Jake stood at the balcony of the house. He held a packet of juice in his left hand while the other hand rested no the rails. He wore his favourite white knicker and a black T-shirt. He stood there like some one who had nothing to worry about. He was indeed one of the few lucky ones God had created, he was intelligent, born with good looks into a rich family. What else could he possibly ask for? He stood there sipping his drink without worries like the son of a wealthy man who he actually was. The breezy weather had transformed into a mild down pour. There was a hoot at the gate and the slender gate keeper ran out from his post and opened the gate. A black Toyota Corolla slowly rolled into the compound and drove straight to the garage. Maxwell and his fiancée alighted from the car and walked into the building. They had patches made from the rain on their clothes. Maxwell stamped his feet to remove the sand which the rain had glued to his shoe while Jessica wiped her hair with hand palm. Maxwell tickled her ribs and she giggled through the stairs. "Hey! young man, whats up?" Maxwell said tapping Jake slightly on the back. "Am good Max" Jake replied as he turned and shook his brother's opened palm firmly. "Welcome Jessie." he said bowing shortly to Jessica. Jake always called his brother and his friends by name despite the enormous age difference and somehow Maxwell and his friends even the lady Jessica never mind. "how are you doing Jay" the lady replied with a smile. "Am fine and hope you got something for me?" he asked. "sure thing." she said stretching out a white paper bag towards him. "Thanks " he replied taking the bag which contained fabrics. He knew it was from his brother and had been presented by his lady. "You 're welcome dear" She said with a warm smile and walked in to the house to allow the brothers continue their "never ending gossip." "So you are going to marry her soon?" Jake said with an expressionless face. "yeah, I am" the big brother replied. "Don't you like her?" Maxwell asked. "Damn! I love her Max, more than i love you" Jake replied as they both burst into laughter. "That's fair" Maxwell replied stil laughing. "let me get inside my friend" he said leaving his brother and his gift at the balcony. Jake knew someday he will have to get married. Who or what the person will look like remains unknown until then. Although he was still young, Anabel was his only female friend. Hopefully their friendship would grow into young love and then marriage. |

The night had been a terrible one for Patrick. The cell was stuffy and pungent smell of urine and cheap cigarette clouded the air and it tingled his nostrils. The cold and roughly cemented floor where he laid or rather sat through the night with three other inmates had not been friendly at the least. Patrick was brought out to the counter that morning for another session of interrogation . The constable on duty when he was brought in the previous day had removed his shirt and trousers, so he was left with his briefs. His phone had been switched off and collected from him as well. As he stepped out from the cell, closely followed by an officer who almost pushed him down. The fresh air out side the cell hit his skin and he took a long breath. He never knew air could be that nice. The few hours spent in the cell had been worse than a century in "Hades." "yeah! You have to report to the station." the officer continued over the phone. He kept his gaze on Patrick whose mind was certainly far off. "B division, yes." he concluded as he hung up. "Damn!" Patrick said softly. He shouldn't have given them his brothers number. He never wanted to involve his siblings but now somehow they ought to know his way about. He bent his head and stared sternly at the floor as if he was looking for a pin. "Sergeant Okoro!" a paunchy fellow called walking into the station. "Sir!" a neatly dressed officer roared with a swift salute. Other officers stood at attention as their superior officer walked into his office with the sergeant walking behind him. Few minutes later, Patrick was asked to wear his trousers and his shirt. He sat on the bench behind the counter waiting for his brother to come. He hadn't disclosed any criminating information to them so they won't have anything to do with Benson besides the usual bailing procedures so there was nothing to fidget about. Inside the office the Inspector spoke in a low tune with the sergeant. He sat on his black leather chair with the Sergeant sitting across the deck paying utmost attention to every instruction he was being given. As they spoke the on the phone on the paper infested wooden desk rang. The Inspector raised the receiver. "Hello?" he said tryingt to decipher who the caller was. " we 've made