Veteran Nigerian singer, Charles Oputa, aka Charly Boy, has said the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, will reclaim his “stolen presidential mandate” just as he did his “stolen gubernatorial mandate” in Anambra.

Politics / I Didn’t Visit Tinubu- Peter Obi by voiceoftheupcom: 7:01am On May 02, 2023
I didn’t visit Tinubu- Peter Obi

The Labour Party’s presidential candidate during the last general elections, Peter Obi, on Monday night, said he never visited the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, as speculated on social media.

He explained that the rumours and accompanying photoshopped pictures being shared on social media platforms are part of moves by the opposition to derail his objective.

Obi, who is a former Anambra State governor, made the clarification on Monday night during an interview on Arise TV.

“I never visited him (Tinubu). I didn’t. These are some of the things I have been telling you. They have turned the whole thing upside down. So, what they (the opposition) do now is think about what they are going to do to cause issues and what they are going to do to label him (Obi) this or that.

“If it is not labelling him (Obi) tribal bigot, or religious bigot when he is not speaking, they will find his family and check whether he has a lovechild and all sorts of things, including misrepresented identity among others.

“I didn’t visit anybody,” the former governor said.

He maintained that he was committed to the course of justice and was ready to pursue the case before the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal to a logical conclusion.

The LP standard bearer also clarified that he doesn’t hold United Kingdom citizenship.

He said even though he stayed in the country for some period, he returned his “unlimited residency permit” to the authorities when he was about to leave the country.

On his recent “arrest” in London, Obi explained that he was only stopped for a routine immigration check.

I was stopped for a routine immigration check and all these lasted for a maximum of 20 minutes. I was treated with all due respect. I was never arrested nor detained,” the former governor clarified.

He added, “I lived in the UK in the 90s from 1993 to 2005. From that time till now is a period of 30 years and I have never been questioned, arrested or detained in any country in the world.

“I have never been arrested or questioned in any manner. I have never committed any offence. So, what happened was a routine immigration check and that happened not less than 20 minutes and I was given all due respect by the authorities.” Makesense PM reports,

On the internal crisis within the Labour Party, Obi noted that there were no issues in the party and the reported crisis is just the “rascality” by paid agents bent on derailing the party to pursue justice.

“In the Labour party, we have no issue. Abure is our chairman and those things you’re seeing are just the handiwork of paid agents who are trying to create confusion,” he said.

Politics / Tinubu Promises Tough Decisions, NLC Ask For New Retirement Age by voiceoftheupcom: 6:31am On May 02, 2023
Tinubu promises tough decisions, NLC ask for new retirement age

President-elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, has promised to take tough and hard decisions to reposition the country for the benefit of the citizens and workers.

He solicited the people’s cooperation and support for his incoming administration in fighting poverty, ignorance, disease, disunity, and ethnic and religious hate, which he described as “common enemies.”

The President-elect said these in a statement to commemorate the 2023 Workers’ Day on Monday just as the Nigeria Labour Congress demanded that the retirement age for civil servants should be raised to 65 years and the length of service to 40 years.

The pledge by the former Lagos State governor is coming against the backdrop of the high inflation, huge foreign debts, infrastructure deficit, high youth unemployment and insecurity confronting the country.

In the statement titled, ‘President-elect’s solidarity message to Nigerian Workers on International Workers’ Day,’ Tinubu said his ‘Renewed-Hope Agenda for a Better Nigeria’ was a covenant he was prepared to keep.

However, the former Lagos senator revealed that the ensuing weeks after his inauguration would require doggedness as the public service reforms he hopes to implement would require tough decisions.

“My plans for better welfare and working conditions are clearly spelt out in my Renewed Hope Agenda for A Better Nigeria. It is a covenant borne of conviction and one I am prepared to keep.

“In Nigeria, I shall have the honour and privilege to lead from May 29, workers will have more than a minimum wage. You will have a living wage, to have a decent life and provide for your families.

“The days ahead will, however, demand better understanding and cooperation from all sides, because leadership will require that we take tough and hard decisions so that our people and all Nigerian workers can live more abundantly,” Tinubu said.

Tinubu demands cooperation

While extending a hand of fellowship to the organised labour, he assured that they would find in him an ally and fellow crusader for social and economic justice for all Nigerians.

He also promised to keep his pledge for better working conditions for the workers as espoused in his agenda for the country.

He noted, ‘’On this special day, as your President-elect, I extend my hands of friendship to the Nigerian workers through the two central labour unions – Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress.

“In me, you will find a dependable ally and co-labourer in the fight for social and economic justice for all Nigerians, including all the working people.

