Politics / Danger: Banks Threaten To Close Shop In Imo by WBrentalz(f): 11:44pm On Oct 29, 2013
Banks operating in Imo state may shut down their operations in the state if the current cold war between them and the state government is not nipped in the bud.
The Nigerian Horn gathered that the on-going face off, which has remained out of public knowledge for some time, has to do with an allegation by the state government that the banks are not paying withholding taxes, a charge which the banks are vehemently protested against. The issue principally is that the banks are protesting over various amounts of money imposed on them by the State Board of Internal Revenue (BIR), as representing the taxes owed by the banks. The amount, according to highly reliable sources, ranges from N650million to N250million, which the banks argue are not only arbitrary but designed by some unscrupulous elements in the system to defraud them. The banks argued further that the move was a misrepresentation of facts as none of them is in default on the payment of any form of taxes to the state government.
Consequently, the banks invited the state government to come for a scrutiny of their books in order to resolve the matter once and for all. But to their greatest surprise, the state government, rather than respond to this invitation, went ahead to secretly obtain an exparte court motion to restrain the banks, that is to prevent them from operating; a move that banks believe is aimed at intimidating them into submission. On getting wind of the secret court order, however, the various managements of the banks decided to seek an audience with the management of the BIR and it was agreed at the meeting that the banks should be given time to properly brief their different head offices on the development.
But on the date agreed for another meeting after consultations with their headquarters, officials of the BIR, it was gathered, stayed away from the scheduled meeting. When contacted, the BiR officials were said to have told the banks that the matter had been taken over by the Government House. The banks were therefore compelled to write letters to the office of the state Governor and the leader of the State House of Assembly but the latter is yet to respond as at the time of this report, leading to fears that the state government may still be hell bent on executing the secret court order.
To forestall being taken unawares, the banks, according to a senior management staff of a first generation bank in the state but who spoke on conditions of anonymity, disclosed that the banks are planning to close shops on their own any time from now, pending the time the matter is resolved. When this newspaper made contacts with the BIR an official, who pleaded anonymity, disclosed that the agency has been asked to stay clear of the matter.
Speaking to Nigerian Horn yesterday on the issue, the Chief of Staff Government House and Commissioner for Special Duties, Sir Jude Ejiogu said the banks should tell Imo people the real truth.
According to Ejiogu, some banks refused to pay their statutory taxes to the Imo State government for reasons best known to them.
He added that though the former administration in the state did not pay attention to IGR, maintaining that it is not enough reasons for the banks to refuse to comply with simple directives of government

Politics / IMO STATE Prepare As Ikunna Foundation Builds 3 Factories In Imo by WBrentalz(f): 10:58pm On Oct 29, 2013
The president and founder of Ikunna Foundation, Mr. Joseph Chukwuma Ikunna said his foundation has completed plans to open three multi-millionaire factories in Imo State.

Disclosing this to some selected media executives yesterday in Owerri, Ikunna also revealed that his foundation since its inception in 2009, has impacted positively in the lives of Nigerians.
He added that over N100m have been invested in the foundation, stressing that about one thousand people have benefited so far.
Ikunna explained that 100 university people received educational grants from the foundation while 300 women were empowered with soft loans of N20,000 each.
The business magnet who hails from Mgbidi in Oru West LGA, said the foundation will continue to give back to the society.
He said his interest in coming back to invest in Imo State was because of the fact that Igbo people consume over 58% drinks that are consumed in Nigeria.
He disclosed that the foundation's football competition kicks off in November 2013, adding that the youths were also being trained in computer applications.

Politics / PDP Accuses Okorocha Of Extorting N.5m From Traditional Rulers by WBrentalz(f): 10:47pm On Oct 29, 2013
Imo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has accused Imo State Government of extorting the whooping sum of five hundred thousand naira (N500,0000.00) from newly elected traditional rulers waiting to be given staff of office.
In a statement in Owerri signed by the state publicity secretary of the party Chief Blyden Amajirionwu, PDP said that this extortionist tendency of the Okorocha administration is becoming embarrassing to the generality of Imo public.
The party further said that they are aware of plans by the Governor to abort the planned conferment of chieftaincy title on one of its members Chief Jerry Chukwueke by traditional rulers of the state.
Aware of the likely consequences of such distractions, PDP said, “The State PDP will therefore hold the Rochas Okorocha’s administration responsible for any breakdown of law and order and also any reaction that will follow this repressive move by his administration”.
According to the statement, Governor Okorocha is said to have perfected plans to suspend thirty six traditional rulers should they go ahead to crown Chief Chukwueke with the title.
PDP therefore maintained, “We encourage our revered Royal fathers from Owerri Federal Constituency never to be intimidated by this over- bearing attitude of the Rochas administration”.
“As men of honour and high integrity, you should be bold to do what you are committed to do which in the eyes of everyone is right. Ndi Imo will like to witness 36 of you dethroned because you discharged a just traditional obligation. That will indeed be a standing history in our Land!”

