Saudi Arabia’s official team plane caught fire in mid air, as they travelled to their next 2018 World Cup match.

Flames were seen from the engine, as the Russian Airlines Airbus was enroute to Rostov.

“The Saudi Football Federation wishes to reassure everyone about the safety of all members of the mission of the national team after a minor technical malfunction in an engine.

“The plane landed a few minutes ago at Rostov on Don Airport, and UNOMIG personnel are now safely heading to their residence,” An official statement read.

Saudi Arabia were thrashed 5-0 in the opening match of the tournament.

A Muslim cleric, alfa Aliu Akorede has dragged his wife, Rashidat Akorede to Oja Oba/Mapo Court C Customary Court, Mapo, Ibadan, Oyo State.

Aliu claimed that his wife was stubborn, rude and defiant and that he was forced to move out of his house because she planned to kill him and take over his property.

Aliu added that she turned all their children against him and that on many occasions, she and the children gang up to beat him.

The plaintiff, as such, pleaded with the court to dissolve their 23-year-old marriage.

The defendant failed to appear in court after being served a court summon twice.

“My lord, I moved out of my house four months ago because my wife was bent on terminating my life and taking over my property.

“She rubbed shoulder with me in the home and later usurped my position as the head of the family. She took decisions concerning the family all alone and executed them without my knowledge or consent. For example, she withdrew our eldest child from school and enrolled her in a vocation.

“She was also in the habit of leaving home any time she liked. There were times she was away from home for more than two months without informing me of her whereabouts and would return without giving any explanation as to where she went. I reported her to her parents on many occasions but she refused to change despite their counsel.

“She stopped cooking for me and totally neglected me. Any time I complained, she would shout and rain curses on me.

“She went further to instigate our children against me. They have no regard for me and constantly flouted my orders.

“Any time I had a heated argument with my wife, she would pounce on me and order our children to tie me down with a rope and they would all beat me.

“I packed some of my belongings and left my house so that they would not snuff life out of me, “he stated.

Giving his judgment, the court president, Chief Ademola Odunade stated that it was obvious that their marriage had broken down irrevocably. He added that it was expedient for the court to dissolve their union since it involved violence.

Ruling, he dissolved their union and granted the plaintiff custody of their children.

The plaintiff was ordered to give the defendant the amount of N3, 000 through the court to pack her belongings from his house.

Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption (PACAC), has said his committee cannot investigate the failed $16 billion National Integrated Power Project carried out during former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration.

Buhari had sometime in May hinted on probing Obasanjo over the failed $16 billion power project. Obasanjo, while reacting, said that he was ready for probe over the power project.

However, Sagay speaking to Independent said his committee had not looked into the project because it did not have the mandate to do so. He said investigation and prosecution were the responsibilities of anti-corruption agencies.

He said: “When the time comes, we will meet with Buhari on the power project. It is an issue that we were not seriously thinking about in my committee.

“As I said, the anti-corruption agencies are the ones who have all the facts and figures. “So, we will meet them and give them the initiatives, but if this thing becomes a political issue, it may be necessary to dig in, get the facts and take the appropriate action.

“If anybody wants to make capital of politics by running down the government which is the most upright government we have had since Murtala Mohammed government then, this government may have to show that it is a government of principle and a government that has a will to suppress corruption, and those who challenge it will face the music.

“It is not that we don’t want to look into the issue of the $16 billion power project because of the former president but the truth is that my committee doesn’t have that power.

“We don’t do investigation or prosecution. Our work is mainly that of a think-tank. In other words, we do activities to give the anti-corruption agencies greater capacity to make them more effective.

“We make proposals to the government to help the fight against corruption. For example, we have been engaged in training of judges and prosecutors both at the federal and state levels.

“We have been engaged in preparing manuals for prosecutors to use, preparing sentencing guidelines for judges to use.

“We also draft the bill on proceeds of crime which will give the agencies power to seize assets that they suspect have been acquired by crime or illegitimately, putting anyone claiming it under the obligation of establishing how he got it.

“We have a draft of that; it is with the National Assembly. We have a special crimes court which would have done more effectively what the Chief Justice has done by saying that certain courts should be set aside for crimes, particularly corruption.

“Of course, we also write regular advice to the president over issues that we think are pertinent towards the fight against corruption,” he said.

Human rights lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), on Saturday, restated his opposition to the sale of nomination forms to aspirants for elective offices by political parties.

Falana, in an interview, threatened to take legal action against political parties that were still selling nomination forms to aspirants despite previous court judgments prohibiting such payment.

Falana, had last week, in Lagos, during the one-day national electoral summit, organized by the Transition Monitoring Group with support from the United Kingdom’s Department for International Development, railed against the commercialization of nomination forms by political parties.

He regretted that despite President Muhammadu Buhari expressing disappointment that he took a loan of N27m to buy the APC nomination form during the 2015 elections, he had not been able to change the guideline.

Falana took on the political parties on Saturday while also indicating his intention to sue them if they continued in the act.

He said, “The conditions for contesting elections from local government, to the House of Assembly, governorship, House of Representatives, Senate and presidential levels, are all in the constitution.

“There are decisions of the court to the effect that the Independent National Electoral Commission and state electoral commissions cannot collect fees from candidates who are contesting elections.

“So, if I am going to contest the election, you can’t ask me to pay N27m as nomination fee because that is unknown to the constitution.

“Therefore, the parties cannot decide their own rules. They cannot impose prohibitive rules that will restrict the participation in the contest of an election to moneybags.