“Your fight will be my fight because I will always fight for you. My plans for better welfare and working conditions are clearly spelt out in my Renewed Hope Agenda for A Better Nigeria. It is a covenant born of conviction and one I am prepared to keep.”

Addressing workers during the May Day event at Eagle Square in Abuja, the NLC President, Joe Ajaero,  asked for a fresh retirement age for civil servants in the country.

Ajaero also called for a general review of core civil servants’ salaries to narrow the gap between other civil servants’ emoluments and those in other segments of the public service.

He said that the extension of years of service should go around, as it had been done in other sectors of the public service in the country, disclosing that only a few other establishments, including the core civil service, are now left out.

“We are, therefore, demanding that the age of retirement and length of service in the entire public service, including the civil service, be reviewed upward to 65 years of age and 40 years of service, ” he said.

Ajaero said that the union had, over the years, demanded salary review but had yet to receive the Federal Government’s attention.

“It is necessary to recall that we have continued over the years to demand that the salaries of core civil servants be beefed up to narrow the gap between their emoluments and those in other segments of the public service.

“They all possess the same educational qualifications and cognate experience on the job. So why the disparity?” Ajaero queried.

NLC on gratuities

On gratuity payment, the NLC president said union leaders had, on several occasions, presented the issue to the government without any positive response.

He noted, ‘’Fellow comrades, we have consistently presented the issue of gratuity payment to the government but nothing has been done in that regard.

“As you are all aware, the concept of gratuity payment to employees is predicated on the fact that those who have laboured for public institutions or private enterprises are entitled to the proverbial golden handshake from their employers.

“Thus, gratuity is a monetary benefit given by an employer to his/her employee at the time of retirement without the worker making any financial contribution whatsoever to the fund.” Makesense PM reports,

According to him, such a lump sum was meant to enable the retiree to finance any post-retirement endeavour of his/her choice.

Politics / Shell Removes 460 Illegal Connections On Trans Niger Pipeline by voiceoftheupcom: 8:32am On Apr 19, 2023
Shell removes 460 illegal connections on Trans Niger Pipeline

The Chairman of Shell Companies in Nigeria, Osagie Okunbor, on Tuesday, revealed that the international oil company discovered and removed 460 illegal connections on its Trans Niger Pipeline before the facility could be restored after it was shut down for one year.

Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria operates the TNP. It uses the pipeline to evacuate crude from oil fields in Rivers and parts of Bayelsa to the Bonny Crude Oil Export Terminal, as other IOCs lamented the grave impact of oil theft on their operations.

Okunbor revealed that the TNP remained shut for one year due to the massive crude oil theft on the pipeline, a development that also devastated the supply of gas to the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas Limited during the period.

This came as the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, announced the Federal Government’s plan to generate 5,300 megawatts of electricity from solar, as well as producing six billion litres of biofuel annually. Makesense Tv reports,

Osinbajo, Okunbor and several other executives of international and indigenous oil and gas companies, spoke in Abuja during various sessions at the ongoing 6th Nigeria International Energy Summit.

Responding to a question on what the incoming administration should address in the oil sector, Okunbor stated that the security of oil infrastructure should be given priority.

He said Nigeria was not short of frameworks and written documents on how to tackle the myriad challenges in the oil sector, stressing that the document on the Decade of Gas, for instance, had measures that would deepen the use of gas, but its implementation remained an issue.

“What keeps me awake today as regards my onshore business in Shell is the fact that we cannot operate a pipeline, and that’s what is responsible for the 60 per cent capacity. I think today that’s almost just how much gas we can supply.

“And this is because one of our key gas infrastructures – the TNP, was shut down for one year; we removed 460 illegal connections on that line. We just reopened that line. Today we are struggling to catch up with our first programme,” Okunbor stated.

The SPDC chairman said this loss on was often viewed on how it was affecting Nigeria’s oil production quota to the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries, but stressed that the situation was also having devastating implications on the supply of gas to the NLNG.

“So if you ask me what the number one issue has to be for the incoming administration, it has to be the security of oil and gas infrastructure. If you don’t fix it, then we have a huge problem on our hands,” Okunbor stated.

On the lack of will-power to execute recommendations in the sector, he said, “We know exactly what is needed, but it is that power of execution,  just that courage to get things done without obstructing facts, that’s really what is the ban of our challenges.”

He added, “So essentially, this is the way I would think we should all be approaching the incoming administration as relating to our industry. I think the issues are quite known, we just need to find the willpower to execute.”

The Managing Director of Nigeria LNG Limited, Dr Philip Mshelbila, also pointed out that 40 per cent of globally renowned gas firms’ capacity had been lying fallow due to theft.

