The Cultural Empowerment Support presents the inaugural International Igbo Women Conference and Awards Gala Dinner in Haringey.

WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL IGBO WOMEN CONFERENCE & AWARDS GALA DINNER?

The International Igbo Women Conference and Awards Gala Dinner was set-up to celebrate Igbo women’s achievements and also address issues of equality, poverty and human rights. We aim to act as a catalyst, enabling the older generation of Igbo women to successfully pass on to the younger generation, factual information about their Igbo heritage.

The occasion will consist of both a conference and an awards gala dinner. Each year the Awards will not only be themed, but also highlight and support the work of an organisation/charity which works in line with the theme.

This year the theme is Domestic Violence, and we will highlighting the “Power to Choose Project” which is one of the subsidiary projects of this year’s chosen organisation, the Nchekwa Oha Advocacy Foundation.

WHAT IS NCHEKWA OHA ADVOCACY FOUNDATION?

With an event of this size there has to be a gate fee. We are holding this event in London, the city where cost of everything continually rises. Don't even get me started on the venue price LOL

Thankfully ICSN over the years has built a large network of extended family, friends who always come together to ensure this event as well as others continually to be successful.

This highly anticipated event has been going on successfully for the past 11 years. Last years event attracted over 600 attendees.

WHAT IS IRI-JI ABOUT?

Yam is the most important food crop in Igboland. Evidence of this is borne by the cultural significance attached to Iri-ji in Igbo land.

The traditional Igbo society is mainly agrarian. Emphasis is placed on farming and the cultivation of sufficient food to last until the next food harvest. Special emphasis is placed on yam cultivation. The traditional Igbo man takes pride in showing off his yam barn neatly stacked with yam tubers from top to bottom. It signifies wealth and success.

In the days of old, a common question asked by a bride’s father when a young man signifies his intention to marry his daughter is “how big is your yam barn”? A big yam barn means the man is hardworking and can take care of his daughter.

The Iri-ji (new yam) festival was described by Odumegwu- Ojukwu (erstwhile Biafran Leader) as the “culmination of a work cycle and the beginning of another.” It is a time of thanksgiving to God for making the farm yields possible and praying for good yields next planting season.

The Iri-ji festival is celebrated at different times within the various Igbo communities, varying from August until October every year.

Entertainment / The ICSN Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival 2013 & 15 Year Anniversary Celebration by Vintage: 6:54pm On Nov 03, 2013
I ended last year’s review of the 2012 ICSN Iri Ji Festival by stating "… Wait until you see what we have in store for 2013…" Judging by the reactions and feedback we have received from various attendees, I can confirm that we lived up to the hype.

This year 2013 being a landmark year for ICSN (15 year anniversary), meant that extra work and preparation was put into this year’s Iri Ji Festival (as well as our other social events).

This year’s Iri Ji Festival was not just solely about honoring our culture, and continuing the legacy of the New Yam festival, but also about paying homage, and respecting the lineage of our unique organisation ICSN, hence this year’s titled " ICSN Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival 2013 & 15 Year Anniversary Celebration".

The London Borough of Hackney was blessed for a second year in a row. Having still not gotten over the beautiful showcase of Igbo cultural pride we displayed last year, the Petchey Academy was yet again the venue for another splendid projection of the Igbo community London.

In our towns back in Nigeria there is usually an Iroko Drum, in every village that when hit summons the whole community to stop what they are doing, and congregate at a specific place to hear special announcements. In this case the drum of ICSN on the evening of Saturday 19th October was struck, and judging by the many that attended, the echo off the drum could clearly be heard, all over London, the whole of the UK, and even Nigeria.

Over 500 people attended this year, the most we have ever had. So many came that we even had to close the doors early. The usual transport issues played their role in delaying proceedings, but that did not stop this movement of Igboness overcoming these issues, enabling the Iri Ji festival to continue.

From the outset you could see that everyone had taken extra time in doing their outfits were ready for for the occasion. From the entrance of the venue you could see the incoming of the beautiful outfits, colours, textures, and fabrics, and more importantly the pride in the faces of those wearing them. You could see families wearing identical styles, mothers, and daughters wearing the same coloured head ties. Even the ICSN Executive Committee all had an executive team outfit this year.

Kelechi Ify, and his live band kicked off proceeds providing the soundtrack for the early part of the evening. Once the main hall was near full, the host for the evening Charles Emeka stepped up to kick off proceedings. Then it was ...NTA (LIGHTS) KAMERA (CAMERA) NGWAAMME (ACTION)

HIGHLIGHTS

We first paid homage, and acknowledged the various dignitaries who honoured us with their presence this year.

