Steve Job's long battle with Pancreatic Cancer
In his final days he was a frail shadow of his former self, his body ravaged by the cancer which was to eventually cost him his life.

But the steely courage of Steve Jobs never wavered. He made no public statement about his devastating illness yet his determination to stay at work as long as he could and stay alive for his family needed no explanation. In the end he died peacefully surrounded by the people he loved. He leaves a wife Laurene with whom he has three children Reed Paul, Erin Sienna and Eve.

LONG BATTLE WITH CANCER
August 2004: Apple CEO Steve Jobs discloses that he had been diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer called an islet cell neuroendocrine tumor. He says he has been cured through surgery.

Oct. 14, 2004: In his first public appearance since undergoing surgery, Jobs, then 49, attends a news conference to unveil a new Apple store at a shopping mall near Palo Alto, California.

June 12, 2005: Jobs tells Stanford University graduates that his bout with cancer underscored the need to live each day to the fullest.

July 21, 2008: Speculation mounts that Jobs is ill, given recent weight loss. During Apple's earnings conference call, Apple Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer says Jobs has no plans to leave the company and his 'health is a private matter.'

Billy Bob Thornton's daughter is sentenced to 20 years in Prison
Billy Bob Thornton’s estranged daughter Amanda Brumfield was sentenced to 20 years in prison Thursday after she was found guilty of aggravated manslaughter of a child in May.

Brumfield, 32, was found guilty in connection with the 2008 death of her best friend’s daughter, 1-year-old Olivia Madison Garcia, who she claimed hit her head after falling while trying to climb out of a playpen. During the trial prosecutors argued that it was “impossible” that the three-and-a-half inch fracture on Garcia’s skull was caused by a fall from that height.

She had been found not guilty on first degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges in Olivia’s death. Billy Bob was married to Angelina Jolie for three years and has four children by three different women, but none by Jolie.

Bloody Shirt Found Inside Michael Jackson's Bedroom
As the prosecution continues to present its case in the trial of Dr. Conrad Murray, exclusive photos were taken from Michael Jackson’s bedroom where he died on June 25, 2009.

The chilling photos paint an appalling portrait of the disarray the house was in on the King of Pop’s last day. One shocking photo shows a bloody shirt hanging in Michael's closet. Surprisingly, the shirt has a price tag still attached to it, suggesting that the shirt was never worn, and perhaps was used to wipe up blood. If that is the case, the big question is -- why didn’t investigators remove it from the scene as evidence into the probe into the pop icon's death?

In the same closet where the bloodied shirt was found, Dr. Murray had allegedly stored large amounts of the powerful anesthetic Propofol along with I.V. equipment. Other photos show the bed where Dr. Murray tried to revive Jackson, which prosecutors claim he did with only one hand on the soft bed instead of on the floor in what would have been a better location. In the bedroom, where Michael spent his last hours alive, chairs were gathered on one side of the room. They were likely pushed out of the way during the desperate attempt to save his life.

Dr. Murray, Jackson’s live-in physician at the time of his death, is charged with involuntary manslaughter in the King of Pop’s death for allegedly giving him a deadly dose of the powerful anesthetic Propofol. If convicted, Murray faces up to four years in jail.

Health / 5yr Old Boy Endures Horn Implants So Surgeons Can Remove Birthmark by webprince(m): 12:00pm On Oct 06, 2011
5yr old boy endures horn implants so surgeons can remove birthmark
Doctors have treated a young boy with a large birthmark on his face,  by implanting horns in his forehead.

George Ashman, 5, was born with a bright red blemish on his forehead and his mother Karen, 33, feared he would endure a lifetime of bullying. So when he was four he underwent a surgical procedure to stretch the 'normal' skin on his forehead so the birthmark could be removed and covered with the new unblemished tissue.

Doctors inserted two tissue expanders under the skin, which gradually inflated so they looked like two perfect devil's horns. After four months the implants were removed and the blemish was cut out, allowing the new skin to be stitched together - leaving just a small Harry Potter-style scar on George's forehead.