He also stated that the lack of power to execute the recommendations and policies in various documents and laws of the oil sector had remained a challenge to the industry.

Earlier in his address at the summit, Osinbajo told delegates that the Federal Government was working towards boosting the country’s power generation and supply with solar energy.

He said Nigeria and other African countries were among the lowest emitters of carbon, but had some of the largest natural resources, stressing that the continent could do much more in developing its own agenda for a green future.

The Vice President pointed out that the developed nations were the highest emitters of greenhouse gases, adding that “if you are going to do anything, in terms of the green energy future, you should start from the low emission base.”

He added, “And that low emission base is here in Africa. We have the natural resources to do so. Therefore we should focus on our strengths today. And I think we have started that.

“Our energy transition plan calls for the ramping up of solar cells and we will be doing about 5.3 gigawatts (5,300MW) per year until 2060. That’s the plan and we think this plan is achievable.

“There’s also the production of over six billion litres of biofuels annually, and the transition of at least two million Nigerian households annually to cleaner cooking fuels, such as LPG and electricity every single year. These ambitions are achievable.”

Striking aviation workers to begin airport shutdown next week

Striking aviation workers, who disrupted operations in the country’s airports on Tuesday, have threatened to totally shut down the airspace next Wednesday if the government fails to grant their requests.

The workers, who had embarked on a two-day warning strike since Monday, were chanting solidarity songs at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, in the presence of heavy security personnel.

One of the unionists, Comrade Abdulrarak Saidu, expressed disappointment that nothing has been done to ensure that the conditions of service were implemented in the last eight years.

He also criticised the aviation minister for wanting to pull down offices of agencies and parastatals in Lagos State. Makesense tv reports,

According to him, the minister wants to turn his policy into law and lord it over the industry.

He said, “For eight years, conditions of service were not implemented. Sirika usurps the functions of the governing boards. There is no check and balance. They wanted to coerce us to come to Abuja, but we did not go for the meeting. No conclusions, and no genuine meeting with the government.

“He wants to destroy buildings in the sector for a roadmap that was not approved for Lagos. Even the one approved in Abuja for the aerotropolis nothing has happened there and he wants to turn his policy into law.

“When you are going in the next month, you want to pull down headquarters and leave nothing. After seven days, we go to a total shutdown. We will try to cut Nigeria away from other countries.”

Exclusively speaking  in Abuja, the Secretary-General of NUATE, Ocheme Aba, disclosed that the union had given the government until Friday to respond to their demands, after which they would meet and agree on the next line of action. He noted that the union was prepared to go all the way to ensure that their demands were met, as they had exhausted all other options.

“As we stated in our notice of strike, if our demands are not met, then an indefinite strike will be inevitable.

“We tend to give the government till Friday, and then by next week, if we do not hear anything, we will meet and agree on the next line of action,” he disclosed.

The First Vice President of NUATE, who is also the union’s Women’s Leader, Lucy Ukpen, told our correspondent that the unions were considering a full shutdown of schools across the country as they continue to demand better working conditions.

According to her, the unions are assessing the situation and will take the necessary steps if the government fails to respond to their demands.

Ukpen said, “We are planning for a full shutdown. We are accessing the whole thing. The leadership will look at it carefully and see the response from the government and if need be that we would go for a full strike, we will activate it.

ASUU raises alarm over N132bn unremitted funds by TETFund

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has raised an alarm over TETFund’s unremitted N132 billion, representing 41 per cent of the N320 billion authorised funds for revitalising tertiary institutions.

ASUU revealed that only 58 per cent of authorized funding had been allocated to public tertiary institutions in the country.

Recall that the Executive Secretary of Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund), Sonny Echono, disclosed on Wednesday that President Muhammadu Buhari okayed the disbursement of N320 billion to Nigerian public tertiary institutions to resolve some of ASUU’s complaints from the strike last year. Eyes Of Lagos reports,

The funds were intended to revitalise the Nigerian public tertiary institutions as part of the union’s four cardinal requests and a renegotiation of the 2009 government-ASUU agreement.

However, the national president of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, said the TETFund distribution ratio adds up to N186 billion when every public tertiary institution is accounted for, just 58 per cent of the total approved for release by the president.

The university don made this known during a Channels Television interview on Thursday, saying TETFund must account for the undistributed funds.

“What are we using that N132 billion [for], which is 41% of the total money? Is it for bureaucracy or what?

“We need a redistribution of this fund to ensure that it accounts for 90% of what has been approved to go to universities, polytechnic and not kept as bureaucracy or whatever,” he added.

