Nigerian Government Monday advised residents of Abuja and Lagos, the two cities which are hardest hit by coronavirus, to stay at home “until further advice is given”.

Nigeria currently has 36 confirmed cases of the virus but two of those have recovered and have been discharged. Lagos State has 25 cases while Abuja 6. One death has so far been recorded.

The virus has infected over 361, 510 persons worldwide, killing, at least, 16, 146 according to an AFP tally on Monday evening.

“All Abuja and Lagos residents are strongly advised to stay at home, avoid mass congregation of any kind as well as non-essential outings, until further advice is given,” the Presidency said on Twitter.

Italy, which recorded its first coronavirus death in February, now has more fatalities than China with 6,077, as well as having 63,927 declared infections with 7,432 recoveries.

The move to partially lock down two of Nigeria’s most important cities – Lagos is its economic capital and Abuja its administrative and political centre – came after President Muhammadu Buhari was criticised for not providing leadership to the country in time of crisis.

The Presidency asked all citizens to respect the “advisory and…measures put in place to curtail the spread of #COVID19.”

Nigeria also tightened the screw on entry into the country by foreigners, closing its land borders to human traffic for four weeks. One of the persons, who tested positive for the virus, entered the country through one of its land borders.

The country announced last week that all its international airports would not welcome international flights and suspended its visa-on-arrival programme.

That measure itself came after it initially halted flights from 15 countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Spain, South Korea, Iran, Italy and China, Others included Japan, France, Germany, Norway, Netherlands and Switzerland. Austria and Sweden are also on the list.

Inching towards a lockdown?
Lagos State governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has taken steps in the last few days to break the circle of transmission. Such measures included shutting down all schools in the state and limiting the number of people at social and religious gatherings to a maximum of 50.

Dr Biodun Ogungbo, a Neurological Surgeon with a private hospital in Abuja, has warned Nigerians to avoid unsafe plastic surgery to prevent risking their health.

Ogungbo gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Thursday.

“Recently, there has been a rash of complications following plastic surgery in Abuja.

“Many patients going to have liposuction or indeed fat transfers to have a bigger butt have ended up with massive infections and even a stroke in one case,” he said.

Ogungbo said cheap, unsafe operations further erode the confidence in local practice.

“It is very difficult to lose a bad reputation, even if it is unjustified. The bad news travel far and wide and it forces more Nigerians to consider medical tourism.

“Anyway, the disappointment dissipated very fast, as we got to grips with clients who appreciate the worth of providing local solutions right here in the heart of the nation.

“Clients who are prepared to pay a fair price for solutions here in Nigeria. Many know full well that the cost of surgery in Nigeria is a fraction of what it costs going abroad,” Ogungbo said.

He said one of the reasons why surgeries were expensive was the deployment of human and material resources to ensure the success of the operation.

“We need to be able to cover all bases and not cut corners, if we want to achieve a good outcome.

“This is an increasingly recurring decimal where clients want the best but will not pay for it,’’ Ogungbo said.

He, however, said there was need to continue to provide a safe environment for the patient, saying that Nigerians should ensure they go to reputable surgeon who knows what is required.

Officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force in Ebrumede Police Division, Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State on Thursday, January 31 gunned down two suspected armed robbers and recovered two locally made guns.

The Police also recovered a Toyota Corolla car with Registration Number: NEH 236.

It was learnt that the Police traced the suspects to Sakito Hotel in Agbarho in Ughelli North Local Government after a successful operation at PTI Road in Effurun.

The Police later traced and arrested the suspects to the hotel based on information and recovered the arms.

The Police later gunned down the suspects in their attempts to escape from the area.
Contacted, the Delta State Acting Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Andrew Aniamaka in an exclusive chat with DAILY POST confirmed the report.

DSP Aniamaka said, “The Police recovered two locally made guns and a Toyota Corolla car with Reg Number NEH 236 from the suspects.”

He added that,” They were gunned down in their attempts to escape after being arrested by the Police.”

A pipeline in Mexico exploded while people were stealing fuel from it, near where a similar blast this month left 115 dead, an official said.

The new blast struck Monday in the central state of Hidalgo, about 50 kilometres (30 miles) from the site of the explosion 10 days ago.

State governor Omar Fayad said there were no initial reports of anyone being injured in the latest explosion, in the town of San Agustin Tlaxiaca.

Fayad said people had been “milking” the pipeline.

Media broadcast footage of large flames billowing out of a punctured section of the line.

A similar blast on January 18 in the town of Tlahuelilpan happened after thieves punctured a gasoline pipeline and up to 700 people showed up to fill jugs and other containers.

French urban free-climber, Alain Robert was arrested on Tuesday, police said, after he scaled one of Manila’s tallest towers in his latest high-risk ascent.

