Christian Atsu found dead after going missing in Turkey earthquake

Former Chelsea and Newcastle United forward, Christian Atsu has been found dead after he went missing for days after the earthquakes in Turkey.

Makesense Media reports that, The Ghanaian footballer, who played for Hatayspor before his tragic death was one of the star players from the Chelsea academy before heading to Turkey.

The 31-year-old was residing in an apartment in Hatay city which suffered huge damages during the quake.

His club Hatayspor initially reported he was rescued "with injuries" but a day later that position changed.

The news of his death was confirmed by his agent in Turkey, Murat Uzunmehmet.

“Christian Atsu was found and had unfortunately passed away,” he said through a brief statement on social media.

Atsu was staying in a building with a number of Hatayspor team-mates and officials. The club's sporting director Taner Savut is also missing.

Atsu scored late in injury time to give Hatayspor a 1-0 win over Istanblul-based Kasimpaşa S.K. in the Turkish league on Feb. 5, earning him praise from his new club hours before the earthquake struck.

Some survivors are still being rescued after the quakes and aftershocks in southern Turkey and northern Syria that are known to have killed more than 40,000 people.

Atsu who previously played for English clubs Chelsea and Newcastle, signed for Hatayspor late last year. The club is based in Antakya, near the epicenter of the 7.8-magnitude earthquake that struck in the early hours of Feb. 6, one of two major earthquakes, along with ensuing aftershocks that devastated southern Turkey and northern Syria.

Politics / NNPC: Fuel Subsidy Now Above N400bn Monthly by voiceoftheupcom: 10:41pm On Feb 17, 2023
NNPC: Fuel subsidy now above N400bn monthly

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Ltd. (NNPCL) reports that the monthly payment for Premium Motor Spirit (petrol) has surpassed N400 billion.

Mele Kyari, the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPCL, made the announcement on Friday in Abuja during the ongoing Final Cutover to NNPC Ltd. from being a corporation.

Mr Kyari stated that the oil company would continue to meet its obligations by providing PMS for Nigeria, but that the monthly subsidy of over N400 billion had put a significant strain on NNPCL’s cash flow.

According to him, NNPCL is the sole importer of petrol into Nigeria and has been doing so for several years, bearing the enormous cost of fuel subsidy.

Makesense Media facts gathered that, He said other private oil marketers stopped importing petrol into Nigeria due to the difficulty encountered in accessing the United States dollars, required for the imports of PMS.

“Today, by law and the provisions of the Appropriation Act, there is subsidy on the supply of petroleum products, particularly PMS into our country. In current data terms, three days ago the landing cost was around N315/litre.

“Our customers are here, we are transferring to each of them at N113 per litre.

“That means there is a difference of close to N202 for every litre of PMS we import into this country. In computation, N202 multiplied by 66.5 million litres, multiplied by 30 will give you over N400 billion of subsidy every month,” he said.

Mr Kyari said that the continuous funding of petrol subsidy by NNPCL had been ongoing without refunds from the Federal Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning, despite the fact that subsidy had been budgeted for in the Appropriation Act.

“There is a budget provision for it. Our country has decided to do this. So, we are happy to deliver this, but it is also a drain on our cash flow, and I must emphasis this.

“For as we continue to support this, you will agree with me that it will be extremely challenging for us to continue to fund this from the cash flow of the company when you do not get refunds from the Ministry of Finance,” he said.

He expressed assurance that it would continue to support the country and deliver energy security.

UK warns citizens in Nigeria to avoid banks, ATMs, 23 states

The United Kingdom has issued another travel advice to its citizens in Nigeria, the second in four months.

In the information updated on Wednesday, the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office, FCDO, warned against areas where there are banks and ATMs.

It noted that the Central Bank of Nigeria’s redesigning and issue of new N200, N500 and N1000 notes has led to shortages of cash.

Citizens were encouraged to ensure notes provided by currency exchange vendors will be valid for the duration of their travel to Nigeria.

There have been outbreaks of violence in some Southern states as a result of cash shortages, with a risk of other urban areas being impacted across the country.

