Tanzania President John Magufuli, on Sunday announced that his government would not shut down churches and mosques over Coronavirus.

President Magufuli went ahead and told a congregation in Tanzania where he had attended a church service that the Covid-19 virus is Satanic and cannot survive while in the “body of Christ”.

“Corona cannot survive in the body of Christ, it will burn. That is exactly why I did not panic while taking the Holy communion,” he said while the congregation cheered. Coronavirus cases in Tanzania so far stand at 12.

Religion / Group Of Church Women Spotted Lying On The Road In Benue, Praying Against Corona by Westdeliveryng: 2:21am On Mar 24, 2020
A Nigerian Facebook user, Onah Blessed Emmanuel spotted a group of Methodist Church women lying on the road in Ukpute, Benue State, while praying against Coronavirus.

Emmanuel who shared photos of the women praying, said he wasted no time in joining them in the prayer.

PRAYERS AGAINST CORONAVIRUS

On my way to the village, last weekend, at the boundary between the Igede and the Tiv people – that was in Konshisha – I saw these the women of Methodist Church Nigeria, Ukpute, whose photos appear underneath, with their white uniform all laid on the red sand praying completely smeared. Upon sighting them, I stopped quickly and wasted no second to join them in the prayer. They called on God to put an end to coronavirus. They asked God to preserve Igede sons and daughters and bless them wherever they are.

They prayed for Governor Samuel Ortom and the people of Benue State. They begged God to stop the killings in Benue and in other parts of the country. They expressed their happiness that I was the first among those who passed before me to stop, and they prayed for me. Mrs Jessy Obwo, the wife of the circuit minister, specifically requested the women to pray for me and appreciated me for identifying with them.

The world is on a trajectory to a devastating end, if nothing is done. A famous American elite, yesterday, charged the people of the United States to spend more time on their knees than they do on the internet.

The social media too have been awashed with pictures of doctors surrendering to God in prayers while treating Coronavirus patients.

Are these not clear statements that the solution to the global health crisis is in the place of prayer?

Let’s speak to God. Suffer your knees and save your life. Emmanuel wrote on Facebook.

Patience Zakari who was stabbed to death in Bauchi on Friday morning by her boyfriend.

Bauchi State Police Command has apprehended a man, Solomon Peters, who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend, Patience Zakari, to death in Bauchi following a disagreement over telephone call. .

Peters took to his heels after committing the heinous crime in the early hours of Friday but was arrested on Sunday. The deceased was a National Diploma (ND) graduate from the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi.

A telephone call from another male friend of the deceased had resulted in a heated argument, resulting in violent scuffle that led to jealous Peters stabbing Patience with a knife.

A source narrated how the deceased briefed him of the incident before she finally died. He said the lovers had a heated argument when the deceased received a phone call from a male friend in the middle of the night.

“She narrated to me before she died that everything happened at about 1:30 a.m. on Friday morning. She said she received a phone call from just an ordinary male friend and her Solomon got jealous and started harassing her verbally.

As she was trying to explain to him, he pounced on her and started hitting her. She took a bottle, hit him on the head in self defence because the beating was too much for her and the man picked up a knife and stabbed her in the back in retaliation.

Crime / How Two Staff Stole N1BN From First Marian Trust Limited by Westdeliveryng: 9:04am On Jan 27, 2020
Ikeja High Court, Lagos at the weekend heard how two staff members of First Marian Trust Limited allegedly conspired to steal N1 billion from the company.

The staff members, identified as Adeyemi Oluwaseun and Suleiman Obhakume, had worked for the company, as at the time of committing the alleged offence, as a Relationship Manager and a Treasurer respectively.

The duo were arraigned alongside two others: One Yusuf Adekunle and Haruna Issah on a seven-count charge of conspiracy and stealing by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The EFCC alleged that the four defendants sometime in May, June and September, 2016 conspired and stole the sum of N1 billion property of First Marina Trust Limited.

However, testifying before the court as a prosecution witness, Mr. Anthony Onyeoghane, who is an IT expert, narrated how the defendants committed the alleged offence.

The witness, while being led in evidence by the EFCC lawyer, A.B.C. Ozioko, said that the 1st and 2nd defendants, who were his colleagues at the company, allegedly conspired with others outside the organization to defraud customers of the company.

Onyeoghane testified that during the course of interrogating the first defendant, Oluwaseun, confessed to the Committee that he was the one that gave out the account numbers of customers where monies got stolen.

“We found out that over one billion naira was missing from customers’ accounts. And when we traced the monies, it was found in the 1st defendant’s account,” the witness said.

