personally I feel a good guard dog will bark at strangers no matter how frequently he hears noises.
he can differentiate between random outside noise and noise coming from people at the gate.
people can discuss and even play and pass the road in front of my gate but he won't bark except they make an unusual noise, once someone actually comes to the gate and stops there, even before they knock, he'll bark at them and run there.
even if he's inside the house, he can tell when a stranger is in the compound.
I've heard about the whole backyard cage thing but I don't believe it makes a guard dog, in fact dogs that were brought up like that usually bark at any small noise and movement when they are free which I feel isn't a pleasant thing
at least since he's used to random background noises I'm sure if he's barking then it's something I have to come and check out.
although when he was younger he used to bark anyhow, with time he started differentiating noises. now he knows the sound of our car horn and engine , before you reach the gate with the car he's already there waiting unlike if it's a random car, that one he'll just ignore it.
he knows the sounds to ignore and the ones that should concern him, the whole backyard thing just makes your dog nervous and anxious to sounds, if you want your dog not to be scared of strange sounds then desensitization is the best way to tackle it not locking them away from it.
if your dog is a guard dog, whether you lock it up at the backyard, front or inside your house he'll bark at an intruder when he spots one.

You've written well, I personally prefer letting my dogs loose anytime am home

As in looking at them locked up inside that cage doesn't make me feel good at all unless we've a visitor

Maybe true but a dog with good guard instincts would guard your house even if he sleeps outside everyday

Well when going for a security dog one thing we should consider is the line. We all know that rotts and Caucasians are very security conscious dogs but I've seen posts made by few people complaining that their rotts/Caucasian don't bark and all that.

This is what you'll do, start searching for a breeder with good stock. I mean a breeder who got dogs with good guard instincts then contact him, agree a specific price with him then sit back and either wait for the mating to be done, for the bitch to whelp or for the pups to mature before pickup time. Use this medium to work and save up some cash for the pup. The aim is to go for a good pup


I'd advice you to go for a gsd for easier bonding, good drive and training but if you'd like a pit then fine. A friend of mine would be breeding his female pit this winter, both his bitch and the stud to be used posses strong guard instinct which is a good thing. if you don't consider a gsd as i suggested but a pit then I'll help you get a good one with human aggression

One mistake you shouldn't make is going for a pure American pitbull terrier because they're specially bred and programmed-like to have zer0 human aggression but deadly to other animals and dogs, this type won't do any harm to a stranger even if he jumps your fence. I'm not guessing this rather this is the truth about a pure bred apbt.

4 tins of dallas canned food @320 each- N1280
A broiler (the one i blended) N2k
Pork spines- N1k
General meat, bone and marrows, cartilage and all that- N2k
A small bucket of thick liquid milk- N1k
Soya cakes, eggs, and them fruits I add to his meal- 2k

Total=N19,280

I didn't add his deworm, plate, medication, vitamins and local supplements, chemicals used in fumugation and cleaning up his cage and the environment to prevent ticks and flees

If i should add all these it would be double of that amount up there, I don't calculate the cost feeding and upkeep because it could lead one to depression or heart attack lmao (imagine what i spent on Gustaf yet didn't archive what i wanted in him )

What do you think of the cost of feeding and everything I've written?

I get the pork spines from an abbatoir close to my street, I didn't get any last sunday because I've some pork meat and pork ribs left in the fridge, will prepare them this morning before leaving for work because they can no longer stay in the fridge... The fridge is kinda faulty

Recent updates on spark and Rico No pics yet.Sparks Guard instincts is starting to kick in.I did a test run with myself this Afternoon.I wore a Jacket to cover my face and Act weird and Angry towards him..If it was before The would be wagging his tail like a fool.But this time he took a step back and charged at me but I had to unmask my self b4 he would pounce on me .

Another thing is his Behavior towards Rico when it comes to eating.E doesn't really behave wild B4.Normally both of them would pursue each other and eat each other's food till they are satisfied.But now spark turns to a beast Anytime he sees Rico eating.And he has his own o. he wants to eat other person own.. @vincentjk ureu need here

His guard instincts is beginning to kick in that's impressive after all that's what most of us pray and hope for. At least everybody will get to see the value in your dog and also for security reasons

Him being aggressive and wanting to eat rico's meal when food is served is what I'll describe as being "dominant". A dominant caucasian should be aggressive to strangers and other dogs around him, as in it's totally normal but it's now up to you to control him and put him in his place before things get outta hand (it'll be bad if it does)

As an alpha male he should be respected by Rico but you should teach him not to take her food by maybe reacting/pushing him away when he tries such, by doing that he gets to know that it's wrong to go after rico's food and he'd gradually behave himself when food is served knowing fully when you're around


One mistake you shouldn't make is serving Rico food then go outta that spot, spark might try to take rico's food which could result to a fight leaving Rico wounded and all that.

Everything in dogs has to do with teaching and training bro, like I said my dogs have never fought. I mean never before. They're all males yet play and have endless fun steady.
