Prosecutors in New York have revealed how corrupt officers snuggles contraband substances into a notorious New York prison.

Two New York city correction officers also known as prison guards smuggled contraband cellphones and drugs to Bloods gang members on Rikers Island in exchange for thousands of dollars in bribes, according to federal prosecutors.

Krystle Burrell, 35, and Katrina Patterson, 31, were arrested Tuesday, April 5 after running separate schemes that involved different Rikers jails, the FBI said.

Between October 2020 and March 2021, prosecutors of the case said, Patterson meticulously planned dropoffs of contraband and received more than $30,000 from Imani Matthews, 25, and Ashley Medina, 24, two girlfriends of Michael Ross,a prisoner who was being held at Rikers island on criminal weapon possession charges.

Prosecutors say in one occasion, Patterson snuck in to Ross what she said were “4 black joints in 1 paper,” insisting to Matthews that “it better be wrapped so many times I don’t want to smell it,” prosecutors said.

On Nov. 10, 2020, investigators say they discovered nearly 50 grams of marijuana in Ross’ cell at the Robert N. Davoren Center on Rikers as well as a contraband cell phone, the feds said.

After the discovery, Ross was sent to solitary confinement, while Patterson was sent into a panic.

“Call me I gotta see you asap did he destroy the phone they found the phone and mad weed… they have the phone I hope he deleted everything,” Patterson wrote in a message to Medina.

Just 15 days after the bust in Ross’ cell, Patterson wanted to get back to smuggling contraband, prosecutors said.

“Tell him tomorrow if he ready to get back to business let me know,” she wrote to Matthews in a text message on Nov. 25.

Matthews and Medina paid Patterson through a money receiving app called CashApp, and Patterson was caught on video smuggling in bags of what prosecutors say was narcotics to inmates associated with Ross, the feds said.

Meanwhile the other officer, Burrell smuggled for Terrae Hinds, 28, another Bloods gang member, prosecutors said.

Burrell, a veteran of the Department of Correction smuggled Hinds two cellphones, one of which once belonged to her, the feds allege.

Burrell has also been accused of helping Hinds distribute narcotics while he was jailed at the Anna M. Kross Center.

Mattthews, Medina, Ross and Hinds have also been BB charged with bribery conspiracy in the case. All six defendants face up to five years in prison.

In a statement, New York city Correction Commissioner Louis Molina called the allegations against Patterson and Burrell “disturbing,” and noted that smuggling contraband is illegal and “puts everyone in our facilities at risk.”

“If these officers are found guilty they will be terminated and their shield numbers will never be worn again,” Molina said.

Health / The Health Benefits Of Eating Groundnuts (peanuts) by voiceoftheupcom: 12:57pm On Feb 14, 2022
The health benefits of eating groundnuts (peanuts)

It is important to remember that, to really reap the potential rewards of groundnut, consuming unsalted peanuts is best. High levels of salt have negative health effects, and can contribute to high blood pressure amongst other concerns.
The Health Benefits of Peanuts:
1. Peanuts are rich in antioxidants

A study in the Longdom journal found that groundnut skins are rich in phenols, a form of antioxidant. Like other antioxidants, phenols are powerful substances that protect your cells against the harmful effects of free radicals.

According to a 2012 study from North Carolina University, published in the “Journal of Food Science,” it was reported that adding a 5 percent concentration of peanut (groundnut) skins to peanut butter significantly increased its antioxidant levels without sacrificing taste or texture.
2. The nuts are rich in heart-healthy fats

High cholesterol causes fatty deposits in your arteries, which can eventually lead to heart disease. Groundnuts contain monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats that may keep the heart healthy, by helping to lower blood cholesterol levels.
3. Groundnuts are a high source protein

Protein is an essential component of our diet, since there are over 10,000 types of protein in our bodies. Peanuts have been shown to be an extremely high source of plant protein, and they are often incorporated into the diets of vegetarians and protein deficient people.
4. They are a rich source of minerals