“We advise travellers in Nigeria to exercise their judgement, including being aware of any large crowds or potential disturbances,” the FCDO said.

The U.K. observed a spike in criminal activity, advising its nationals to take take extra precautions particularly when withdrawing cash in crowded spaces, and during night time hours.

They were also cautioned against travels Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Katsina, Zamfara, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

The FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Bauchi, Kano, Jigawa, Niger, Sokoto, Kogi, Niger, Kebbi, Abia, Plateau and Taraba States.

The UK government also mentioned the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control’s announcement of the online Health Declaration Form for incoming travellers.

The advice said ahead of the general elections movement restrictions may be enforced while there is heightened risk of protests and violence.

2023: North not supporting southern presidency — Northern elders

Northerns Elders Forum (NEF) has said the region has made sacrifices and played a crucial role in the peaceful coexistence of Nigeria.

He said the north is not in support of zoning the presidency to the south.

Speaking at the General assembly of the Northern Elders, the group’s convener, Professor Ango Abdullahi, said the north has paid its dues.

This is just as he said that the north will not accept their victory in the election being denied.

“Obasanjo couldn’t get 10,000 votes in front of his house, I said to the journalists that spoke to him rudely most of the times, I said he will be president in Nigeria by the votes of Northern Nigeria and he did, we got paid back somehow, it wasn’t appreciated as such.

“Who voted Abiola? The North did in my sitting room to defeat Tofa. All these are sacrifices being made by northerners.

“And even you are talking about the years in power since 1999 till date, Obasanjo ruled for 8 years, Jonathan ruled for 6 years which is 14 years, Umaru Ya’ardua did 2 years and Buhari is doing 8 which is 10 years,” he said.

The northern elder said the region is hoping that the election will be conducted free, fair and credible and anybody who wins the election must be accepted as the winner of the election without sentiment, and if there is any attempt to subvert it, then the north will be ready to counter.

Politics / Why We Dropped Late Ikonne’s Running Mate – Abia PDP by voiceoftheupcom: 8:50am On Feb 16, 2023
Why we dropped late Ikonne’s running mate – Abia PDP

The leadership of the Abia chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has explained why it dropped Hon. Okey Igwe, the running mate to the late Prof. Uche Ikonne.

The Publicity Secretary and Vice Chairman Abia North, Hon. Amah Abraham, said Igwe was dropped because he has dual citizenship

Makesense Pm gathered that, During a telephone interview with the News Agency, Amah said PDP took the decision to avoid going into the March 11 contest without any governorship candidate.

He said: “Our former guber candidate is deceased and as a result of that, a section of the Electoral Act was activated. That section of the Electoral Act which was activated requires a primary to be conducted and in conducting fresh primaries means that a new candidate must emerge from the party and that was exactly what has happened.

“A new candidate has emerged and one of the legal privileges of a candidate who emerged as a flagbearer of the party either as a governor or a President is the first privilege that accrues to the person is the right to nominate his or her running mate.

“Nobody or institution compels you to adopt somebody. Of course, a candidate can choose his running mate by consulting with the party, but it is the candidate that will eventually determine his or her running mate.

“So, when Prof. Ikonne died, the joint ticket with his deputy or running mate died as well. Whoever that was his running mate ceases to exist as a running mate because nobody elected the running mate in any party primary. The person who was elected was Prof. Ikonne and that is the person who is vested with the powers to nominate.

“If he who was nominated had died, the nominator would have been empowered to re-nominate another person. That is what happened.

“The truth is that he is a very qualified person. The truth is that we feel so bad that he is no longer the deputy governorship candidate of the party. But you see, his private interest as an individual cannot override the interest of the party.

“One of the reasons the new governorship candidate didn’t consider him (Okey Igwe) is also based on legal issues and one of those legal issues is that as of the time that he (Okey Igwe) was already a running mate, a matter came up in a Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, where a candidate was challenged that in a Federal High Court that he is not eligible on the grounds that he has dual citizenship and the Federal High Court ruled in the matter that anybody who has pledged allegiance to a foreign country cannot be qualified to stand for public office in Nigeria. That person was disqualified.