Politics / Court Blocks Oyo Govt’s Accounts In Four Banks Over N3.4 Billion Debt by voiceoftheupcom: 9:04am On Mar 27, 2023
Court blocks Oyo govt’s accounts in four banks over N3.4 billion debt

A Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja issued an order attaching funds to the credit of the Oyo State Government and its agencies in four banks.

The order was issued by Justice A. O. Ebong while ruling on an ex-parte motion for garnishee order filed by the ex-chairpersons and councillors led by Bashorun Majeed, Bosun Ajuwon, and Idris Okusesi.

According to the Nigerian News Agency, the banks affected are First Bank, United Bank for Africa, Wema Bank, and Zenith Bank.

The banks were ordered by Justice Ebong to show cause why the order should not be made absolute.

The ruling on the motion marked: FCT/HC/BW/M/238/2023, was delivered by the judge on March 2 and a certified true copy was sighted on Sunday in Abuja.

The funds, according to court filings, are to settle the outstanding balance of N3,374,889,425.60 from the judgment debt owed some former local government chairpersons and councillors sacked on 29 May 29 2019 before the end of their tenure by governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state.

The garnishee proceeding, initiated for the chairpersons and councillors by their lawyer, Musibau Adetunbi, is in the execution of a judgment they got against the governor and six others from the Supreme Court on May 7, 2021.

The ruling reads: “A garnishee order nisi is hereby granted to attach the judgment debtors’ accounts with garnishees Nos. 1 to 4 in the motion ex-parte, for the purpose of settling the judgment debt outstanding in the sum of N3,374,889,425.60 as awarded by the Supreme Court and conceded by the judgment debtors in Exhibit 11 attached to the applicant’s motion.

“The garnishees (1st to 4th) shall file affidavits and attend court on the next adjourned date to show cause why the order nisi should not be made absolute.

“A copy of this order nisi shall be served on the judgment debtors as required by law. This matter is hereby adjourned to the 4/4/2023 for continuation.”

It was gathered that the judgment creditors have since effected service of copies of the order on the judgment debtors as ordered by the court.

Listed as judgment debtors with the Oyo State Governor is the state’s Attorney General, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Accountant General, the House of Assembly, it’s Speaker and the Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission.

The ex-chairpersons and councillors were elected in the election conducted by OYSIEC on March 12, 2018, for a three-year term.

Upon learning that Mr Makinde, who took office on May 29, 2019, had planned to sack them, they sued before the High Court of Oyo State to challenge the constitutionality of Sections 11 and 12 of the Oyo State Local Government Law 2001, which empowered the governor and the House of Assembly to dissolve LG executives in the state.

In its judgment on May 6, 2019, the Oyo state High Court declared Sections 11 and 12 of the state’s Local Government Law 2001 as unconstitutional, on the grounds that it violated Section 7(1) of the Constitution.

Despite the subsistence of the judgment, Mr Makinde sacked the chairpersons and councillors on May 29, 2019 and subsequently appealed the judgment.

The Court of Appeal, in its judgment on July 15, 2020, set aside the judgment of the High Court, a decision the affected officials appealed at the Supreme Court.

In its judgment on 7 May 2021, a five-member panel of the Supreme Court presided over by Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, allowed the appeal marked: SC/CV/556/2020 and set aside the decision of the Court of Appeal.

The court, which awarded a cost of N20 million against Mr Makinde, ordered that the ex-chairpersons and councillors, who were unlawfully sacked by the governor, be paid their salaries and allowances from May 29, 2019 to May 11, 2021 when their tenure ought to have expired.

In the lead judgment by Justice Ejembi Eko, the Supreme Court came down hard on Mr Makinde, who it found, acted arbitrarily and undemocratic.

Justice Eko said: “I will not conclude this appeal without commenting on the disturbing ugly face of impunity displayed by the Governor of Oyo State (1st respondent herein) on 29th May, 2019, tantamounting to executive lawlessness, outrightly and vehemently condemned by this court in the case of the Military Governor of Lagos State v. Ojukwu.”

He noted that, even before appealing the High Court judgment, Mr Makinde on May 29, 2019 “issued imperial directives dissolving all democratically elected local Government Councils in Oyo State in spite of the subsisting judgment of Oyo State High Court in the suit No. 1/347/2017.

“Series of applications were filed by the judgment creditors, the present appellants, to restrain, particularly the 1st respondent (the Governor), from embarking on the self-help designed to contemptuously frustrate the judgment of the High Court.

