Mayhem engulfed the 28-year-old Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) on Wednesday as hundreds of students threatened to burn down the university should the Governing Board make do with its plans to plant an unqualified Professor/Applicant to the seat of Vice Chancellor. The Professor/Applicant is a non indigene and was said to have secured the second position in the screening exercise for the seat of a Vice Chancellor for the institution, according our sources. Witness gathered that the one month screening of who will succeed Prof Francis Otunta saw Prof Friday Ekeleme (Abia) emerging the overall best with other 15 candidates trailing behind him. But the Governing Board on Wednesday decided to substitute his name with a Professor from Imo State who is behind him in the list as the new VC. Prof Ekeleme, it was said contested against Prof Hillary Edeoga erstwhile VC and emerged first during the interview. However, the boardroom and external politics then gave it to Edeoga as Senator Ike Ekweremadu reportedly used his influence to see him through. Nonetheless, during the selection that brought in Otunta five years, Ekeleme also vied and reportedly beat Otunta, but the combination of Edeoga and some powerful persons in the Presidency that included the late Abba Kyari also stopped him from being the VC. Ekeleme, a professor of Weed Science is from Abia State and has had a brilliant career at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA). During the recent screening, he was said to have beat other Professors/Applicants, but the Board, acting on the influence of an APC Senator from Abia State decided to upturn his victory. See Also Police In Akwa Ibom Kill 6 Car Snatchers, Recover Stolen Items Our reporter gathered that Ekeleme is suffering from a fight by three elephants (two united against one) as the Senator is angered that he is being backed by a chieftain of APC in Umuahia North and an APC Minister from Abia State. Because of this, he decided to back the Prof from Imo State to teach both Ekeleme and the two chieftains of APC a lesson, according to our sources. The APC Senator from Abia had boasted that he will upturn their plans by installing his boy. These academic fireworks were eventually let out of the bags and revealed to some staff and students of the university who trooped out en masse to demand that Ekeleme be announced or they would burn down the school. Following the tension that engulfed the university on Wednesday, the Board had to suspend the announcement of a new VC until Thursday, December 11, 2020. One of the protesting staff who wanted his name out of print said “since this university began in November 1992, Abia hasn’t produced only one VC. There are: Professors Placid Njoku (Imo), Ikenna Onyido (Imo), Ogbonnaya Onwudike(Imo), Hillary Edeoga (Enugu) and the outgoing VC, Francis Otunta (Ebonyi). Among all these, he added, only Onwudike is from Abia State. https://uchenwosu.com/2020/12/10/attempt-to-manipulate-the-vc-position-staff-students-threaten-to-burn-down-michael-okpara-university/

Abia State governor, Okezie Ikpeazu has directed for the suspension of his Chief of Staff (CoS), Dr Anthony Agbazuere with immediate effect. No reason was given for the suspension, but a source in the Abia State seat of power said Agbazuere’s suspension may not be unconnected with the invitation by him of the controversial Onitsha based pastor, Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, popularly called ‘Odumeje’ to the Government House, Umuahia on Friday. Agbazuere and Odumeje reportedly did some bizarre things at the Abia seat of power which included publicly spreading money repeatedly on Odumeje at the time the state is undergoing financial difficulties and the country is in recession. Both were also said to have danced continually in the office of the Chief of Staff, an event that provoked public outcry. It will be recalled that lately, Agbazuere had carried out as an officer under no control as he was said to have directed commissioners and senior officers of government and even threatened them with query. Sources close to the seat of power said he behaves like the governor and even goes on with huge convoy, accompanied by retinue of aides who continually genuflect before him. https://uchenwosu.com/2020/12/06/breakinggovernor-ikpeazu-suspends-his-chief-of-staff-anthony-agbazuere/