“Now, the person took the matter to the Court of Appeal and the Court of Appeal quashed the decision of the Federal High Court and the matter is before the Supreme Court.

“He is a dual citizen; he has served in the American Military and the rest of the things that were part of the plus which he had as a person and if for any reason those things which were part of his plus have now developed legal challenges, then we cannot because of his individual interest take a risk that will make our party go into an election without a candidate.

“As a party, we felt that it was not necessary to start talking about the challenges that made the party to drop him but we are now addressing this issue because of the position that he (Okey Igwe) is taking now and that is why it has become important that we explain to the public reasons for our actions.”

Politics / Lagos: Pastor Sentenced To Life Imprisonment For Impregnating Two Sisters by voiceoftheupcom: 10:45am On Feb 15, 2023
Lagos: Pastor sentenced to life imprisonment for impregnating two sisters

A 51-year-old pastor, Nduka Anyanwu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment for defiling and impregnating two teenage sisters.

Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic and Violence Court on Tuesday handed down the sentence after finding Anyanwu guilty of the offence.

Anyanwu was arraigned on April 17, 2022, on two counts of defilement by the Lagos State Government.

The offence was said to have been committed between 2019 and August 2020 at Arowojobe Street, in the Oshodi area of the state.

According to the prosecution, the offence is punishable under Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

The defendant pleaded not guilty when he was arraigned, trial commenced and ended on October 11, 2022.

The prosecution called six witnesses, while the defendant testified as his sole witness.

When the matter came up on Tuesday for judgment, Olushola Shoneye announced his appearance for the state, but the defence was not represented.

During the trial, the first prosecution witness testified that though she is now 15-year-old, she was 13-year-old at the time incident happened.

She testified that the defendant was known to her as the pastor of their church and that he had been having sex with her and warned her not to tell anyone.

The victim stated that the defendant said she would not get pregnant, but she eventually got pregnant and had a child for the defendant.

The second prosecution witness, the older sister to PW1, now 19-year-old, but was 17-year-old, at the time of the incident, collaborated the first witness’ testimony that the defendant was their pastor.

She narrated how the defendant had sexual intercourse with her with the consent of her parents, that he would take her abroad for greener pastures, and she started visiting him.

A guardian and counsellor with Lagos State, Mrs Memunat Dawudu, who collaborated on the evidence of the victims, testified that she got to know about the matter on August 3, 2020, from the Oshodi Primary Health Centre.

The father of the victims, in his testimony, stated that he knew the defendant, as he was a church member, and also his friend that he was responsible for his two daughters’ pregnancies.

He said he was aware that the defendant was having sex with his daughters.

The mother of the victims, in her evidence, stated that she was shocked when she found out that her two daughters were impregnated by the same man.

Makesense PM reports gahtered that, Anyanwu, who testified, in his defence, said it was the father of the victims who gave him the second prosecution witness, as a wife and they were having conjugal relations.

While delivering judgment, the judge held that the prosecution was able to discharge the burden of proof placed on it, on the charge of defilement.

Justice Sholadoye held that the three ingredients of defilement, were that the child was underage, the defendant had sexual intercourse with the victim and the consent of the child was not sought.

She said,” I am convinced of the evidence led that the defendant is guilty as charged for the offence of defilement.

“The police shied away from their responsibility by not charging the father of the victims along with the defendant.

“The parents of these victims are highly irresponsible and reckless in their parenting. The negligence of their children has contributed to them now being grandparents of two additional mouths to feed. They should have been sanctioned and brought to justice.

“The parents of these two victims, who are biological sisters, acted irresponsibly by allowing their so-called pastor friend to deceive them that he will help them take their children abroad when the defendant cannot even help himself.

“Nduka Anyawu, you are hereby sentenced to life imprisonment, in respect of count one and count two.

“The sentence is to run concurrently, his name should be registered in the Lagos State offenders’ register.”