Peanut is a rich source of minerals, including magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, zinc, calcium, sodium, etc. These minerals are essential to many processes in the body, and an adequate supply of these minerals minimises the risk of mineral deficiency diseases.
5. Peanuts are rich in folate

The high levels of folate in groundnut could make them particularly beneficial during pregnancy, since studies have shown that folate can reduce the incidence of birth defects and anaemia related conditions. (Always follow your medical practitioner’s advice during pregnancy.)
6. Groundnuts may help with weight loss

While peanuts are high in calories, they are also rich in fibre and protein, factors that increase and prolong satiety (the sensation of being full and satisfied). This means that having a small number of peanuts as a snack helps to reduce your overall food intake, compared to say the equivalent amount of calories consumed through a chocolate bar.
7. The nuts may have antidepressant qualities

Research published by the European Journal of Nutrition has shown that regular nut consumption resulted in a 66% lower risk of anxiety in men. This may be due to the high level of tryptophan in peanuts. Tryptophan increases the level of serotonin in the brain, which mirrors the action of some antidepressants, so it is thought that peanuts may also have a role in relieving depression.
The Beauty Benefits of Groundnut:
1. Groundnut may help with eczema

Groundnuts may improve inflammatory skin concerns like eczema, because peanuts boast a high level fatty acids, which may help to make your skin feel better, and look healthier by decreasing inflammation.
2. They may have anti-aging effects

Peanuts contain vitamin E, which is an antioxidant that may help slow down the aging process. Antioxidants work by protecting cells against the damaging effects of free radicals.
3. Peanuts may promote skin elasticity

Groundnut contains Vitamin C which is an essential factor in the synthesis of collagen, a main component in the structure of connective tissues. Maintaining healthy collagen levels helps to keep skin firm and elastic, so eating peanuts may help keep your skin looking young and supple.

It’s really simple to consume groundnuts by shelling and eating the nut inside, but as an alternative, you can also easily make peanut butter at home.
Peanut butter recipe ingredients

300 grams unsalted shelled peanuts / groundnuts
Pinch to 1/2 teaspoon sea salt
1 to 2 teaspoons honey
1 to 3 teaspoons peanut or vegetable oil, if needed

Peanut butter recipe directions

Roast the peanuts in the oven at 350F/175C/Gas Mark 4 for 3 to 5 minutes, then let them cool.
Add the roasted groundnuts to the food processor. Process for 3-4 minutes.
Add the salt and honey then process until combined.
Check the consistency, if it seems too thick, add oil, a teaspoon at a time until it is right for you.

Crime / Different Types Of Phone Thieves In Lagos by voiceoftheupcom: 9:10am On Jan 19, 2022
Different types of phone thieves in Lagos

Here are different types of phone thieves;
1. The Regular pickpocket

A friend at work, kept his phone in his pocket as he was about to get off a bus. When he got off, his phone was not in his pocket anymore.

The vital rule is never to leave your phone in your pocket. There are many instances where your phone can be taken from your pocket.

For example, your phone can be picked up when you are rushing to enter a bus, when you are getting off a bus or when you are just standing at the bus stop.
2. The rush to enter a bus thief

This is a skill properly perfected by petty thieves.

One day, I was at the bus stop in Ojota when a small yellow bus passed with the driver screaming “Maryland!” and more than 20 people rushed to enter the bus.

I was a casual observer because I knew my chance at getting a seat was hopeless. But as I walked towards the bus after the rush, I saw a lady was frantically searching for her phone. In the rush, her bag was opened and her phone was carefully lifted.
3. The pastor or imam who is also a thief

Here you will meet a prophet who knows everything about your life. “Yes,” he says, “You were born on a Tuesday, your mother’s name is Bisi, she is the only dark-skinned woman in your village,” and all such details.

How the heist will be carried out will be so skilful, you would have given your phone out unknowingly.

Perhaps, the truth will dawn on you when you get to your house.