contact with his..." He paused and gestured at the Sergeant to confirm who they had made contact with. "brother." the Sergeant provided in a whisper. "yeah, brother and i believe he will be coming to the station today" he paused and listened to the caller. "well, we wont be charging him for drugs to avoid implicating your boy. He will be going for...erm..." he stopped and looked at the roof as if some answers were there. "Robbery, that 'll really send him off for a long enough time Sir." He waited for the person on the other end to get the message or approve his opinion. "Nothing to worry sir" he said dropping the receiver as the line went dead. "Establish no room for a bail when the brother comes." The Inspector instructed the sergeant as he rose to leave the office. The sergeant turned the door knob and was about to leave the room when the Inspector spoke again. "Follow my orders to the deligently and you shall be duly rewarded." The sergeant smiled sheepishly like a seven years old girl with a new Barbie doll. |

Benson opened his eyes from the floor where he lay. The brown envelope was on his chest and part of his head rested on the bed. He still wore the jean trouser of the previous day but the black belt was slackened. He removed the envelope from his bare body and placed it on the bed as he sat up right, his mind crawled slowly into consciousness. He turned his head and looked at the bed. Susan lay on the bed sleeping like a baby. The thought of the position of things immediately filled his mind. Once since the death of his parents he felt lonely and scared. A cold chill ran down his spine and goose bumps appeared on his skin, with a hiss, he stood up grudgingly and headed for the bathroom. The sound of water running down the septic chamber woke Susan from her sleep. She turned as Benson shut the bathroom door and walked into the room. "whats up" Benson said to the half awakened Susan. "Am fine" she replied, yawning and feeling her temple with the back of her palm. Her head was slightly hot although the ache of the previous night had disappeared. He walk towards the bed, picked up the envelope and sat beside his sister. "Everything 'll be fine." he assured her, trying to be the man. She was now his only family and that thought hurt him. "Ok." she said with a thin smile as she walked to the living room. He brought out the contents of the envelope and looked at the three International Passports and the ATM card. How Patrick had kept the passports safe stil amazed him. Patrick had been more than an elder brother to both him and Susan and now his way about wasn't known. Benson disconnected his phone from the charger where it had been charging on the wall socket. He dialed his brother number and he received the same story. He dropped the phone on the bed and put the passports back into the envelope and placed the ATM card inside his wallet. He will go to the bank and check the account status. If Patrick had left him a note and those things then Patrick knew something about the whole saga he thought. Susan was already in the portable living room when Benson entered. Her poignancy had climaxed as she stood in front of a large photo of five people; her self, her two brothers and their parents. "Suszy, get ready lets step out, we 'll definitely pick up a clue out there." Benson said. Susan kept staring at the picture before turning slowly to face her brother. "where exactly do you intend we go to" she asked with sincere disappointment on her face. "Ehm... Lets go to the bank and check out the account first" Benson suggested. "Do you know the PIN?" Susan asked. "Nope, but we can't go to the Police just yet." Benson replied, eliminating any room for such options. "Bro P doesn't write his codes down so how do u intend gaining access to the account? That's if anything even lies there?" Susan counted. "well Patrick knew something about his way about if not he wouldn't have dropped the note." Benson replied. "we don't seem to have another choice since you 've ruled out the Police." Susan concluded as she walked back into the bathroom. Few minutes later they both left the house and stepped into the gloomy street. "Its definitely going to rain." Susan said. "yeah, its a good thing you know, so better hasten up." Benson replied as he looked at his watch. "what's the time?" susan asked. "quarter to sharp." Benson replied with a mischievous smile. "Meaning?" susan asked with a pseudo frown, understanding that Benson was indirectly mocking her not having a watch. She threatened to hit him which he dodged. They laughed gleefully for the first time since the previous night. They met a slim queue at the ATM booth. As it got to their turn, they both moved in, Benson inserted the card and the automated response