“He was not dissuaded. He proceeded in his imperial omnipotency to continue in his untrammelled, albeit invidious contemptuous, disregard of subsisting judgment of the High Court. makesense media reports,

“It is unthinkable that a democratically elected governor would embark on these unwholesome undemocratic tendencies. These tendencies no doubt endanger democracy and the rule of law.

“It is almost becoming universal phenomena that the democratically elected Governors have constituted themselves into a specie most dangerous to democracy in this country.

“They disdainfully disregard and disrupt democratically elected Local Government Councils and appoint their lackeys as caretaker committees to run affairs of Local Governments,” Justice Eko said.

Stop investing in Lagos – IPOB tells Igbo over recent alleged intimidation

The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has warned the Igbos to stop investing in Lagos State and return to the South-East region after the recent alleged intimidation during last Saturday’s governorship and House of Assembly elections.

The pro-Biafra group asked the Igbo to start making preparations for a mass exit from Lagos.

The IPOB media and publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, who made these known in a statement on Thursday, noted that in the interim, Igbos should form gallant groups to defend themselves from any physical harm.

According to the statement, IPOB vowed to confront henceforth any undue molestation of the Igbo in Lagos.

IPOB said, “The anti-Igbo sentiments, threat, attacks, and abductions of Igbo traders, residents, and businesses threatening them to vacate Lagos is a threat to the entire Biafra nation. Makesense media reports,

“It is quite unfortunate that Yoruba political, traditional, and religious leaders are keeping quiet on the raging anti-Igbo sentiments in Lagos, Nigeria, which shows that they are on the same page to forcefully eject Ndigbo out of Lagos.

“The bigotry and parochialism that politicians through their political thugs have recently demonstrated against Ndigbo has shown that the aged long bitterness can’t be healed.

One thing certain is that Ndigbo will vacate Lagos, and we don’t expect any mediation to stop such exodus as it’s bound to happen soon.

“At the interim, we encourage Ndigbo to form gallant groups to defend themselves from the tribal vagabonds and political thugs. The criminals and cultists recruited by the politicians pushing the Igbos and expecting us to react and we must respond to them shortly.

“We are going to settle the problem with Igbo and Yoruba in a way people will marvel and nobody should blame us. Igbos have been monitoring these criminals. Those behind these devilish activities against Ndigbo must regret their actions soon. Every Biafran must prepare to leave Lagos and don’t say we didn’t inform you.

“We are urging Ndigbo both men and women to prepare to vacate Lagos. Only a person who doesn’t have a place would be annoyed when your host asked you to leave his or her house. We acknowledge that many of you have built many mansions and markets in Lagos. You have a choice of selling those properties, mortgage them, or lease them while you journey to your fatherland for your safety,” it stated.

“IPOB will stand behind every relocation and development of international markets in Biafra Land. Therefore, we urge the newly elected governors and House of Assembly Members in the Eastern Region to work with communities to make land available in every province for international markets and industrialisation projects.

“Again, we have to be involved in making sure that our people bring back their motor spare parts and we expect other markets to relocate from Lagos to Igboland. We advise them to start it quickly. We are delighted that our people are realizing that Nigeria is not for them, and the thought of relocating their businesses back to the Eastern Region is long overdue.

“Those in Lagos should know that they are not in any way doing better than the businesses in the Eastern region. They should come back to avoid losing their precious lives and properties to the hooligans working for political conspirators,” it added.

Obanikoro demands return of N200m forfeited to EFCC

Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, a former Minister of State for Defence, told the Federal High Court in Lagos on Tuesday that he was forced to refund between N100m and N200m to the Federal Government under duress.

Obanikoro said this while testifying as the 12th prosecution witness in the trial of Mr Ayodele Fayose, the former governor of Ekiti State. Makesense TV reports,

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is investigating Fayose and his company, Spotless Investment Limited, for alleged N2.2 billion fraud.

The EFCC accused Fayose of taking N1.2bn from a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, to prosecute his governorship election.

The defendants were also alleged to have on June 17, 2014, without going through financial institutions, received $5m from Obanikoro.

But Fayose denied the allegations.

Obanikoro had, in his earlier testimony, told the court how he transported the cash in an aircraft and delivered to Fayose in Ekiti State.

He told Justice Chukwujeku Aneke that N1.2bn was deposited into the account of a company, Sylva McNamara, which was used to fund clandestine security operations aimed at preventing terrorists’ activities in Lagos State in two batches.

At the resumed trial on Tuesday, Obanikoro, while being cross-examined by the counsel for the second defendant, Mr Olalekan Ojo, (SAN), told the court that during the investigation of the case, he was invited by the EFCC, grilled and forced to refund N100m or N200m under duress.