This is why you should never answer anyone who asks you for directions. Just face your front.
4. The finders keeper
If you forgot your phone in a vehicle or anywhere else, it is only the grace of God that would make you find it again in that same spot.
5. The traffic or roadside robber
Imagine being stuck in traffic or walking on the road and suddenly a tout asks you for a phone while brandishing a knife or gun; there is nothing to do but to hand it over.
6. The home robbers

These ones are so bold to come into your home and ask you for your phone as if they bought it for you.

Extra care is required to keep your phone safe or in extreme cases you have to move out of Lagos to a saner city

Phones / Rugged And Addictive Memories From Old School Phones by voiceoftheupcom: 8:48am On Jan 19, 2022
Rugged and addictive memories from old school phones

1. Batteries that never die

This phone’s battery never dies [Wikipedia]

These days we buy generators and power banks just to make sure our phones are powered all day because our batteries can barely last a day.

In those days, we could go days without charging our phones, especially the almighty Nokia 3310.
2. Mobile games

Before social media, all you could do was receive calls, send text messages and play games on your phone. Those games like football, snake, sudoku were our relief from boredom.
3. Flip phones

Flip phones were for the rich [Cnet]

Flip phones had this special allure. They were the iPhone 13 of that age. If you had a flip Motorola phone then you were simply rich!
4. Nokia xpressmusic

Xpress music was for music lovers [Wikipedia]

By this time, mobile data was now a thing. If you had 10MB, you were rich and could download some music and games.

Xpressmusic phones were the coolest phone for music lovers. They also became handy when the social network 2go became popular.
5. Then came BlackBerry
Blackberries were the IT phones [Kickmobile]
This special phone had so many memories attached to it. People could access Facebook from their phones, they did not have to go to cyber cafes.

It took about 10 minutes to boot, and when the battery gets low, it says “Battery too low for radio use.”

Another fun part of BlackBerry phones was the BBN pin. People asked for BBN pins to chat with you and you even memorised it like a phone number.

It affected our lexicon too, we even started saying things like “ping” and “pinging.”

Now technology has moved on so fast from those humble beginnings, the things we can do with our phones now are limitless.

5 signs your relationship is strong enough for marriage
source: https://makesensepromotions.com/5-signs-your-relationship-is-strong-enough-for-marriage/

Let’s go through five signals that your relationship is strong enough for marriage.

It doesn’t feel scary

It’s very acceptable to be anxious about any major life decision. When you’re ready to get married, though, the idea shouldn’t intimidate you. It will appear large and bizarre, but it will not be frightening. It’s a good sign that you’re in the appropriate place to take the leap when you can see your future with someone and it feels natural.

You are completely comfortable with them

If you’re getting married, you need to feel at ease in every aspect. This includes being able to unwind and spend a night together, expressing your thoughts, and, most importantly, expressing your genuine emotions. You should also feel at ease being sick and a little gross in front of your partner, as well as being comfortable taking care of them when they are ill.

Your communication skills are in great shape

Strong communication is the only ability that will prepare you for getting engaged or married better than any other skill. Although this is certainly vital, communication is more than just feeling that what you’re saying is being heard and considered. You’ll be better able to deal with whatever comes your way if you can communicate. When you have strong communication, anything that can happen gets a lot easier.

You’ve hit rough spots and gotten through them

When a couple never fights, it’s either because one (or both) of you is hiding your feelings and deferring to the other. Alternatively, it could indicate that you haven’t been together long enough to understand how to deal with stress. When you have courteous arguments with each other and get over the issue, you can learn a great deal about each other.

People are asking

If others start asking if you’re engaged, especially those you care about and trust, it could be a sign that you act and appear like a couple who really should be engaged.

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Wednesday reopened its Olusosun Landfill after carrying out a comprehensive upgrade.

Speaking on the reopening, the managing director/CEO of LAWMA, Mr. Ibrahim Odumboni, said the temporary closure of the landfill became necessary to prepare it for the anticipated increase in waste disposal activities during the forthcoming Yuletide festivities.

He said: “December will have more influx of trucks due to the volume of waste that would be generated during the period. 70 per cent of waste generated in Lagos is deposited at Olusosun. Turnaround time is very crucial for waste management, the tipping platform has to be very stable, so that waste disposal does not take more than 10 minutes. And the authority is working to ensure that 10 trucks can tip at once.”

Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, The LAWMA boss further stated that the palliative measures would be extended to other dumpsites across the metropolis, starting from Solous dumpsite, Igando, which would also be shut down in a couple of days, for the same maintenance work.

He appealed to Lagos residents to bear with the authority, adding that any inconvenience occasioned by the ongoing maintenance of the landfills was for the purpose of better service delivery.

In another development, Odumboni also yesterday received an award from the National Association of Online Security News Publishers, for his efforts at repositioning LAWMA since he assumed leadership.

It was presented during the National Security Conference/Awards event, tagged: “A Nation Under Siege: Activating Technology and Local Intelligence To Solve Conundrum”, held at the NECA House, Alausa-Secretariat, Ikeja.

FEDERAL GOVERNMENT CHANGES LAGOS-IBADAN EXPRESSWAY PROJECT COMPLETION DATE
source : http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/09/federal-government-changes-lagos-ibadan.html
The Federal Government will no longer meet its December 2018 date for the completion of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway project.
This was disclosed by the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Adedamola Kuti, in an interview.
The Federal Government had earlier promised to deliver the project by the end of 2018.
The Minister of Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, was one of the government officials who had stated the completion date.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Kuti told newsmen that owing to the change in scope of work, the road will now be completed in December 2019.
He said: “The end of 2018 is no longer feasible; what we have is that the government has awarded additional work that is not part of the original contract. When the contract was first awarded, we did not take into consideration the religious organisations that are springing up rapidly in the area.
“So now, we have to make provision for toll gates, flyovers and plazas, among other additions. So, the completion date has been extended. We need additional one year to complete the work that has been added.”
Kuti also adduced reasons for the slow pace of work.
He said: “This is construction work; the pace of work is usually slower during rainy season. Once a material is wet, you must allow it to dry before it can be used.
“Instead of people to complain about the pace of work, they should consider the fact that the contractor is on site and we are moving.”

ABCON KICKS AS BANKS SUSPEND BDCS’ ACCOUNTS OVER TAX REMITTANCE
source : http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/09/abcon-kicks-as-banks-suspend-bdcs.html

The Association of Bureau de Change Operators of Nigeria has kicked against the on-going banks’ suspension of bureau de change (BDC) accounts and demanded for tax remittances on turnover volumes.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, ABCON President, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, said banks are acting under the directive of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) to demand that BDCs pay taxes on funds used to bid for their dollar allocations sent to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) on weekly basis through the commercial banks.
The ABCON boss said many banks had written BDC operators and are implementing a ‘Post No Debit’ order on the operators’ accounts, even where there is no evidence of tax default.
“The BDCs are high turnover sector and their funding cash for dollar collections cannot be subjected to taxes. An average BDC does over N30 million weekly turnover and paying taxes on such funds will affect their cash flow and ability to meet their statutory role of foreign exchange supply to the retail-end of the market,” he said.
He said many of the affected BDC operators are already facing major funding challenges that need to be addressed immediately by concerned stakeholders.
“In fact, we will be writing to the Central Bank of Nigeria –CBN- to complain about the illegal policy of the ‘Post No Debit’. Presently, most of our members funding with the deposit money banks for their bidding obligations are being trapped in the banks. This scenario if not checked, will affect our members funding capacity, derail the sustainability of their businesses with the resultant liquidity spikes,” he said.
A letter from one of the commercial banks, stated: “The bank has pursuant to section 49 of the Companies Income Tax Act LFN 2004 and Section 28, 29 and 31 of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (Establishment) Act No. 13 of 2007 been appointed by the Executive Chairman of the FIRS as collection Agent over your accounts.
“Please, be informed that consequent on this directive, we are compelled by law to place ‘Post No Debit’ on your account pending the receipt of further instructions from the Executive Chairman of FIRS. This is for your information and necessary action as you are best advised to contact the FIRS officials.”
According to Gwadabe, the new trend in collecting taxes from BDCs is unacceptable and must be stopped. He said that ABCON will be writing CBN to call the banks and other parties implementing the directive to order.
“The banks did not asked the BDCs to bring evidence of tax payment before they act. Value Added Tax -VAT- Exempt for BDCs is applicable in other climes and should also be practiced in Nigeria. The non-implementation of tax exempt in Nigeria is affecting the capacity of BDCs to effectively meet the foreign exchange demands at the retail-end of the market,” he said.
He said ABCON will continue to implement zero tolerance for non-compliance with regulatory requirement and unethical conduct amongst its members but will not sit idly and watch the businesses built by its members destroyed by illegal policy like the ‘Post No Debit’ order.
The ABCON, he added, has also created the office of Compliance Officer at its National Secretariat and in all its Zonal Offices to discipline operators that fail to comply with set regulations.
Gwadabe said the BDC sector is critical for continued stability in the foreign exchange market adding that the working of many developed economies is highly dependent on the activities of BDCs and Nigeria should not be an exception.
He said the BDCs have so far stamped their role as key players in the foreign exchange market, where they remain major economic drivers creating employment and wealth for Nigerians.
These contributions, he added, require that the operations of BDCs be supported to sustain ongoing market rally and stability.