The high table comprised of various distinguished elders from within our community, many execs, and heads of Igbo community organisations.

Thank you to the high table attendees;

Mr Edward Wood (Director of Public Information House of Commons)

Mayor Cllr Kate Anolue ( Mayor of Enfield )

Chimzulum Ezigboh (ICSN President)

Chief Chidi Oli (Amandianaeze)

We were also humbled by the various VIPS who took time out from their schedules to support us, Imeela (Thanks) to the following;

• Nonso Anozie: Award winning Actor, whose resume consists of films like; Cass, Rock N Rolla, Conan the Barbarian.

Nena Ubani: Founder of Duchess TV & host of Tea With the Duchess, & Founder of Igbokwenu Radio

John Okafor aka Mr Ibu: Nollywood Actor/Comedian. He has acted in over 70 films, including Mr Ibu, Mr Ibu in London, and his latest Mr Ibu in Sierra leone

All the attendees were really proud of what ICSN had showcased to the wider community.

The various presentations/performances ranging from;

• The cutting of the yam by Eze Okosisi Edwin Ezeanyika XI of Uruala

• A presentation on "The History of ICSN" by Yvonne Ofonagoro (founding member of ICSN).She gave an eloquent presentation on the journey of ICSN from 1998 to present.

• Performance by Chuka Royalty (Hiphop/Afrobeat) gave the attendees that organic hip-hop mixed with Igbotic vibes.

• The presentation of ICSN Executive members past and present who to this day go out of their way to ensure ICSN continues to progress year after year. It was a beautiful site to see, past members still supporting the organisation, from the host of the evening Charles Emeka (former ICSN President), to Edel Meremikwu (former Kwenu Newsletter Editor), to name a few.

• The dancers from the Arochukwu Community UK put on a wonderful cultural dance, showing us how things are done in Abia State.

• Even the masquerade got the memo about the special occasion, as he done his job, plus some extra.

• ICSN Dance Troup aka Egwu Oganiru did not disappoint. Yet again they put on an amazing, and skilful cultural performance, showcasing their new moves, and steps which they have been working extremely hard on. They deservingly came out a new swaga, on the back of recently being nominated for Best Dance Group, at both, The NUBAA (Nigerian UK Based Achievers Awards), and the BEFFTA Awards 2013 (Black Entertainment, Film, Fashion Television, and Arts).

• We even had a special yam auction, which consisted of people winning both yam, and boxes’ of Indomie. This really wetted the attendee’s appetites, as Indomie is fast becoming a staple dish in many African homes.

• The arrival of John Okafor (Mr Ibu) really added something extra to the occasion. It brought home how far the ICSN has reached. He gave us a stint of his comedy, and showed off his dancing skills.

No Iri Ji Festival would be complete without the staple Iri Ji Festival foods; Yam Porridge, Powdered Yam, Fried Yam, Boiled Yam. We also did not forget the staple function dishes. Jollof/Fried Rice, chicken, beef, moi moi, plantain, fish, tripe, and pepper soup.

Once the main festivities were done, it was Dance Dance Dance till late night. This allowed people time to show off their dancing skills on the dance floor, to networking, to support the various business people who had contributed to making the Iri Ji a success, whether by sponsorship, or giving a helping hand.

Imeela to all of them;

The film introduces screen newcomer, model turned actress, Ngozi Thompson Igwebike in a leading role, with other fresh faces such as British lawyer turned actor Stephen Moriaty filling other roles in a film that is considered a surprising follow up to Emelonye’s hugely successful 2012 blockbuster, Last Flight to Abuja.

Despite the film having a micro budget, Emelonye sees this as an important film that makes his mother tongue 'Igbo' the star attraction. In his own words 'Onye Ozi is my humble attempt to contribute my little quota to the preservation of the Igbo language and to take Nollywood back to its roots’.

Onye Ozi tells the story of Metumaribe (Okey Bakassi) fresh into London with high expectations and a two-year plan to return to Nigeria a rich man. However, life in London with his new ‘wife’ Mkpurunma (Ngozi Thompson Igwebike) is not going to plan.

On one fateful night, TJ an old English man (Stephen Moriaty) is chased by masked men and shot in front of his eyes. As Metu attempts to help the dying man, he hands Metu an envelope and whispers a message as he takes his last breath. From that point on, Metu becomes involved in a psychological but hilarious adventure that will change his life and the lives of those around him forever.

Obi Emelonye says
'After the many successes of Last Flight to Abuja and The Mirror Boy, I felt that the time was right for me to do what I have been holding back for many years - to make a personal but important film that makes my mother tongue 'Igbo' the star attraction.