followed, requesting for a four digit password. He punched the first four numbers that came to his head. Those were actually Patrick 's year of birth. The machine rejected it. He tried "1234" which seemed to be more a general code and the same old story from the system. Susan looked back and noticed the impatience grooming on the faces of the people waiting for them and gently tapped her brother. He couldn't leave here without getting something he thought within himself paying no attention to his concerned sister. He placed his hand on the board but this time no number came to his head. "1776" that was the box code. He smiled as his fingers made their way through the keys. The screen displayed a new page and Susan watched with amazement. "Patrick has a thing for the United States, or why should he he using their year of independence as his code for every thing?" Benson asked. As the screen displayed the balance, the both were dumbfounded. Benson hurriedly removed the card before a prying eye would see it, Susan squeezed his left hand as if to make sure she was awake. As they hurried of the bank premises, Benson's phone rang. He pressed the green button of the phone and raised it to his ear. "Hello?" he said. The callers voice was not familiar. "WHAT!" he shouted in a shaky voice............ |

Michael sat on a sofa in his large parlour. The room was chilly as usual and his large cuban cigarette lay lit on the an expensive clay ashtray. On the stool beside him was a bottle of moet. His legs were stretched out with his left ankle on top the right, he adjusted on the leather couch and his gaze attempted to penetrate the high roof. This was the same man whose life had little or no meaning many years ago. Nobody believe he will ever be a bicycle owner let alone the amazing "Fortres of Fortune." He was one of the few people who benefited from illegal deals and whether or not were his deals illegal, he was made. Superly made. As he waited patiently for his guests, his mind slowly dragged on to his days as a pauper. He had slept under the sky so many nights that a twelve digit calculator cannot sum up. He never nursed a dream of having a wife or children due to poverty. He had remained that way despite the wealth he had inveigled. The thought of being an aged bachelor and a recluse brought a tiny frown to his face. He shook it off with a sip from his glass. The entrance door squeaked and three people entered the living room. Ade entered first and he was closely followed the Mr Chamberline and another fellow with a paunch. As they walked in Michael rolled his head to get a view of the intruders. "Iron bone." he called out. "Yes my Boss" Ade answered firmly. Michael motioned to him and he walked towards the large bar to get more drinking glasses. "Lets sit gentlemen." Michael continued, trying to wave his sober reflexions aside. They sat down as Ade returned with three glasses. He poured out drink into all the glasses from the bottle before sitting next to his "Boss." "How did it go?" Michael asked looking at Chamberlin who the question was directed to. "very fine sir. I've done some deals with that guy before." Chamberline replied. "Have you and your men gotten any vital information from him, Inspector?" "ehm... Nothing for now but sure we 'll. But i guess he is one of those freelancers spoiling things around here." The Inspector replied. "very well then, if your assumptions are right then I want him outta my way immediately. But remember I don't want him dead." Michael instructed stressing his last instruction emphatically. "clearly understood." the Inspector said, raising his glass to his charcoal black lips which was a living testimony of his undisputed loyalty to cigarette. "Ehm My Boss, can't we just pull him in?" Ade asked. "Ain't your men doing well?" Michael asked. "Sam and Blacky are doing fine sir." Ade answered adjusting on his seat. "Then I don't think you need a new man." Michael counted with a stern gaze. "what ever the Boss says." Ade replied with a smile as he gulped down his drink. Michael stood up and put out the light of his cigar, the long robe he wore which was made from mild silk cotton brushed the surface of the well polished hard floor. "One more thing, find a way to put that guy of the street for a long time and Ade," he called in a croaky voice. "when ever you need a new handyman Inspector Gab knows what to do." Michael concluded. With the unlite cigarette on his left hand and his right hand pulling up the robe he walked toward the stairs for his room. He knew he was melancholy and he couldn't fathom the reason. The other three men took their time to finish their drink before leaving the house. They had played God and his Arch Angels and decided the fate of a man. |