George went under the knife in April this year to remove the birthmark and have his 'new' skin stretched across in its place. He has only a small scar where the blemish used to be and has now started school with his friends. Karen said: 'What I'm most proud of is that through all this I've seen strength in George that I never had as a child. He's different, but he's himself - and he has never let it hold him back. 'My little devil's got guts - and with or without his birthmark and his horns I'll always love him to bits for that.'

Amid the Ongoing Trial, Michael Jackson Estate gives Katherine $6 Million To Pay Off South Korean Concert Suit
Michael Jackson Estate just loaned Katherine Jackson, MJ’s mother a whopping $6 million to pay off her settlement with a South Korean newspaper.

According to an order entered by the court, the Estate is giving Katherine the $6 million to help her wrap up a 17-year old lawsuit filed against her by the Segye Times. The paper originally won a $4 million judgment against Katherine and others for failing to deliver on a promised Jackson family concert -- but with interest she would owe more than $14 million.

Katherine's attorneys and the paper agreed on a settlement of $6 million -- which clearly she couldn't pay without help from the Estate. There are strings attached -- according to court docs, Katherine must repay the full amount to the Estate, plus interest, within one year.

But check this out -- she got a hell of a deal -- the interest rate is only 16%!

Andy Murray joins Rafael Nadal in Japan Open quarter-finals
Britain's Andy Murray has moved into the quarter-finals of the Japan Open with a 6-1 6-2 victory over Alex Bogomolov Jr of the United States.

The world number four, who won the Thailand Open on Sunday, sent down 11 aces and broke Bogomolov five times as he wrapped up victory in 58 minutes. He did not face a break point and won 95% of points on his first serve. Defending champion Rafael Nadal beat Milos Raonic 7-5 6-3 and now faces unseeded Colombian Santiago Giraldo. Raonic double-faulted at 30-30 when serving at 5-6 and then hit a forehand long to hand Spaniard Nadal the first set.

Nadal then broke his Canadian opponent to lead 4-2 in the second set before winning two service games to seal the win. Fellow Spaniard David Ferrer beat Australian qualifier Matthew Ebden 4-6 6-2 6-2 to also reach the last eight. Ferrer will play the Czech Republic's Radek Stepanek, who saw off Marco Chiudinelli 7-5 6-7 (5-7) 6-1. Murray will play the winner of the Thursday's match between Croatia's Ivan Dodig and Argentina's David Nalbandian.

The fourth quarter-final will pit fourth seed Mardy Fish, a 6-2 6-4 winner over Latvia's Ernests Gulbis, against Austria's Bernard Tomic who defeated Japan's Tatsuma Ito 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 7-5.

Johnny Depp Apologizes For Rape Comment In Vanity Fair

Vanity Fair on Tuesday released a small excerpt of their upcoming Johnny Depp cover article, hoping to generate buzz for their new issue ahead of its hitting newsstands. Mission accomplished.

In the short passage, the Oscar nominee and $100 million a year actor made a rare misstep, comparing participating in photo shoots to being raped. "Well, you just feel like you're being raped somehow," he said. "Raped , It feels like a kind of weird -- just weird, man." The statement raised eyebrows and drew criticism, leading Depp to quickly issue a statement of apology and regret.

'The Simpsons' reportedly getting the axe! Fox says it can't afford to produce hit show without huge pay cuts for cast
The future of animated TV comedy 'The Simpsons' was up in the air on Tuesday after 20th Century Fox Television said it could no longer afford to produce the show without a huge pay cut for its cast.

Fox Television, a unit of News Corp, issued a tough statement after a report that it had threatened to end the subversive series unless the voice actors take a 45 per cent pay cut. 'We believe this brilliant series can and should continue, but we cannot produce future seasons under its current financial model,' Fox said.