EX-GOVERNOR KALU: STOP PLAYING POLITICS WITH RELIGION, TRIBE
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/08/ex-governor-kalu-stop-playing-politics.html

Former Governor of Abia State and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Saturday asked Nigerians to stop play politics with religion.
He warned against the politics of religion and tribe after paying a courtesy visit to Enugu State Governor, Mr. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi at the State House, Enugu yesterday.
During the visit, Kalu commended the governor for showing respect to President Muhammadu Buhari and other leaders in the country irrespective of political affiliations.
According to the reports gathered by Eyes Of Lagos, He explained the reason behind his vision the Enugu Government House despite belonging to different political party with the governor, noting that he was just on a routine visit.
He said: “I pass through here. I also tell the President and Commander-in-Chief that I am going to him. There is no way I can come to Enugu without passing through here, more over he (Ugwuanyi) is a very close friend of mine.
This is like a home to all Igbos. This is the headquarters of Igbo land. I am in very good terms with the governor, not just because he is a governor. You know MV Neya and MV Sophia Maria when he was Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Marine Transport, he commissioned them in Malaysia.
“So, people should stop playing politics of tribe. We go to the same church. He is a catholic. I am a catholic. I wish him well; I hope he is also wishing President Buhari well.”
Kalu expressed delight at the friendship the governor has maintained with political leaders across the board, stressing that such uncommon leadership style has brought peace and development to Enugu State.
He said Ugwuanyi “is a very close friend of mine and we are family irrespective of the fact that they are in different political parties. I am in very good terms with the governor of Enugu State, even before he became a governor.”
Kalu disclosed that Buhari took Ugwuanyi as a family, declaring that there “is no point to quarrel with anybody who is not quarreling with us. I look at Ugwuanyi as a family member.
“So, I do not expect him to be in the same political party with me. He is of PDP. I am of APC. But we maintain the friendship. It is across the board,” Kalu noted.

A former Oyo State Governor Adebayo Alao-Akala has declared his intention to contest the governorship seat in 2019.

Alao-Akala said he was bowing to intense pressure from his admirers.

The former governor spoke yesterday at his Bodija, Ibadan, home while hosting members of the Akala Support Group.

Eyes Of Lagos recalls that the group, at a programme held at Premier Hotel in Ibadan on March 29, urged Alao-Akala to re-contest in 2019.

He said: “Patriotic people of Oyo State, for quite some time now, I have been inundated by telephone calls and text messages from well-meaning citizens and subjected to intense pressure.

“I have been receiving these messages from Destiny Group, corporate bodies, political associates and friends alike to stage a comeback to the governorship seat in the state.

“Having communed with my creator, the Almighty God, my immediate family and due consultations with critical stakeholders, I do solemnly offer myself to contest for the governorship seat in 2019. So help me God.”

Alao-Akala said he was contesting with a view to consolidating on and surpassing the achievements of Governor Abiola Ajimobi.

