Also, the government agency also instructs all network operators in the country to stop new SIM registrations immediately and disconnect all their customers who fail to link to the NIN in 2 weeks.

This has led to a spike in the number of people visiting NIMC registration centres over the weeks since no one wants their line disconnect. In fact, in many of these centres, people disregard Covid-19 safety guidelines. They have witnessed a crowd much more than what was expected and many appeared without a facemask.

The NIN enrolment is compulsory for every Nigerian and is used as a means to verify the identities of citizens. The individual NIN records are stored safely in the National Identity Database.