Nairaland / General / Boy Born With Eight Arms And Legs Shows Off New Body After Pioneering Surgery by webprince(m): 8:32am On Oct 05, 2011
Beaming with delight little Deepak Paswaan shows off his normal body for the first time since undergoing surgery to remove the legs and arms of his underdeveloped twin growing out of his chest.

For years, Deepak, 7, from Bihar, India, had to suffer taunts and bullying from other children over the appalling disfigurement. Some taunted him as a 'devil' and a 'freak' while others even viewed him as a god. Hindu pilgrims used to visit his home to worship him as an incarnation of the god Vishnu, who is often depicted with more than four limbs.

Last year his family seek for help to get the unwanted limbs removed and give Deepak the chance of a normal life. And Deepak's world was turned upside down when leading surgeons from Bangalore's Fortis Hospital agreed to operate for free. The pioneering surgery, which was carried out last year, would normally cost around £50,000, a sum his impoverished family could never have dreamed of affording. Happily the gruelling four-hour operation was a complete success.

Celebrities / Kim Kardarshian Picks Up Her New Ride: A $274,000 Ferrari! Mrs Car-dashian! by webprince(m): 6:18pm On Oct 04, 2011
She is often seen driving top of the range automobiles and has been behind the wheel of everything from a Range Rover to a Bentley.

But yesterday Kim Kardashian picked up yet another luxury car, this time a Ferrari 458 Italia. Kim, 30, picked up her new ride in a blue-grey knitted dress which hugged her famous curves and nipped in her waist thanks to a black belt. The reality TV star added extra glamour with peep-toe heels and bright red lips as she arrived to pick up her latest toy. The model, which Kim had chosen to purchase in white, retails from $273,9170 (£178,000) but it is likely Kim’s with added extras cost well over $300,000.

And the reality star certainly seemed pleased with her new car as she sped away from the Platinum Motorsport site in Los Angeles. Kim has just returned from a trip to the Big Apple where she has been filming the second series of reality show Kourtney and Kim Take New York.

She tweeted: ‘There truly no place like home!’ It appears that Kim’s is without her husband Kris Humphries and she enjoyed a dinner with her family at Nobu last night. She posted: ‘Nobu with no boo, just the fam tonight!’
Health / Nigeria Records First Stem Cell Transplantation by webprince(m): 11:41am On Oct 04, 2011
A team of the University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Edo State, medical experts have recorded the first successful stem cell transplantation operation in the West African sub-region.

The team led by a haematologist, Dr. Nosakhare Bazuaye, performed a successful surgery made on an indigent sickle cell patient, who suffered a stroke at seven. Chief Medical Director of UBTH, Prof. Michael Ibadin, said the cell transplant began three years ago, when the institution assembled a team of 18 experts, which it sent to Switzerland in an effort to bring comfort to Nigerians suffering from sickle cell anaemia and other diseases.

According to Ibadin, with the breakthrough, the two-week procedure which would have cost about N40m outside the country can now be done for as low as N2m locally. He said, “This is the first time it is happening here, and this is the first time it is happening in Africa, outside Egypt and South Africa. “It did not start now but three years ago when we sent 18 experts to Switzerland in batches and in the course of doing that, experts from Switzerland came here to put up the infrastructure.”

Surrounded by some of the experts, including Bazuaye, who carried out the procedure on the seven-year-old son of a retiree, the CMD explained what the procedure entailed. He said, “Stem cell means primitive cell; the transplantation means you are taking from one person and transplanting to the other. For you to get the stem cell, you have to go to the bone marrow, but then it is not every cell there that is primitive. The process requires extensive technical knowledge and it’s a delicate procedure.

“To do this, you have to break down the defences of the donor through drugs. You need to get this (primitive cell) from somebody to transfer to others. “The likely beneficiaries include sicklers, one of which we just did the stem cell transplantation on. A procedure like this can make a sickler go from SS to AA. You harvest from one source (donor) who is compatible with the patient and transplant. Cancer patients can also benefit.”

