The Senate on Wednesday warned the South African government to halt the frequent killings of Nigerians by its citizens to avoid grave consequences.



President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, who stated this at plenary, warned that the South African government must extend due respect to Nigeria and should not take the good gesture towards it for granted.



The senate also summoned the Nigerian ambassador to South Africa to explain the circumstances that led to the murder of the Deputy Director-General of Chartered Insurance Institute of Nigeria, Elizabeth Ndubusi-Chukwu, in the country recently.



The killing of Ndubusi-Chukwu in June made the number of Nigerians murded in South Africa in three and half years to rise to 127. Debating the death of the CIIN deputy director, the Senate asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to issue travel alerts to Nigerians going to South Africa.



The red chamber also asked the ministry to carry out a comprehensive investigation into the death of the woman. The Senate took the decision following a point of order raised by the Senate Minority Leader, Enyinnaya Abaribe who drew the attention of his colleagues to the gruesome murder of Ndubusi-Chukwu.



He said, “Elizabeth Ndubusi-Chukwu, a mother, and an indigene of Anambra State, was found dead in one of the rooms at the Emperors Palace Hotel and Convention Centre, on June 13, 2019, where she lodged.

“She went to South Africa to attend the Conference of the African Insurance Organisation (A10) and initially was suspected to have died of cardiac arrest.

The Insinuation was proved wrong, following autopsy report released on June 20, 2019, by South Africa’s Department of Home Affairs, which indicated in a Death Certificate that the death was unnatural and suspected to be murder due to strangulation.

“The suspicion that she could have been murdered was further confirmed in a separate document issued by South Africa’s Department of Health on June 27, 2019, where it corroborated the autopsy report and revealed that she was strangled.”

He expressed concern that in curious twist, it was alledged that Emperor Palace Hotel and Convention Centre where she lodged, was reluctant to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies to unravel the circumstances surrounding her suspicious death. Abaribe also noted that it was not the first time Nigerians have died in suspicious and curious circumstances in South Africa.

Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has lamented that the last administration messed everything up in the state.



He decried the rot in all sectors of the state, saying the decadence will take years to fix. The governor however assured his administration will expend N11.2 billion in revamping the infrastructure in the state’s schools. The governor added that the aim is to save the deteriorating conditions of schools in the state.



He spoke during the commissioning of new ultra-modern library complex in Kwara state University (KWASU), Malete, Moro local government area of the state. The library complex was funded by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TEDFUND). Represented by his Deputy Kayode Alabi, the governor said: “Everything is messed up in Kwara state, the decay will take years to fix but we are convinced that we will succeed if everybody supports us. We are starting on ground zero.

“We are faced with criminal breakdown of basic infrastructure across every sector in the state, especially in the education and health sectors. Just last week, we had to pay N250 million to offset two months’ salaries the state government owed workers across the state colleges of education. We also paid an additional N50 million to secure re-accreditation for two of the colleges.

“We still have a backlog of arrears to pay these teachers. We have promised to steadily offset these backlogs with an appeal to the workers to return to work after many months of industrial action to protest the neglect of the schools by people elected to serve the public. The decay in the infrastructure across our primary and secondary schools is better imagined. The more any patriot sees such a thing the sadder he becomes because it points at a bleak future unless something urgent is done.

“It was so bad that funds meant for upgrades of facilities at the primary schools were diverted with serious consequences for the state. “Our government is determined to raise a generation of children who are able to cope with the education needs of the 21st century.”

Two students of the University of Abuja, who were charged with culpable homicide by the police, have been admitted to bail in the sum of N5 million each.

The students, Christian Francis, 17, and David Ogwu, 16, were arraigned before an FCT High Court in Nyanya by the police on July 3. They were accused in a three-count charge of conspiracy, failure to give information and culpable homicide.

The students, who are 100 level students of University of Abuja, were alleged to have gone to the Dome Hotel Abuja for a pool party on April 27 where the police alleged they conspired to commit the offence.

The prosecution counsel, Mr Dabo Yakubu, told the court on July 3 that the defendants and one Emmanuel Balogun now (deceased) entered the pool together to swim on April 27.


He alleged that when the defendants noticed that the deceased had drown, they swam out of the pool, dressed up and went to school.


He further alleged that the defendants failed to inform any public servant that the deceased did not know how to swim. Police said the offence contravened sections 97, 224 and 138 (b).



The defendants however pleaded not guilty to the allegations against them. Following an application by their counsel, the trial judge, Justice Mohammed Idris, yesterday, granted them bail.



Justice Idris also ordered the defendants to produce one surety each, who must not be below the level of an assistant director in the federal civil service.



He added that the surety must have landed property in Abuja and must swear to an affidavit of means while the defendants must deposit their travelling documents with the court.

A suicidal woman was on Monday evening, rescued after she jumped into a river somewhere in Kogi State.



According to reports, the unidentified lady alighted from a commercial trycycle on a bridge, left her luggage behind and jumped into the river.

Fortunately, someone quickly jumped in and rescued her. It's not clear if the rescuer was the Keke driver or a diver.