There’s no way Obi will win presidential election – Dele Momodu

A spokesperson of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP Campaign council, PPC, has said it’s practically impossible for the presidential candidate of the Labour Party, LP, Peter Obi, to win the forthcoming presidential election.

Eyes Of Lagos report that, Peter Obi is one of the leading candidates of the presidential election, with Bola Tinubu representing the All Progressives Congress, APC and Atiku Abubakar standing in for the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.

The PDP chieftain was reacting to a poll result released on Friday which rated the LP candidate as having 95 percent chance of winning the election.

Speaking on Arise Television’s The Morning Show on Monday, Dele Momodu said Obi cannot win in the Northern part of the country.

“In the South West, I can tell you that three people are going to share Lagos votes Tinubu, Peter Obi and Atiku. There’s nothing to argue about it this time.

“The three will get their 25 percent then I don’t know who takes the lead and that’s all that we [the PDP] need…so whenever you have two Southern candidates, it’s going to be difficult and you can see that Obi is eating into the Southern votes.

“It would be a fantasy of the highest order for anybody to say Obi will win most parts of the North. It’s impossible. I’m not a gambler.

“I would have put a bet on it but I’m telling you that it’s impossible. You see, polls are today based on the theory of who is likely to vote and of course it depends largely on technology…polls that said Obi will win the North are faulty polls.

“Obi cannot win the election. There’s no question about it.”

Tinubu: ‘Awolowo, Abiola Was Robbed, History Will Not Repeat Itself’ – Fani-Kayode

Former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has predicted the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, will win, claiming that he will not be robbed like MKO Abiola and the late Obafemi Awolowo.

Eyes Of Lagos reports that FFK announced this in a series of tweets, emphasizing that history will not repeat itself.

According to the APC Chieftain, they will stand firm, hold the line, keep the flag flying, and prove that they are men, no matter how thick the conspiracy is.

While urging Tinubu supporters not to lose hope, Fani-Kayode insists that the former governor of Lagos State is the best candidate and that it is now his turn.

Despite the desperation and plans of the party’s adversary, Tinubu will emerge victorious and restore the country’s lost glory, according to the former Minister of Aviation.

He tweeted:

We go into battle with strength and power. No fear. No turning back. No matter how thick the conspiracy against us is, we SHALL stand firm, hold the line, keep the flag flying and prove that we are men.

Jagaban is the BEST candidate. It is indeed HIS turn and OUR time. We stand and fight with our conviction, our commitment, our strength, our passion, our integrity, our purity of heart and our VOTES.

We stand and fight to win and not to lose. 60 years ago Awolowo was robbed and lost it. 30 years ago Abiola was robbed and lost it 30 years later, in two weeks, despite the callousness & desperation & plots & plans of our enemies, history will NOT repeat itself, Tinubu will NOT be robbed & he will NOT lose it. It is indeed our time! He will be victorious & Nigeria will renew & regain her lost glory.

NNPC to INEC: We’ll make sure petrol is available during elections

The Nigerian Nationa Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited has disclosed that it will ensure the availability of petrol during elections.

Recall that a team from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) led by Mahmood Yakubu, INEC chairperson, visited the NNPC towers in Abuja on Tuesday to discuss the availability of petrol during the forthcoming elections.

Yakubu had earlier stated INEC’s logistics arrangements for the elections may be affected by the scarcity of petrol.

Speaking during the meeting, Mele Kyari, NNPC’s group chief executive officer (GCEO), said the company has always, without formal request, supported INEC in making sure that petrol is available for all vehicles involved in the electoral process.

Makesense Promotions gathered that, Kyari said while is the largest downstream company in the country at present, it is possible that there may be some locations where they are not present.

“We’ll work with your logistics team to identify those areas where we may not have presence so that we can bring in other marketing companies into the conversation so that the products are made available to all the 100,000 vehicles that you have indicated,” he said.

“There will be no difficulty doing this. We have presence; we are everywhere. But where we are not, we will provide commercial conversation between the commission and other marketing companies so that when you need this product, you will have it.

