Crime / Traffic Robbers Apprehended By Security Operatives In Oshodi (pictured) by vivianblog3(f): 10:57pm On Nov 15, 2015
The operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos Police Command, in the wee hours of today arrested three persons for traffic robbery in Oshodi area of Lagos. The robbery suspects, Adekunle Mustapha, 21; Popoola Olumide, 20 and Femi Amusa, 20, were arrested following the tip off from their victim, Olasunkanmi Oyelakin, who alerted the Police that his blackberry phone was stolen by the suspects during early morning traffic around Bolade, Oshodi
The victim recounted his ordeals to the Police: “I was on my way to Ajah at about 6:30 a.m, I saw Adekunle Mustapha passed by the bus I boarded. Unknown to me, he was monitoring me. A few minutes later, I noticed a missed call on my phone, and as I brought out the phone, Mustapha took the phone from me through the bus window and ran away. Because there was traffic, I made no attempt to struggle with him, but got down from the nearest bus-stop and I began to monitor him. I noticed that he had regrouped with his friends and one of them was telling him to hand over the phone he stole from me.

“I knew I couldn’t handle the three of them all alone, so I informed the RRS operatives who followed me down to the place where he was arrested”, Oyelakin explained

The visibly distraught Mustapha said that he was driven by frustration to steal the handset from him. “I am a bus conductor in Oshodi. I am from Ibadan and a secondary school dropout. I sleep in Ojuwoye, Mushin. I am an ex – convict. I don’t want to go to prison again. Government should please have mercy on me. I was frustrated into traffic robbery. I won’t do it again”, he pleaded.

Mustapha’s accomplices, Popoola Olawale and Femi Amusa said that although they saw Mustapha in Oshodi regularly, they were also bus conductors and not traffic robbers. They added that they were in Lagos to make money to buy their working tools having completed their apprenticeship.

Travel / One Confirmed Dead In Edo Road Crash, Hoodlums Set Five Trucks Ablaze by vivianblog3(f): 5:40pm On Nov 08, 2015
An unidentified man has been reported dead after been crushed to death as a Mercedes Benz car coming ‎from Lagos collided with a stationary truck on the Benin-Lagos expressway, in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State.

According to reports, the accident which occurred at about 9:30am on Sunday, saw the driver, simply identified as Iyare, driving apparently from the Lagos axis of the road when h‎e suddenly lost control drove the car into the rear of the articulated truck parked on a grass verge.

The victim was said to have been rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, UBTH, Ugbowo, where he was confirmed dead.
However, reports say the truck belonged to the Seven Up Bottling Company. It was reportedly stationed opposite the scene of the fatal accident.

Meanwhile, some residents of the area said that the driver may have been under a hot pursuit by customs officials, as the C class station wagon had no number plates and look quite new.

According to one of the residents, “The vehicle looked like it was coming from Lagos and was being chased by customs officials before it suddenly crashed into the truck. But the truck was not moving before the collision occurred.

“Imagine the impact of the accident. I don’t think he would have survived.‎”

But it was gathered that some youths ‎ who were said to have been bothered by the development, blamed the accident on the parking of the company’s vehicles on both sides of the road and consequently set five of the trucks ablaze.

They were said to have headed for the company premises but fled the scene, following the intervention of the police.

At the scene of the accident, ‎some police officers and officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, tried as much as possible to ensure free vehicular movement.

Smoke also billowed from one of the burnt trucks, while the smell of charred bottles ‎pervaded the air.

A senior police officer, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said no sooner had the driver been taken to UBTH than the youths, suspected to be hoodlums, set some trucks on fire.

The police source said, “As they (youths) brought him out ‎and discovered that he was dead, some took him to hospital. And the next thing was that they besieged the company and set the (company’s) property on fire.

“It took our intervention to prevent them from entering the factory.”

‎Mr. Ameen Adewale, the Toll Gate Unit Commander of the FRSC, confirming the incident, said the remains of the driver has been deposited in the mortuary, while efforts were being made to remove the damaged vehicle.

Health / Woman Delivered Of Triplets In Lagos, Dies Few Hours (pictured) by vivianblog3(f): 5:06pm On Nov 07, 2015
Obinna Nnanna’s joy knew no bounds last September 23 afternoon, when his wife, Ijeoma was delivered of triplets, two males and a female, after nine months of their marriage. When he returned home that evening, he was already thinking and planning how to put together an elaborate bash, as his resources would permit him to welcome the babies and their mother home; moreso, when the bundle of joy was coming just nine months after they got married.

They were expected to stay some days at Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Gbagada, since she delivered through caesarean section. However, the joy turned sour, as fate dealt a crushing blow on him, following the death of his wife about 3am the following day.

Obinna said it was the worst news he has ever received in his life, and thought his world had crumbled.

“She was delivered of the babies about 12pm on September 23. I stayed with them till 9pm, since the hospital management would not allow a visitor to stay with a patient over night, so I left. I was sleeping when my phone rang about 3am that I should come to the hospital immediately. I had to call my friends, one of them brought his car and we rushed to the hospital and by then, my wife was already dead. I asked what happened and nobody was able to tell me anything reasonable. Nobody could tell me what happened to her.

“All my neighbours visited her that day she delivered and she spoke with everybody and they promised to come the following day to see her, but the story changed”, Obinna said.

Narrating to Saturday Sun, the tragedy that is redefining his life, the widower said they got married on December 31, 2014 in Enugu.

“After our wedding, we stayed few days in the village and returned to Lagos to start life together.”