The 56-year old adventurer dubbed the “French spiderman” climbed the 47-storey GT Tower without safety equipment, leaving watchers on the ground staring in amazement.

“This is my path, this is my way of living. It is as important to me as eating, sleeping. I need that. It keeps me alive,” he told reporters after completing the climb.

Police were less enthusiastic about the stunt and took him into custody as soon as he reached the ground after the roughly two-hour climb up and down the building.

He was being held on a charge of public disturbance and was awaiting a decision from prosecutors on bail.

Robert has scaled more than 100 structures without ropes or other safety equipment, setting a record for “most buildings climbed unassisted” according to Guinness World Records.

His successes include many of the world’s tallest skyscrapers and iconic buildings, such as the Eiffel Tower, the Sydney Opera House, the Petronas Twin Towers in Kuala Lumpur and the Burj Khalifa in Dubai — where he used suction devices and a safety rope as it has no hand or footholds.

However, in June he was foiled when he attempted to ascend a Seoul skyscraper, getting more than halfway up the 123-storey Lotte World Tower before security forced him to abort.

Robert has suffered several severe falls while climbing and estimates his accidents have left him 66 percent disabled. He has been arrested numerous times for his exploits.

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, on Monday, warned the ruling All Progressives Congress against plunging Nigeria into a constitutional crisis and in the process derailing the country’s democracy.

According to the former Vice-President, the suspension of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Walter Onnoghen, is “an attack on the judiciary”.

Addressing a press conference in Abuja, Atiku accused the Muhammadu Buhari government of “executive lawlessness”.

He said, “I must warn the APC government to desist from taking actions that may push us further down the slippery slope towards a major constitutional crisis that could derail the electoral process.

“General Muhammadu Buhari must remember that he is a beneficiary of a free and fair election. It is therefore a matter of honour for him to allow a political environment and process that gives everyone confidence.
“I commend all Nigerians and friends of Nigeria who have expressed outrage at the unlawful removal of Onnoghen, an action which constitutes a flagrant breach of our constitution and a frontal assault on our democracy. I want to note the universal condemnation of this unlawful act by all Nigerians, as well as the international community.”

He added, “I need to state that this latest action by General Muhammadu Buhari falls squarely within the pattern of executive lawlessness that has now been firmly turned into statecraft by the APC government.

“The serial disregard of court orders, and consequent violation of constitutionally guaranteed human rights of our citizens confirms beyond all doubt that General Buhari and his government would rather obey their own whims and operate by separate rules outside the well-established constitutional order and the rule of law. It scarcely requires emphasis that this behaviour is alien to democratic rules and more in line with that of a military dictator.”
Atiku said the nation’s judiciary must not only be above suspicion but must also be seen to be manifestly above board.

He said the issue at stake was not whether Onnoghen was guilty or not, but whether his suspension was constitutional.

He said, “To create a condition that allows the constitution and the rule of law to become secondary to any other agenda is to pave the way for tyranny. History is replete with odious dictators whose path to dictatorship started with statements of good intentions.

“We must, therefore, remain vigilant in defence of our democracy.”

The ex-VP added, “With this attack on the judiciary, General Buhari has set a new precedent in our democracy that has no equivalence in our history, not even in the darkest days of military dictatorship. This cannot be allowed to stand.”

But the Forum of Presidential Candidates and Political Parties for Good Governance said the Onnoghen’s suspension was in order.

The chairman of the forum, Alhaji Shitu Kabir, said at a press conference in Abuja the CJN’s alleged offence didn’t require the intervention of the National Judicial Council.

The Nigerian Airforce (NAF) has deployed air women and female air officers for military operations in the North-East.

Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshall Sadique Abubakar explained that are actively involved in the on-going counter-insurgency operation with special forces against Boko Haram terrorists and other criminal elements.

Abubakar told PRNigeria on Sunday that NAF is a gender-sensitive service that encouraged its personnel to explore their potentials without inhibition in the armed forces.

The Air Force Chief said: “We call them Women of War as they are well trained to engage in combat and combat support operations for peace, security and national development.

“The female personnel like their male counterparts, help in neutralizing insurgents during airstrike missions, while also providing tactical supports for the ground troops.

“Some of our air women and female officers are regular combatants who have completed specialised trainings at home and abroad. Some of them regularly fly Beechcraft, a special fighter plane used for gathering intelligence, carrying out surveillance and reconnaissance.

“In the last few months, they courageously flew our aircraft across North-Eastern states, especially in Borno and the fringe of Lake Chad to detect and strike at insurgents’ locations. They fly sometimes between four to six hours on the ISR platform.

“The Women of War have continued to showcase their professional capacity as fearless and courageous military personnel as pilots, loadmasters, aircraft maintenance engineers, aerospace engineers, armament specialists, squad leaders, combatants, loadmasters, Military police, and air traffic controllers among others.”