The origins of Nollywood can be traced back to Living in Bondage, an Igbo film subtitled in English. However, as the industry has evolved, films in other major Nigerian languages have made significant strides and Igbo language films have become an endangered species. Onye Ozi (The Messenger) is my humble attempt to contribute my little quota to the preservation of the Igbo language and to take Nollywood back to its roots.

It is a micro budget film and not one of the films for world domination. However, you can never tell. As my French producer friend once said, 'you have to be local, to be global'. This film will find its audience and its place in the very exciting African cinema terrain'

Onye Ozi, written, produced & directed by Obi Emelonye is now one of the most anticipated Nollywood movies of 2013. The visionary marketing team behind previous Nollywood Factory premieres is also again set to take Nollywood to the next level with a FIRST ever simultaneous World Premier and Global Online Release, giving fans of Nollywood all over the world a chance to enjoy the film at the same time.

It is anticipated that the unique online premiere of Onye Ozi will further elevate Nollywood cinema globally with a Nigerian premiere and cinema release scheduled to take place sometime in the coming months.

Onye Ozi is produced by emerging UK based film producer Emmanuella Ngozi Ideh alongside Obi Emelonye on behalf of The Nollywood Factory with the support of Nollywood Movies, M-Net Africa and Screen Nation Pictures.

Culture / ICSN Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival Review by Vintage: 11:34pm On Nov 19, 2012
The Igbo Cultural Support Network add a touch of Nigerian culture to Hackneys Black History Month

Never did the people of Hackney know that they will be spoilt twice this year. Firstly for being one of the official Olympic boroughs, but more importantly for being the borough of choice to host the Igbo Cultural Support Networks 2012 9th Annual Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival.

The Iri Ji (New Yam) Festival is an annual harvest festival that has been celebrated for centuries. It is a time of thanksgiving to God for making the farm yields possible and praying for good yields the next year.

On the Saturday 13th October ICSN joined a long movement of Igbo communities and organisations worldwide by holding and maintaining this important Festival. A Festival which is an important part of our culture, and since its inception, has become highlight of the calendar year amongst Igbos in the UK.

Many travelled from far and wide having to bear the typical London October weather, and transport problems. However once the 400 plus people entered the Petchey Academy (Festival venue) their moods were immediately transformed. They were all greeted and embraced into a warm, welcoming, and cultured ambiance, which set the tone for the night.

Before the Kola Nut had even been broken, you could sense the pride of Igboness in the air, emitting from the men, women, elders, and children, entering the venue in their beautiful, handsome, and cute traditional outfits.

No fashion parade in the world would of compared to the inflowing of various outfits colours variations, styles which all made their way into the beautifully decorated main hall. This was further enhanced by the soulful, and gospel sounds of Kelechi Ify, and his live band whose soothing, soulful music, created a unique and alluring atmosphere that served as the soundtrack for the whole night.

Once the main hall was near packed, and the eloquent Charles Emeka (host) stepped up to kick off proceedings, it was then…………….. NTA (LIGHTS) KAMERA (CAMERA) NGWAAMME (ACTION)

HIGHLIGHTS

The high table comprised of various distinguished elders from within our community, many execs, and heads of Igbo community organisations. Thank you to the high table members

•Chief Aaron Muorah (President of the Anambra State Union UK) & Obi Ezielo ( Secretary)

•Igwe Christopher Ejiofor, who served as Dim Chukwuemeka Ojukwu’s Aide De Camp (ADC) during the Biafra War(Author of the book “Biafrans Struggle for Survival”),

•Mazi & Lolo Moses Edomobi (representatives of Nsu Ehime – Mbano Community Association UK & Ireland)

•Mr Theo Ariri (Vice President of the Imo State Union UK)

We were also humbled by the various VIPS who took time out from their schedules to support us, Imeela (Thanks) to the following;

Christine Ohurugu MBE (Olympic, World and Commonwealth 400m Champion), Actor Nonso Anozie (Cass, Rock N Rolla, Conan The Barbarian,), who was previously a member of the ICSN Igbo Language School. Radio Presenter Princess Ifem host of The Princess Ifem Show/Igbo Africa, on Naija 101.1FM, and Nena Ubani Founder of Igbokwenu TV, Igbokwenu Radio (also host of 2 shows on Voice of Africa, and Guess Radio).

All the attendees left feeling they had received the right diet balance of education and entertainment.

The various presentations/performances ranging from;

•The cutting of the yam which was done by our elder, Igwe Christopher Ejiofor

•Educational presentations of a cultural significance; Cheta Ojukwu (former ICSN Exec ) on the importance and history of the Iri Ji Festival by Cheta Ojukwu, and Ify Ofomata on the Igbo Resource Centre.