“Also, in addition to this, we’re the only company that has floating mega stations in the country. We will also look at this and see how we can make it available for the purpose of the marine operations in the riverine areas of our country.

“I assure you, just as you have indicated, we have taken very extreme measures to see that we can contain the current distribution challenges that we have and we believe that within the next one week, there will be significant relief, if not elimination, of the current situation that we’re facing.

“In respect of that, we’ll make arrangements to make sure their products are made available to your vehicles during the election period or as a build-up to the elections.”

“AS I STATED IN THE LETTER; ‘IF WE FALL PREY AGAIN, WE WILL HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME AND NO ONE CAN SAY HOW MANY MORE KNOCKS NIGERIA CAN TAKE BEFORE IT TIPS OVER. TO BE FOREWARNED IS TO BE FORE-ARMED.’ OF COURSE, I PRAY THAT NIGERIA WILL NEVER TIP OVER. WE MUST CONSTANTLY WORK AT IT AND PRAY.

“MY WORRY IS PREMISED ON A NUMBER OF ISSUES. FIRST, I AM CONCERNED THAT THE CURRENT STATE OF OUR NATION’S ECONOMY HAS WIDENED THE GULF OF INEQUALITY AND LEFT MANY PEOPLE IN DESPAIR. INFLATION IS ON THE RISE; POVERTY AND HARDSHIP HAVE RETURNED TO MANY HOUSEHOLDS. THE LAST DECADE HAS REVERSED MANY OF THE ECONOMIC GAINS THAT WERE MADE IN THE FIRST DECADE OF THE CENTURY. THERE IS A GENERAL SENSE OF HOPELESSNESS ACROSS THE NATION WITH SEEMINGLY UNCONTROLLABLE INSECURITY.

“IN ADDITION TO THE ECONOMIC HARDSHIP IS POLITICAL MISCHIEF. NEVER HAVE WE BEEN SO POLITICALLY DIVIDED ALONG RELIGIOUS, ETHNIC AND OTHER FAULT LINES AND DELIBERATELY SO. APPOINTMENTS IN GOVERNMENT ARE SKEWED AND LOPSIDED ON BASIS OF NEPOTISM AND MEDIOCRITY AND DISREGARD OF MERIT AND COMPETENCE.

“ELECTIONS ARE HERE AND MAY COMPOUND THE PROBLEM. POLITICAL PARTIES AND POLITICIANS HAVE NOW BEEN EMBOLDENED TO DISCARD SOME OF THE THINGS THAT WERE PUT IN PLACE TO GIVE ALL GROUPS A SENSE OF BELONGING. EXCLUSION IS BEING TAKEN AS NORMAL. DISUNITY STARES US IN THE FACE AND MANY OF OUR LEADERS ARE MORE CONCERNED ABOUT THEIR SELFISH INTERESTS THAN THE SURVIVAL AND HEALTH OF OUR NATION.”

Obasanjo also warned that the coming presidential election is not one to be trifled with.

According to him, the concerns raised about the presidential candidates are real and Nigerians would have themselves to blame if they do nothing about the situation.

He said;

“LET ME REITERATE THAT THE CONCERNS BEING RAISED ABOUT THE NATURE OF THE OPTIONS BEFORE US IN THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS FOR INSTANCE ARE REAL AND SHOULD NOT BE TRIFLED WITH,” THE STATEMENT READS.

“NIGERIA BELONGS TO US ALL AND NO PART OF THE COUNTRY SHOULD BE LEFT IN DOUBT ABOUT THEIR PLACE IN THIS UNION ON ANY BASIS WHATSOEVER; ETHNIC, RELIGIOUS, LANGUAGE, REGION, CULTURE OR SOCIAL STANDING.

“THE BEAUTY OF DEMOCRACY IS THAT THE OPTIONS BEFORE US CANNOT BE IMPOSED ON US IF WE ALL DO WHAT WE NEED TO DO TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THOSE WHO HAVE HAD THE AUDACITY TO PRESENT THOSE OPTIONS TO US WITH LITTLE OR NO INTEREST FOR THE 225 MILLION NIGERIANS.

