the Kleptocracy Initiative, we stand with the victims of foreign official corruption as we seek to forfeit the proceeds of corrupt leaders’ illegal activities.”
“This investigation was initiated by ICE’s Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Asset Identification & Removal Group (AIRG) in Baltimore, in an effort to recover the criminal proceeds from Diepreye Solomon Peter Alamieyeseigha’s assets, whose shell companies were convicted of money laundering offenses in Nigeria,” said ICE Director Morton. “HSI’s AIRG will continue working with the Department of Justice to seek to recover illicit proceeds gained through foreign corruption and to protect the U.S. financial system from being utilized by criminals.”