Obanikoro, who told the court that after various investigations, the EFCC exonerated him of any wrong doing, added,”I was made to refund between N100m and N200m to the Federal Government under duress.

“I have instructed his lawyers, to write the EFCC for the return of the money he allegedly refunded under duress,” he said.

How I curbed vote-buying – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari, explained how he curbed vote-buying in the February 25 and March 18 elections.

Buhari narrated how he told the electorate to collect money from candidates that offered money to them to buy their votes but vote according to their conscience.

The president expressed satisfaction with the remarkable passion towards democracy exhibited by Nigerians through the choices they made in the presidential, National Assembly, and the subsequent governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections.

He said Nigeria’s democracy had truly matured and Nigerians had proved to be capable of deciding who led them without anyone telling them what to do.

In a statement, Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, quoted Buhari as saying: “People are realising their power. Given the chance of a free and fair vote, nobody can tell them what to do. I am unhappy that some candidates lost in the election.

“But I am inspired by the fact that voters were able to make their own decision, to decide who won and who lost. With the currency change, there was no money to spread around but even then, I told voters to take the money and vote according to their consciences.”

Speaking at a farewell meeting with the outgoing United States Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard, at the State House in Abuja, Buhari said he was completely satisfied with his role in the election process. Makesense reports,

The president commended the outgoing ambassador for the enormous achievements recorded in Nigeria-US relations in the three-and-half years she had been here.

In an answer to a question posed by Ambassador Leonard, President Buhari said he planned to be a “big landlord” back at home, working on his farms and tending his more than 300 animals, adding: “I am eager to go.”

Health / United Kingdom Licenses 162 Nigerian Doctors In 42 Days by voiceoftheupcom: 8:43am On Mar 16, 2023
No fewer than 162 Nigerian-trained doctors were licensed to practise in the United Kingdom in the last six weeks, The PUNCH has learnt.

This is according to the register of the General Medical Council of the UK. The GMC is a public body that maintains the official register of medical practitioners within the UK.

Our correspondent, who monitored the GMC website in the last 42 days, observed that the number of Nigerian-trained doctors practising in the UK rose from 10,824 to 10,986.

This implies that at least three Nigerian-trained doctors were licensed per day from February 2 to March 15, 2023.

Nigeria has been faced with worrying brain drain in recent times, with many professionals, including doctors, leaving the country for greener pastures.

It was also observed that Nigeria has the third highest number of foreign doctors working in the UK after India (31,979) and Pakistan (18,490).

While the Federal Government claimed that brain drain is not peculiar to Nigeria, the World Health Organisation warned that this could negatively impact the health care system and hinder progress towards achieving universal health coverage and health security.

A 2023 health workforce support and safeguards list report by the WHO showed that Nigeria and 36 other African countries face the most pressing health workforce challenges related to UHC.

The President of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors, Emeka Orji, said, “There is a need for a review of the salary structure, and the government needs to work with the medical bodies to resolve their lingering concerns.”

Also reacting, the President of the Medical and Dental Consultants’ Association of Nigeria, Dr Victor Makanjuola, said the country needed to produce about 12,000 doctors annually to meet the required number of physicians.

Makanjuola said the disturbing analysis shows that nine out of every 10 medical and dental consultants with less than five years of experience plan to leave the country for greener pastures.

NCC Unveils New Unified Short Codes For All Mobile Networks In The Country (See List)

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved harmonized shortcodes (HSC) for the provision of certain telecom services to Nigerian consumers and directed mobile network operators (MNOs) to begin implementation.

According to the NCC, all mobile networks must fully migrate from previously disparate shortcodes to harmonized codes by May 17, 2023.

The commission stated in a statement signed by its Director of Public Affairs, Reuben Muoka, on Monday that the new directive is consistent with the NCC’s consumer-centric approach to telecoms regulation.

According to the statement, the use of harmonized shortcodes is intended to achieve uniformity in common shortcodes across networks.

Makesense Media reports with the development, the code for checking airtime balance and some other activities would now be the same across all mobile networks for the same function, irrespective of the network a consumer uses.

With the new codes, telecom customers using the country’s over 226 million active mobile lines can now use the same codes to access services across networks.

The NCC stated that;

CONSEQUENTLY, UNDER THE NEW HARMONISED SHORT CODES REGIME, 13 COMMON SHORT CODES HAVE BEEN APPROVED BY THE COMMISSION. THEY INCLUDE THE FOLLOWING CODES: 300 TO BE USED AS THE HARMONISED CODE FOR CALL CENTRE/HELP DESK ON ALL MOBILE NETWORKS; 301 FOR VOICE MAIL DEPOSIT; 302 FOR VOICE MAIL RETRIEVAL; 303 FOR BORROW SERVICES; 305 FOR STOP SERVICE; 310 FOR CHECK BALANCE, AND 311 FOR CREDIT RECHARGE.