The former governor claimed that he endeavoured “to put smiles on the faces of people within available resources” when he was governor between 2007 and 2011.

He lauded the efforts of Ajimobi, who has been governing the state in the last seven years.

Alao-Akala said: “Ajimobi’s remarkable programmes and projects in the areas where people find tough to venture into have been impactful on the citizenry such that the people have tagged him Koseleri (Pathfinder) Governor.

“My fellow compatriots, you can see vividly the similarities in our designations, Oyato (Unique) and Koseleri, both of which are clear evidence of purposeful governance.”

The Chairman of Akala Support Group, Dr Fola Akinosun, described the former governor as the most qualified and experienced among those who have declared interest in the governorship race.

FIRS: MULTIPLE TAXATION DOES NOT EXIST IN NIGERIA
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/07/firs-multiple-taxation-does-not-exist.html

The chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Services (FIRS), Babatunde Fowler, says multiple taxation does not exist in Nigeria.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Speaking on Wednesday after a session with the federal executive council, he said the list of defaulters would be released by the middle of July.
The Voluntary Assets Income Declaration Scheme (VAIDS) window closed on June 30 after a three-month extension from its initial March deadline.
“The update is that it expired June 30th. And anyone who has not come forth by now we shall use all the legal means to make sure that we bring them to book and make sure that they pay the appropriate tax with interests and penalties,” he said.
“Well, the response has been very good. We are collating all the figures both at the federal levels and the states levels and I believe that by the middle of July, we should be able to tell the nation the exact progress in terms of the numbers that have declared, amount that has been paid and the amount that is going to be paid in installments”
“Let me say once again that we do not really have a situation of multiple taxation. You only have multiple taxations when you pay the same tax to different tiers of government.
“What we have found out is that a lot of people categorize any payment to the government as a tax. For example, if you receive fine, a penalty they call it a tax. If you pay for the parking space, they call it a tax. Those are the things you refer to as user charges and not taxes.”
In May, the FIRS chairman had assured entrepreneurs that the national tax policy will address the issue of multiple taxation.
“The Joint Tax Board as a body is working together with the FIRS to harmonise tax collection from small businesses all over Nigeria.
“We have the national tax implementation committee working on the National Tax Policy to harmonies the taxes that are being paid in different states.
“It is going to address the issue of multiple taxation.”

LOW FOREX INFLOW WEAKENS NAIRA AT I&E WINDOW
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/07/low-forex-inflow-weakens-naira-at-i.html

The value of the naira at the Nigeria Autonomus Foreign Exchange (NAFEX) market weakened last week compared to what it closed the previous week as inflow from the window dropped to $796.02 million. Eyes Of Lagos reports gathered that, Penultimate week, the NAFEX also termed the Investors’ and Exporters’ Window had seen an inflow $1.292 billion. Although the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) had increased its interventions, a low inflow of dollars on Friday at the I&E window saw the naira selling at N361.32 to the dollar as against N361.07 which it sold to the dollar the previous week. CBN had intervened twice at the foreign exchange market last week boosting inflow from the official and I&E window. In total, both windows saw a combined inflow of $1.324 billion last week compared to $1.2 billion the previous week. The CBN in its two intervention for the week injected $210 million and $318.73 million into the foreign exchange market on Tuesday and Friday respectively. The Monday intervention of $210 million was meant to cater for requests in the wholesale segment of the forex market. The information obtained from the CBN on Friday indicates that the deals in the retail window represent requests from the various sectors in the Secondary Market Intervention Sales (SMIS), thereby providing a boost to the respective sectors. According to the acting director, corporate communications at the CBN, Isaac Okorafor, $318.73million sold was for companies in the raw materials, agricultural, airline and petroleum industries. Okorafor reiterated the CBN’s commitment to ensuring that all the sectors continue to enjoy access to the foreign exchange required for their business concerns. At the bureau de change (BDC) market the currency remained firm by trading at N360/$1, N482/€1, N420/£1 throughout the week which it also maintained last week. Meanwhile, overnight lending rate at the interbank market surged 1,050 bps on average, w/w, to close at 14.08% as outflows of N207.04 billion through Open Market Operations and N31.22 billion through bond auctions as well as forex sales outweighed inflows from matured OMO bills worth N183.27 billion. This week, inflows from maturing OMO bills worth N238.65 billion and the monthly FAAC disbursement are likely to outweigh outflows; thus, higher liquidity. In the treasury bills market, bearish sentiments were sustained, on the back of reduced liquidity. Consequently, average yield rose 10 bps to 13.00%. Investor sentiment was negative across the short (+8 bps), mid (+8 bps), and long (+12 bps) ends of the curve, amid selloffs of the 13DTM (+61 bps), 146DTM (+29 bps), and 188DTM (+36 bps) bills, respectively. Analysts say they expect a reversal of the bearish trend, on the back of anticipated healthy liquidity. At the NTB auction scheduled for Wednesday, the CBN will offer NGN170.50 billion – NGN9.52 billion of the 91-day, NGN33.93 billion of the 182-day, and NGN127.06 billion of the 364-day – worth of bills to the market.