Politics / PDP Fires Back At Rochas, APC Blasts Imo Governor For Dragging President Jonatha by WBrentalz(f): 10:40pm On Oct 29, 2013
Few days to the Supreme Court decision on the interest of PDP candidate and ex-Governor Ikedi Ohakim joining the ongoing case instituted by the ACN candidate, Sen Ifeanyi Ararume, over the conduct of 2011 Supplementary election, PDP has come hard on Okorocha.
It would be recalled that the camp of Owelle Okorocha have been using various forms to draw attention to the Supreme Court case scheduled for Thursday, October 31, 2013. Apart from employing media campaigns, women and youths were recently mobilized to embark on pro-Okorocha demonstrations on Owerri streets, the Imo State Capital.
Alarmed by verbal comments oozing from the APC and Okorocha’s political family concerning the Thursday case, the national body of the PDP has blasted the incumbent governor of Imo state “for attempting to hoodwink the Supreme Court and divert its attention from the substance of the case of October 31, 2013 ruling on his unlawful emergence as Governor of Imo State”.
In a statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Olisa Metuh, PDP berated Okorocha for accusing President Goodluck Jonathan of influencing the Supreme Court on the case, saying such is part of the embattled governor’s strategy to whip up sentiments to sway the Judiciary by portraying himself as being under attack by the presidency.
The PDP statement stated that Governor Okorocha “has always been jittery” that justice will prevail against him at the Supreme Court for stealing the peoples’ mandate in 2011, hence his recent deployment of blackmail and attacks on the Judiciary and the Presidency ahead of the apex court’s ruling on the case. “The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and indeed all Nigerians have noted the on-going antics of Governor Rochas Okorocha and the All Progressives Congress (APC) wherein they have been issuing threats, sponsoring fabricated stories in the media and organizing phantom protests against the office and person of President Goodluck Jonathan and the Supreme Court.
“This governor has been living in morbid fear of having justice prevailing against him at the Supreme Court for stealing the mandate of the people in 2011. As such, he now seeks to use the instrumentality of blackmail and political subterfuge to divert the attention of the Supreme Court from the substance of the case against him ahead of the apex court’s ruling on October 31, 2013.
“By sponsoring fabricated reports in the media alleging that the Presidency was influencing the Supreme Court to remove him from office, Governor Okorocha is merely trying to whip up sentiments to ultimately sway the Supreme Court by portray himself as a victim of attack by the Presidency. It is to say the least, despicable that a state governor who swore to defend the constitution, will in a desperate bid to retain a stolen mandate, condescend so low to attempt to hoodwink and undermine the sacred institution of the Judiciary, even the Supreme Court.
“Whilst the PDP remains steadfast in its belief in the impartiality of the Judiciary, we call on this institution to note the activities of such undemocratic elements who seek to use every means to undermine and derail it. Moreover, the APC is aware that it will lose the 2015 general elections and even the governorship of states presently under its control. As such, it is now using the Imo state governor’s attempt to blackmail the Judiciary a test for a bigger plot to weaken this institution ahead of 2015 to enable the opposition get away in states they plan to rig. In addition, we call on Nigerians to note the organization of phantom protests against President Goodluck Jonathan by Governor Okorocha and the APC. This is also part of the orchestrated plot by the opposition to undermine the Federal Government and ultimately destroy the unity of the country by engineering pockets of revolts across the country against the PDP-led government.
“Having discovered that Nigerians have rejected them ahead of 2015 general elections due to their penchant for propaganda, deceit and promotion of violence and disunity among the people, the APC leaders have perfected this plot and are now using Imo state and the governor to experiment its workability. We in the PDP at all levels will continue to conduct ourselves with maximum decorum. We believe that the Supreme Court is made up of sagacious and impeccable judicial officers who cannot be swayed by the antics of Governor Rochas Okorocha and the APC,” the statement said.