When asked about how the defendants were able to defraud the company, he said, “the reason they were able to defraud the company was because the 1st defendant is the Relationship Manager who deals directly with the customers.

“The 2nd defendant was the Treasurer, who ought to checkmate the activities of the 1st defendant, but was also involved in the crime.

“Once the 2nd defendant okays any instruction alleging to have emanated from a particular customer, every other person will automatically assume that such instructions were given by that customer.”

On issues of whether the 2nd defendant had powers to approve transactions, he said, “my Lord, the 2nd defendant has the power to approve transactions. If he does not confirm that the email came from a customer’s regular email address, bearing an approved signature, date and an “email confirm,” then such instructions by a customer won’t be treated.

“They allegedly conspired among themselves to forged emails of one customer which on the company’s record was lanreishola@yahoo.com while the fraudulent email used was lanreishola1@yahoo.com

“The report from the committee, which was submitted to the company management, clearly stated that there were fraudulent activities committed by both the 1st and 2nd defendants against the company.”

Meanwhile the EFCC alleged that the defendants on 16th, 17th and 27th of May 2016 stole the sums of N183.5m, N237.3m and N500million property of First Marina Trust Limited.

The commission also alleged that other sums of N180million, N186million and N14.7million were stolen by the defendants between 7th, 9th and 22nd June, 2016.

The anti-graft agency said that the offences contravened Sections 285(1)&(Cool of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

Justice Josephine Oyefeso thereafter adjourned the matter till today for continuation of trial and hearing of pending applications.

Business / Isabel Dos Santos: Africa's Richest Woman Charged With Fraud by Westdeliveryng: 12:23pm On Jan 23, 2020

Isabel dos Santos, Africa’s richest woman has been charged with fraud which took place during her stewardship of state-owned oil firm Sonangol.
Angola’s billionaire former first daughter Isabel dos Santo’s has been charged in the southern African country with money laundering and mismanagement during her stewardship of state-owned oil firm Sonangol, the Angolan prosecutor general announced on Wednesday.

Hundreds of thousands of files about dos Santo’s were obtained by the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) and released by several news organisations on Sunday, dubbed the “Luanda Leaks”. They allege the daughter of ex-president José Eduardo dos Santos plundered state coffers to build her fortune, estimated at $2.1 billion (€1.82 billion).

“Isabel dos Santo’s is accused of mismanagement and embezzlement of funds during her tenure at Sonangol and is thus charged in the first instance with the crimes of money laundering, influence peddling, harmful management…forgery of documents, among other economic crimes,” prosecutor general Helder Pitta Gros told a news conference late Wednesday.

Portuguese news agency Lusa quoted Pitta Gros as saying that dos Santos had not directly shown any interest in collaborating with Angolan authorities. “At the moment, the concern is to notify and get them to voluntarily come to justice,” he added.

Dos Santos, who was chairwoman of Sonangol from June 2016 to November 2017 and amassed her fortune during her father’s decades-long presidency, could not immediately be reached for comment but has denied wrongdoing.

Investigations were opened after her successor Carlos Saturnino raised the alarm about “irregular money transfers” and other dodgy procedures.

Dubbed Africa’s richest woman, dos Santos is accused of using her father’s backing to plunder state funds from the oil-rich but poor African country, and of building her business empire by moving the money abroad with the help of Western firms, including transfers between Angola and Dubai.

Pitta Gros said dos Santos was among five suspects, all of whom were currently residing abroad.

Stakes held in major Portuguese companies

In Portugal, dos Santos holds significant stakes in several major firms including NOS and oil firm Galp Energia. Soon after the Angolan prosecutor’s announcement, dos Santos announced her decision to sell her stake in Portuguese bank Eurobic, the small lender said on Wednesday.

Dos Santos is Eurobic’s main shareholder but the bank said she had decided to withdraw from its shareholding structure and sell her stake. In a statement sent to Reuters, Eurobic said the selling process of the 42.5% stake had already started and dos Santos’s decision was “final”.

A spokeswoman for Portugal’s public prosecutor’s office confirmed to Reuters that Angola’s Pitta Gros and Portugal’s attorney general, Lucilia Gago, will meet in Lisbon on Thursday. She did not say what they will discuss.

Frozen assets in Angola

She stopped living in Angola after her father, who ruled the country with an iron fist for nearly 40 years, stepped down in 2017 for his anointed successor João Lourenço.

Angolan authorities froze Isabel dos Santos’s assets in the African country in late December following allegations by prosecutors that she and her husband Sindika Dokolo had steered payments of more than $1 billion from state companies Sonangol and Sodiam to firms in which they held stakes. Dos Santos and Dokolo denied wrong doing.