He added, “In this particular case, a child at seven, he had already had a stroke and was at the risk of having a second. The person that donated to him was the brother, who is 14. There was cross-matching which had to be done, but was not available in this country. We had to bring in somebody from Basel (Switzerland).”

The surgery, which lasted two weeks, will take another month to determine whether the grafting will jell, but an upbeat Ibadin sees nothing that could undermine the process. He, however, called on Nigerians to rally round the institution, in its effort to make the specialised surgery widely available at a reduced cost.

He said, “It is an expensive procedure but we are not looking at that as we want a breakthrough.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Arsenal Lining Up Bid For Rennes Midfielder Yann M'vila In January by webprince(m): 11:39am On Oct 04, 2011
Arsenal will make another move for Rennes midfielder Yann M’Vila in the January transfer window after failing with its bid to capture him in August.

Arsene Wenger has identified the France international as his key target and has accelerated plans to bring the midfield anchorman to the Emirates Stadium after receiving the news last week that Jack Wilshere will be on the sidelines for five months. Arsenal are prepared to shatter their transfer record to land M’Vila by bidding in excess of 29 million euros for the 21-year-old. The Gunners were named by Rennes coach Frederic Antonetti as one of four Champions League clubs to make offers of “around 30 million euros” for the player in August.

Arsenal’s scouting team have continued to keep close tabs on the player, who has started all nine of Rennes’ Ligue 1 matches this season and is set to add to his 13 international caps when France takes on Albania on Friday and Bosnia-Herzegovina four days later in Euro 2012 qualifiers. M’Vila is contracted to Rennes until 2015 but Arsenal believes there is a strong will on the player’s behalf to follow what is a well-trodden path from Ligue 1 to north London. The French club was unwilling to sell the midfield enforcer in the final days of the August window because it had no time to find an adequate replacement.

Wenger will rotate Mikel Arteta, Alex Song and Aaron Ramsey with rookies Emmanuel Frimpong and Francis Coquelin in the three central midfield berths between now and January. But Wenger is privately concerned about how much of an impact Wilshere will have this season as the manager attempts to end the club’s six-year trophy drought.

Even if Wilshere’s recovery from ankle surgery last week goes smoothly and it corresponds to the 22-week schedule mapped out by the club’s medical department, by the time the teenager returns to the team in late February or early March, he will have been out for seven months in total.

Family / Great Sacrifice Of A Mother by webprince(m): 4:46pm On Sep 28, 2011
I saw this post on Facebook and was moved to tears and admiration/commendation for Great Mothers out there.

This is a true story of Mother’s Sacrifice during the Japan Earthquake.
After the Earthquake had subsided, when the rescuers reached the ruins of a young woman’s house, they saw her dead body through the cracks. But her pose was somehow strange that she knelt on her knees like a person was worshiping; her body was leaning forward, and her two hands were supporting by an object. The collapsed house had crashed her back and her head.

With so many difficulties, the leader of the rescuer team put his hand through a narrow gap on the wall to reach the woman’s body. He was hoping that this woman could be still alive. However, the cold and stiff body told him that she had passed away for sure. He and the rest of the team left this house and were going to search the next collapsed building. For some reasons, the team leader was driven by a compelling force to go back to the ruin house of the dead woman. Again, he knelt down and used his had through the narrow cracks to search the little space under the dead body. Suddenly, he screamed with excitement,” A child! There is a child!

“The whole team worked together; carefully they removed the piles of ruined objects around the dead woman. There was a 3 months old little boy wrapped in a flowery blanket under his mother’s dead body. Obviously, the woman had made an ultimate sacrifice for saving her son. When her house was falling, she used her body to make a cover to protect her son. The little boy was still sleeping peacefully when the team leader picked him up. The medical doctor came quickly to exam the little boy. After he opened the blanket, he saw a cell phone inside the blanket. There was a text message on the screen. It said,”If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.”

This cell phone was passing around from one hand to another. Every body that read the message wept. ” If you can survive, you must remember that I love you.” Such is the mother’s love for her child!!

Don't forget to also share this with others in appreciation of mothers.
