The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), on Wednesday, reiterated its appeal to the Federal Government not to sign the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) to save Nigeria from being a dumping ground for foreign goods.

The President, Mr. Mansur Ahmed, restated the position of the association at the 2019 Edition of the MAN Annual Media Luncheon for Commerce and Industry Correspondents in Lagos.

Ahmed urged the government to withhold its assent to the agreement pending the completion of the ongoing assessment to determine its likely impact on the manufacturing sector and the economy at large.

AfCFTA is a free trade area being outlined in the African Continental Free Trade Agreement by 49 out of the 55 nations in African.

If the agreement is ratified, the free-trade area will be the largest in the world in terms of participating countries since the formation of the World Trade Organisation.

The agreement was brokered by the African Union (AU) and was signed on March 21, 2018 by 44 of its 55 member states in Kigali, Rwanda.

Nigeria is yet to sign the agreement.

Ahmed said: “The position of the association is that government should not sign the framework agreement until wide reaching sensitisation and proper assessment are conducted on its impact on the economy and the manufacturing sector.

“Our advocacy on AfCFTA is yielding desired results and as you are aware, Nigeria is yet to sign the framework agreement.
“MAN is a functional member of this committee that is billed to submit its report to the President in early February.

“In addition, MAN, being a proactive organisation that strongly believes in evidence-based advocacy commissioned a sector-specific study on AfCFTA.

“We have shared the study, full report and fact sheets on the highlights of findings with the Presidential Committee on AfCFTA.

“We are confident that the eventual position of Nigeria on the AfCFTA Framework Agreement would be well articulated in a fresh National Negotiation Mandate that is in the best interest of the manufacturing sector and indeed the Nigerian economy.

“The position would pay utmost attention to emerging issues on AfCFTA and ensure that the industrial aspiration of the country is not compromised on the platter of free trade.”

An Ikeja High Court has told alleged kidnap kingpin Chukwudumeme Onwuamadike a.k.a. Evans that there was no proof that he was tortured by the police.

Giving a ruling admitting Evans’ June 11, 2017 confessional statement into evidence, Justice Hakeem Oshodi, noted that the 1999 Constitution did not require that statements to the police must be in a specific form.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, the judge also said that based on Evans’ evidence videotaped confession played in court on Oct. 26, 2018, there was no proof that Evans was tortured to provide details of his alleged misdeeds as he claimed.

DAILY POST earlier reported that the alleged kidnap kingpin claimed that he was tortured and forced to make all the confessions he earlier made to the police when he was arrested.

The Judge said, “In the video that was played in open court, the first defendant was cautioned and he signed a word of caution, when he was asked his profession he said he was a businessman, he said so with a smile.

Ahead of the upcoming elections, the Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, has warned against any attempt to rig polls in the state.

Wike warned that nobody will be allowed to manipulate elections, irrespective of the deployment of soldiers and security agencies.

Speaking during the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, campaign rally at Okrika Local Government Area of the state, yesterday, Wike said those who attempt to rig elections in the state will be made to face the consequences.

Wike stated that people of the state have resolved to defend their votes across the 4442 polling stations.

He said: “Nobody can subvert the will of Rivers people during the forthcoming general election.
“Anybody who comes to rig in the state will face the consequences. Allow Rivers people to vote persons of their choice. Nobody can steal our votes in Rivers State.

“Ensure you defend your votes. Nobody can hijack materials here in Okrika.”

A Croatian court said on Monday it had dropped perjury charges against Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren, who was accused of giving false testimony in a major football-related corruption trial.

Lovren, 29, was charged in September with committing perjury over his testimony at the 2017 trial of former Dinamo Zagreb boss Zdravko Mamic, who is accused of multi-million-euro graft.

The player had provided details about his 2010 transfer from Dinamo to French side Lyon.

But the Zagreb municipal court “on January 25 rejected the indictment … against Lovren,” a tribunal statement said without elaborating. The ruling can be appealed, it added.
In December the court dropped similar charges against Real Madrid’s Croatian superstar Luka Modric. Mamic, considered the kingpin of the Balkan state’s football scene, was sentenced in June to six-and-a-half years in prison over multi-million-euro corruption. He fled the country and is hiding in neighbouring Bosnia.

Few weeks to the presidential election, President Buhari today had a closed door meeting with controversial Catholic Priest and Director of Adoration Ministry, Enugu, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Fr Mbaka arrived the Presidential Villa in a BMW car maroon colour, and was ushered into President Buhari’s office where the meeting held.