“Of course, we may have to sue the political parties if they continue this illegality. We cannot go on like this.”

He added that aggrieved aspirants should be encouraged to sue their parties.

“Aggrieved party members should be encouraged to challenge the prohibitive nomination fees imposed on aspirants by political parties.

“I believe any citizen, who meets the requirements outlined in the Constitution, is qualified to contest any election. Political parties cannot add to the constitutional requirements.”

Suspected Boko Haram jihadists killed at least 31 people in a twin suicide bomb attack on a town in northeast Nigeria, a local official and militia leader told AFP on Sunday.

Two blasts ripped through the town of Damboa in Borno state on Saturday evening targeting people returning from celebrating the Eid al-Fitr holiday, in an attack bearing all the hallmarks of Boko Haram.

Following the suicide bombings, the jihadists fired rocket-propelled grenades into the crowds that had gathered at the scene of the attacks, driving the number of casualties higher.

“There were two suicide attacks and rocket-propelled grenade explosions in Damboa last night which killed 31 people and left several others injured,” said militia leader Babakura Kolo.

Two suicide bombers detonated their explosives in Shuwari and nearby Abachari neighbourhoods in the town around 10:45 pm (2145GMT), killing six residents, said Kolo, speaking from the state capital Maiduguri, which is 88 kilometres from the town.

“No one needs to be told this is the work of Boko Haram,” Kolo said.

A local government official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the death toll.

“The latest death toll is now 31 but it may increase because many among the injured may not survive,” said the official.

“Most of the casualties were from the rocket projectiles fired from outside the town minutes after two suicide bomber attacked,” he said.

The jihadist group has deployed suicide bombers, many of them young girls, in mosques, markets and camps housing people displaced by the nine-year insurgency which has devastated Nigeria’s northeast.

On May 1 at least 86 people were killed in twin suicide blasts targeting a mosque and a nearby market in the town of Mubi in neighbouring Adamawa state.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari came into power in 2015 vowing to stamp out Boko Haram but the jihadists continue to stage frequent attacks, targeting both civilians and security forces.

The militants stormed the Government Girls Technical College in Dapchi on February 19, seizing over 100 schoolgirls in a carbon copy of the abduction in Chibok in 2014 that caused global outrage.

Former Super Eagles midfield maestro, Jay Jay Okocha has blamed the team’s 0-2 loss to Croatia in their opening World Cup game on lack of creativity.

Okocha, who was a guest on Super Sports TV, said the team lost because the players played in wrong positions which didn’t bring out the best in them.

“We didn’t have a creative midfielder today. Mikel Obi has been a great servant but I think his best position is sitting in front of the back four.

“We saw him play as a defensive midfielder in Chelsea and he did so well,” he said.

The veteran player also added that Alex Iwobi was the most creative midfielder in the national team at the moment but playing him as a winger “was taking his strength from him”.

“Iwobi can play from the wings in Arsenal because there is a Mesut Ozil who brings creativity.

“I think the only reason why we lost this game is because our players played in the wrong positions and we didn’t get the best out of them,” he added.

Nigeria will take on Iceland on June 22 and play their last Group D game against Argentina on June 26.

The Ekiti State Governor on Wednesday announced the sack of two board chairmen with immediate effect.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Mrs Modupe Alade.

The sacked board chairmen are Chairmen of the State Teaching Service Commission, Chief Gabriel Falayi and that of the Governing Council of the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti, Prof. Babajide Alo.

Alade said the sack takes immediate effect.

The statement announced that “Chief Femi Ogundipe has been appointed as the Chairman of TESCOM; Mrs Adeola Yesufu as Chairman, Governing Council of the College of Education, Ikere Ekiti and Mrs. Folasade Akinrinmola as Full-Time member of the state’s Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).
“The decision was as a result of the need to reorganise government parastatals for effective service delivery.”

The federal government on Tuesday begged Nigerians traveling to Russia not to escape during or after the 2018 World Cup tournament.

Solomon Dalung, Minister of Youths and Sports made the appeal in a chat with newsmen in Abuja.

Speaking on the fears of trafficking in persons during the mundial, Dalung said that nobody would be allowed to travel to the World Cup without clearance from the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP).

“What we have done is to ensure that every group traveling, the list must be submitted to NAPTIP and you cannot travel without clearance.

“In the past few days NAPTIP has made huge arrest of people who are running flaw of the rules of human trafficking.

“And this had confirm our fears that there are so many people who are not traveling to support the Super Eagles rather they have intention of embarrassing the country in Russia”, he said.

Dalung further appealed to fans not to embarrass the country, adding that the sister agency of NAPTIP in Russia is in red alert for those kind of people.

The 1998 World Cup winner insists his decision to walk away from the Santiago Bernabeu was not made with an international coaching post in mind.

Zinedine Zidane has insisted he did not leave his Real Madrid post just so he could take over as France coach.

Zidane made the shock decision to resign as Madrid head coach just days after leading the Liga giants to a third straight Champions League title.

The 45-year-old was quickly linked to taking over his nation, who under Didier Deschamps are considered among the World Cup favourites.

But Zidane said his decision to leave Madrid had nothing to do with potentially leading his country.

“The most important thing is to support the team of France,” he told TF1.

“I didn’t stop to want to take the team of France. I stopped to make a parenthesis.

“I’m behind the French team. We want it to bring back a second title.”

Zidane claims to have made no decision on his immediate future as yet, with a welcome break being enjoyed after a stressful but successful period at the Santiago Bernabeu helm.