ALSO, THE COMMON CODE FOR DATA PLAN ACROSS NETWORKS IS NOW 312. IN LINE WITH THE NEW DIRECTION, 321 IS FOR SHARE SERVICES, WHILE 323 IS FOR DATA PLAN BALANCE. THE CODE, 996, IS NOW FOR VERIFICATION OF SUBSCRIBER IDENTITY MODULE (SIM) REGISTRATION/NIN-SIM LINKAGE. THE CODE, 2442, IS RETAINED FOR DO-NOT-DISTURB (DND) UNSOLICITED MESSAGING COMPLAINT MANAGEMENT, WHILE THE COMMON CODE, 3232, IS ALSO RETAINED FOR PORTING SERVICES, OTHERWISE CALLED MOBILE NUMBER PORTABILITY.

THE OLD AND NEW HARMONISED SHORT CODES WILL RUN CONCURRENTLY UP UNTIL THE MAY 17, 2023, WHEN ALL NETWORKS ARE EXPECTED TO HAVE FULLY MIGRATED TO FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF THE NEW CODES. THE PERIOD BETWEEN NOW AND MAY 17, 2023 IS PROVIDED BY THE NCC TO ENABLE TELECOM CONSUMERS TO FAMILIARISE THEMSELVES WITH THE NEW CODES FOR VARIOUS SERVICES.

The statement added that;

THE INITIATIVE, WHICH IS IN LINE WITH NCC’S REGULATORY MODERNISATION PROGRAMME, IS ESSENTIALLY TO MAKE LIFE MUCH EASIER FOR TELECOM CONSUMERS, AS IT IS NOW EASIER FOR NIGERIANS TO MEMORIZE SINGLE CODES FOR VARIOUS SERVICES ACROSS ALL MOBILE NETWORKS THEY MAY BE USING, THEREBY IMPROVING CONSUMER QUALITY OF EXPERIENCE (QOE).

IN ADDITION, THE NEW POLICY WILL PROVIDE OPPORTUNITY FOR LICENSEES IN THE VALUE-ADDED SERVICES (VAS) SEGMENT OF THE TELECOMS SECTOR TO BE ABLE TO USE FREED-UP/OLD CODES FOR OTHER SERVICES, AS WELL AS ENHANCE COHESIVE REGULATORY FRAMEWORK IN KEEPING WITH WORLD-CLASS PRACTICES.

More Than 10million Nigerians Starting From 19 Years Old, Used Cannabis In 2022 – NAFDAC Laments

A statement from NAFDAC on Sunday said the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this during the launch and dissemination of the 2022 Annual Report of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and Precursors Report 2022.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) says 10.6 million people, representing 10.8 per cent of the population, used cannabis in the past year.

A statement from NAFDAC on Sunday said the Director-General of NAFDAC, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, disclosed this during the launch and dissemination of the 2022 Annual Report of the International Narcotics Control Board (INCB) and Precursors Report 2022. Makesense Media reports,

She said the report revealed that cannabis is the most commonly used drug, with the average age of initiation of cannabis use among the general population put at 19 years.

She said, “Cannabis use was seven times higher among men (18.8 per cent among men vs. 2.6 per cent of women), while the gender gap in the non-medical use of pharmaceutical opioids (such as tramadol) was less marked,” she said.

The NAFDAC boss said Nigeria would not support the trend of legalization of cannabis for non-medical use as Nigeria lacks the financial capacity to fight cultivation, production and illegal use of the substance.

While saying that the non-medical use of cannabis, contravenes the United Nations Single Convention of 1961, which classifies cannabis as a highly addictive substance, she said the Nigeria Indian Hemp Act as well as the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency,  NDLEA Act prohibits the cultivation, production, distribution, sales and use of cannabis and its extracts or derivatives for medical or non-medical purposes.

She said the NAFDAC, the NDLEA, the Nigeria Customs Service and  other stakeholders in the health sector, had promised to collaborate in fighting against illicit drug production, trafficking, and use. She said  narcotics and psychotropic substances are indispensable for the relief of pain and suffering, adding that they are,  however,  classified because of the potential for abuse and the need for medical use of the substance.