A young Nigerian lady has come out to defend the senior pastor and general overseer of the Commonwealth of Zion Assembly (COZA), Pastor Biodun Fatoyinbo, amidst child molestation allegations. In a recent interview, Busola, the wife of Nigerian singer, Timi Dakolo, had alleged that she was molested by the pastor as a child. The mother three noted that the incident had happened when she was a choir in his church in Ilorin, Kwara state. The young lady identified as Somto Orji said that if Busola Dakolo was molested by a normal person she would not have revealed it to the public.

A Nigerian man and his Indian girlfriend were arrested on Sunday, by the Kandivali police in Mumbai for possession of cocaine worth Rs 1.40 lakh.



Acting on a tip-off that Andy Matin Edoji, 45, will be making a sale in Mahavira Nagar in Kandivali, PSI Suryakant Pawar and his staff laid a trap near Mahavir Nagar Kandivali west on Sunday evening and tried to stop a suspicious Volkswagen car.



While trying to do so the accused sped off with the car avoiding the cops but collided further away. The police officials then surrounded the vehicle and then nabbed Edoji.

He was in the car along with girlfriend Aaliya Sheikh, 29, when the cops caught him.
While undergoing a search of the vehicle. the police officials recovered 20 gram of cocaine worth around Rs 1.5 lakh.



“Edoji has been living in Kharghar for the last one year while Aaliya lives in Jogeshwari. The two became acquainted via social media. She has had several cases of drug-peddling against her in Delhi and other north Indian cities,” informed a police official.



During interrogation, it was revealed that Edoji came to India on a business visa and was residing in a rented flat in Khargar area since January 2019.



Aaliya, a resident of Jogeshwari, would visit high-profile pubs and clubs to seek out customers. Edoji would then supply the drugs.

An official said that the houses of both the accused have been searched but no drugs were found. Police have also seized the man’s passport and the Volkswagen car he was driving.

“We are investigating other aspects of the case including where he acquired the drugs from,” said the official.

"Both the accused were booked under various sections of the Narcotics Act and were produced before the court today. They were remanded in police custody," The police official added.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Benin Zonal Office today, June 28, 2019 secured the conviction of Isaac Christiana Nkemdirim before Justice M.G. Umar of the Federal High Court sitting in Benin City, Edo State.

Nkemdirim was convicted on a one count charge of obtaining by false pretence contrary to Section 15(2)(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2002 as amended and punishable under 15(3) of the same Act. .


The charge reads: “That you, Isaac Christiana Nkemdirim (alias Ama Christiana, Isaac Christian and one Favour Chinonso (alias Steve Obinna (at large), on or about 23rd of August, 2018 within the jurisdiction of this honourable court did conceal or disguises the origin of the sum of N150,000 (One Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira) which you transferred to our Account 0775064177 domiciled in Access Bank PLC , which you knew or reasonably ought to have known that the said amount forms part of the proceeds of unlawful Act to wit: obtaining money by false pretenses and thereby committed an offence contrary to section 15 (2) (a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) Act, 2012 as amended and punishable under section 15 (3) of the same Act.


Upon her arraignment, Nkemdirim pleaded guilty to the charge.
Based on her plea, the prosecution counsel, Fredrick O. Dibang prayed the court to convict and sentence the defendant accordingly.
However, the defence counsel prayed the court to temper justice with mercy as his client was a first time offender and a youth who has promise never to go back to the crime.
Justice M.G. Umar thereafter convicted and sentenced the defendant to eight (Cool months imprisonment without an option of fine.

Two officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps FRSC, Akpotobo Paulinus and Uchenna Izuako, have been accused of killing their colleague, Emeka Ojei, who wanted to expose them.



Activist, Harrison Emefiena Gwamnishu who is leading the campaign for justice for the deceased, wrote on his Facebook page this morning



"Two Federal Road Safety Corps officers serving in Onitsha, Anambra State have allegedly strangled their colleague, Emeka Ojei to death for whistleblowing.

Two senior officers Akpotobo Paulinus Unit Commander and Uchenna Izuako, Route Commander FRSC Onitsha, carried out the act.

The two officers have been detained in SCID Awka since 8th June,2019 and from investigation, the police refused to charge them to court.

Meeting with the family yesterday, We assured them of carrying out thorough investigation and make sure the perpetrators are brought to book..

Till date, the FRSC are yet to visit the family.

The deceased is from Okpanam, Oshimili North LGA, Delta State.

We wish to alert all Okpanam sons to get prepared as we shutdown the nation for the death of our own.

Bags filled with cocaine were discovered on a military plane travelling with the president of Brazil to the G20 summit on Tuesday, allegedly planted there by a Brazilian air force member.

The plane was making a stopover in Seville, Spain, before heading to this week’s G20 summit in Tokyo, Japan, when the Brazilian air force officer was detained.

The officer was “suspected of transporting narcotic substances,” the Brazilian Defence Military said in a statement to CNN, which prompted officials to search the plane.

Spanish police said cocaine was found in suitcases. The drugs amount to approximately 39 kilograms.

Military personnel were travelling with the president as protection. In a tweet, President Jair Bolsonaro confirmed he had been briefed on the arrest and called the incident “unacceptable.” He called for an “immediate investigation and severe punishment.”