“IF WE CHOOSE TO DO NOTHING, WE WILL ONLY HAVE OURSELVES TO BLAME. IF WE CHOOSE TO DO THE RIGHT THING, WE WILL BY SO DOING RETURN THIS COUNTRY ON THE RIGHT TRACK; ONE WHICH GIVES ALL OUR PEOPLE A SENSE OF BELONGING AND A SENSE OF UNITY OF PURPOSE AND A STAKE IN THE PROJECT NIGERIA; A PROJECT THAT WILL GIVE ALL OF US PEACE, SECURITY, STABILITY, SHARED PROSPERITY, HOPE AND PROGRESS AND A PLACE WITHIN THE COMITY OF NATIONS.”

God hasn't told me anything about 2023 elections - Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adeboye, has disclosed that God has not yet spoken to him regarding the fate of the 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

The respected man of God made this declaration during his ministration at the November edition of the church’s monthly program tagged, “Holy Ghost Service,” held in redemption camp on Friday, November 4, 2022.

This comes barely three months to the commencement of the next year's elections as campaigns by different political parties and candidates are now in full swing.

Addressing his congregation, Adeboye, who lamented the state of the nation, said he doesn't intend to scare anyone, emphasising that God is yet to tell him if the 2023 general elections will hold.

He said, “I have not been told anything about next year’s election by God.”

According to The Punch, the revered cleric added that he’s a pastor and not a prophet amidst the yet-to-come prophecy from God that he prayed for anyone who comes to him asking for prayers, maintaining that it is God who decides what happens after he prays.

“My duty is to pray. I pray for anyone who comes to me for prayers. It is left for God to decide what happens,” said Adeoye.

Sharing sermons on the theme of the event, “Let It Rain”, Adeboye read from 2 Chronicles 7:13-14, charging Christians to always remain prayerful, while urging them to pray to God to heal the land.

The cleric further said that rain is an harbinger of hope, restoration, and divine favour, noting that in the spiritual realm, rain is associated with blessings, God’s pleasure, fruitfulness and divine supply.

Education / WAEC Announces Plan To Release Certificates With Results by voiceoftheupcom: 5:21pm On Oct 19, 2022
WAEC announces plan to release certificates with results

The West Africa Examination Council has announced plans to make its certificates available to candidates of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination once their results are released.

The Head of National Office, Patrick Areghan, made this known on Tuesday at a luncheon organised by the exam body in Lagos.

He also noted that the digital certificate set to be launched on Thursday, October 20, 2022, applies to those who wrote the exams between 1999 till date, adding that the preceding years would be considered much later.

According to him, the new the digital certificate cannot be tampered with or falsified, just as it would send fakers out of the market.

He said, “Whether your certificate was burnt or lost to flood or eaten by termite, you don’t have to go through the stress of recovering it. Just pick your phone and log on to our website and it comes straight from the WAEC database.

“We have solved the problem of theft. We have saved you the headache of carrying the hard copies of your certificate. And the good thing that will come out of this is, by the time we take a final decision and perfect everything, if we release the results today, I can tell you that the certificates are ready. It is just to roll them out. If we announce the release of results today, the certificates will automatically be ready for release. It may just take a year to transit, because the certificates we have now is going to be treated, but immediately they are treated, they will be available in the database. The next one, that will be 2023 or 2024, immediately we release the results the certificate will be ready.”

He, however, listed insecurity as one of the challenges the body was facing in conducting exams across the country.

He said, “Places where you go to by road, you now have to fly because of insecurity. Almost everybody in WAEC now flies. We are the greatest movers of leg and materials. We stay in hotels. And you know for security reasons you can no longer stay in anyhow hotel. You have to stay in a safe area. There are some places you cannot conduct exams without the physical presence of the police and the Nigerian Army.

