This isn't mysterious or spiritual, river algae can grow rapidly in hours and cover the entire river and can die rapidly too. (it's like water leaf). It's usually a threat to water transport and can destroy propellers in some boats.

We did geography and social studies, basically there are 3 stages of a river, this is a typical feature of a lower stage. Yes it is a threat to the river ecosystem that is why government should remove it asap. There would be sharp increase in oxygen and increased methane gas from dead flora.

Lower stage (when a river loses velocity and the river or a portion of it is dying) of a river can commence naturally or by man/construction.