According to her, one of the control objectives is to ensure availability solely for medical and scientific uses while minimizing the possibility of diversion to illicit channels and abuse. Executive Chairman, NDLEA, Buba Marwa, decried  the upsurge in abuse of cannabis amongst  Nigerian youths, saying it has attendant negative effects on the society. He said the NDLEA conceptualised War Against Drug Abuse WADA  in  2021 to address the issue.

Marwa, represented by Mrs. Victoria Ekase, said NAFDAC had been ensuring that controlled drug essential for human survival were made available for use where necessary in line with the requirements of INCB.

Despite pre-election violence, residents troop out to vote in Ilesa

There was a relatively low turn-out of voters in Ilesa metropolis and its environs despite witnessing pre-election violence barely four days to election.

Many political analysts have projected that there would be no or little turnout of voters due to attacks and killings the town witnessed days before election.

However, the turn-out was low when compared to expected turn-out these polling units normally witnessed but still fair than the projected one due to killings and attacks.

Recall that there were reported cases of violence such as attacks, killings which led to death of some persons and injury of many across two major political parties.

Voters in some polling units came to booths as early as 8:00am while presiding officers including security operatives were at alert in units this reporter visited.

FCT: PDP, LP lose scores of members to APC

The People’s Democratic Party and Labour Party have lost scores of members in the Federal Capital Territory to the APC just 48 hours before the presidential and national assembly elections.

According to The News Agency of Nigeria, the APC welcomed the defectors on Wednesday in Abuja.

Frontline Tinubu supporters, led by Dr. Hawa Iyatu-Bagu, the National Coordinator of the National Mass Movement for Better Orientation, claimed that the development was proof that the APC would win the elections on February 25.

Iyatu-Bagu said that the organization had been in touch with the defectors for a very long time, saying, ”Today, those that accepted the truth have decided to follow the winning team.”

She said, “We have been going around canvassing for votes, and most of them here are only the leaders because if all of them were here, this place could not contain them.”

“So, we now ask their leaders and some of them to come here and make it public about their decision to dump the PDP and LP and declare their readiness to vote for Tinubu and Shettima.”

“With this development and what we have seen so far in the course of our campaigns across the nooks and crannies of Nigeria, Nigerians, especially women, are ready to vote for the duo.”

The coordinator also stated that the youths were ready to ensure the landslide victory of Tinubu, assuring the defectors of equal treatment.

According to her, the APC presidential candidate will reciprocate any gesture done to him with quality leadership.

Also speaking, the Deputy National Coordinator of NAMMBO, Ibrahim Umar, lauded the Tinubu support group for attracting the defectors into the fold of APC.

Umar said that the chances of Tinubu winning the presidential election were very bright, adding that Nigerians were eager to vote for Tinubu and Shettima.

Earlier, Mr. Titus Musa, a former PDP Youth Leader in Gwarinpa Ward, Abuja Municipal Area Council, who led defectors, said they decided to defect to the APC to vote for Tinubu.

He said, ”This is due to his record of excellent service in Lagos and his contributions to national development.”

”We are convinced by the APC manifesto, The Message of Hope.” APC is the way to go, and Tinubu has something to offer Nigeria.

“We have seen the light in Tinubu, and we are ready to join hands with him to move our country to the desired level. I believe the way Tinubu transformed Lagos, if given the mandate, he will do a lot for the country.

”Therefore, we decide to defect from the PDP to the APC together with our teeming supporters, compromising youths and women.”

On her part, the former Labour Party Women leader in Gwarinpa Ward, Ms Zipporah Bitrus, said that they left LP to APC as Tinubu and Shettima were the best for the country.

”Tinubu is a person who is always concerned about uplifting ordinary citizens.

“He had mentored many Nigerians and that is why we see the reasons we pitched our tent with APC.

Makesense Media reports that the high point of the event was the presentation of the APC flags to the defectors, symbolizing their formal integration into the party’s larger family.

“The argument has been made, issues have been joined and it is clear that only Atiku and Okowa are prepared to lead this country in a united manner. Atiku is competent, he has the capacity that we require today. We must not make the mistake of voting for APC again,” he said.

“I will not talk about Labour because their candidate was the governor of Anambra state, he was not able to conduct one single local government election.

“I challenge the Labour people to bring that record where Peter Obi was able to conduct a local government election, so how can he now be attempting to be president of Nigeria when as governor he could not organise local government elections? He is not democratic enough. In any case, his candidature is tainted by ethnic chauvinism and we know what that will portend for Nigeria.

“In any case, his party has not been able to even field enough candidates for national assembly elections. And in any case, they have not been able to muster agents over the 170, 000 polling units”.

Tambuwal asked the youths at the campaign ground to “ensure that they mobilise” their parents to vote for Atiku Abubakar in the presidential election.