•Mixture of musical performances; the poetic lyrics of Obi Iwumene, the conscious hiphop lyrics of Nonyerem, as well as the free flowing gospel soulful echoes of Amazin Ijeoma.

•The presentation of ICSN Executive members past and present who to this day go out of their way to ensure ICSN continues to progress year after year.

ADANTA who have become a yearly fixture of the Iri Ji Festival kept the attendee entertained, with their traditional combination of igbo cultural dances, and sequences.

The biggest applause though goes to the ICSN Dance Troup aka Egwu Oganiru whose debut performance at the Iri Ji Festival raised the roof. Under the tutorship of ICSN Cultural Exec Kaosochi Ezigboh the ICSN Dance School which started in August, has given birth to a new generation of inspiring young athletic, pioneering dancers. Egwu Oganiru’s segment whose routines, consisted of a contemporary Igbo dancing with a youthful energetic twist, got crowds rushing to the front to capture the moment on their cameras, and smart phones.

Being the Iri Ji Festival, yam featured heavily on the menu. Meaning that as well as the staple dishes, Jollof/Fried Rice, chicken, beef, moi moi, plantain, fish, tripe, pepper soup, etc. we also had a variety of yam dishes. These consisted of the following; Yam Porridge, Powdered Yam, Fried Yam, Boiled Yam, etc.

Once the main festivities were done, it was Dance Dance Dance till late night. This allowed people time to show off their dancing skills on the dance floor, to networking, to support the various business stalls who had contributed to making the Iri Ji a success.

Imeela to all of them;

It was an all round entertaining, and successful night. It was inspiring to see Igbos young, and old working together at different parts of the spectrum to create another brilliant Festival.

Wait until you see what we have in store for 2013

This much anticipated event has been run successfully for the past 9 years. Last years event attracted over 500 attendees.This years event will be bigger and better than ever!!

WHAT IS IRI-JI ABOUT?

Yam is the most important food crop in Igboland. Evidence of this is borne by the cultural significance attached to iri ji in Igbo land.

The iriji (new yam) festival was described by Odumegwu- Ojukwu (erstwhile Biafran Leader) as the “culmination of a work cycle and the beginning of another.” It is a time of thanksgiving to God for making the farm yields possible and praying for good yields next planting season.

The Iriji festival is celebrated at different times within the various Igbo communities, varying from August until October every year.

Culture / Igbo Language London Conference 2012 Review by Vintage: 6:24pm On Jun 04, 2012
The date 24th March 2012, may not mean much to you right now, but future generations will take note, and mark this date down as the day the fight back against the extinction of the Igbo Language commenced.

Spearheaded by Fr Chikwendu Anyanwu (Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, Nigeria), along with Louisa Egbunike (SOAS), Rev (Dr) Emefiena Ezeani, Mr Godson Echimba, and Dr Ndu Buisi Anike, the first ever Language Conference, which ran from 9.00am -5.00pm comprised of presentations by various dignitaries on different aspects, and challenges facing the Igbo language.

Below are an example of some of the areas that were touched on by some ofthe guest speakers;

Yvonne Mbanefo (Founder of Learn Igbo Now /The New Igbo Dictionary Project)

Topic: Exploring the use of Digital Media to Enhance Igbo Language and Culture Learning

- Her presentation was an overview of her own personal journey , detailing the various key periods in her life which would later inspire her to set up the Learn Igbo Now CD ROM/Books, as well as the New Igbo Dictionary Project.

- How in the UK she picked up the behaviour of scolding at her daughter in Igbo, yet petting her in English.
- Her disappointment at the lack of Igbo resources in Nigeria, which she was hoping to get for her daughter (aged 2) which led her to start using her skills in IT to supplement her activism in Igbo culture.
- How most Igbo language materials are mainly texted based, and the disadvantages of this
- The impact of the Biafra War on Igbos, i.e. lack of information being passed down from our parents about the war
- Importance of storytelling as a method of learning Igbo.
- Using Digital media: She recorded a 2 minute video on the importance of orji/kola nut to educate her daughter. (her daughter didn’t know the significance of orji until she watched the video)
- New Igbo Dictionary Project (6 months) . Aim of the project to update the Igbo language via collectively creating new words. The project was originally set to run for only 6 months, but has now been extended to November 2012.
- On the New Igbo Dictionary Project Facebook Group (which currently has over 1000 members) people are continually creating, and creating new words, phrases on a daily basis CLICK HERE to checkout the group.