“When you go to the East due to what I will call ethnic separatism; you go to the north where you have banditry and insurgency; how do you conduct exams in those areas? Thank God some state governments cooperate with us. If not for the military and the brigade command in Yobe and Borno States, we would not have been able to conduct examination. In the East, we thank the DSS. And generally all over the country, we thank the Inspector-General of Police. We take the exam to every nook and cranny of the country. Our exam is not such that you gather people together in one central location. There is no facility like that in Nigeria. Wherever the school is located, you must go there to conduct the examination. That is a great challenge. Even in some places where you don’t have banditry, gunmen or insurgency, the roads are not good. These are the challenges we have in trying to serve the Nigerian child.”

Sheikh Gumi reveals 3 essential questions he asked Peter Obi when they met

On his way to the venue of an event organised for presidential candidates by the Arewa Consultative Forum, Northern Elders Forum and other northern groups on Monday, Obi stopped by at Gumi’s residence for a courtesy call.

His visit sparked outrage on social media as his followers criticised him for visiting a personality they have condemned for speaking on behalf of bandits in the North.

Makesense Promotions gathered that, speaking  about Obi’s visit, Gumi said he asked the presidential candidate some vital questions.

He said, “He (Obi) came on a courtesy call even though I was meeting him for the first time face-to-face, and so I appreciated his visit.

“I asked him very essential questions, but I told him he didn’t have to give me straight answers right away since I knew he was on his way to Arewa House where he would explain it better to the larger society to understand.

“I asked him about his stand on restructuring because Nigeria has been going through a restructuring from 1960 to date and how he could empower an unskilled nation.

“I also asked him how he could pacify agitations from the South East, North Central, South West, and North East. Again, I told him there are foreign interests in this country that are part of the polarisation of our politics. So how is he going to tackle it?

“He also agreed with me that truly there is foreign interest in this country, and then I wished him well”.

Gumi, therefore, advised all the presidential candidates to make their campaigns issue-based and also warned them against utterances that could further polarise the country.

2023 budget: Presidency to spend N1.1bn on welfare packages, sitting allowance

The federal government has earmarked N1.1 billion to the presidency for sitting allowance and welfare packages.

President Muhammadu Buhari, on October 7, presented a record N20.51 trillion 2023 appropriation bill — with a fiscal deficit of N10.78 trillion — to the national assembly.

Themed ‘budget of fiscal sustainability and transition’, it is the eighth and final budget of the current administration.

The budget shows that the presidency will spend N133.7 billion in total.

A further breakdown also shows that the presidency will get N98.52 billion for personnel, while overhead costs and capital projects gulped N17.48 billion and N17.72 billion, respectively.

The state house headquarters as well as state house operations (offices of president and vice-president) were apportioned N19.8 billion.

N3BN FOR PRESIDENT, VICE-PRESIDENT TRIPS

According to the budget proposal, the state house headquarters will spend N232.2 million on travel and transport. While local travel and transport (training) gulped N51.4 million, N87.8 million was apportioned to local travel and transport (others).

On the other hand, N93 billion was earmarked for international travel and transport (others) for the state house headquarters.

For the office of the president, N2.5 billion was allotted to travel and transport, of which N862 million and N1.6 billion were earmarked for local travel and transport (others) and international travel and transport (others), respectively.

Meanwhile, N846.6 million was set aside for local and international trips for the office of the vice-president.

While local travel and transport (others) were allotted N330.3 million, international travel and transport (others) gulped N516.3 billion.

Consequently, for all trips in the 2023 fiscal year, the offices of the president and vice-president are expected to receive N3.3 billion.

The state house headquarters is also expected to get N498.3 million for sitting allowance.

Makense Promotions gathered that, However, the office of the president received zero allocation for the item.

On refreshments and meals, the state house headquarters will spend N135.7 million while the office of the president and office of the vice-president will spend N30.7 million and N20.3 million, respectively –resulting in N51 million proposed spending.

On foodstuff and catering material supplies, N245.14 million would be expended by state house headquarters, N301.13 million by the office of the president and N156.7 million by the office of the vice-president.

EFCC TO GET N43.2 BILLION