By the time their honeymoon was over, Ijeoma conceived. Obinna said she registered for antenatal care at a private hospital close to them, and by the time the pregnancy was going to the seventh month, she started developing high blood pressure (HBP) which necessitated her referral to Lagos State University Lagos (LASUTH), Gbagada Annex.

“We used the private hospital for seven months and it was discovered that she was having HBP. We were referred to General Hospital, Gbagada. She was on admission at LASUTH for one month until she was delivered of the babies. Her staying in the hospital for a month was at my instance. I wanted her to be there to have a good rest instead of being at home where she would engage and stress herself with domestic chores.

“After one month of bed rest, she delivered through caesarean section. She delivered on September 23 afternoon and died in the early hours of the following day. I wouldn’t know what happened; I can’t explain. I asked the nurses they said they don’t know, that it just happened all of a sudden.

“I was in the theatre with her; so we came out together to the ward. She wasn’t bleeding and the blood pressure was normal before she went for the surgery. There was no complication.

“Immediately she died, we took her corpse home and deposited it in the mortuary, and we are planning the funeral.

The babies spent two weeks in the hospital after their mother’s death, on the directive and account of the hospital management, in order to give them a close observation.”

Obinna is now playing dutifully the role of mother, except breastfeeding. With the help of good neighbours, he is nursing the babies in his room-and-parlour apartment at Alapere area of Lagos. He has learnt to change diapers, keep awake in the night and feeding them.

“Since the babies were brought home, I have been with them, and with the help of my neighbours, my friend’s wife and her mother, we have been taking good care of them. My uncle’s wife also came from Ilorin, Kwara State, to give a helping hand, but she has gone back.

“For now, none of my wife’s relations has been around; their major concern is with my wife. They are the ones causing the delay over her burial; they have gone to hospital to make enquiries over her death, may be they are not satisfied with the explanations. I have given them date for the burial but they are still delaying, may be they want to have their own date, and send to me later. We are Catholics, and are not supposed to delay burial. Before I travelled home, I met with her elder brother living here in Lagos, and he is the one causing the delay. My wife’s parents are dead.”

On how he is coping with the financial challenges involved, Obinna said, God is using everybody around – his colleagues in Idumota market, noting:“Everybody is contributing his or her own quota just to see that the kids live”.

On the issue of taking the babies to orphanage home for him to concentrate on his business, he said, he has received such unsolicited advice, but he is not giving it a consideration.

“Immediately my wife died, that was the initial suggestion by friends and some other people, but I turned the advice down. I said, I can’t do that. Why would I take them away? I want to be with them; where I would be seeing them every time. So, I don’t take the idea. They are two boys and a girl. The boy came first followed by the girl and then another boy. They have been given names: The first is Chibuike; the girl is Chinenyenwa and the boy is Chimezie. They are not going anywhere; they would remain with me.”

On how he would cope, considering that the people around him may have their own programmes, he said he would cope, as he has learnt to change diapers as well as feeding and bathing them. “Now, I keep awake all night. In the night, one or two or all them may be awake. Three of them hardly sleep at the same time in the night.”

To him, it is a great challenge, which he prays for grace to surmount, stressing: “I don’t want them to be taken away”.

On when he has time for rest, he said, “as you see me sitting now is because they are sleeping, that is my rest. Within a short time one of them may wake up.”

Obinna is from Amaigbo, Imo State, while his late wife, from Eziagho, Enugu State.

Business / Anambra State : Fire Destroy N200m Worth Of Property In Onitsha by vivianblog3(f): 5:38am On Nov 07, 2015
Tears flowed freely in Onitsha as fire destroys property worth over N200 million. The property was stocked in a three-storey building at Nkpor junction in Onitsha, Anambra State. The fire was said to have been caused by chemicals stored in drums in one of the three-storey buildings at No 1 Afam Uzugwu in Nkpor junction . An eyewitness, Mr. Clement Okeh said the fire started from a three-storey building and spread to other surrounding buildings before the fire service stopped it from spreading.

The Vice Chairman of Red Cross Society in Anambra, Prof Peter Katchy confirmed that one lady, who jumped from the three-storey building sustained injury and is currently receiving treatment.
Katchy said the fire was caused by explosion from chemicals packed in drums in the building, saying that the fire service from Okpoko responded promptly but the intensiveness of the fire, made them to alert another fire service from Awka to support them to put out the fire.

He, however, warned residents against keeping any flammable material or object in the house to avoid explosion or fire outbreak.

Some of the victims of the fire, Mr. Afamefuna Okwuora and Mr. Peter Nzele, whose flats were completely destroyed by the fire, said they lost property worth over N3 million, calling on federal and state governments and corporate bodies as well as good spirited individuals to come to their aid.

Crime / NAFDAC Destroys N5m Worth Of Fake Products In Enugu by vivianblog3(f): 8:40am On Nov 04, 2015
The National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has destroyed fake and adulterated herbal products worth over N5 million.

Enugu State NAFDAC coordinator, Mr. Ikechuku Okoye, who led a team that carried out the exercise, told journalists that the destruction was aimed at preventing and discouraging counterfeiters from venturing into production of unwholesome and fake products.

According to Okoye, the suspect operated an illegal factory along Okpara Avenue, Enugu, where he carried out the mixture of herbal product and sold to unsuspecting members of the public.

He further stated that “even if the herbal product is genuine, the environment where it is being produced, under a tree, beside a toilet, already makes it counterfeit; let alone faking another product (name withheld) registered by the NAFDAC.”

Meanwhile, the alleged manufacturer of the fake and adulterated herbal product, one Mr. Ugwuoti Aloysius has also been arrested by the police.