LAGOS COOPERATIVES INVESTMENT HITS N152 BILLION
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/07/lagos-cooperatives-investment-hits-n152.html

Ahead of the 2018 United Nations International Day of Cooperatives, the Lagos State Commissioner for Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives, Mrs. Olayinka Oladunjoye, has disclosed that Cooperatives investment has risen to N152billion.
Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Addressing journalists in Lagos yesterday, she said the importance of Cooperatives to the growth and development of the economy cannot be over emphasized.
She noted that the decision of Governor Akinwunmi Ambode’s decision to realign the Cooperatives Department, hitherto domiciled in the Ministry of Agriculture, was to fully unleash the economic potentials of the Cooperative sub-sector for increased contributions to the state’s economy.
She said: “The general objective of this realignment is to deploy cooperative principles towards the establishment of viable and profitable enterprises.”
She added that concerted effort to turn the Cooperative Movement into an instrument of economic growth and business prosperity is already yielding bountiful harvest, as Cooperative investment in Lagos State economy had risen to N152billion in the last three years.
“Against the backdrop of success and positive yields recorded, there has been an appreciable growth in the number of registered Cooperative Societies in the state.
During the period under review, a further 371 societies were registered, bringing registered societies since the Department of Cooperatives was absorbed into the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives to 1,045.”
Speaking further, she noted that the theme for the 2018 International Day of Cooperatives: “Sustainable Consumption and Production,” is strategic as it aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Number 12.
“Hence with the slogan of the day: ‘Sustainable Societies through cooperation,’ co-operators in Lagos State are very happy to join their counterparts all over the world to showcase how they are helping to transform societies into more sustainable and resilient habitats through the adoption of best practices towards the development of viable, profitable but environmentally-friendly enterprises.”
Conclusively, she noted that the commemoration, which was held in conjunction with Lagos State Cooperative Federation (LASCOFED), had other programmes like: Cooperative Awareness Walk, Quiz Competition, visit to Orphanages, Jumat Service, Novelty football match, among other programmes.

POLICYHOLDERS RECOUP N540BN CLAIMS FROM INSURANCE FIRMS
source: http://www.eyesoflagos.com/2018/07/policyholders-recoup-n540bn-claims-from.html