Fr Chikwendu Anyanwu (Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri, Nigeria)

Topic: Igbo Language: In Search of Gatekeepers, Harmony and Direction

- The creation of “Gate keepers” for Igbo language
- Creating a standardised form of written Igbo.
- The problem he faced with the various Igbo states having their own interpretations for various words

Ken Agbugba (Igbo Teaching Initiative /Former Executive member of Igbos)

Topic: Organizing Igbo Language Teaching to Children in the Diaspora

- When he was in Nigeria is cousin would refuse to feed him unless unless he answered in Igbo
- What he done whilst Chairman of Igbos (brought 1 hour of Igbo classes into the monthly gatherings)
- His love for the old Nigerian films (the ones where the actors/actresses speak Igbo)
- He frequent particlaur Nigerian online Forums, and joined a Igbo Room where contributors had to write in Igbo, he was coached by a friend
- The interest in Igbo Language from people from other cultures, Sierra Leonians, people requesting Igbo Gospel Music
- Highligeted how the language issue is prevelant amongst young Igbos born and brought up in Nigeria, (i.e. when he took his children home (ages 5, and 4) they understood Igbo better than their cousins who were living, and were born in Warri, Delta State.)
- In 2010 He attended a Umi Igbo Conference hosted by a Professor Peter who spoke about the death of Igbo language
- After a few more invites to similar discussions, he and a friend set up a 12 week Igbo language course, at his sons primary school hall in Abbey Wood.

DURING THE 12 WEEK IGBO LANGUAGE COURSE

- He had 10 children in his class (ages 4-10)
- He would teach them using roleplaying, folk songs,
- He was not able to continue as he was not able to get enough adults who would have to monitor the children (hall rule)
- Many of the children who attended learned the various greetings, how to make basic sentences, etc

CHALLENGES:
- Lack of support from parents.
- Parents he apporached about the school would complain that teaching them Igbo would affect their English
- Many Igbo business owners would only vocally support the idea.
- 1 Hour a week wasn't efficient enough.
- Ken was paying for the weekly classes with his own money.

Other presentations that took place that day consisted of

- Mazi Godson Echebima Ahamefula! What is in a Name? The Igbo Experience with Reference to Societal Values and Igbo Cosmology
- Professor Baldwin Anyasodo (Alvan Ikoku Federal College of Education, Owerri, Nigeria) The Igbo Philosophy of Nkemjika: An Expression of Highly Valued Ownership
- C.O Ibelechie (Federal University of Technology, Owerri, Nigeria) Urban Children and the Loss of the Igbo Language: A Redemtive Approach by "Umuaka Igbo Taa" Entertainment Programme.
- Dr Ify Ogbonna (School of Law, Brunel University, London) Importing into and Exporting the Igbo Language: A Survival Proposal

The Conference all round was extremely informative. It was a reality check hearing just how much in danger the language is in, i.e. out dated resources, as well as the lack of a collective solution. However on the plus side it was inspiring to learn about the different methods people are using to combat this issue, i.e. digital media (youtube, songs, etc)

For further information about the Igbo Language Conference, i.e. planning meetings for future meetings, you can contact Louisa Egbunike via email on louisa_egbunike@soas.ac.uk

This is the first of many Igbo Langauge Conferences to come.

WE HAVE ALL READ THE HEADLINES ABOUT THE LANGUAGES POTENTIAL DEMISE !
WE HAVE SEEN THE CRITICISMS BY OTHER GROUPS ON VARIOUS FORUMS !
THE SEED HAS BEEN PLANTED...........NOW HELP IT TO GROW.

Greetings, This is a notice that you need to spread to your contacts. Just like we did last month, we will have another igbo twitter bomb on Thursday, 19th April, 2012. The last Igbo tweet bomb was very successful, with a lot of people participating. We want to surpass that this month of april. Please tell your relatives, friends and neighbours. If you will be too busy to tweet on thursday, you can preprogram your tweets in hootsuite (Hootsuite.com) and still join the conversation when you are free. Make sure that all your tweets will have #tweetigbo and #twitterigbo so that others will see what you are tweeting. If you are not familiar with using twitter, write us a comment below and we will show you how. If your written igbo is not strong, no problem we will translate some tweets. The video below will show you how to use twitter. Our twitter name is @igbodictionary. Follow us and we’ll follow you. Igbo will Live!

Literature / Re: I Celebrate You Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by Vintage: 12:57am On Jun 05, 2007
I got the book on Friday, and am up to page 113. Its very good. However I do not see the point of the white character at all. I like to viisualise the scene whilst I am reading, and the thought of Olanna (who I have already pictured in my mind as a beautiful GODDES, BEING USED AS A EUROPEAN PLAY THING SICKENS ME), ILL KEEP READING ON.