By Uche Nwosu, Along Umuahia-Bende Road, precisely at Isieke village in Afarata Ibeku, there lays a vast land earmarked for a stadium project during the regime of Col Moses Fasanya now retired. Col Fasanya, assumed duties in August 1996 in Abia State as Military Administrator. His posting to this God’s state was approved by the Gen Sani Abacha, the then Head of State. On assumption of duties, the Abia Administrator announced that one of the key areas of focus would be the construction of a modern and magnificent stadium in the city of Umuahia. His reason for that was that the Umuahia Township Stadium did not befit a town that has produced onetime Nigerian Head of State and Premier of Eastern Nigeria. He likened the stadium as a mere playground kindergarten kids which shouldn’t be allowed to exist as a landmark in the city. And indeed, one year after his assumption of duties, Fasanya made good his promise. With boisterous fanfare, he laid the foundation stone of a modern stadium at Isieke, Ibeku, about four kilometres from Umuahia city centre and about 20 poles from the military checkpoint at Isieke. Its architectural outlay was a masterpiece and a wonder to behold as one watched the outlay. A contractor was reportedly hired and he was said to have started some palliative work on the project. However, the acquisition of the land and its subsequent conversion to a proposed stadium didn’t go done well with Prince Benjamin Apugo who swiftly challenged the acquisition of the land in court and in military circles in Abuja. Nonetheless, the suit filed at the Umuahia High Court lingered until Col Fasanya was reassigned to the Military Headquarters, Abuja. Two months after the demise of Gen Sani Abacha, Col Anthony Obi was posted to Abia State on August 1998. He administered the state from May 29, 1999 when he handed over to Dr Orji Uzor Kalu. Kalu to Chief Theodore Ahamefule Orji. Surprisingly, none of their governments took special interest in calling for the files and resuming the construction of the proposed Isieke stadium. See Also Edo Governor, Obaseki Wins Saturday Governorship Poll Col Anthony Obi didn’t care a hoot; so were Orji Uzor Kalu and his successor, Chief Theodore Orji. Their governments didn’t make efforts to give Umuahia a befitting Stadium, based on a past deal already conceived by their predecessor. None of them thought that Umuahia as a state capital deserved a stadium of international taste and acceptance where high profile sports meets could be held. Theodore Orji, the supposed son of the soil (using the local parlance) couldn’t care a hoot either. Now, the mantle has fallen on the incumbent governor, Okezie Ikpeazu. Would he go the way of his predecessors? A project like a stadium, airport or new Government House will etch his name in the marble of history. Sadly, the incumbent helmsman, since he became governor, has pursued irrelevancies that have worried critical observers. Would he go out of his ways to hand over any of these projects as patting gift to a state that has produced the likes of Gen Thomas Johnson Umunnakwe Aguiyi-Ironsi, Michael Iheonukara Okpara, Senator Jaja Anucha Wachukwu, Commodore Ebitu Oko Ukiwe, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu, Professors Anya O Anya, Joe Irukwu, Kalu Ezera, Dr Alvan Ikoku, Dr Nwakanma Okoro, Chief Paul Omerenyia Ururuka and now Dr Ngozi Okonj-Iweala? Or would he go in the way of his predecessors; arriving, seeing but refusing to conquer? Abians are looking forward to taking possession of any of these high class projects and time to do it is now. The military provided the platform. Would he (Okezie Ikpeazu) take the bull by the horn or continue to laugh himself to scorn? https://uchenwosu.com/2020/11/28/umuahia-city-stadiumproject-of-1998/

A contingent of the Nigerian military on Wednesday morning allegedly invaded the country home of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). The house served as the official palace of his late father, HRH Eze Israel Kanu, who was the traditional ruler of Isiama Afaraukwu, Ibeku in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State before in his death last year. The traditional ruler and his Queen who also died last year following the invasion of their palace by soldiers in an attempt to capture Nnamdi Kanu, was buried the same the day, February 14, 2020 in the palace. No reason was given for the invasion, but Nnamdi’s younger brother, Emmanuel Kanu told us in a telephone chat that the soldiers were about 30 in number. It was gathered that the soldiers left immediately they entered the palace and did not utter a word to anybody. The frightened residents, including members of the Jewish Community were not able to ascertain why the soldiers paid the surprised visit to the palace at that time. Emmanuel however informed that the soldiers came in three army vans and later drove round the Isiama Afaraukwu Community, prompting people who sighted them to scamper away to safety. “They’re there, go and confirm he told us,”, assuredly. However, when we visited the compound to ascertain what transpired, a man suspected to be a devotee of the Jewish faith explained that the “unwanted visitors came here this morning uninvited”, adding that they left immediately they entered. “Thereafter, they patrolled round the community, putting fears to the lives of the now peaceful community”, the man added. Asked if they arrested or injured anybody, the man said they neither arrested any member of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s family, nor injure or arrested any of the devotees of the Jewish Religion. “They just walked away few minutes after they entered. Go and ask around, you’ll confirm what I’m telling you”, he said. A woman who stated that she witnessed the incident, confirmed that the terrified residents took to their heels as they sighted the soldiers and that they (the villagers) thought it was another invasion of Nnamdi’s resident. https://uchenwosu.com/2020/11/25/soldiers-storm-nnamdi-kanus-family-home-walk-around-and-left/