Insurance policyholders across the country have recouped N540 billion claims from the insurance industry in the last five years after suffering insured risks, Eyes Of Lagos can exclusively reveal. The industry also generated N1.5 trillion premium income in the last five years, A year-on-year (Y-o-Y) analysis of the claims payment trend from 2013 to 2017 shows that there is a consistent progress in claims paid by the industry, even as more policyholders are now aware of how to claim when an insured risk occurs, unlike what it was years back. Within the period under review, findings show that non-Life Insurance companies paid N287 billion claims, while Life Insurers paid N253 billion, thereby bringing the cumulative claims paid by the sector to policyholders to N540 billion. In 2013 financial year, insurance sector paid N92.9 billion claims to claimants, out of which the non-life underwriters paid N38.6 billion, while life insurers paid N34.3 billion. By 2014, policyholders got N35.9 billion claims from life underwriters as well as N51 billion from non-life insurers, bringing the total claims paid for that financial year to N86.9 billion. At the end of 2015 financial year, the industry had paid N105.1 billion claims of which life outfits paid N50.5 billion, with non-life operators paying N54.6 billion compensation to policyholders. A cumulative sum of N119.5 billion was paid as compensation to claimants in 2016, wherein life insurance firms remitted N61.8 billion and non-life outfits paid N57.7 billion claims. While the total claims profile of the insurance industry in 2017 financial year could not be ascertained, with some underwriters yet to get regulatory approval on their accounts, market observers’ project that the industry could have paid N135 billion claims in the last financial year. Investigation by Eyes Of Lagos also showed that the benefiting claimants comprise of public and private companies, government at federal, state and local levels as well as individuals who have paid premium to insure their respective risks before they happened. Although most people have faulted the inability of some underwriting firms to pay claims as and when due, leading to low patronage of the insurance industry, things seem to have changed for better as insurers are now waking up to the reality that they will lose their customers if they refuse to promptly pay genuine claims. With incessant increase in volume of car crash, building collapse, fire incident in factories and market places, among other risks across the country, there has been continuous upsurge in the volume of claims in the last five years. Besides, increase in replacement value of insured assets, which is making underwriting firms to pay more to replace assets when risk occurs, could be partly responsible for the increase in claims value. Meanwhile, the insurance industry generated a whopping N1.5 trillion premium income in the last five years, despite the low insurance adoption and penetration in the country. In 2013, insurance companies made N267.8 billion premium income, generated N293 billion in 2014, made N312.4 billion premium income in 2015 and in 2016, the premium income of the industry was N315.8 billion, while the industry recorded N363 billion premium income in its 2017 financial year end. Managing director of AIICO Insurance Plc, Mr Edwin Igbiti, while speaking on the claims paid by the insurance sector in the last five years, said insurance companies exist to assume the responsibility of the premium they collect, which is the payment of claims. “We realise that we exist, not just to create wealth but to provide protection for our clients in return for premium payments,” he said. On his part, immediate past chairman, Nigerian Insurers Association (NIA), Mr Eddie Efekoha, said insurance operators have improved in the area of prompt payment of genuine claims, noting that the association has persuaded its members on the need to honour claims obligations, which according to him, is the reason why underwriting firms exist. He said the best form of insurance advocacy that operators can do is to pay claims, adding that the beneficiaries will spread the gospel of getting claims in insurance firms, thus persuading more people to pick up insurance policies. Efekoha who is also managing director of Consolidated Hallmark Insurance Plc said insurance operators would continue to live up to their claims responsibilities, noting that insurance should be considered first in decision making, especially now that it is difficult to replace lost items due to high replacement value. Accordingly, he advised his colleagues to publicise the claims they pay, as this will increase insurance awareness and acceptance. Managing director of Alpha Choice Insurance Brokers Limited, Mr Sunny Adeda, had earlier stated at a forum in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, that payment of claims as and when due remains the best way to deepen insurance penetration, even as it will persuade people to have trust in insurance firms. He disclosed that the industry had paid billions of Naira of claims that most people are not aware of, urging operators to henceforth increase publicity on the claims they pay.

No fewer than 2, 000 Nigerian youths are expected to benefit from an entrepreneurial summit being packaged by a Lagos-based Non-Govermental Organisation (NGO), Spark Consults under the Bola Adeboye Foundation (BAF). The summit, which is scheduled to mark the country’s 58th independence anniversary in October 2018, is aimed at liberating Nigerian youths from being dependants to becoming employers of labour. Eyes Of Lagos gathered that, Addressing journalists yesterday in Lagos, the Chief Executive Officer of Spark Consults, Bola Adeboye said the summit was planned towards meeting the needs of the Nigerian undergraduates, those who have graduated from the higher institutions as well as those still undergoing their one year mandatory Nigeria Youths Service Corp (NYSC) programmes.
